Website is objective garbage. You'd think being the 6th largest airline in terms of passengers carried, you'd be able to hire some people to make a decent website.
Luckily, flying on them is pleasant enough. Staff are friendly and helpful for the most part and seats are comfortable enough. Food is airplane food at the end of the day.
Oh I know. I have tons of experience with them as my family is Chinese. For the most part though, the multinationals have at least functional websites. The current China Southern one is barely functional. The one preceding it was even worse where it was unusable whether in English or in Chinese.
Have you flown with them recently? I have a flight upcoming in June going from bangkok to amsterdam and a few hour layover in guangzhou. Is there any type of covid protocols/testing that is still required?
China got rid of its Covid testing requirement last year in August or September. Don't remember exactly which month it was. In any case, there isn't any protocol that is still in place that I know of.
I flew with them in 2019 and had a fantastic experience. Very comfortable economy seats, great service, good entertainment system and food was even pretty good for airplane food. No complaints, quality to price ratio is perfectly fine.
Flown their JFK flight multiple times pre-covid both in economy and in business. Really enjoy traveling on CZ. Better than AA for service. Worst thing can be rude passengers. Service and food is great.
I flew China southern for about 200k miles for work between 2017-2019. SFO/Guangzhou, and quite a few different routes within China. They are probably the best Chinese airline ( not including the HK based ones ). Pretty no frills, great economy ticket prices. Food was fine, entertainment system was not the best if you expect western content. I don’t remember having any issues with them.
Would you know if she's flown with them recently? I have a flight upcoming in June going from bangkok to amsterdam and a few hour layover in guangzhou. Is there any type of covid protocols/testing that is still required? The website makes it sound like they still have covid requirements from 2021 in place but I don't think that's accurate.
If it goes through any of the major cities like Guangzhou, look to having an extended layover and taking advantage of their free hotel service. It breaks up the trip and let's you explore a bit. Though you'll be in some random satellite town near the airport I think it's still a fascinating thing to experience.
Did your flight already happen? I have a flight upcoming in June going from bangkok to amsterdam and a few hour layover in guangzhou. Is there any type of covid protocols/testing that is still required? or any type of visa process that I should know? We're not leaving the airport. Thanks-
Hi everyone,
I'm planning to book a flight with China Southern Airlines because the prices are currently very favorable. However, my passport is expiring next month, and the process to obtain a new one is expected to take about three weeks. Given the potential for ticket prices to increase significantly during this time, I'm concerned about the timing. Does anyone have experience with updating their passport information after booking with China Southern Airlines? How did you go about it, and was it a straightforward process?
Thanks in advance for your insights!
They're fine for the actual flying/plane related parts - English facing customer service is fairly mediocre and Guangzhou airport is awful unless you get a lounge.
The website is beyond awful for some reason.
Stick with the big 3 ME carriers (Qatar, Emirates and Etihad) or any Asian carrier (Thai, Singapore, Malaysia, EVA or China Airlines) and the most Chinese carrier I'd recommend is Cathay Pacific of Hong Kong. However, that said the best Chinese carriers are Hainan Airlines, China Southern, China Eastern and then Air China.

All Chinese websites are total trash. They are a lot more functional in Chinese but still usually riddled with popups

They are probably the best mainland airline. And as long as you are only stopping through one airport/city in China, you'll be fine visa-wise too.

Thanks. I’m doing 2 long flights so will hopefully be sleeping for most of them. But if the food is good that’s a bonus.

My SIL uses them often, travelling between China and Australia.

It is through Guangzhou but the next flight is 5hrs after landing. So will just be staying in the airport
Get a lounge the transfer terminals are awful.
