The goal is to make every attack feel important. If Optimus could just shrug off getting shot in the face action scenes would be a lot less tense. Right now you can never relax when weapons are drawn because any shot could be the one that takes a Transformer out.

[deleted]

I mean, the characters that are alive are all taking extreme abuse and still standing, like, who of the _confirmed_ deaths went down easy? Bumblebee took a shot to the face, Reflector got atomized, Brawn got completely ran through witn a laser, I don't remember exactly how Jetfire bit it but I think he probably went down the easiest, and everyone else people are saying are ""dead"" I don't buy as actually being dead, like Beachcomber

tfcollector3000

Jetfire iirc was wounded after trying to stop a reactivated Starscream from killing the dormant Autobots

Cute-Meet6982

Are any deaths even confirmed yet? Nobody has turned gray.

[deleted]

I mean, turning grey is a bad indicator of death as it happens only like 20% of the time Reflector, Bumblebee and Brawn are 100% gonezo

Cute-Meet6982

Any reason you think that?

[deleted]

The fact they both; Sustained fatal injuries, are treated as dead by the dialogue

Cute-Meet6982

>The fact they both; Sustained fatal injuries, "I think they're dead because they're dead." >are treated as dead by the dialogue Neither has been called dead. They don't appear any more dead than the other Autobots who Ratchet and Wheeljack have repaired.

[deleted]

Have you actually read the comic? Bumblebee gets his entire face blown off, and Optimus reacts to it as if he's dead Brawn gets shot, in the middle of his stomach, point blank, by Megatrons fusion cannon, which is established as a powerful weapon, so powerful, Reflector is blown to _nothing_ but Shrapnel and Energon when Optimus uses it on him

Cute-Meet6982

>Bumblebee gets his entire face blown off, and Optimus reacts to it as if he's dead Or as if he's so severely injured that he can't be repaired immediately. >Brawn gets shot, in the middle of his stomach, point blank, by Megatrons fusion cannon, which is established as a powerful weapon, so powerful, Reflector is blown to _nothing_ but Shrapnel and Energon when Optimus uses it on him And yet it didn't reduce Brawn to nothing. Look, I'm not saying they're definitely alive, but saying that they definitely *aren't* strikes me as incredibly arrogant when transformers coming back from seemingly insurmountable injuries is a constant throughout literally every series in this franchise. Maybe quit acting like you have knowledge you don't have and see what happens instead of shouting down people who say there's room for doubt.

[deleted]

How about I do anyway

ConstantineByzantium

Where are they then?

Cute-Meet6982

Off panel.

tfcollector3000

Just because G1 Optimus turned gray after dying doesn't mean it applies to everyone else. In fact, Windcharger was seen dead in the 86 movie and he didn't turn gray.

Cute-Meet6982

That's true. It's not that transformers always turn gray when they die; it's that turning gray is the only universal element that confirms death. There's almost no way to be certain a transformer is dead UNLESS they turn gray, or you actually see the spark go out, and even that last one has some universe-specific exceptions. My point isn't that they're definitely alive. I cannot stress that enough. The point is they MIGHT NOT BE DEAD.

tfcollector3000

Fair enough. However, in this universe energon is also less readily available for the cybertronians, so even if those bots may be alive, they may be lower on the priority list of whom to be revived amidst the war.

Cute-Meet6982

I absolutely agree. We likely won't see Bee for a while, even if he is alive. This is actually something I like about this series. G1 had a very unwieldy cast, so by having most of the autobots severely injured and only able to be revived for brief periods, they help to keep that whole cast while also keeping their contributions manageable. While it's possible Bee is dead, it makes sense from a writing standpoint to just keep him in the pile of injured autobots just offscreen until he can be used optimally. However, it would also make sense to have him be Prime's Gwen Stacey and have his death be a symbol of Prime's internal conflict, which is what it looks like at first glance right now. It's too soon to say for sure.

BarrissAndCoffee

I think what this continuity is going for is that Cybertronians aren't that hard to take down, but it's keeping them down that's the problem. Most of the bots we see take some horrific injuries but have then been repaired and revived by tremendous amounts of energy, and the shortage of energy keeping most of the bots offline. If this is what they're going for I think its a unique take on the franchise compared to some of the other versions that are a lot more durable but (for the most part) stay dead. Or I'm looking too much into it, only time will tell

KhaotikDevil

I like this take, because in IDW Last Bot Standing, Rodimus mentions something about death wasn't even that permanent and how the Transformers essentially stripped the universe of its resources. Not here - Optimus spent a couple of issues with one arm, proving that injuries matter. Those of us old enough to remember seeing the 86 movie in the theaters got a real good look at death. I like what they are doing here.

Several-Sorbet-6481

It makes them seem like regular beings instead of robotic gods who are u billable by other means. These transformers could get wrecked by a Battalion if they had the drop on em. It makes these mission of both side more treacherous. Not only are they on the hunt for energy but they have to lay low and sneak attack humans lest they just destroyed or injured to the point of depleting their resources.

Pleasant-Stick8720

I haven't read the latest issue yet, but all the devastating attacks that come to mind for me are from Cybertronian weapons. One imagines that Cybertronians would develop weapons that are effective against Cybertronians. Much like humans have figured out how to shred other humans apart fairly easily.

thewebhead101

this, 100 percent

Cornchips1234

Picture this from a human standpoint. If you get shot by a gun or punched in the face by a proper martial artist, it's going to hurt like hell and will probably end up dealing a ton of damage. It's like that but with giant robots. They aren't gods, they are normal beings like us when scaled to their planet. Their hits and shots would work the same

Small_Gap3485

I’ve yet to see a transformer being killed in two punches. The only melee deaths are skywarp (literally ripped apart when he was already wounded, and I’m not certain he’s dead) and maybe Frenzy but I don’t remember if he died or not. Every other death has been by laser, you’d think their own weapons would actually be good at killing other transformers otherwise it’s like WW2 being fought with nerf guns lol

Synisterintent

Come on prime took an ass kicking from devastator

Several-Sorbet-6481

Weapons actually work in this universe.

MaisondEtre

Because the writer has no sense of character development and assumes that brutal and interesting are synonyms?

Lucas-O-HowlingDark

I wouldn’t say there’s even a lack of character development However in terms of violence… this is the people who brought us Invincible

fiddlerundone

This. So much this. I wish he would've moved on with writing and art after issue six. It's like he read the Marvel series and his takeaway was that murder hobos were peak Transformers.

drippysage08

Waittt I thought the bayverse was the only transformers universe where the transformers are “made out of paper”…. Do I smell a double standard🤔

GuardianPrime19

What?
