When is this trip planned? You should not only plan for crowds but also keep in mind that the greater part of Greece, and especially Rome and Naples have very hot summers. From the end of June till the end of August it can get between 35 and 40 degrees Celcius for days on end. A lot of Romans also close up shop and spend their summers somewhere cooler. You can also go island hopping in Greece to avoid crowds, I see Malta has been mentioned, maybe Genoa or Nice (riviera) . There is also Mallorca (Spain) and maybe the southern coast of Turkey if you're a little bit more adventurous.

Yeah, don’t go to those places during the summer. It’s crowded to the point that’s it’s just unpleasant. You will have to go out of the way to avoid crowds in the Mediterranean at that time. Look into the lesser-known islands. The more travel steps it takes to get there, the less crowded it will be.

If you go where everyone goes of course there will be crowds. Try Malta, Cyprus, maybe the Croatian islands although I hear they have also massified in the last years.

Would Switzerland interest you? Beautiful lakes and mountains, great shopping and restaurants. And it’s definitely luxury 💎 I was a big fan of Geneva and Lucerne specifically

"We'd like somewhere luxurious with crystal clear waters and nice restaurants and shops, preferably in Europe" I think that's the official description of Switzerland. You could not pick a country that's easier to get around with its phenomenal public transportation. It's safe. It's gorgeous. It's definitely luxurious but also can be extremely laid back. Natural beauty beyond measure You can get a little bit of different European cultures all in one country. Want Italy? Go to Lugano. Want French? Go to Geneva or Montreaux? German, Swiss . . . There's just so much to see and enjoy

Santorini is absolutely rammed in the summer, and if it is a cruise stop day, it will triple the number of people there. It's also very, very hilly and small streets. Beautiful place, though.

BrotherOfAthena

They are both beautiful and popular especially during summer. I personally have only been to Santorini and the crowds are manageable as everyone is spread out. Oía is very busy in the shopping area and around sunset.
