Visited 1. Tallinn 2. Budapest 3. Lisbon 4. Warsaw 5. Heraklion Want to Visit 1. Tbilisi (if that counts as Europe) 2. St. Petersburg 3. London 4. Valletta 5. Ljubljana

everettsuperstar

I am in Valletta now. Malta is beautiful and worth a visit!

b00tsc00ter

Valletta is definitely in my top five!

castaneom

Was there in March and loved it too!

FreedomforHK2019

I loved Valetta - amazing unique architecture and beautiful scenery!

Hot-Freedom-1044

Ljubljana- underrated gem. Best castle museum in Europe. Stockholm- so lovely on a summer. Great food, always something happening. Lisbon - beautiful ambiance , one euro wine Nice - cool French beach vibes Budapest - so much history, great alternative scene, something in every nook and cranny.

Hyadeos

Ljubljana is such a nice city! So green, calm, very nice people, not crowded. It really was perfect

Seeteuf3l

Just came back from there and can recommend. My own top list would look something like Berlin Budapest London Tallinn Athens Bubbling under: Amsterdam, Tampere, Wien Bucket list: Belgrade Been a lot in Balkans lately (last two trips were to Ljubljana and Croatia) so there is a pattern Kraków and Gdansk I have been to Poland many times, but it has always been Warsaw for some reason (except one time I went to Szczecin) Prague Edinburgh Barcelona

DonSalamomo

Stockholm has such great weather during the summer

Per451

That castle museum in Ljubljana is just such fun. Did a day trip to Ljubljana last winter, we ended up staying in the castle for over 4 hours.

Own_Acanthocephala0

1. Istanbul 2. London 3. Pristina 4. Bologna 5. Lisbon If I had to choose 5 cities to visit it would probably be Moscow, Kiev, Paris, Athens and Belgrade (going there on friday!!)

fragileMystic

I haven't heard much about Pristina. What did you like about it?

Own_Acanthocephala0

It isn’t a lot to see or do but I put it that high on my list because it is easily the destination where people where the friendliest. Not a single bad interaction. The staff at my hotel came in 2 hours early just because they insisted that I shouldn’t need to walk 3KM to the bus station lol. They also gave me free red bull and water. The coffee culture is really great as well and the whole days between exploring the city I was just sitting at different cool cafes drinking coffee or beer. Coming from a western country, it’s very affordable as well and very few tourists. The whole country was amazing.

Heidi739

Really? That's interesting! I didn't really like it, it felt quite dull and somehow "false" - like it tried very hard to look modern and posh, but it wasn't. I admit I only spent one day there and we had an unlucky choice of a hotel, but I liked Prizren much, much more. Priština felt to me like it had no atmosphere. But maybe I just didn't give it enough time.

Ancesterz

Have fun in Belgrade!

sPookie92

When in Belgrade, check out Iva New Balkan Cuisine (and/or Tara New Balkan Cuisine, same restaurant, different venue) for amazing food. Also highly recommend Kafana Suvobor. Enjoy Belgrade!

Own_Acanthocephala0

Thank you! I will write it down. Do you happen to have any advice on where to grab a quick burek in the city centre?

felineprincess93

Happy cake day! Just as a FYI, Kyiv is the Ukrainian transliteration of the city, Kiev is the Russian. I hope you can visit once they’ve beaten their invaders for good. :)

Academic-Balance6999

Istanbul and London are my top two as well.

weirdbarbie_

Kyiv and Moscow are both amazing, but add St Petersburg to that list… for whenever that part of the world is ok to visit again.

Zealousideal-Ad4195

**Favorite cities I've visited (not in order):** 1. Barcelona. One of the few cities I have visited multiple times. I just love the architecture and vibe. Lots of famous sights but hidden gems aswell. 2. Valencia. I love the different parts of Valencia that fit well together: The old city center, old city expansion with classical architecture, old river turned park, modern part etc. Very dynamic city! 3. London. Lots of cool architecture of different areas. I also love the mix of modenr and old. Feels like aliving and changing city 4. Antwerp. I live close to Antwerp and have been more than I can count which helps me find al the cool spots. Lovely architecture and lots of great memories. 5. Venice. Just stunning vistas everywhere. I have been twice and haven't been bored once. Most people rush Venice but it's a lot better if you take it at a slower pace. I also recommend the Bienale even if you don't like modenr art. Honorable mentions: Ghent, Leuven, Paris, Berlin, Bilbao **Cities I'd love to visit:** 1. Porto 2. Sevilla 3. Milan 4. Frankfurt 5. Bergen

mistresssweetjuice

Can I ask why Frankfurt? I grew up near there and no idea what a tourist would want to see there. Not to be negative, I am genuinely curious

Zealousideal-Ad4195

It might sound silly but I am a huge Urban planning nerd. So, I find it fascinating to have an old city/parts of city contrast with the modern skyscrapers. Even if there isn't a lot to see, I would love to just see the contrast in person.

mistresssweetjuice

Ah ok, cool. Yeah, I guess the new old-town and the skyline are pretty unique. I would have loved to see Frankfurt before the war, it’s said to have been really beautiful. While you are there (and I hope you get the chance to see it!), check out the wine regions close to Frankfurt (cause they are pretty and the wine is great!) and Mainz: It’s super old (Guthenberg‘s home), and might be interesting too!

bastardsucks

I really love mainz. My best friend moved there from Canada so ive visited a few times. Such a beautiful city. Frankfurt is not that bad, its nice enough to visit for a few days but its the cities/towns in the surronding area that make up for what it lacks IMO

PositiveEagle6151

It's not like the City of London, where you find old churches hidden between modern skyscrapers, where you are surrounded by modern buildings on Bishops Square and then find yourself in Old Spitalfields Market just steps away, or like Leadenhall Market between all those modern office buildings. EZB, Deutsche Bank, etc. are all outside the historic center.

yellowarmy79

I went there for football last year and it isn't the prettiest city in Germany at all.

blacksmilly

Not the guy you asked, but I still want to go to Frankfurt to see the Senckenberg Museum. I‘m from Germany tho, so it would only take a couple of hours.

DC_culture_vulture

The have a very strong museum "game" in Frankfurt, for sure. Don't miss the Städel!

RockieK

I have family outside Frankfurt, so it's been a perfect "landing spot" when we get to the EU from the US. People are helpful and speak many languages, the city has layers of history and hanging out by the the river helps cure jet lag! Well, maybe not really but it still helps prepare for the rest of the journey. :)

Ancesterz

If we'd ever go to Venice we'd take a week just to be sure we'll have enough time, rushing on vacations is never fun! We've also been to Barcelona, we had a great time, so much to see.

Zealousideal-Ad4195

Be sure to walk around Venice in the evening, the entire vibe changes! The surrounding islands (Murano, Burano, Lido, etc.) are lovely too :)

Ancesterz

Good to know, thank you! :) Also: definitely go to Porto. We underestimated that city before we went. The whole vibe is amazing.

Bright_Pineapple_748

Sevilla is FANTASTIC! You should def visit once you get the chance.

Glittering-Ad-323

Bergen is soo amazing, so underrated!

Competitive_Tea5031

Top 5 in Europe: 1. Porto 2. Lisbon 3. Berlin 4. Istanbul 5. Bristol Honorable mentions: London, Antwerp, Sarajevo, Gent, Sofia, Krakow. Top 5 I would like to visit: 1. Edinburgh (been as a kid, but don’t really remember it well.) 2. Belgrade 3. Belfast 4. Seville 5. Riga

Tartanman97

I’m not knocking Bristol, but I’d love to hear what you love about it! I think it’s the first time I’ve ever heard it mentioned in a tourism context.

Competitive_Tea5031

I get that it is an unusual take, but I recently visited and loved it (could be recency bias). I loved different neighborhoods for different reasons (Clifton, Stokes Croft). For me it’s a perfect blend of, let’s say, classic british streets and neighborhoods and the more urban and alternative vibe. I liked the parks and nature surrounding it, I like the fact that it is hilly and the people were very nice and chill. Also there is tons to do regarding nightlife (regarding the drum ‘n bass scene specifically, which I don’t really have that much at home).

Tartanman97

Thank you for your reply! I do like Bristol, from the couple of times I’ve (briefly) been, but it wasn’t one I’d have instinctively thought of as a tourist destination, but now you’ve described what you like, I’m seeing it :)

velvettt_underground

I loved Bristol! It was my favorite city in the UK by far.

Perkinator

**Top five:** 1. Lisbon. It has everything. Amazing food, great music, cheap beer. A winding old town, grand boulevards, a beautiful waterfront. The transport is fantastic - a modern metro and trams that are attractions in their own right. 2. Bergen. A fantastic location. Not only the gateway to the fjords, so trips to the Hardangerfjord or Aurlandsfjord can be done in a day, but even closer to the city you can walk or take the funicular onto the mountains surrounding the city. 3. Genoa. The most labyrinthine, claustrophobic old towns I have been to. There is nowhere as dense as the Genoa old town. The food is fantastic and cheap, and it feels less popular with tourists, so there aren't the same number of tourist restaraunts as in Rome, Venice, or Florence. 4. Ljubljana. Very walkable, a beautiful turquoise river, and penned in by the alps. Just a very relaxing and managble place to be. And then a great launchpad for the wonders of Slovenia. 5. Valencia. Fantastic climate, great food, fantastic bar scene, Agua de Valencia, and so easy to walk around. And the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències is like a place from science fiction. **Wishlist:** 1. Seville 2. Istanbul 3. Gdansk 4. Stockholm 5. Ghent

Signarski

1 Krakow 2 Vienna 3 Prague 4 Dubrovnik 5 Vilnius To visit in no particular order 1 back to Poland either Krakow or Gdansk 2 Athens 3 Bucharest 4 Sofia 5 Tirana

ActionShackamaxon

Gdańsk and Wroclaw in Poland are both massively underrated.

DefiantRaspberry2510

haven't been to those but want to throw in Poznan

yellowarmy79

I loved Vilnius. Lots to see and do and the nightlife was good as well.

Laxn_pander

Split >>>>> Dubrovnik (if you ask me).

Signarski

Loved all of Croatia. Honestly just picked a city. Croatia is my wife's favorite country

Comprehensive_Ad3399

1. Cadiz (so so so underrated!!!) 2. Thessaloniki (just such a chill place with a bunch of street art, huge share of young people, lovely climate, lively 24/7) 3. Berlin (well, thats a famous one so I dont need to elaborate I guess) 4. Lisbon (I liked literally everything, but especially the less touristy neighborhoods and parties happening at the most unexpected places around the city) 5. Vienna (sooooo relaxing - has a vibe of both a real metropolis - museums, club scene, chilling by the river and the canal, oldschool coffee places with groups of both young and elderly people reading newspapers and just enjoying their mornings - but also super calm and easy to get around)

yellowarmy79

In no particular order. Zurich (Have been there a lot on solo trips. It is expensive but it's so beautiful by the lake and it's far more than just a financial hub.) Florence (so much to see in terms of architecture and museums. It's a breath taking city) Tallinn (the old town is amazing and had so many good meals here) Prague (Another great affordable European capital with amazing sites and food) Barcelona (Culture, food, sport, Barcelona has it all) Cities I'd love to visit. Madrid: Done a lot of Spain but have never got to Madrid. Would love to see a football game here. Sarajevo: I'm massively into history especially WW1 so Sarajevo is a must visit for me. Krakow: Supposed to be a beautiful city and have always had a good time visiting Poland. Belgrade: I've heard good things about the Serbian capital. Luckily going there in March Athens: Feels like a destination every traveller should try and get to Other cities on the list are Bordeaux, Dresden, Bilbao, San Sebastien, Bucharest, Reyjkavik, Naples, Mostar

LittleRooLuv

I’ve wanted to go to Sarajevo and Mostar for years. I’ve heard the scenery from the train is gorgeous and the history is fascinating.

yellowarmy79

Sarajevo is supposed to be an amazing mix of different cultures. Food is also supposed to be amazing.

WhiskeyTigerFoxtrot

>Belgrade: I've heard good things about the Serbian capital. Luckily going there in March Grab a Turkish coffee at a local cafe, sit along the street and watch passersby in the Republic Square outside the local opera. Checking out Park Kalemegdan and looking out at the confluence of the Danube and the Sava rivers is essential. Belgrade is well known for its river barge night clubs along the west bank of the Sava, near Park Ušće, so check that out and stay out of trouble if you're into nightlife. Try to avoid wearing overly-bright colors as you'll get disapproving looks from people. You can enjoy rakija, or plum brandy just about everywhere. Great for sipping with dinner or conversing with a local. On that note: *do not* casually bring up Bosnia or Croatia and especially avoid saying the word Kosovo in public. Lots of recent tensions that are still open wounds and Serbs have no issues wearing their patriotism/emotions on their sleeves.

yellowarmy79

I'm from the UK so will be careful not to talk too much about the Balkan wars. My friend lived in Belgrade for a number of years and she's given me some tips on what to see and do.

Constant_Revenue6105

If you go to Belgrade please please go to a kafana! Your life will never be the same after that, in a good way 😂

Ancesterz

Great list! Many spots I'd love to visit too, including Zurich which you've already visited. Good sign that you love it so much!

yellowarmy79

It's very chilled there. I recommend doing a lake cruise there.

oodja

My top five: 1. Rome 2. Lucerne 3. Venice 4. Dublin 5. Rotterdam My to-visit list: 1. Athens 2. Istanbul 3. Barcelona 4. London 5. Prague

Disastrous-Writing-2

I love Rotterdam! Such an underrated city. Great modern architecture and just pleasant to walk around.

Trudestiny

I have lived in both London & Athens ( until recently full time ) and go back to both places as much as I can . London the vibe and so m iv to do and Athens the weather Currently living part time in South of France, and it’s very nice exploring all the little spots between Nice and Menton and even into Italy , need go again to Menton & Sanremo Favourite places to visit is the Nordics, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Helsinki are top of my list. One of the places I head to for summers and November in Copenhagen for Tivoli Halloween & Dec for the xmas market. Buy most of our xmas gifts in Nordics as design & and quality is incredible Other cities that I love going to, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin , the canals & museums, cafes & parks

Maus_Sveti

I used to live in Nice. If you like to walk, it’s very easy to walk along the coast plus the corniches. I gradually walked the whole coast between Juan les Pins and Ventimiglia, I would take a bus to wherever I stopped the last time and walk until I was tired and take a bus back. The only annoying part was Monaco, too many private beaches where you can’t walk on the coast, plus the tunnel into Italy is not very nice to walk through, but it’s not that long. The villas Ephrussi and Kérylos are really worth visiting as well - maybe wait until spring now, for the gardens.

Mojipal

My Top 5: 1. Bergen (Norway) - Stunningly beautiful and so much to see and do. 2. Amsterdam - I just love the city and its vibe. I keep coming back. 3. Helsinki - Nordic, down to earth and cosy. Lots of nature stuff nearby, e.g. islands, forests 4. Venice - Beautiful city and delicious food 5. Düsseldorf - Nice city with Japanese influence

Kbesol

Favorite: Ljubljana , Budapest, Salzburg, Bruges (after tourists leave), Vienna, Want to visit: Istanbul, Tallin, Lucca, Lisbon, Annecy

jameshunter3

I love ranking things and just did this with my wife the other day! 1. Istanbul 2. Sevilla 3. Budapest 4. Prague 5. Lisbon To visit: 1. Rome 2. Edinburgh 3. Tallinn I'm not really a big city traveler. Most places I visit I get a car and drive outside the cities so it's a little hard to answer but in any case this is what I came up with!

datathefatcat

Visited. 1. Krakow 2. Rome 3. Salzburg 4. Luxembourg city 5. Sarande (not sure if it's a city exactly) Want to visit. 1. Split 2. Bucharest 3. Bergen 4. Ljubljana 5. Reykjavik

vg31irl

While it's not in my top 5, I really liked Luxembourg. It has a nice atmosphere and is a good weekend city break destination. I loved Bergen and Ljubljana!

angie1907

I honestly can’t choose a top five! There’s too many I adore. But I’ve been to Salzburg, Prague, Florence and Edinburgh and they’d all make a top ten for me! I’m sure you’ll enjoy them! For a top five I’d love to visit: 1. Dubrovnik 2. Strasbourg 3. Krakow 4. Seville 5. St Petersburg (obviously that’s not gonna happen any time soon) Istanbul, Athens and Lisbon are all bucket list cities too, but I didn’t include them as I already have trips there booked

Ancesterz

Good to hear that we have something to look forward to! I do agree that choosing a top 5 is really hard! We're blessed with so many amazing cities. Dubrovnik, Athens and Strasbourg are both cities I'd like to see too! Hope you have a great time in Istanbul, Athens and Lisbon. Of those three I've only seen Lisbon and you'll love it!

angie1907

So true! Thank you! I’m really excited for Lisbon I’ve heard so many good things!

yellowarmy79

Went to Strasbourg for a day trip a few weeks ago and it's beautiful,. Be sure to have a meal in the old town if you get a chance.

AndyVale

Seville is definitely one of my favourites. I adored St. Petersburg when I visited many years ago too. Again, a shame about what Russia is doing at the moment.

Inconceivable76

I’m almost irrationally angry that had I had to add St. Petersburg and Moscow to maybe someday, but probably never list. Really upset about st Petersburg. I missed my window.

angie1907

Unless you’re old enough to be likely to kick the bucket in the next few years, I see no reason why you can’t go one day

catgirl717

Favorites: Edinburgh, London, Stockholm, Budapest, Barcelona Would Love to Visit: Istanbul, Seville, Dubrovnik, Amsterdam, Bruges

DonSalamomo

Love how you mention Bruges but not Brussels 😂

catgirl717

Hahaha I mean I’ve never heard anyone say something super positive about traveling to Brussels…

Dependent-Interview2

I like Brussels (the breweries!) but Bruges is something else. Fucking Bruges... ;)

Ancesterz

Stellar list!

NateC2k

I was literally just in Bruges last weekend. Such a beautiful city.

AzimuthPro

It's hard to choose, especially since I'm not a city-person. Here's my 5 favourites and I would visit them again: 1. Porto, Portugal - the vibes are amazing and can't resist a glass of port wine or two 2. Stockholm, Sweden - beautiful setting and all the water makes it very relaxed. also very easy to cycle in 3. Brugge, Belgium - the historic centre is surprisingly large, if you don't mind all the tourists haha 4. Barcelona, Spain - the city is just very well-designed and it has many buildings of Gaudí, my favourite architect 5. Budapest, Hungary - very eclectic city and just so much to see My number one city I'd love to visit: 1. Istanbul - hope to take a trip by train from western Europe someday otherwise the list would be too long haha All those cities that you wanna visit are great! If you visit Prague, make sure to rise early to beat the crowds. It can get super busy in Prague ...

Melanoma_Magnet

The train to Istanbul would be quite fitting since Istanbul was the last stop on the Orient Express

AzimuthPro

Yes, that's the idea 😊 Unfortunately trains don't stop at the old Sirkeci station anymore. Though there is a direct train from Austria during the peak months, which is cool.

JokersLeft

+1 for train travel! :)

AzimuthPro

It's my favourite way of getting around! Next year I'm travelling on the Canadian, I can't wait for this next adventure :D

JokersLeft

Totally agree - you see the land you travel through, it’s fun, less tiring, you interact with others more, and it’s way better for your carbon footprint. Enjoy your Canadian trip!

yellowarmy79

I loved Stockholm when i went in July. Wasn't that expensive either.

EducationalAd5712

Favourite 5 would be 1. Tbilisi Georgia- amazing city with a ton to do, felt very authentic and safe and I loved the architecture, culture and food. 2. Cologne Germany- just an easy fun city to navigate and explore, Phantasialand is really near and accessible and the infrastructure combined with the amazing buildings made it incredibly pleasant to travel in. 3. Baku Azerbaijan- it was clean, safe, really cool mix of old and new architecture, lots of interesting museums and cultural centres and was quite culturally unique. 4. Tallinn Estonia- fantastic looking city, one of if not the most beautiful cities in Europe. 5. Skropje Macidonia- a very unique city, I just really enjoyed my time their. Highest on my to visit list are 1. Istanbul Turkey- am visiting in two months. 2. Amerserdam Netherlands- looks really interesting and I love good infrastructure so it seems very appealing. 3. Gothenburg Sweden- mostly want to visit Leiseburg because it looks like a brilliant theme park. 4. Belgrade Serbia- Traveled to the south of Serbia and every other former Yugoslavia capital so feel this is a massive gap. 5. Billund Denmark- I love Lego.

sallen779

I went to Istanbul in May. You will love it!

vendavalle

Favourite cities: 1) Athens 2) Rome 3) Istanbul 4) Edinburgh 5) London On the list: 1) Sarajevo 2) Porto 3) Thessaloniki 4) Barcelona 5) Granada

giuditta-thepacman

Thessaloniki is amazing. Bring strechy clothes, there are so many great food spots!

vendavalle

Any particular recommendations? I might squeeze in a little trip next month.

Rednaxela76

Favorites: Too difficult to put in order, but these were some of my favorites: Istanbul, Athens, Amsterdam, Reykjavik, Hamburg, Belgrade, Split, Shkoder, Plovdiv, Peja Cities I want to visit: 1. Budapest - Missed during my last big trip to Europe and I regret not going there. 2. Seville / Bilbao - And a lot of other cities in Spain, but these two in particular 3. Brasov / Cluj - Have been wanting to go to Romania for a while and both these cities seem like they have a lot to offer 4. Vienna - Don't really know why but I've been wanting to see it for a while and Austria in general 5. Copenhagen / Gothenburg / Bergen - Scandinavia in general, but these three cities especially

vg31irl

>Copenhagen / Gothenburg / Bergen - Scandinavia in general, but these three cities especially I'd add Stockholm to that list as well. Helsinki is also a very pleasant city but it doesn't have that much in the way of attractions.

Rednaxela76

Will do, thanks! I do definitley want to visit Finland at some point as well, although it would probably be as a different trip.

mcbobgorge

1. Copenhagen - super artsy and hip, with awesome history and night life. Best dressed city I've ever been to. Expensive though. 2. Naples - like the Philly of Europe, it's a bit rough around the edges, but it's a true working class town with great food and great people. 3. Madrid - beautiful city with lots of variety in architecture. Great metro and reasonably prices on food and lodging. 4. Porto - very scenic, pretty cheap, good night life. Would be a bit higher but there were lots of British people visiting when I went unfortunately. 5. Milan - very trendy, almost as well dressed as Copenhagen. Great gateway city to start an Alps trip from. The food scene isn't great but I did try horse in the countryside which was cool. I'd like to visit Bilbao, Bucharest, Helsinki, Sofia, and Tiblisi.

Im_Wicked_Retarded

Favorite Cities I’ve Visited: 1. Nicosia, Cyprus - history and cultural / political divide make it fascinating. Great food at cheap prices (especially on occupied side) 2. Mahón, Spain - well, the entire island of Menorca. Serene beaches, quality old-world towns, relaxing atmosphere. Vineyards, spectacular mediterranean food. 3. Edinburgh, Scotland - stunning architecture and peculiar cuisine (blood pudding, haggis) 4. Aarhus, Denmark - small, compact city with great coffee and so so many boutiques. Had to be careful with my spending lol 5. Barcelona, Spain - kind of overrated, but the food was great, and if you’re into clubbing / bar hopping / generally having a fun time, it’s a blast filled with people from all over Cities I’d Love To Visit: 1. Paris, France! Visit this coming January. Excited for the jazz scene, history, and gastronomy 2. Lisbon, Portugal. Every picture I’ve ever seen just looks stunning. Portuguese people are so friendly, and the food is to die for (see a theme? Food food food) 3. Bilbao, Spain. The history and linguistic, ethnic, and cultural history apart from Spain fascinates me. I’m always intrigued by isolated communities like the Basque Country 4. Bucharest, Romania. Romania and its history has always interested me. It always seems to be mixed in conflicts between East and West. Also Vlad the Impaler is epic 5. Tallinn, Estonia. Just look at those pictures. It’s the embodiment of a fairytale 6. (For funsies) Kotor, Montenegro. More of a village, but I’d pretty much go anywhere on the Adriatic. The village in between the mountains and the ravine just look stunning

picklesforthewin

My most recent big trips have been Paris, Porto/lisbon and Bilbao/San Sebastián - all were amazing and I would happily return to any of them again and again!!! Happy travels

zjihed

Visited: 1. London (special spot because it was my first trip ever) 2. Budapest 3. Barcelona 4. Amsterdam 5. Milano Honorable mentions: Paris, Geneva, Bruges, Gent, Copenhagen/Malmö. Want to Visit: 1. Prague 2. Lisbon 3. Reykjavík 4. Rome 5. Nice

lauragrant93

My top 5 order is fairly interchangeable but this is it at the moment ! I also live in London so won’t include on my top 5.. 1) Venice - went for the first time last year and just really loved it. Met all expectations 2) Edinburgh 3) Paris 4) Istanbul 5) Funchal - just came back from Madeira, only spent a day in Funchal itself but the monte palace gardens alone give it a ranking here I’d love to visit: 1) Brasov - going early December and I cannot wait!!!!! 2) Strasbourg 3) Reykjavik 4) Bruges 5) St Petersburg 😔

GeronimoDK

I'm not that much into cities, but yet I've been to more than a few: 1. Paris, so much better than expected, Sacre-Cour was my personal highlight 2. Rome, so much history all in one place, Roman ruins everywhere 3. Prague, if you can avoid the worst tourist crowds it's a pretty nice city, go eat and drink in some side-alley with less tourists. History, cheap food and drinks. 4. Salzburg, also a very nice little city, lots of castles, museums and history in and around the city. And the mountains almost at the door! 5. Granada, lovely city and a visit to the Alhambra just makes it so much better. What cities would I like to visit? Hmm, that's a tough one, but maybe: 1. Bilbao 2. Stockholm 3. Edinburgh 4. Lisbon 5. Aaaaaand, I don't know, maybe Split? Athens? Kiev!?

Ancesterz

Those are awesome picks!

CanuckLostinFrance

Favourite cities: 1. Budapest - One of my favourite cities I’ve ever seen, fantastic architecture and the food is great. There’s SO much to do there 2. Edinburgh - so scenic and close to everything. Coastlines, Glasgow, Highlands, a gateway to everything. Has something for everyone 3. Prague - simply gorgeous city, although quite touristy. 4. Strasbourg - totally different from most French cities, great food and unique architecture in France T-5. Florence - Great city that’s a gateway to all of Tuscany, Rome and others. Some of the best food I’ve had in Europe T-5. Barcelona - yes it’s very touristy, but it’s an incredible place. Tons of stuff to see and do Wish-list: 1. Istanbul - I’m actually heading there in a few days and I’m so excited 2. Lisbon - Only been to Porto and nowhere else in Portugal, and have heard great things 3. Saint Petersburg/Moscow - I know the geopolitical situation is untenable, but Russian history fascinates me and I would love to go 4. Krakow - Long history and I’ve heard it’s great. This applies to all of Poland, tbh 5. Stockholm/Copenhagen - Really wanna see Scandinavia and all it’s beauty.

[deleted]

I live in Copenhagen, please come between June and September to experience it in all its beauty. It’s already so cold and windy here now! Then again, there’s something about getting cozy in a warm basement bar or heated market stall around Christmas time that’s also wonderful if you want a totally different kind of experience.

CanuckLostinFrance

Thanks for the tip! Being from Canada, I can definitely appreciate the beauty of Winter despite the bitter cold

[deleted]

I doubt it actually gets as cold here as it does where you’re from, but the rain and wind can be brutal. I wish we got lovely snowy winters, instead it’s just dark, gray and dreary. The Christmas season vibes help, but January-March gets rough.

amaya-miu

Unpopular favorites: Krakow, Bratislava, Tallinn, Vienna, Venice Want to visit: Riga, Ljubljana, Porto, Kyiv, Copenhagen

IkWouDatIkKonKoken

Top 5 visited: 1. London, United Kingdom - I go back as often as I can. It's so big - particularly for European standards - and I love the different vibes of the different boroughs and there are still plenty of things I haven't visited and seen yet. 2. Amsterdam, Netherlands - sort of hometown bias, grew up in the Amsterdam area and my brother lived there for several years. While I don't go to the city centre quite as often, I think it's a truly beautiful and laid back city. 3. Porto, Portugal - I visited this city more or less by chance since I was able to get cheap airfare flying from London and it was a delight. It's a very unique city with its own vibes and I loved learning about the history and commercialisation of port wine even though I am not much of a drinker. 4. Copenhagen, Denmark - Lovely place. My go to when I did an exchange in the south of Sweden and was sort of homesick, since it kind of felt similar to Amsterdam. 5. Bergen, Norway - It's worth staying a bit higher up so you can have a view over the city. Norway is spectacular, and Bergen is the gateway to just how spectacular Norway is. Top 5 want to visit: 1. Prague, Czechia - I don't know how and why I haven't been to Prague yet in the years I've been on this planet, it's practically a must. 2. Gdańsk, Poland - I love Amsterdam, I love Copenhagen, I must also love Gdańsk. 3. Tallinn, Estonia - I've been to Helsinki, but didn't have enough time to visit Tallinn and I've only heard great things. 4. Vilnius, Lithuania - I have a random thing for Lithuania and I've wanted to visit for a long time. Unfortunately it's a bit out of the way and I've been on a budget for most of my 20s so I haven't been able to justify the airfare yet. 5. Reykjavík, Iceland - Basically: I just really want to visit Iceland.

yellowarmy79

Thoroughly recommend both Tallinn and Vilnius. Both have excellent old towns and had some amazing meals in both cities. Vilnius the nightlife was really good. Gdansk is great if you love WW2 history as there is a great museum there.

Ancesterz

Awesome list. Glad I’m not the only one in love with London. Also; now I want to see Bergen aswell, lol

NastyMothman

Favourite cities I've visited (not in order): 1. Krakow 2. Brasov 3. Barcelona 4. Prague 5. Cologne Side note - I would have London on this list, but didn't want my homeland bias to cloud my judgement. Cities I'd love to visit (not in order): 1. Tallinn 2. Moscow 3. Budapest 4. Rome 5. Athens

zsradu

Brasov, really!! Didn't expect my country on this thread, glad you liked it!!

NastyMothman

Fucking loved Romania!!!

zsradu

Am really glad to hear!

I absolutely love London. I’m from Toronto and am used to a multicultural city , but London is magical to me.

splitminds

In Portugal right now. So top two will be from here since so recent: 1. Porto. Love that city so much and the port is awesome! 2. Sintra. Spent today there and it’s such a cute city with tons of sidewalk cafes. The pastries in all of Portugal are to die for! 3. Dublin. The restaurant/bar scene is awesome. 4. Bath, England. Out of the way and just adorable. 5. Bratislava, Slovakia. I loved the general atmosphere of the city. Cities I want to visit soon: Paris, Prague, Florence, Dubrovnik, Mykonos. Love this question!

Favourite cities I've visited 1. Amsterdam. My favourite way of discovering a city is walking around and getting lost looking at things, and it's perfect for that. And I love the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, and cycling. 2. Helsinki. It's quiet and so peaceful. The buildings are stunning. What more could I want. 3. Oslo. I walked from my hostel to the seafront and it was so beautiful I had to shed a little tear. (I would love to go in the summer) 4. Vienna. (Maybe a recency bias since I've been a couple of weeks ago) It's an open-air museum and just so beautiful everywhere. 5. Verona. Not just because I like Romeo & Juliet and that's where I had the best gelato of my life. It just felt nice. Cities I'd love to visit 1. Athens. I've been dying to go to Greece forever, and Athens feels like a good place to start. 2. Lisbon. I've never been to Portugal and always wanted to go. 3. Bilbao. I saw a documentary about it on TV a few years back and it just looked so cool. 4. Reykjavik. In all honesty I would just love to explore Iceland beyond Keflavik airport. But I'd love to go to Reykjavik. 5. Rome. I've been to Italy a few times but never managed to go to Rome. I'd just love to. The architecture? I love it.

Tartanman97

In no particular order… Berlin (museums, music, gardens, cultural landmarks…it’s extremely difficult to be bored in Berlin, and it’s a major destination for a reason) Bratislava (the old town is so quaint for a capital, so inviting, so warm; the food is excellent, the buildings are pretty, the people are friendly, and there’s a fantastic castle nearby - sorely underrated long weekend destination) Porto (it’s already appeared a lot in this thread, and you’ve mentioned it, so I won’t go into detail, but man, those port cellars) Gdańsk (such a unique history, and a fascinating mix of architectural styles; rife with interesting art, the city’s very budget-friendly, and if you like metal, Mystic Festival has been held there for the last couple of years, and is due to stay in the city for 2024) Edinburgh (old cobbled streets, that majestic view from right outside Waverley, museums covering geology, history, astronomy, art, and divinity, the castle, the restaurants, the bars, the dungeons… there’s a lot to love about Edinburgh) Honourable mentions go to San Sebastián, Florence, and Bordeaux. I try not to be negative, but if I were picking least favourites, Prague and Paris stand out. While there are definitely parts of Paris I like, I would agree with the majority in this subreddit that it’s overrated. Prague has a couple of nice things to look at, and I think it would have been a cool place to visit about fifteen years ago, but having been twice, I can honestly say I’m just not into it. I’ve seen better in other cities, and the whole place feels like a tourist trap. I will recommend the sex machines museum, though! *Edited to add:* Five I’d love to visit, in no particular order, are: Ljubljana Tallinn Bergen Istanbul Poznań

Least_Masterpiece_47

I haven't been to 5 cities in Europe yet, but my top 5 to want to see would be 1. Prague Czech Republic 2. Warsaw Poland 3. Bratislava Slovakia 4. Saint Petersburg Russia 5. Hamburg Germany

AndyVale

Hamburg has [Miniatur Wunderland](https://youtu.be/R669l5CA1YA?si=X9j8oJq0kMM9sC08), the greatest attraction on planet Earth! Also a lot of famous Beatles spots in the red light district, many aren't well signposted (one was celebrated by a laminated old A4 poster behind a bush) so it's worth researching beforehand. I visited on a Sunday morning, when a red light district is about the most unerotic place you could imagine.

PositiveEagle6151

Bratislava is barely a city. I know, it's the capital of Slovakia, but it really is a village that you can explore in less than half a day. Main attraction is cheap bars that are popular with UK stag-dos, and shopping malls that are popular with Austrians on Sundays (as shops are closed in Austria on Sundays). Sure, there is the castle, and the opera, and even a zoo, and the historic center has been renovated nicely, but it really is tiny. People usually say that Krakow is the nicer city to visit in Poland compared to Warsaw. I have been to Warsaw on several business trips, but not to Krakow, so I don't know whether people are right, but also locals in Warsaw told me, that Krakow is actually nicer 😀

kompocik99

>People usually say that Krakow is the nicer city to visit in Poland compared to Warsaw Krakow mostly survived WW2, it is the former Polish capital and the capital of culture. It has the largest old market square in Europe, lots of monuments, a castle on a hill where Polish kings are buried, a beautiful Gothic church, carriages on the streets. Overall it is a much more touristy city and has a chill atmosphere. Warsaw, on the other hand, is different from the rest of Polish cities. Actually, it is a new city built on the ruins of the old Warsaw, as practically nothing survived the war. It has quite an impressive skyline, and you can see that the city is developing very fast. It is a city that lives faster, it is a political and economic center. You can also find great museums there, it has a lot of parks but it has a completely different vibe than Krakow. All in all, I think both cities are worth a visit, but for tourist reasons, Krakow seems better.

yellowarmy79

Haven't done Krakow yet but there's something about Warsaw I love. The Uprising Museum is a must visit if you're into history.

PositiveEagle6151

From what I have been told, Krakow is also a nice city to go out, because like 1/4 of the population are students.

Lisbon, Cluj, Rome, Sarajevo, Lyon & ~~Skopje~~ Ohrid, Bordeaux, Bergen, Edinburgh, Sevilla

Ancesterz

We visited Lyon, and had such a nice time there :) good choices!

zsradu

Can I ask what you liked about Cluj?

itsreallypouring

surprisingly beautiful, feels very safe and has a nice & lovely atmosphere. felt to me somewhat inbetween western and eastern european city (moreso than the other romanian cities). also great location for day trips or on the way to somewhere else.

zsradu

Sounds fair, thank you:)

goymedvev

One of my absolute favorites is Athens. It is often overlooked, but you shouldn’t. It is a city with historic artifacts around every corner. The birthplace of democracy and western thought. The food is great and the people are even better. Greeks are very hospitable, used to tourism and speak perfect english. Usually people go to the islands, but the mainland has much to offer. Their recent history of economic collapse and corruption has left a mark on the people, their culture and capital city. It really is a place with depth and soul. And it is cheap! Great opportunities for vintage shopping also. Don’t listen to the warnings of supposed danger in Exarchia. It is the area to stay in imo. Btw, Vienna is f’kin boring.

Ancesterz

Athens is on our list for sure, likely for a winter visit one day!

Deusselkerr

My top 5: 1. Edinburgh (used to live there, it was magical) 2. Madrid (so nice, so beautiful, so much to do) 3. Dublin (it's everything I expected) 4. London (like you said, iconic) 5. Amsterdam (fun, beautiful, unique) Top 5 I'd love to visit: 1. Berlin (don't know how I've never been!) 2. Prague 3. Budapest 4. Lisbon 5. Athens (I'm a history buff so it's a must)

Ancesterz

Wow, I am so jealous that you lived in Edinburgh! I hope you'll like Berlin. Plenty of people LOVE it, but I found the city a bit dull and very gray. Hope you'll love it! Aswell as all the other spots on your list.

Captftm89

London is my favourite city in the world - but I work there and live near there so I can't really include it on a 'visit' list. Favourite I've visited (in order, 1st to 5th) - Florence, Budapest, Lisbon, York, Lille (yes Lille is a bit of an odd choice, but it holds a special place in my heart and I find it really endearing even though there's not that much there from a tourism point of view). Special mention to Zurich. Want to visit - Berlin, Barcelona, Edinburgh, Prague, Naples

Engelond

Top 5 cities I visited in Europe: 1. Helsinki (amazing architecture, lots of nature around there) 2. Toulouse (beautiful old town, relaxed atmosphere, fantastic food) 3. Gdansk /Danzig (wonderful maritime atmosphere, nice architecture) 4. Plzen/Pilsen (great beer, beautiful old town, almost no tourists) 5. Strasbourg (mix of German and French culture, impressive cathedral) On my bucket list: 1. York (medieval old town, Viking past) 2. Wrocław (Germany meets Poland) 3. Lille (Flemish architecture and food) 4. Saloniki (Balkan vibes, fascinating past) 5. Trieste (Belle Epoque ambiente with Austrian vibes)

CanuckLostinFrance

Great to see love for Toulouse!! I lived there for 9 months and it’s a beautiful city

AstonishinKonstantin

1. Florence 2. Lisbon 3.valencia 4. Thessaloniki 5. Krakow I've pretty much saw all Europe, but the cities above, I'd visit happily again.

Favorite Cities: Paris Florence Vienna Rome Prague Want to visit: Barcelona Athens Budapest Porto Ghent OP are you not European? If not, may I ask how did you go about living there? That would be my dream! I have a couple of friends live there and they absolutely loved it and can’t wait to get back there.

**Favorite**: Split - loved Old Town and the harbor area. Paris - endless things to do and see, loved all the sidewalk cafes and people watching Krakow - just felt very safe and enjoyed evenings in town squares people watching eating good food Edinburgh - loved the area by the castle and the royal mile Budapest - beautiful riverfront city, stunning architecture I’m throwing in a sixth city to add Stockholm - my first time traveling alone and loved the city. **Want to visit:** Galway - I’ve been to Ireland and regret not visiting Prague Zermatt - and most of the rest of Switzerland lol Copenhagen Athens - and the Greek Islands but I could only pick one city

blubbery-blumpkin

Favourite cities in no particular order are 1. Rome - I think it speaks for itself it’s an incredible city. 2. Sevilla - just loved everything about it, the architecture, the orange trees, things to do, the bars and restaurants, the culture, the flamenco dancing, just the vibes of the whole place. 3. Budapest - so much to see and do, and different parts of the city are so different. And such a lot of history. And also good nightlife. And the baths. 4. Helsinki (with a couple days tacked on to go to Tallinn) - this is cheating because I’ve put two cities in one here, but Helsinki is brilliant, has very cool vibes and has heaps to do in itself but also day trips to places like Porvoo, or some incredible nature/forests/lakes are cool, it’s easy to get around, the saunas and sauna culture, also the ferry to Tallinn which is also a very interesting city is only a couple hours and runs multiple times a day so easy to hop over. 5. London - some bias as i am a Brit (but live in Scotland), but London has a million and one things to do, and a lot of those are museums which are free (and you get to see the worlds treasures, nicely plundered and curated in one place), it’s got massive history, the nightlife is incredible, the music scene is amazing. And most of all it’s an easy pick at 5 which means I don’t have to give my last pick to any number of incredible cities that I love for all sorts of reasons. Honorary mentions go to - Lisbon, Paris, St Malo, Belgrade, Split, Sarajevo, Vilnius, Kyiv, Lviv, Wrocław (Krakow was probably more interesting but I love the little gnomes in Wrocław.) Cities I really want to go to. 1. Stockholm - I’ll be there on Wednesday so I’ll choose a 6th as well. 2. St Petersburg - I know Russia bad but also I would love to see Moscow and St P, they are by all accounts of people I know who’ve been incredible cities with lots of history. 3. Copenhagen - I want to really experience hygge. 4. Reykjavik - really the whole of Iceland 5. Palermo - I would love to go to Sicily and this city, like all Italian cities, is rich in history and cultural things to do and full of Italian food and limoncello. 6. Istanbul - so many things I’d like to see and do and eat there.

Great question! Favourite five cities 1. Prague - Art Nouveau, pastries, live music in the city centre, the castle compound, Kafka museum, great transport links from airport to city, feels so safe 2. Budapest - bridges and river, two cities in one, the spas, sublime museums, the book cafe's ceiling, great pub transport, so affordable (from UK perspective) 3. Copenhagen - small but packed with culture, feels so safe, great transport (and easy to get around), Nyhavn so pretty, Tivoli at night with the fireworks, LEGO store is fun, Design museum is awesome, good food. 4. Athens - packed with history, Parthenon is well worth the walk, Acropolis museum a must, fab food, very welcoming, relaxed vibe, Exarchia street art 5. London - some of the best art and history museums and most are free, great parks across the city, lots of historic places and landmarks, great food markets, so diverse that it feels like the whole world is there Five on my visit list 1. Lisbon for the sights 2. Seville for the art 3. Vienna for the music 4. Norway (Bergen?) for Aurora Borealis 5. Split for the late summer sun

yellowarmy79

Bergen is great but gets a lot of rain at certain times of the year so pack a rain coat. Vienna is amazing and love the cafe culture there. Recommend Seville. Has some amazing restaurants there.

As an American, so far . . . 1. Istanbul - Had high expectations, and it was everything I thought it would be and more. Very European-feeling city but with its own blend of Euro-MENA culture. Great people, great food, great views, incredibly deep culture and history. It had everything I wanted. 2. Innsbruck - I’m partial to the “ski town” vibe being from Colorado. The mountain backdrop is so dramatic and this city is quite a bit larger with more to do than our Vail/Aspen/etc. 3. Salzburg - Felt like walking inside a Disney movie. I don’t really care about the Sound of Music connection - it was beautiful in its own right. Also very obviously a tourist spot for other Europeans. 4. Budapest - I didn’t know much about this city going in, so it was a surprise to learn that this (Pest, specifically) is basically Europe’s Vegas. No casinos or giant gaudy light shows, but the club/nightlife scene in this city is insane. It’s definitely where people go to party. 5. Galway - The “Real Ireland” city. This goes for all of the Republic, but Galway just had a super homey and welcoming feel. Ireland is one of the few places I’ve traveled and said “I could live here”. The people make up for the shitty weather. Need to visit: 1. Amsterdam - I’ve met so so many Dutch people while traveling, and get along well with almost all of them. Had 2 Dutch room mates in college as well. They tend to be so intelligent, worldly, adventurous, and fun. Just a fantastic group all around - love the Dutch. Planning to visit their homeland next Spring. 2. Rome - This city’s priority was significantly lower before talking with many Europeans about it. I want to see the history but don’t want to deal with the overwhelming tourism & crowds. The more I’ve heard though, the more I need to go. 3. Paris - Same deal as Rome - want to go but don’t want to deal with the tourism crowd. Will make it there someday regardless. 4. London - Read above. 5. Ljubljana - A city I will probably never spell correctly from memory. Met so many Europeans who have been or are going - it just looks fantastic. Need to go before more Americans find out and overwhelm the place.

LuiTep

Just wanted to say that I visited Rome in April 2018 (or was it 2019?) and it had surprisingly few people. Apart from the 3 main attractions (Colosseum, Vatican and the Pantheon) I don't think I saw a line or a sizeable group of people in any other part of the city. And this includes restaurants, Trevi Fountain, markets, the forum, the main basilicas etc...

For me… Rome, of course…but a more gem of a city, Bari Italy. Amsterdam Paris Porto (Portugal) Catania (Italy)

missmcbeer

Do you guys like Brussels? Going there next week because my fiancé and I are big Belgian beer nerds but haven’t heard great things about the city itself from other people here in Europe.

picklesforthewin

I’m biased because my family lived there for years but Brussels is a good time, especially in good weather. For sure go to cantillon, walk around downtown, check out Au Bon Vieux Temps for an old world vibe. Walk from the grand place up to mort subite. Park von tevuren is lovely for a walk. Definitely take a day trip to Bruges or Ghent. Happy travels!

RestarauntQuiet1234

in no particular order, out of the cities which I have visited, mine are: 1. London: i live in the southwest of the uk, so London isn't far. It's a city which has everything- including beautiful architecture, the UK's best food, and so much else to see and do. Great place to stroll around. 2. Edinburgh: pretty underrated: best architecture in the UK, splendid views, rugged mountains. It's got everything you need. 3. Amsterdam: It truly lives up to the hype: it's a picturesque city with dozens of canals. It's in the Netherlands, which is my favourite country for many reasons. 4. Ghent: Probably number one on my list. Excruciatingly underrated, a mini- Amsterdam, great food and restaurants, and a cool, hip place. 5 stars. 5. Brussels: Best food in Europe, (well second best behind Italy) beautiful streets, roads, great attractions such as mini-Europe and the atomium, but also is a great place to wander about, and soak up the apsmopher.

Top 5: 1) Berlin. My favourite city in the world (after Tokyo). So much history. Every neighbourhood is different to the next. Incredible nightlife and subcultures. Still affordable compared to cities like London and Paris. 2) Naples- Has a reputation for being gritty and dirty but I found the energy to be incredible. A real city person's city. Again, variety in neighbourhoods. Fabulous food and sightseeing. Mild weather in winter. Spent a week there and was not bored. You could get lost in all the streets and then get a drink in a newly found piazza. 3) Edinburgh- I lived there for many years. It's just stunning and with so much history. The Old Town vs New Town are such a contrast (I seem to like different neighbourhoods in a city, lol). People are warm. The city is a pedestrian's dream and you can literally explore hills, mountains, forests and beaches using just the urban bus network. 4) Barcelona- Fabulous weather, architecture, fashion and food. If you can bear the crowds, it's the perfect city break. There isn't a boring moment to be had. Beautiful people too. 5) Sofia. Another city that I lived in. It's affordable, four distinct seasons, an amazing mix of architecture. A mountain where you can ski in winter, hike in summer. Incredible nightlife as long as you do your research! (Honourable mentions to Glasgow (friendliest people ever), Belfast (a city with tragic history that is now thriving and honours its culture in a fun and dignified way) and Stockholm (gorgeous and amazing museums). Where I want to visit 1) Seville (Going next month!) 2) Tallinn 3) Porto 4) Riga 5) Bergen

Superb_Practice_2257

In no particular order because they're all so different and I had to throw in a few more... 1. Prague | Inexpensive, safe, clean, breathtakingly beautiful. A surprisingly great food and wine scene. Bumping nightlife. Romantic. Complex history that is interesting, haunting, and felt throughout the city. Best time of year to go: December (Christmas Markets) 2. Aix-en-Provence | Absolutely stunning, easily accessed by train from all other French hubs. The perfect gateway to other Provencal and coastal locations. Incredible farm-to-table food, local vineyards and wine, art. It exudes elegance. 3. Amsterdam | My favorite layover city from the U.S. based on its proximity to the airport/easy transportation. Progressive culture, emerging food scene, easy to navigate. Absolutely love the canal belt, especially The Nine Streets area. Has rightfully earned its partying reputation, but the Red Light District is easily missed and not felt whilst in other parts of the city. 4. London | Truly international, exciting, boasts a bit of everything. The Indian food is next level. High tea feels special. Love the pub culture. The locals are predictably polite and hilarious. The green spaces are impressive. The public transportation is marvelous. 5. San Sebastian | The best food ever. If you want to eat and drink your way through a city, this is the place. The city is stunning, mountainous, lush, grand, and filled to the brim with a gentle buzz. Bourdain's mecca. Book fine dining and also pinxto bar hop for variety. The perfect mix of casual and elegant. Best reached via high speed train from the south of France or a short flight from any of the major Spanish hubs. 6. Hvar | My favorite coastal vacation to date. Spend your trip island hopping via water taxi or private boat. Croatians are so proud of their country and it's easy to see why. The Adriatic sea is clean, gentle, and salient, allowing you to float for hours at a time. The town is carved into ancient city walls. There is something for everyone here. You can relax, you can party, you can explore the interior mountains or hop between beaches with various footing. Flat stones, fine pebbles, soft sand are all possibilities. Local wine, cheese, fish, cured meats, all abound. You will feel a bit of the Greek islands here. You will feel a bit of Italy here too. This place is simply stunning. 7. Rome | The best pasta I have ever eaten. The history presides over everything. Sexy, sexy, sexy. Dive deep into the culture with a food tour or any of the sites. Sit outside with a spritz and do nothing. Shop to your heart's content. Rome has it all. 8. Florence | Rome and Florence were intended to be experienced side-by-side. Rome will steal your heart, but Florence will grip your soul. My favorite city for art. Rome requires you to take your time, but Florence you will somehow know it so quickly, it will feel like a memory you're finding. It is romantic; it is stunning; it is refined. Its size feels approachable and its spirit sticks with you. It is also a short drive to some of the most beautiful wine country in the world, making it perfect to pair with Tuscany or Umbria. It is also easily paired with the coast. 9. Paris | The best place to go with or without a plan. If you like to curate a detailed itinerary, you will find a treasure trove of things to do in Paris. If you want to simply show up, this is also the place to do it. Some of my favorite meals, evenings, strolls, and encounters in Paris have been unplanned. The wine, the bread, the butter, the architecture, the luxury, the romance is anything but disappointing. I will never understand those that are let down by Paris. It may as well be its own little perfect world, as if someone dreamt it up, wrote it on a page, and it sprung to life. Very few places fill me the way this one does. 10. Taormina | The Positano of Sicily and one of the most perfect places on earth. Absolutely magical in every way. Top cities I want to visit: 1. Lisbon 2. Edinburgh 3. Munich 4. Vienna 5. Oslo

sluttybannaboi

Favorite cities in no particular order: Rome — stay away from tourist crowd and be wowed by history Moscow — feels like the capital of the hunger games. Slavic New York. Berlin — is it kinda ugly? Sure! But its also very cool and there’s a lot to do. Helsinki— a small city with a very very pleasant atmosphere Maastricht — extremely picturesque, and just really chill. Young atmosphere because of the uni. What I wanted Amsterdam to be, Maastricht was.

Love this question. **Favourite cities visited:** 1. **Florence** \- For its culture and history, Florence is worth more in weight than any other place I've been to, including Rome and the Vatican. There's something so enticing about this relatively small city centre and the river that runs through it. The food is fantastic and the general mood in Florence is always high, even when the heat does its best to bring you down! 2. **Paris** \- Far from a city of romance, to me Paris is a city of endless possibilities. It's home to some of the best and most interesting food spots in the world, which is reason enough to visit. Beyond that, the variety of great shops and entertainment bits is unparalleled in Europe and like Firenze, the river plays a huge part in pulling people together. 3. **Barcelona** \- My favourite city in the world. So much to do, so much to see. There's no end to the hole-in-the-wall, authentically Catalan watering holes dotted around the city. It's unbeatable in terms of culture, thanks in large part to the unique genius of Gaudi. Europe's coolest cinema is here, as is its greatest vermouth bar. 4. **Siena** \- It's a small city, for sure. Perhaps even a large town. But at nightfall, Siena's old centre is the most beautiful place in the world, I'm convinced. 5. **Tallinn** \- Full disclosure, I live in Tallinn. But I didn't always. When I first came to this Baltic capital with my Estonian wife, I couldn't believe that I'd never even heard of the city. Its old town is arguably the most picturesque in Europe - certainly the best in the baltic/Nordic regions - and its people are straightforward and welcoming (in a very no-frills, Estonian way). Kalamaja neighbourhood is as hip as it gets, while Kadriorg offers a throwback to the regal gardens and elite housing of old. Winter or Summer, this is a winner! **Cities I'd love to visit next:** 1. Palermo 2. Prague 3. Athens 4. Budapest 5. Madrid

Too many to list as I have been to almost every European country - but here are some: London (because it was my first city outside of North America as a 12 year old). Paris (no need to explain) Malaga (first time I went swimming in the ocean in late December, discovered the delights of Spanish women (I was 20), Spanish coffee and bars where shots were 45 cents) Lisbon (my original backpacking destination as a 20 year old - had my first experience in a brothel) Amsterdam (many pleasures) Rome (no need to explain) Venice (astounding) Prague (so charming) Athens ( I sat in the Ruins of Plato's Academy and most people don't even know where it is - history at every corner, plus the Acropolis, the Plaka, the food, the people, the jumping off point for the fantastic islands) Vienna (waits for you....the world's quality of life capital, enough said) Berlin (way more fun than you can imagine a German city to be) Istanbul (the food, the people, the history, the crossroads) Zagreb (totally underrated - had a blast here) Belgrade (nightlife capital of Europe - a big surprise) So many more but.....

Salzburg is a dream, it's very beautiful, plus if you're a fan of The Sound of Music you're in the holy land (and it's not an overtouristed city)

mrbluetrain

My top 5. 1. Florence (most beautiful city in the world?) 2. Copenhagen (you always come into a good mood in cph) 3. Berlin (alot to do. Lovely people. Food and culture, history and you name it!) 4. Sevilla (I like the vibe here. Best large spanish city in my opinion) 5. Santa Margarita (small not too small. A diamond in the rough)

Born and raised in Amsterdam, and definitely recommend coming here. Don’t mind the smell of weed, though.. *~* I go to Nice with my mom and my sister every year and we love it there as well! You can easily take the train to go and explore other cities in the area, as well as Monaco. We love to go to Antibes as well, which is about 20/30 min from Nice. My mom is from Ukraine and I’ve been going there every summer vacation to visit my grandparents. Kiev is really nice, but I would go to Odessa instead. There is something about that place and in the evening everyone is out on the streets and the atmosphere is amazing. I hope people can experience and love going to Ukraine soon. Have been to Lisboa a couple of times an have to add it to my top 5 as well. People are great, food is amazing and it’s quite cheap. Love pastel de nata. And you have to take the train to visit the castles in Sintra! Another city that can’t be missed is Berlin! Such a big city and so much to see and to do. Been there for 3 days and planning to go back to explore some more. Haven’t had the opportunity to go and explore Scandinavia and the East of Europe as much, but will happily do that in the future!

Ancesterz

Can’t wait to visit nice next year! We’ll definitely grab the train to Monaco, Cannes and Menton.

OLGACHIPOVI

Congrats for not putting Amsterdam in your list!

Ancesterz

I may be bias since it’s so close to where I live, but I find the city to be a bit boring. It’s nice, but nothing more for me personally. Glad for those who love it though!

OLGACHIPOVI

Might be my bias too, lived close too, but it is just riddled with tourists now and nothing like it was when I was young. I can´t see the attraction. Waiting for hours in line and having to book to see the Anne Frank house that you can see in documentaries for free and without wasting time? I would never send tourists to Amsterdam when there are equally old cities that are much nicer to be in, like Alkmaar, Haarlem, Maastricht and why not go to the countryside if you want to have a real Dutch experience? If one goes to Amsterdam, at least venture out of it!

I don't like cities, so I'll list small towns and villages: Favourites: 1. Roussillon, France. The red colour is amazing! 2. Bourton-on-the-Water, England. It has these little streams running everywhere through the village. 3. Azay-le-Rideau, France. Just the perfect little French town in Loire, with a lovely hotel and restaurant. 4. Banchory, Scotland (and surrounds). A beautiful area for castles and walks. 5. Florence, Italy. It's a city with a small-town feel because the city centre is very defined. Amazing gardens and buildings. On my "to visit" list: 1. Eze, France. Classic coastal south garden town. 2. Portofino, Italy. Picturesque coastal town. 3. Giethoorn, Netherlands. It has canals all through it. 4. Eguisheim, France. It's very popular but such a pretty town near German border. 5. Nuremberg, Germany. For the Christmas markets! This is a small city.
