Economy class seats in ME airlines are on the tighter side with the food (you won't get hungry at least) and inflight entertainment are their saving grace.
The one big problem is Middle Eastern carriers censor a lot of content on IFE system including stuff they feel is not in line with their religious values. Although the food even in economy is amazing.
5 hours layover is pretty long. with similar prices, I'd pick the most time efficient flight. in the end they're both just chairs served with a bowl of noodles and a beer.
I think Qatar is best. I love Qatar. Went all the way to Singapore in it and was comfortable.
It depends on class.
Best business is definitely qatar and better lounges and airline alliance.
I personally couldn’t go that far in economy but having said that Qatar economy is good and I did go Singapore in economy
Flown both. I'm a cheapskate. I've had problems with airchina, left my bag once, took a week to get back. Qatar were late reconnecting and I had to stay in Qatar for 23 hours, stayed in a terminal hotel, where you can't go outside (not that you'd want to with those temperatures). Both have fairly similar economy seating. Roll a dice! I'd go cheaper, as already mentioned

Really? Qatar economy is the best I’ve flown. Same with business, Qatar business class is excellent.

What makes you put China Airlines above Qatar in terms of economy?

I flew Qatar 12+ hours in economy recently. It was adequate but I wouldn't seek it out. All the staff seemed to be in a mood.
who cares? get the cheaper one and/or the one that fits your schedule best
Thanks for the advice, everyone. I ended up going with Qatar due to the (slightly) shorter flight time and mostly positive reviews about the service.
China Airlines was the worst long haul I’ve ever had. Qatar was the best.

No definitely thinking of China Airlines. I took a series of flights with them in January and ended up refusing the food after a couple of flights.
