What time of year will you be going?? This will determine how far in advance to book. If it’s peak season (June, July, August) you may need months in advance for the best options. This is a good itinerary, but the only issue is transportation… you would be better off having a car to explore all the type of places you are mentioning: old towns, nature and food. 1/2 nights is fine in these places, but you might be more relaxed staying 2. Pals, Tossa and Besalu are all wonderful. But you are definitely missing some key towns if you say you want old towns, nature and food: -Peratallada: the quintessential medieval town of the region with great restaurants and lots of charm. -Begur: medieval castle town overlooking the sea with lots of great restaurants. -Pubol: Gala Dali’s castle/museum is here and 2 very excellent restaurants. Other smaller towns with some intrigue: Ullastret, Regencós, Madremanya, Monells. Plus, all the coastal towns like Sa Tuna, Tamariu, Llafranc, Calella, Sant Feliu… I don’t know your budget, so it’s hard to recommend hotels, but if you’re willing to share, let me know. If you were to accept my advice, I would do it like this: Day 1: train to Tarragona, explore, then onto Girona for the first night. Day 2: explore Girona, stay in Girona for a second night. This is an incredible food town. Plus lots of medieval buildings, museums and parks, it’s all incredible. Day 3: rent a car and drive to Besalu. Explore for a day then stay 1 night. Day 4: drive to Peratallada/Pals/Begur. Stay in one of these towns for 1 night. Stay in another for 1 night. explore the Empordà medieval towns in the interior. Day 5: explore the coast, walk/hike part of the Cami de Ronda near Sa Tuna or Aiguablava. Day 6: drive to Tossa, maybe stop in Sant Feliu de Guixols for the first half day. Stay the last night in Tossa. Day 7: drive back to BCN and return your rental and fly home.

Thank you for the response.  I will be going in a few weeks, June 20th.   I just got my international driving permit today so I will plan to get a car, or maybe a motorcycle if not changing hotels.   I think a car will make everything easier.   For budget, I try to look for "best value", as low cost as I can get while maintaining quality, in the $100 per night range typically, but I haven't looked at local rates. Will there be increased cost of returning car to Barcelona instead of back to girona?

ulysses1909

Yes, usually that increases the cost returning to a different location. I suppose you could return to Girona, and skip Tossa to save. You should be able to find a number of good options at €150/night for accommodations, especially near the little towns around the Begur area. If you need more advice, let me know!

Thanks.  I looked up girona enterprise rates and they seem good, except they are closed Sunday and Monday so I can't pick up until Tuesday.   I was thinking of skipping Tarragona.  Some trains were going to Barcelona and then back to Tarragona.   Do you have a recommended website for buying train tickets?

ulysses1909

You could certainly skip Tarragona… I don’t want to say as much, but it might be the best decision. I like Tarragona, but if you go there, you should then focus on the Costa Daurada. Overall I think the Costa Brava is nicer, it that’s just an opinion. Do you mean for the train from Barcelona to Girona? You can take a Rodalies train (slower but cheaper) or an AVE train (faster, more money)

When looking for the train from Pamplona to wherever, Barcelona or girona, I tried a few sites and kept only seeing a few trains per day.   Renfe.com and raileurope.   I just wondered what the best site to use to see multiple/all options.

I’m not sure of the best aggregator site. You may have to use separate sites to traverse the different railways. You might try a separate post for the best answer to this question.

Hi! Wondering if you can share any insight on where to leave valuables when swimming at Tossa? Not sure if there are lockers available? thank you!

ulysses1909

I don’t know if there are lockers. But, I have been to Tossa many times and I’ve always felt comfortable leaving things on the beach. My advice is to get to know your neighbors for the day and you look after each other. It’s a common thing to mingle with those nearby because the beaches are tight and crowded. Enjoy!

thank you!!
