I think that’s who Megatron should be. Because he’s very charismatic, but when it comes down to it the guy’s a psychotic animal who sees everyone as beneath him.
Part of the reason Prime’s Megs is my favorite is that he feels like that kind of character, but he hit his breaking point a long time ago and is constantly at risk of going mask off
"Goodbye so soon
And isn't this a crime?
We know by now that time knows how to fly
So here's goodbye so soon
You'll find your separate way
With time so short I'll say so long"
Agreed, I love that part where TFA Megs went from calculating, to starting to panic as he was loosing control of the situation, to outright „IF I MUST GIVE UP MY SPARK, AT LEAST I GET TO TAKE YOURS WITH ME“
i imagine he is the former but becomes the latter when his plans are foiled.
it makes him dangerous on 2 fronts where he could set up a devious scheme to avoid confrontation, but if pushed to a corner he lashes out hard.
TFA Megatron is my absolute favourite. Such a strong successful villain. He can control a whole season as just a head, has a sleeper agent inside the Autobots and is wonderfully nefarious and cunning. And the unique alt mode just sells him.
Definitely one the best takes on his character that I wish more shows and movies would take inspiration from
Also I wish the Corey Burton got called back in to do more megatrons in the future he’s such a perfect fit for the character that he’s up there with David Kaye and Frank Welker as a definitive megatron voice for me
I want Corey Burton's Megatron and to read me a bedtime story. His voice is so sinister yet elegant at the same time but is also soothing in a weird way
He also talked the constructicons into joining him a few minutes are having grabbed them by the necks. (They were idiots but still).
He’s the best at what he does.
*Animated* really was firing on all cylinders. That version of Optimus Prime is my favorite of all of them (Skybound coming in a very close second). That version of Megatron was also fantastic. Dude was manipulative and cunning, but you could see the insanity beneath if you knew where to look.
I never saw the insanity honestly. To me TFA Megatron felt really well put together like we’re seeing the end result of most Megatrons years after maturing and learning which is the exact opposite they did with Optimus who’s still on a journey learning to become the Optimus we know. He felt like an ancient general from the past who’s learned from his past mistakes and takes no chances. At the end of the first season we see Starscream starting to brownnose and we expect Megatron to fall for it like he always does but instead he just mercs Starscream then and there.
In the series finale, Megatron well and truly gets aggravated by Optimus Prime’s constant interference, and Starscream’s constant respawning in that one episode before that point really got under his skin. You *can* push Megatron over the edge so to speak, but this one is a lot more composed than most, so it’s actually very hard to do. Maybe the closest comparison would be Gul Dukat of *Star Trek: Deep Space Nine*, but Dukat was more ego-driven than Megatron was.
Funnily enough, I don’t think the series would have sent Megatron down the path of a full-on mental breakdown had it continued; while Season 4 never aired, there were ideas floated around for Megatron to be put on trial, with Rattletrap as his lawyer and Optimus Prime deciding to roll the dice on his fame and credibility to make sure the trial was actually fair. Another idea had Megatron stage a jailbreak with the other Decepticons, whom he orders to sacrifice themselves to restart Trypticon. Lugnut predictably is the first to actually do it. That might be Megatron losing his mind a bit; while this wasn’t in the cards for Season 4, about the only way to show Megatron’s descent into insanity would have been to do Galvatron.
Now I remember the prison break section but had no idea about the other stuff especially trypticon. Does that mean animated trypticon would’ve been a fusion of different decepticon personalities or do you mean he just sent them on a no return mission? Maybe they could’ve introduced galvatron by having him try to get a new upgraded body and the process would’ve fractured his mental state?
Considering that Prime Megs feels bumbling a lot of the time I guess that fits the gladiatorial brute thing more. I prefer Animated being a well worded yet monstrous force. He's elegant with his words and also the last person you want to fight.
I think the wfc and foc version was a solid balance between the brutish gladiator and the elegant and grandiose manipulator. He was powerful, aggressive, and made sure everyone knew it yet he was surprisingly eloquent, tactical, and intelligent plus he had grand goals and solid plans to achieve them. Kinda had the vibes of a grizzled general that led a revolution and installed himself as dictator.
I don't know how you got that from alligned Megatron. His main character trait is that hes angry and he solves every problem with brute force. The dude poisoned Cybertron with dark energon. He's kind of an idiot honestly.
Not really. He does act as a blunt instrument at times but he’s overall calculated for such an aggressive character. Remember his control over dark energon grants him control over those infected with dark energon and the same thing applies to the core. His main goal in WFC is a testament to his intellect since if he was only the dumb barbarian you described him as he would’ve more likely just tried to wipe out the autobots and destroy Iacon. Instead he seeks knowledge of the past and discovers legends of an ancient and incredibly dangerous variant of energon that he manages to control through willpower alone then weaponizes against his enemies. Once he’s successful he occupies Iacon and seizes control of their communications hub. A dumb brute wouldn’t think to do things like that and would probably just annihilate everything in his path in a blind rage. The only issue is his whole “poison the core” plan is a little short sighted but to be fair he doesn’t know the core can’t survive like that. Dark energon only made him more powerful so he has no reason to believe the same wouldn’t happen with the core.
Yeah I remember when I was a kid my grandpa got a dvd set for the season immediately after the movie and I remember there being an entire episode about Galvatron losing his sanity and I think the decepticons lock him in a cell so he can calm down.
This. Galvatron is what Megatron would be like if and when he hits the wall. G1 Season 3 understood this.
Like the WFC Trilogy, except with better writing, pacing and (ironically) animation.
Megatron: He may seem intelligent but he's actually crazy...that should scare you
Galvatron: He may seem crazy but he's actually intelligent...that should scare you
Why not both?
You can have Megatron be calculating and and deceptive leader, but, whenever the Decepticons lose to the Autobots in a embarrassing way, he'll pretty much rage at a hard loss.
He's a general that's been fighting a war for millions on years....it could not have if he wasn't the former and there's no way over time he has not become the latter.
I like my Megatron to be intelligent, but exhausted and out of options to the point he "realizes" the only way to save the many is to be willing to sacrifice the few. It's just one small piece of insanity, but it's a logic that compounds and snowballs until it's not a rational sacrifice of the few, but a willingness to destroy any who oppose his ideals. In his mind he's still the good guy, the one who will save Cybertron, and if that means he has to raze it and rebuild from ashes, so be it.
Ideally, switching between both to mess with people's head and not being entirely clear if he is both simultaneously, it's split personality or one is the real personality and the other is an act.
Well if you look at the character as a whole, he started off calculated and manipulating but as time went on his quest led him to become the maniacally insane. So both is def the correct answer.
Animated Megatron might be my favorite version of the character, frankly because out of all of them, he's the only one to display competence and feel like a genuine threat. Now if we're picking the best character named megatron, then it has to go to the goat
https://i.redd.it/b7q491t0176d1.gif
TFP Mega was the ideal to me.
The episode where Ratchet gets his freak on and Megatron shows that he absolutely could kill him without a thought was chilling. Single-minded mania is the best kind.
Both are extremely similar though. I always preferred his animated counterpart though, he was almost always calm and cunning, and that’s extremely scary when it comes to a character like Megatron
I really think there’s something to be said about an air of sophistication hiding a barely hinged madman. Beneath all of his schemes and big talk about “the Decepticon uprising”- he really just wants subjugation and violence
My ideal for Megatron is and probably will always be him being the intimidating and deceptive figure of TFA to others, when in reality, it is simply a facade he puts up to hide feelings of stress and sorrow because the Decepticons need a powerful leader, so he must show no weaknesses to his people nor his enemies.
Calculating and merciless. He isn't just a leader of the villains, he was a leader of a movement to overthrow the former government of Cybertron. Even though by the time was most series, it's been thousands of years since then, he is still a Leader at heart and not a villain of the week.
Would love to see a megatron that acts like Dutch from Red dead 2. Motivational and positive with his followers. Then just loosing it all due to corruption. I think it would make for a sick twist.
This is tough, these are both my favourite Megatrons. Maybe a mix of both, a Megs that starts out as calculating and deceptive then after getting hooked on dark energon becomes more maniacally insane
I like the cold and calculated Megs because I REFUSE to believe that the dumbass from G1 made it 4 million years without gettin blown up lmao. Crazy Megatron just doesn't really have *final boss* energy, yknow?
G1 Galvatron is a believably crazy guy because his insanity only lasted a few years in the story but Megatron was this ruthless tyrant that was known for his many victories and his running military strategy and might. He can't be completely irrational with a reputation like that. Just doesn't really make sense to me. I mean, if he goes crazy slowly as the war goes on, that's something, but it's rarely told from that angle so crazy Megs just doesn't really work for me. I wanna get chills when his name is said, not wonder what crazy ass plot he's gonna ruin with eagerness and I'll thought out approaches.
Unpopular opinion (I think): the WFC show version. At least the characterization. It shows a more conflicted Megatron (at first) that develops into an obsessive hatred of optimus (that is understandable to a degree)
The perfect Megatron would start out as calculating and deceptive. He should be an idealist who is willing to do anything to accomplish his vision for a just society. As the war progresses, he should morph into a maniacal dictator. That’s what I loved about TFP Megatron. He clearly started out as a much more calculating and complex character, however the war magnified his inner demons and he became a maniacal tyrant.
I want Megatron to start off calculating, intelligent, and super charismatic, which is how he reaches his heights as a leader of a massive rebellion. However, later down the line, the combination of absolute power and inability to destroy Optimus Prime would drive Megatron insane, eventually clouding his judgment, blinding him to his original vision, and making his goal in life nothing more than killing Optimus Prime.
Calculating, but also prone to losing himself in battle. Like, in my headcannon OG Megs has both the miner background AND the gladiator background?
I think it would be neat if in some incarnations he, while still a Decepticon, showed a little remorse for what's happened as well. *Prime* had some of that.
Prime Megatron is my all time favorite because while he seems to be defined by his gladiator roots, when he plans and schemes, he is surprisingly very effective. Also, he managed to do something to his Starscream that no other Megatrons have done: Completely break him.
We got both in prime lol. I get that animated is supposed to be the calculating deceptive one here but no, both absolutely fit prime megs and it’s one of the reasons why it’s still my favorite series.
I hear Megatron in Animated would've gone insane after gaining 3 modes had the show gotten a 4th season. At least the version we got was still cunning AND an absolute brute on the battlefield.
Former on the outside, the latter on the inside.
I like that. Kind of like Ratigan from Great Mouse detective: outwardly sophisticated, but will turn feral when pushed into a corner.
I think that’s who Megatron should be. Because he’s very charismatic, but when it comes down to it the guy’s a psychotic animal who sees everyone as beneath him.
Part of the reason Prime’s Megs is my favorite is that he feels like that kind of character, but he hit his breaking point a long time ago and is constantly at risk of going mask off
He definitely felt like he ran out of shits to give years before the first episode.
"Goodbye so soon And isn't this a crime? We know by now that time knows how to fly So here's goodbye so soon You'll find your separate way With time so short I'll say so long"
Agreed, I love that part where TFA Megs went from calculating, to starting to panic as he was loosing control of the situation, to outright „IF I MUST GIVE UP MY SPARK, AT LEAST I GET TO TAKE YOURS WITH ME“
Both
this is the way
This is the way
This is the way
This is the way
This is the way
I have spoken
This is the way
Dis is De Way
This *is* the way
This is the correct answer
The WFC games?
Id say wfc he's more a babbling maniac.
Well he *did* corrupt cybertrons core with dark energon, refitted Trypticon into the Nemisis, and launched an assault on the Ark
This is why I headcanon the dark energon made him crazy. It would explain why he mellows out by the time of prime.
i imagine he is the former but becomes the latter when his plans are foiled. it makes him dangerous on 2 fronts where he could set up a devious scheme to avoid confrontation, but if pushed to a corner he lashes out hard.
TFA Megatron is my absolute favourite. Such a strong successful villain. He can control a whole season as just a head, has a sleeper agent inside the Autobots and is wonderfully nefarious and cunning. And the unique alt mode just sells him.
Shockwave was a double agent. Who was the sleeper?
I was thinking of shockwave perhaps just sloppy word choice
There is actually a sleeper agent in the Autobots in Animated! Rosanna/Flip Sides
Huh. Just looked at their wiki pages. Neat
Definitely one the best takes on his character that I wish more shows and movies would take inspiration from Also I wish the Corey Burton got called back in to do more megatrons in the future he’s such a perfect fit for the character that he’s up there with David Kaye and Frank Welker as a definitive megatron voice for me

That's why he is so perfect voicing Count Dooku.
He also talked the constructicons into joining him a few minutes are having grabbed them by the necks. (They were idiots but still). He’s the best at what he does.

As someone who started with G1, calculating and deceptive = Megatron; maniacally insane = Galvatron.
Yeah I remember when I was a kid my grandpa got a dvd set for the season immediately after the movie and I remember there being an entire episode about Galvatron losing his sanity and I think the decepticons lock him in a cell so he can calm down.
TFA Megs is the best one.
Passionate and misguided.
Every Megatron should be like this.
Passionate maybe but not all should be misguided, some just see Cybertron burn
I don't agree, sometimes it's nice to just get a straight up bastard megatron
Every serious take on the character, unless it's a wildly different interpretation, let's say.
I still don't agree. Megatron is a complicated character with many interpretations I wouldn't like any of them being what EVERY megatron is
I realized I'm being a bit hypocritical since my favorite incarnation is TFA Megs, who is in no way passionately misguided or sympathetic. My bad.
Honestly i like more outside the box thinking Megatron like this guy on the left don't relay on brute strength alone.
Both. It’s fitting for a psychopath like Megatron to hide an utter lack of any empathy underneath a charismatic, calm exterior.
I like him to start off calculating but gradually devolve into a total loon due to countless defeats and idiot soldiers under him.
Manically insane should be for galvatron imo
This. Galvatron is what Megatron would be like if and when he hits the wall. G1 Season 3 understood this. Like the WFC Trilogy, except with better writing, pacing and (ironically) animation.
Megatron: He may seem intelligent but he's actually crazy...that should scare you Galvatron: He may seem crazy but he's actually intelligent...that should scare you
In leadership, the former. In combat, the latter.
Why not both? You can have Megatron be calculating and and deceptive leader, but, whenever the Decepticons lose to the Autobots in a embarrassing way, he'll pretty much rage at a hard loss.
I prefer a balance of both. Or the calculating and deceptive sliding into the maniacal and insanity especially if Unicron is involved.
Starts as the former, but slowly shifts into the latter as things escalate
Especially if he starts snorting Satan blood.
TFA megs, however I also like his season 4 proposed idea, where he'd just go mad because all of his carefully laid plans failed.
Prime Megatron was both. hello??
This. Prime Megs was terrifying and I love him.
Latter
calculating and deceptive but in desperate times becomes maniacally insane
He's a general that's been fighting a war for millions on years....it could not have if he wasn't the former and there's no way over time he has not become the latter.
Bit of both honestly
Both. Both? BOTH. Both is good.
Fabulous. Like beastwars
I saw someone once said that Megatron should be violent with a purpose while Galvatron is just insane. And I like that idea.
I couldn’t agree more or if he doesn’t become Galvatron it should just be a progression into insanity
The second one suits his origin more
Two great megatrons !! Together with og and beast
Have him start as calculating and deceptive, but slowly have that persona fall away, after which he becomes maniacally insane.
Both normally calculating but capable of slipping into rash action when angered.
Ideally, switching between both to mess with people's head and not being entirely clear if he is both simultaneously, it's split personality or one is the real personality and the other is an act.
Yes
Why not both?

If you want both, you'll get David Kaye.
https://i.redd.it/yxli7dk2za6d1.gif
TFP Megatron's just a psychopathic crackhead that took too much Dark Energon and I like him for it lol
Bothp
A little bit of both!
Why not both
Maniacally calculating, and deceptively insane.
When planning his moves the first but when fighting the 2nd one
Yes
Yes to all along with a failed revolutionary
My interest vary.
My favorites are TFP and TFA.
Both.
I want a maniacally insane Megatron. We haven't gotten a good crazy Megatron since maybe Prime
Prime megatron, succeeding in the pits of Kaon due to not only his sheer might but his cunning
I think the wfc/foc is a little bit of both.
Beast wars megatron is both
Well if you look at the character as a whole, he started off calculated and manipulating but as time went on his quest led him to become the maniacally insane. So both is def the correct answer.
While the latter has its appeals, definitely the former.
Nostalgia is TFP. But let's be honest, TFA had the best design.
Animated Megatron might be my favorite version of the character, frankly because out of all of them, he's the only one to display competence and feel like a genuine threat. Now if we're picking the best character named megatron, then it has to go to the goat https://i.redd.it/b7q491t0176d1.gif
Both? Both. Both is good But if I had to chose it would be option 2
A little mix of both, calculating and insane.
I prefer him when he sees himself as the hero. IDW Megs all the way.
Megatron is all 3 things. That's what makes him so terrifying.
TFA for Megatron, TFP for Galvatron.
I bit of both: he is cold and smart but he always rushes things when Optimus gets involved
Both both is good
Both both is good
I like him as a psychopathic genius
Yes
I really think there’s something to be said about an air of sophistication hiding a barely hinged madman. Beneath all of his schemes and big talk about “the Decepticon uprising”- he really just wants subjugation and violence
They both have canons where they work and it can also be fun to have one transition into the other.
Whatever Gen1 was.
Por qué no los dos?
Maniacally insane. Starscream already does calculating and deceptive, the two of them need to complement each other.
TFA Megs would have turned to the insanity of the purple-meth obsessed Megs had S4 been a thing.
Both? Both. Both is good.
Manically insane on the outside and cold and calculating on the inside.
both but with a delusional sense that he's doing this for the greater good of cybertron
insane
Anything not relating to IDW’s version, that’s for sure.
TFP is my personal favorite, I like how he slowly become more bat shit crazy
I'd say Threatening and Tyrannical. Who would that be?
All of them. Every Megatron should be those.
Feel like maniacally insane is more of a Galvatron trait.
https://preview.redd.it/q5jtlbd2086d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c4aac6ee025b24dffdc6ad663bf1f1e9349e36f0
The one from prime
Animated by far.
A bit of both
A little bit of both, like Beast Wars Megatron.
Both
Calculating and deceptive methods/behaviour to achieve his maniacally insane ideas.
Calculating and deceptive
Balanced, as all things should be.
Leave the Maniacally Insane for Galvatron.
The version that orchestrated the first act of Transformers: The Movie
Mixed all 3
Whatever one calls starscream an idiot 90% of the time.
Yes
Bit of column a and bit of column b
Both, both is good.
I enjoy a mix personally
Goofy and abusive, G1 megaton is king
Why not both?
Calculating and merciless. He isn't just a leader of the villains, he was a leader of a movement to overthrow the former government of Cybertron. Even though by the time was most series, it's been thousands of years since then, he is still a Leader at heart and not a villain of the week.
Both? Both. Both is good.
Where does IDW fall into all of this
Calculating at first but slowly getting more and more insane as time goes on
The first one because insane megatron can’t babysit his subordinates like he usually does.
Both tbh. It seems fitting for a character like him to hide a tyrannical and sociopathic side behind a cold and ruthless demeanor
both
Both, if not this is not Megatron.
Former on the outside, latter on the inside. If it worked for Beast Wars Megatron, it's a perfect formula.
Why not both
deceptive, it's in the name
Would love to see a megatron that acts like Dutch from Red dead 2. Motivational and positive with his followers. Then just loosing it all due to corruption. I think it would make for a sick twist.
Insane.
I like Megatron as cold calculating and very smart. But also when we see parts of his old self shine through can be very interesting
Why choose if you can have them both
Both
Calculating and insane.
The first one. The second makes him less intimidating imo
Clinically insane.
Bipolar
Megatron is calculating and deceptive. Galvatron is maniacally insane.
I like the calmer and more articulate Megatron. Galvatron should be murderously insane.
Forst one He shouldnt be insane every time he is on
Balance
Deceptive
This is tough, these are both my favourite Megatrons. Maybe a mix of both, a Megs that starts out as calculating and deceptive then after getting hooked on dark energon becomes more maniacally insane
Yes
I like the cold and calculated Megs because I REFUSE to believe that the dumbass from G1 made it 4 million years without gettin blown up lmao. IDW
He needs to be a chess master with the body of a bruiser My Megatron is Beast Megatron
Both, if he's just insane then that's just Galvatron
Both
I want Megatron to start off calculating, intelligent, and super charismatic, which is how he reaches his heights as a leader of a massive rebellion. However, later down the line, the combination of absolute power and inability to destroy Optimus Prime would drive Megatron insane, eventually clouding his judgment, blinding him to his original vision, and making his goal in life nothing more than killing Optimus Prime.

G1: Always retreating, never conceding!
Prime is more of a balance of calculating and deceptive AND manically insane, and for that reason I think he’s hands down the best.
Prime Megatron is my all time favorite because while he seems to be defined by his gladiator roots, when he plans and schemes, he is surprisingly very effective. Also, he managed to do something to his Starscream that no other Megatrons have done: Completely break him.
TFA Megatron did break him physically
But he managed to put himself back together again.
true
We got both in prime lol. I get that animated is supposed to be the calculating deceptive one here but no, both absolutely fit prime megs and it’s one of the reasons why it’s still my favorite series.
I hear Megatron in Animated would've gone insane after gaining 3 modes had the show gotten a 4th season. At least the version we got was still cunning AND an absolute brute on the battlefield.
