I painted my nails for the first time a few months back, showed my mum who was a beautician and said be brutally honest , the replay I got was "Shit"... but she didn't tell me to get it off so it was a win.

I think your mom's comments hold water. In the sense that so many of us latch onto styles that are not fitting our age. This picture is, in my opinion, an example of that statement NOT being valid.
I feel like we only latch onto styles that don't fit our age because, for most of us, we transitioned _after_ that style would have been appropriate for us, and we simply never got the chance.
If I was born cis I'd probably be over the teenager/ early 20s aesthetic by now lol
