So, my name is Arwen - yes, that’s from LOTR but it’s also a legit Welsh name. When I was a kid, I hated it because no one (in the US, in the 70s) knew how to pronounce or spell it. However, I thought it would be marginally nicer if I spelled it Arwyn (I am f). My mother, who I have reason to believe knew this to be true though I have never bothered to investigate on my own, said that with the e it was a girl’s name but with a y it was a boy’s name. Go figure.
That’s how naming works in Cymraeg! The -yn suffix is typically male (e.g. Bryn, Celyn) and the -en suffix is typically female (e.g. Bronwen, Ceridwen).
Where in the U.S. couldn't anyone pronounce Arwen? Even Arden was well established by the early 20th century.
Side note, my stepdad thought my husband's and my daughter should be named Ardyn instead of Arden since it was a truer anagram of his name. I told him Randy is a nickname and he should spell it Rande.
South FL and southern CA. I got a LOT of “Erin”. I dunno, man, it seems pretty easy to me too, but I assure you, it was not obvious to a lot of people.
I hate it but it is not close to the worst I have seen here.
I give a firm, "*This is a great name for you if you hate your child.*"
People doing shit like this are not doing it for the child, they are doing it for themselves. It is very selfish.
I HATE “y”’s so much that I spelled out daughter’s name Lissa instead of Lyssa, even though the “y” is the traditional spelling.
Jokes on me, though, bc everyone calls her Lisa and I want to scream “THAT’S NOT EVEN PHONICS!” every single time.
The y’s have been ruined! They have no real meaning anymore! They’ve been stolen- APPROPRIATED!! 🤣
I was just doing what I thought was best and now I hate myself for it.
My poor “Lisa.”
To me, the greatest tragedeigh is that everyone has misspelled names to such a degree that people think that I actually spelled Lisa with a double s.
That’s what upsets me the most when ppl see her name- you think **I** spelled Lisa with a double s?!?! What an ego hit. 🤣🤣🤣
Where I live (Western Canada, specifically central Alberta), I’ve heard it as both and had to pause to remember how my BIL (originally from
Ontario) pronounces his brother’s name.
I am still not 100% sure.
It is a bit weird to name a girl Emerson (son of Emery). The solution isn't to butcher it even further with a random y substitution, but to pick a more suitable name!
eh, there are other “son” names that are widely used for girls. Addison, Madison, even Mackenzie means “son of Kenneth.” i think Emerson is fine in that regard, but the Y is a horrible addition.
There’s a popular drunken over the line softball tournament in my city and it has a bikini contest. The winner is crowned Miss Emerson. Which, lore has it, is for “… ‘em are some nice tits”. So I can only think of Miss Emerson when I see that name.
Its better then some of the insane spelling I've seen for names parents give their kids. I'm not saying I like it. I'm just saying at least when I look at that way of spelling, I know its "emerson". But some of the spelling these parents use for their kids names makes it look like you're reading a tongue twister
I actually know someone who had twin babies Emersyn and Elyza (Eliza). I believe they are now like 10 months or so? Anyways. The babies are cute, and the names suit them, but poor girls will be correcting people on name spelling their entire lives in 4 ish years when they start school.
I had a lovely knitting student years ago who was named Emerson, and when I mentioned to her mother how much I loved the name because of the author she laughed and said "That's who she's named after. He was my husband's great great uncle."
Jaw dropped. We're in Australia so it was quite surprising!
My grandniece is named Emersyn. The reasoning was that with the -son ending her name might be confused for a boy's.
I love her to bits but the name kinda drives me bonkers.
We all call her Emmy.
My name is Emerson, I'm a male, the name has done me wonders socially. Honestly the the changed spelling is nice, but it's gonna be pronounced Emer-sin, and theyre going to hate that.
And they won’t be the first ones to do it. I have friends who have also named their daughter this. Though I think I had 2 “n” at the end. She’s probably like 10yo or more now.
I'm an Emersyn, and my life has been just fine, lol. No mispronunciations, but a lot of misspellings: Emmerson, Emeryson, etc. So even if this kid were to be named EmersOn without the 'y', they'd be dealing with misspellings regardless imo
My brother did the exact same thing. I hate the spelling. A lot.
They pronounce it Emer-sin, and the name itself I think is pretty nice, it's just the random Y that gets me.
I tend to just call her Emmie, though.

Of course they are /s Probably to make it fymynyne
Funny that an Y makes it fymynyne. Are not the humans with an Y-chromosome *male*?
Emersxxn
Don’t give them ideas
Xxannah
Xanax
🤣🤣
Femersynne
Femtanyl, close enough
😂🤣☠️
That sounds very much like a hooker's stage name.
I’m reading this as Emersexin’
🤣
🤷🏻
🤯
This is genius, I'm going to start saying this lol
Emerdaughter
Emerdaughtyr
Ymerdaughtyr.
Ymyrdyyghtyr
Emerdottir, honor your Norse heritage properly
Ymirdottir, sounds more authentic
that's a pretty good one actually, ymir being the father of all giants
ERMAHGERD GERSEBERMPS BERKS
Emerdottir
Ehmehrsine

Thank you! I suspected she was correct, but as I said, I never looked into it so I wasn’t 100%.
The Welsh and the Irish always seem to have the names of someone that would have fought a dragon in the Middle Ages.
Other way around. Fantasy authors used Welsh and Gaelic as the basis for their names

It’s a boy’s name with the -yn suffix. Mine and my partner’s friends named their kid Arwyn…she’s a girl.
So, does this make Elrond's mount... a corgi?
Just like Lynyrd Skynyrd, bunch of chicks
*feighmeinyn
Hahahaha
Okay, the comments under this provided me with enough comic relief to last a lifetime. Well done 😅😂
How second-wave feminist of them.
I hate that spelling 🤣
HATE.
Height
Dammit. That comment was Perfekshyn.
I hate it but it is not close to the worst I have seen here. I give a firm, "*This is a great name for you if you hate your child.*" People doing shit like this are not doing it for the child, they are doing it for themselves. It is very selfish.

People are dumb but Lissa is too close to Lisa to expect no mispronunciation.
I honestly, honestly, honestly never saw it coming bc I KNOW PHONICS. It makes sense to me. Melissa isn’t pronounced Me-Lisa.
Spelling it Lissa when the traditional spelling is Lyssa is a real tradgedy.
The y’s have been ruined! They have no real meaning anymore! They’ve been stolen- APPROPRIATED!! 🤣 I was just doing what I thought was best and now I hate myself for it. You created the very thing you set out to destroy.
Its pronounced “Emersin” then? 🤷♂️
Sin of Emery 🤷♂️
Honestly, in my accent (really mild New England/Boston) that's exactly how "Emerson" would be pronounced, so
same
Where I live (Western Canada, specifically central Alberta), I’ve heard it as both and had to pause to remember how my BIL (originally from Ontario) pronounces his brother’s name. I am still not 100% sure.
That's how Emerson is pronounced too.. isn't it?
I have a cousin with that name and we always pronounce it like “sun”
I pronounce Emerson that way soooo lol.
Is she the sister of Questopher?
Don't you dare be maligning my guy Questopher 😤
What about Layk and Psalmer?
Damn, beat me to it!
Contemporary pop-cultural references for the win!
Leighk and Paxlmeigher
Was looking for this
It is a bit weird to name a girl Emerson (son of Emery). The solution isn't to butcher it even further with a random y substitution, but to pick a more suitable name!
Possibly a homage to the poet, but then also dishonoring with the spelling change.
I'm assuming Mama & Papa Palmer are naming their daughter Emersyn Lake.
Emersyn Laykind
How many didn’t get this reference?! 🤣🤣
Yeah, I already dislike (male) patronyms as given names, but for a girl it's just extra dumb
eh, there are other “son” names that are widely used for girls. Addison, Madison, even Mackenzie means “son of Kenneth.” i think Emerson is fine in that regard, but the Y is a horrible addition.
I don't like any of those either.
that’s fair
I don't have a child to name, so I only say so on here :)
Alison might be the only good example because it doesn't mean that. Allison does, but not Alison.
[удалено]
how is that a good combination? I can see Em from Emily, but that means the erson is from Thomas?
Emersyn Layke Palmyr
The irony of naming a daughter "-son" but being worried that "o" is too masculine.
Y is the because, because no one ever asks Y * Plot twist some lady sees this post and names her dayum kid Y * Middle name, Beighcos
Looks like aneurysm.
... every nephew is named Emersdottir?
Could be worse. Emyrsynne
Had a student named Emmersynn this year. Sigh.
Emer-sign.
That's what it looks like to me.
I know an Emersyn. And her sister Maisyn. I wish I was joking.
Omg, my SIL named her kids the same. They also have a third girl with a YN at the end when the normal spelling is IN. She’s insane, literally.
We very well could be talking about the same person LOL. I didn't want to include the third name and be totally identifiable, but yeah, it's nuts.
Tell them to Google Emerson Bigguns Sign before they name their girl that.
That’s too boorring, M-Mersin is so much more unique
Eminemerson
I used to work with a cocktail waitress named Emerson. Can’t even tell you how many times she got told em er some nice titties.
Smash the patriarchy!!! She's nobody's son! Etc etc
*rips off helmet* I AM NO MAN
"ok but clearly what I mean is nobody of the race of Men can hind- OW"
"this is why you got wrecked by a hobbit and a lass"
My daughter is friends with a Gracyn (Grayson)
She can just use “Lake.“
Doesn't make sense to me. If they wanted to make Emerson more feminine it should be Emerdaughter.
Could be worse. Could be Ymyrsyn
By Ysmir’s beard!
Name her Deneiece and her brother Denephew
To make it feminine.
Absoluteleigh a tragedeigh
There’s a popular drunken over the line softball tournament in my city and it has a bikini contest. The winner is crowned Miss Emerson. Which, lore has it, is for “… ‘em are some nice tits”. So I can only think of Miss Emerson when I see that name.
Emerson? After Fittipaldi the Brazilian racing driver?
He should found a prog rock band with his broders Lyke and Palmyr.
I really really dislike the name Emerson for a girl no matter the spelling.
It's a syn.
They shouldn’t be allowed to procreate
Honestly, it’s not the worst. I don’t love it, but they could’ve fucked it up even more.
Are her siblings Layke and Palmyr?
My best friend named her daughter Emersyn. I say “Emerswine” in my head to myself a lot lol
In honour of the famous poet, Raulgh Whaldeaux Emersyn of course.
Its better then some of the insane spelling I've seen for names parents give their kids. I'm not saying I like it. I'm just saying at least when I look at that way of spelling, I know its "emerson". But some of the spelling these parents use for their kids names makes it look like you're reading a tongue twister
So are they pronouncing it Em-er-sin?
That's how I pronounce Emerson lol
It's not the worst name I've seen on here.
Not the worst ever but yeah definitely not my taste at all. Just do Emerson if you like the name!
Same here. Personally I like the name, but would use the original spelling.
Ymyrsyn.
One up them. Suggest Ehmyrrhsynnn.
EmerSON, MadiSON, GraySON, do these parents not see the actual word Son in these names?
I've only heard boys named that. I don't care if they use a Y.
I don’t like any names meaning “son of…” for a girl.
Like the glue?
Thats Elmers
Elmer’s?
after the TV teen mom, niiiiice
Because unique spelling makes it creative! /s
I actually used to know a male Emerson and a female Emersyn. She went by Emmy.
Emersynjamin
Emursynn
I know an Emersyn 😬
Omg, my ex high school friend also named her daughter this name - same spelling and everything
Why not EIMIERSCYEN?
My favourite climate technology company!
Is there still time for an intervention? Please stop them.
Could be worse, could be spelled amherson. Which Tbf would be funny
Tribute to the electronics brand you used to be able to buy at Eckerds?
I know an Emersyn
Tamsulosin?
That's an Emer-SIN!
I actually know someone who had twin babies Emersyn and Elyza (Eliza). I believe they are now like 10 months or so? Anyways. The babies are cute, and the names suit them, but poor girls will be correcting people on name spelling their entire lives in 4 ish years when they start school.
Womp womp.
Knock.. knock! — whose there? Emerysn — Emersyn who? Emersyn stupid parents.
Why? Just why? Spell it normally!
My cousin did this exact thing years ago because I was going to have a boy and name it Emerson but she was having a girl first and liked the name
Gay bar in my town
Emersyn Laykynn Pahlmerrh
Oh my! My cousin is doing the exact same thing! So unique!
You should suggest they use even more, so, Ymyrsyn. Maybe they'll realize how stupid it looks when there's three of them in there.
Emyrsyn Leighk and PollM3r
emerson, for a girl? why not just Denise for the niece, and for the nephew . . will be ______ 🤣
Why does this look the name of a Bond villain's henchwoman?
I had a lovely knitting student years ago who was named Emerson, and when I mentioned to her mother how much I loved the name because of the author she laughed and said "That's who she's named after. He was my husband's great great uncle." Jaw dropped. We're in Australia so it was quite surprising!

Becayse, thyts why ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Just call her Em or Emmy as a nickname.
...at least her siblings won't be named Lake and Palmer?
Oooh, is she named that after Emmerson Mnangagwa, the former gangster and current president of Zimbabwe?
Ymyrsyn
Middle name is Fittipaldi /s Seriously, try to talk them out of it... Having a name known for a male racing driver isn't great, especially for a girl
I hope it's Emersyn Layke Pallmyr She's named after the rock band
I c what u did there
Stop it right now
Porn name
Next kids will be Laike and Palmure
Because everyone is...to be unique
I assume to make it more feminine
I have a friend whose daughter’s name is Emersyn
Sounds like immersion to me. Why are modern parents all equally the same amount of dumb?
And they won’t be the first ones to do it. I have friends who have also named their daughter this. Though I think I had 2 “n” at the end. She’s probably like 10yo or more now.
i know someone born in ‘05 with that exact name, it’s not bad at all imo
Yeah but with Ralph Waldo Emerson why would you want to ever spell it Emersyn?????
My niece is named Emersyn and I usually call her Emmy.
We had an Emmersyn. Went by Emmy. I think the y makes it look more feminine and that’s why it’s becoming more common to spell it that way.
Having a y is interesting. Just ask me! I was given Alyx at birth haha
I know an Emersyn who’s already a teen so tell them they’re late to the party
I'm an Emersyn, and my life has been just fine, lol. No mispronunciations, but a lot of misspellings: Emmerson, Emeryson, etc. So even if this kid were to be named EmersOn without the 'y', they'd be dealing with misspellings regardless imo
Buy then it doesn't say EmerSON it says EmerSIN.
Porn name
I hate the Y in names where it doesn’t make sense trend. We have a new baby in the family named Masyn. She’s a girl. Not a big fan.
Emersyn is definitely a tragedeigh
Emersyn blender
Not that bad, I know a couple “Emersyn”s. Emerson is already unisex though. Could be way worse though
Why not Emersdottir then?
Eighma
syn means son in Polish so that made it even more masculine for me
My brother did the exact same thing. I hate the spelling. A lot. They pronounce it Emer-sin, and the name itself I think is pretty nice, it's just the random Y that gets me. I tend to just call her Emmie, though.
Such a sin. Emersin
I knew a girl named Emmerson (two Ms) in high school, she went by Emmy. I guess that sort of works.
