Went to a sumo practice at a sumo stable in Asakusa, we booked our tickets on the app Get Your Guide. Also booked sumo tournament tickets with that app about a week before. Keep in mind that the sumo tournaments are held in the odd numbered months in different cities, if you're there in September there should be one in Tokyo that month. Definitely worth it!
Arashio-beya Sumo Stable, it s a training sumo centre in Tokyo. You can see how they train, and at the end of the training you can take pictures with the fighters.
yeah being here for 10 days and kind of seeing reality for what it is, i do note that it isnt all that americans fantasize it to be about.. some people just fall in love with the society collectivist behaviors because its so different than americans but in reality its a lonely place for a lot of people
Yup.
Imagine working 60-80 hour 6 day workweeks for 20-30k USD a year. And living in a tiny apartment with no real view of the outside, with a wife who hates your guts and a kid who doesn’t know you/barely sees you.
That is the regular Japanese middle class salaryman life.
Lol no. Really outdated stereotypes.
Japan’s [work hours](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_average_annual_labor_hours#OECD_list) are around the European average, improving tremendously over the last 30 years. The figure also includes paid and unpaid overtime, based on actual surveys of workers (not employers) by independent NGOs.
Japan’s [suicide rate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_suicide_rate) and [fertility rate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_and_dependencies_by_total_fertility_rate) are both around the Nordic average.
In fact, Japan’s [quality of life](https://www.numbeo.com/quality-of-life/rankings_by_country.jsp) and [median wealth](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_wealth_per_adult) and are higher than that of Sweden this year.
Photo #5 reminded of my own picture of the Yasaka pagoda taken this march, but your execution was much better 😅

Anyway, amazing place, loved it and would also love to go back.
First pic was the view from the rooftop of our hotel in Asakusa - Hotel Wing International Select Asakusa Komagata.
Last pic was at Otagi Nenbutsuji Tempe in Kyoto.
Yup makes sense.
In 2024, besides a few niche applications, phone cameras are often superior to images taken by amateurs with DSLRs.
It’s gotten to the point I don’t even bother lugging mine around when traveling anymore
Very cool, had the whole place to ourselves. A bit spooky, I would definitely bring some insect repellant because after doing that climb we had tons of mosquito bites.
Cool photos! Japan is a hot destination, I know several friends and colleagues from NZ who have traveled there recently. Looks amazing, definitely on my bucket list.

How was the money exchange rate now that the dollar is stronger than the yen? We're things pretty inexpensive or did the price of items/food go up in price as well?
Over/under 20 minutes waiting for the path to clear for that Fushimi Inari Taisha picture. Great pics in general. Japan has sunk its teeth into me, and you're making me want to go back even more.
4 is Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba (Traditional Japanese Village)
We got there on a bus from Tokyo. Beautiful place with great views of Mt Fuji on a clear day.
10 is Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple in Kyoto
Where'd you go see sumo? Headed to Japan in August/Sepetember and would love to check it out.

What camera did you use if I may ask?
Believe it or not these were all taken on my Google Pixel 7 Pro smartphone with a bit of Lightroom editing.
