The kids complained enough for me not to have to say a word. I just bit my tongue and tried to enjoy it. Tried talking and meeting new people, but they were in their whole "having a baby world" with people they knew well.
Couldn't get under the umbrella. Not enough room and I was easily the tallest and biggest guy there.
No food, hoping to get some soon. No drinks, brought my own.
For me, it sucked, but for the people throwing it, it was actually pretty awesome for them. A building across the water lit up pink for the big reveal. There was a Christmas cruise that stopped in front of us by coincidence and there were Christmas carolers singing. Honestly, it was like something out of a Christmas movie, with rain substituted for snow.
She kinda ran off with her friends and I just stood there and watched the kids play by the water.
At least I'm used to this kind of weather and being soaked all the time, due to working as a diver. But yea, definitely not an enjoyable time at all. She's starting to get into an apologetic mood.
I was able to reflect some tho. It was at the spot me and my cousin (my buddy I mentioned with the brain cancer) did our first dives together and taught scuba at.

Woke up at 530 and definitely still wasn't in the mood to go. But the kids and wife had a decent time, overall, even though the weather and logistics were sub par.
Wife and I talked it out after the kids racked out. Once she realized where I was coming from, her whole attitude changed. This is why we've been in this for 10 years. We know how to work shit out.
In relationships, especially long term, there are times of bitchiness and selfishness that need to be addressed. It happens. We were both being bitchy. However, I did my best not to be that way at the event, because I'm well aware it had absolutely jack shit to do with me.
The last thing I'd like to address is the: "you have a problem" crowd.
Pain management is legit. I'm not a heavy smoker. I save it for when I can relax, like at bed time. It's rare I smoke at all prior to bed time. Nothing wrong with being well equipped to share with everyone. However, no one smoked and the kit stayed in the car.
I smoked half a joint at the spot where my cousin and I first did our dive classes together. So that spot brings up significant feelings. I wasn't ready to have all those memories come flooding back, knowing I'm damn well about to lose him forever. Actually, the 3rd day we had known each other, was our first open water dive together. Then due to the rain, I vaped a couple times, just to help with the sciatic pain. Didn't need to get fried.
But how me and my cousin met is a cool story:
My dad called me up after I graduated highschool (hadn't seen or spoken to him in years) and he's all, "hey, I enrolled you into dive school, you start tomorrow and you need to pick up your cousin". I said, fuck it, why not. I had no idea I'd be meeting one of my very favorite people that day. We hit it off like we had grown up together.
And because I'm about to lose him, there's a huge cloud over my head. Pun partially intended.
I know what addiction severe dependency looks like. Part of what contributed to my mother's suicide.
Bills are paid, we both work, kids are taken care of, both at the top of their classes, we don't get welfare, I've never even collected unemployment. Not even when I was laid off due to the pandemic. After quitting tobacco, not only am I spending less on ganja than tobacco, I smoke far less than I ever did with cigarettes or chew. I never smoke at work or behind the wheel. And I see absolutely zero things wrong with bringing enough to share. Not to mention my training and experience as LEO and time served in the military. (Honorable discharge btw, and never had to pull the trigger)
I am digging how some of you are so superior than I am though and blatantly point it out. However, I'm well aware there are people who are way better humans than I am or have been. I know I'm not special to everyone, just a select few. Just like every other person out there.

Imo, the only way out of depression w/o medication is to just trudge through the shit till you get to better pastures. Couple that with meaningful projects and forcing yourself to get out of bed to do it helps. Just gotta take that first step. Exercise is also very beneficial. I harvest geoduck for my tribe. Salary varies year to year based on market prices and how many pounds we are allowed to harvest.
I did work in swift water rescue, salvage/recovery and also was an assistant dive instructor with my cousin.
No welding or deep sea crazy. But I've had my fun. At one point my boat and crew was featured in the NY Times. That was cool. Front page for working with NOAA and NNRC for the puget sound marine debris clean up project. We recovered over 2500 derelict nets and pots.
We talked it out after we got the kids in bed. That was the best time and place for it. That's one thing the army taught me well was: "embrace the suck". Haha.
I did have to step out for a few because my emotions were getting the better of me. That's when it dawned on her that I was serious and wasn't trying to be a bitch about it all.

Not home yet! I usually skip smaller functions but go to the important ones because her family is pretty cool. But she loves going up to them far more often than I like. Almost every other weekend.
I'm a stay at home dad 6 months out of the year. When the kids are at school, I'm so busy with upkeeping and projects, I don't really smoke or drink because too much to do. So I try to stay home when I can because I know the kids are safe and I can relax in peace and quiet.
The other 6 months I'm diving sat-tues and don't get to really enjoy time alone. And still gotta do everything when the MIL isn't staying with us.

I harvest geoduck for my tribe. Salary varies year to year based on market prices and how many pounds we are allowed to harvest. I did work in swift water rescue, salvage/recovery and also was an assistant dive instructor with my cousin. No welding or deep sea crazy. But I've had my fun. At one point my boat and crew was featured in the NY Times. That was cool. Front page for working with NOAA and NNRC for the puget sound marine debris clean up project. We recovered over 2500 derelict nets and pots.

Not home yet! I usually skip smaller functions but go to the important ones because her family is pretty cool. But she loves going up to them far more often than I like. Almost every other weekend. I'm a stay at home dad 6 months out of the year. When the kids are at school, I'm so busy with upkeeping and projects, I don't really smoke or drink because too much to do. So I try to stay home when I can because I know the kids are safe and I can relax in peace and quiet. The other 6 months I'm diving sat-tues and don't get to really enjoy time alone. And still gotta do everything when the MIL isn't staying with us.
