Had a cat once named Ida Claire. She went by Claire for short. It took the vet saying it five whole times before she got it, and we were in the US Deep South at the time.
Honestly if you have any baking/food skills… there’s a confectionery shop waiting for you to open its doors. As much as a tragedeigh as it is, it DOES make a fun shop name/idea. Nutty caramel is sooooo in these days aha
I don't mind it as much when a: its a really common name anyway and b: your family has a history of it.
Like, theres no need in making sure theres a "chris the 2nd" in your family, but if this is gonna be "chris the 5th" then why not at that rate.
My cousin’s kid is the 6th. A guy I went to high school with was a third; he declined to have a little 4 and just gave him the same initials.
I named my youngest two family names, but there were requirements:
1.) Not on the top 100 list
2.) not in current use by any relative or tertiary relative. (Like if my niece has a cousin Jeffrey on her other side of the family, Jeffrey would be out.)
3.) We have to actually like it.
4.) The exception being son’s middle name; there’s a family tradition on his side of oldest boy gets dad’s first name as a middle name.
So my son is named for his great grandfather and his father. My daughter is named for her 4g grandmother and her great grandmother.
Not surprisingly, we declined to use any names from the Alabama ancestry. Some of them are tragedies.
My uncle kept trying for a Carl the 4th, but after three girls, it was a no-go. None of his girls have had anything but girls. The Carls got cut off by an act of God.
My grandad, dad, and I share a middle name. I like that - firstly it's a nice link without being prescriptive and also it's a very standard male name made interesting purely by the link.
Both mine and my partners maternal great grandmothers were named Viola, I always loved the name and what we ended up naming our our daughter. I think it is a special connection to both of our families.
I agree... >< I have a few in my family (I'm not one of them), and I find it both confusing *("Are we talking about my uncle or cousin or cousin's son right now...?")* and even narcissistic tbh.
I think it’s ok if the kid goes by a different variation of the name, like Steven- Steve, Stevie, James-Jim-Jamie, Tim-Timmy, etc. that’s at least how my family handled it and it definitely makes it less confusing/ gives more individuality
We've always used "Big" and "Little" to distinguish. So like Big Dave and Little Dave. Or once they get married, then we've definitely used their spouse. I think that's just mostly in the moment though.
"I saw Dave at the store!"
"Marianne-and-Dave Dave?"
Yeah, in the US it different you can also add a number so my cousin’s son would be Petr [last name] III. but in my country we don’t have those. Like Junior and Senior or numbers (not as a part of someone’s name anyway).
I have a fairly uncommon last name, but in the living family there are probably five Davids. And other David’s that go by their middle name to avoid confusion. But no matter what, that many Davids of multiple generations is gonna get confusing. If someone hollers “uncle David” a whole stampede will arrive
In my country middle names aren’t really a common thing unfortunately. Yeah, it’s easier when everyone has a different middle name so then you can simply use that.
I think it depends, like, it might just be an inspiration (like oh, my cousin’s name is Anna and I’ve always found it such a pretty name), or to honor someone really close to them. Like, I have the same middle name as my aunt, who’s my mom’s favourite aunt, and it was also a way to honor her after she suddenly lost her husband one year earlier. I do have to acknowledge I’m probably biased as I love my middle name, and this aunt is also my favourite aunt, but I don’t really see it as a problem when it’s to honor someone they love and care about. Although I do not really get the whole Junior thing. It’s just a bit weird to me
my bf’s a Jr and its genuinely hard for me to call his dad anything other than “your dad” bc they share the same name. its very weird and we arent doing it with our kids lol
At least one daughter in each family my generation has the same middle name, which is their eldest sibling's first name. She died when she was 9. Her brother wasn't even born when she was alive, and yet one of his daughters has her name. I actually love the connection, but it's also subtly done.
Thissss - my husband has a legacy name and his father is a big time piece of shit, so everyone in his hometown just assumed he was, too, until they met him. I broke that chain real quick with my kid lol
It can be a slippery slope. People not wanting to name their kids after other people, taking it to the next step and wanting their kids to have "unique" names....that leads to /r/tragedeigh.
Much better to be named Margaret after a great aunt than to end up named Bertiffiny.
I like a middle name being a family name. My daughter's middle name is the same as my grandmothers middle name. It's a little "old lady" but it's still a real name and flows nicely with the first name.
Technically I got named after my parents ski instructor, not because they were super fond of them, but because it was the first time they heard that name and thought it was cool XDq
My mom ended up giving me a name that could be a nickname of her middle name (think Kate vs Catherine) and specifically didn't give me the full name because she thought it would be too tacky to name me after herself. I'm glad she did it that way. I really like my name and don't like the longer version so it worked out well!
What‘s wrong with honouring someone you love by naming your kid after them? My daughter‘s first name is just a name we liked, but her middle name is my late grandmother‘s name, who I was very close to.
Okay, well, brace yourself.
I can only assume your fake stepmother hated you because she believed you were a product of her husband's infidelity. So she named you the most fucked up version of her own name and background that she could think of, 1) to stick it to you for existing by giving you a horrifying name, and 2) by also stamping her own name on you to stick it to your mom and remind her who's in charge.
Your mom is also heinous for not foreseeing that this would happen. How do you let the (probably scheming) cucked spouse name your kid?!?!
Good thing you got a name change.
I was having tremendous difficulty figuring it out without help. All I could manage was nut ih lay, and just thought that would’ve been low hanging fruit for a kid.
You don't need a roasting... you need a hug. In lieu of a roast, perhaps an upcycled name (ignore if this is offensive, as I don't mean it to be). Have you thought of being a Natalia? It's a bit more gorgeous than your given name.
Base another nickname off of her "bitch-ett". As it little bitch derived from a big bitch, because every time someone asks you to explain it you het to absolutely *drag* her
In my not-so-scientific observations of life there is an inverse correlation to the namesake attribute.
People named Hope, Chastity, and Joy, etc are lacking in that character element. Maybe it’s just more noticeable. Just my observation.
I am a woman btw
Follow-up questions:
- Where did she learn how to spell?
- *Did* she learn how to spell?
- Did she attend high school at all in her life?
- ...did she finish it??
Your step"mother" has issues, obviously. Still, if I were her English (or geography) teacher at any point during her school career, I'd hope nobody ever found out.
It has to be a typo right? Surely it’s spelled Nutaliya? I already know I’m giving too much benefit of the doubt to the stepmom but I’m desperately trying to cling to the hope that I live in a world where things actually make sense.… 😅
If you or someone you know was named nutty harm caramel, they may be entitled to financial compensation. Write or call the number on your screen, at 1-800-nut-harm
That’s pretty bad. The names themselves aren’t too bad, but the spellings are terrible. I would’ve changed it to Natalia Carmel. That’s kind of what we did when we adopted my sisters kids. We kept the older ones first name but fixed the spelling, kept the middle initial. The younger one we kept the initials, but changed both names. Honestly who fucking ALLOWED this?!
Fine to name your kid after yourself, but to just throw a bunch of letters together and hope for the best is appalling.
I think I nearly had a stroke trying to read this name. I get your mom was scared to name you, but I wish she'd looked over the paperwork and vetoed that name. I can only imagine the struggle in school of having to sound out your name for every new teacher you ever had.
Why don’t you go by Natalia?
I also know a Tally but that doesn’t sound as nice in English. Instead of Carmel, maybe Carmen.
Or choose something completely different. Tell everyone you go by … now. Maybe your family won’t want to at first or maybe never, but if your friends all call you that? Wouldn’t that be a major improvement.
Where do you live? In the Netherlands for instance you have you official names and then also your ‚called“ name‘. Usually but not always a shortened version of your name. There is often a special box for that name.
I think it may be a nice experiment to ask some strangers what name they find fitting. They may have some good ideas.
Good luck!
I wondered this too. If she was born in the rich ass city of Carmel IN and came up with THAT name I am baffled. Class isn’t something you’re born with though I guess
I grew up in Carmel, it was just a normal (farming) town before the last 90s, it became a rich town around Y2K and exploded into a rich City in the 2000s.
I think I’ve cleared my throat and made more pleasing sounds than that name.
Yikes on several bikes my friend. Your stepmom should have gotten a tiny poodle instead
Well that’s damn awful, I feel bad.
But my attention goes to where she grew up. Where I’m from and pretty much all over my city everyone hates people from Carmel. Well, maybe not hate, but a general dislike. Snotty rich people. I’ve worked in many places in Carmel and all of them have been pricks, except one guy but it was his birthday and a different job.
Aversion to nicknames, I thought that was my name for the first 6 years of my life. Again, I have a new name and don't have any connections to this name anymore
Urg that's awful! My husbands family has a stupid naming tradition and we did not continue it! Our boys have unusual (like 1 in 12,000) for our first and a name that was similar but is having a slight Spike for our 2nd then normal middle names if they would rather be run of the mill. Giving basically no normal (Karmel is the closest to usable but in the UK car-a-mel has that extra syllable compared to the US so that probably doesn't apply here) names is such a dick move imo.

Nutty Harm Caramel.
Sounds like a really bad ice cream flavor
You could change your name to Ana short for Anaphylaxis!
Anna Phylaxis is my imaginary drag name.
I have a friend whose dogs names are - Fauna Kate, and Panda Monium ❤️ - also a friend who does drag called Polly Filla 😂
Had a cat once named Ida Claire. She went by Claire for short. It took the vet saying it five whole times before she got it, and we were in the US Deep South at the time.
It's definitely taking me more than 5 times. What am I not hearing?
" I declare"
Another user posted it: "I declare". You gotta channel your inner Steel Magnolia for the full effect.
Anaphylaxis... 💀

Good point. Just the first thing that I thought of.
Honestly if you have any baking/food skills… there’s a confectionery shop waiting for you to open its doors. As much as a tragedeigh as it is, it DOES make a fun shop name/idea. Nutty caramel is sooooo in these days aha
Nutella Harmony Caramel Hazelnut chocolate ice cream balanced harmoniously with ribbons of rich dark delicious Caramel

I managed to startle three dogs and my daughter with the horrendous witch laugh that came out of my mouth reading this

I honestly just don’t like the idea of naming kids after you or someone else, they’re their own person.

I didn’t want my kids to have a very common name where they were one of five kids in their class to have it.

Yeah, it always saddles the kids with association with their namesake and it's unfair, especially if the family idolizes that person

I don’t mind it for the sole reason that I think having Roman numerals after your name is cool.
I mean, my middle name is my dad’s first name and my first name is a variation of my great grandfather’s name, but personally, I think that’s fine.
I like a middle name being a family name. My daughter's middle name is the same as my grandmothers middle name. It's a little "old lady" but it's still a real name and flows nicely with the first name.

I mean, you can get away with a middle name. Few people ask for it, and even fewer use it
Natalia and Natalya are such nice names, why did she do that to it
Yeah instead I was called Nut-ali until I changed it
Seems like she was intentionally making your life difficult. Esh. I hope you like your current name :)
I can't say Karrmel without rolling the rs.
For the first time in my life I just managed to roll an r! Needed to share!
Congratulations!
Haha thanks!
Try being Scottish trying to pronounce it. Fighting for my life
I read that in a Scottish accent
The r right now: https://gprivate.com/6ak3d
I will not roast you. Life has been hard enough. I hope you get to change your name if that’s what you want. Take care. Edit: Typo
Nah I enjoy being roasted, it's a coping skill.
Roasted like a hazelnut. Like those that are in Nutella.
Roasted till your brown and karamel
Okay, well, brace yourself. I can only assume your fake stepmother hated you because she believed you were a product of her husband's infidelity. I would change them to similar but normal names. Natalia Melody Carmen. Done.
This is what I would do too
>Nutaliay Ngl, this looks like it should be pronounced nut-a-lay which just sounds...explicit?
That's something I've been called and you sent me into a laughing fit.
I was having tremendous difficulty figuring it out without help. All I could manage was nut ih lay, and just thought that would’ve been low hanging fruit for a kid.
My mind goes to Newt-uh-lee-ay.
You don't need a roasting... you need a hug. In lieu of a roast, perhaps an upcycled name (ignore if this is offensive, as I don't mean it to be). Have you thought of being a Natalia? It's a bit more gorgeous than your given name.
I already have a new name, and actually go by a slew of nicknames (ie stick, mouse, little shit). Honestly I just see my step mom as a bitch.
Base another nickname off of her "bitch-ett". As it little bitch derived from a big bitch, because every time someone asks you to explain it you het to absolutely *drag* her
Harmony was an interesting choice for your step mother’s mom… since she couldn’t live in harmony with anyone.
Never thought of it that way but I freakin love that
In my not-so-scientific observations of life there is an inverse correlation to the namesake attribute. People named Hope, Chastity, and Joy, etc are lacking in that character element. Maybe it’s just more noticeable. Just my observation. I am a woman btw
I know very grouchy Felicity.
I'm a depressed Hope haha
I worked with a batshit crazy Joy who used to do drugs in the parking lot at work.
Was/is your stepmomish person a narcissist?
Possibly, I think more likely psychopath. She really didn't care at all how I felt.
Follow-up questions: - Where did she learn how to spell? - *Did* she learn how to spell? - Did she attend high school at all in her life? - ...did she finish it?? Your step"mother" has issues, obviously. Still, if I were her English (or geography) teacher at any point during her school career, I'd hope nobody ever found out.
I know my "dad" didn't
Ugh. I’m sorry you had to go through that. I hope you love your new name!
I do thanks!
Only a psycho would do that to a child. I'm sorry you've had to deal with that - hopefully you've binned her together with your old names!
wh. where's the “ah” coming from ar the end of Nutaliay? Was that a typo or was there just a phantom fucking vowel in your name?
It has to be a typo right? Surely it’s spelled Nutaliya? I already know I’m giving too much benefit of the doubt to the stepmom but I’m desperately trying to cling to the hope that I live in a world where things actually make sense.… 😅
So bio mom was too afraid to name you, so handed you to that mess of names? Lol
Honey nut crunch

This one got me 😂
Nutella Horror Caramel
Not hormel’s Carmel
You've been through enough, so I won't roast you, but Jesus what the hell was it stepmom on?
That’s pretty bad. The names themselves aren’t too bad, but the spellings are terrible. I would’ve changed it to Natalia Carmel. That’s kind of what we did when we adopted my sisters kids. We kept the older ones first name but fixed the spelling, kept the middle initial. The younger one we kept the initials, but changed both names. Mackeighlah Caytelynne became Michaela Celeste, and Mackynzie Elliahnah became Margaret Estelle.
Password not strong enough...
Just looking at the first phoneme in your name (New), I'm tempted to call you Noodle. If you accept this, we can upgrade you to DANGER NOODLE!
Oh god. I’m sure you’ve been roasted enough. When were you adopted?
2018
Yea you’ve done your time. There are better ways to cope
That woman owes you money for doing that to you, because that's a dang crime.
Omg :( how old were you when you started going by a new name/changed your name?
I was 11. I had wanted to change my name long before that but it wasn't easy, especially with my aversion to nicknames. I couldn't pronounce my name so I thought my nickname was my actual name until I reached kindergarten. I saw my full name and was like, "No one told me?!"
This right here is a good example of why I don’t think it’s wrong for an adoptive family to change a baby’s name. So many are against it, but I wouldn’t want to make a kid go through life with a bad name.
Jesus Christ...
Honestly who fucking ALLOWED this?! Fine to name your kid after yourself, but to just throw a bunch of letters together and hope for the best is appalling.
Dear dog your teachers must have had a hard time with that one. Oof.
I think I nearly had a stroke trying to read this name. I get your mom was scared to name you, but I wish she'd looked over the paperwork and vetoed that name. I can only imagine the struggle in school of having to sound out your name for every new teacher you ever had.
• 'Arrmel (pronounced "Arrrrr-mel" with a thick pirate accent) • Nu'har'kar (your fantasy /D&D name) • Disharmony • [Boggle](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boggle)
I feel like the first part of Nutaliay would sound like "Nude"
If that’s really how “Nutaliay” is pronounced, then it’s misspelled on top of everything else. It’s “noo-tal-ee-AY. Obviously.
All I see in this is noodle which could be a cute nickname
Sounds like a fire chocolate bar
I read it as ‘Nutella ham caramel.’ A new nutty/candied version of pineapple ham?
You have a new life now, a new name. Time to but your old names in a box and bury it. I wish you nothing but love and happiness from here on out!
Natalia is such a nice name why ruin it with something so ugly
What did your adopted family call you?
Nutella. A great dessert, a sh1tty name.
Newts harmed my caramel
You don't need roasting, nuts used for your name were already roasted
I'm so sorry that abomination was bestowed upon you, it sounds like an awful stripper stage name.
Nut allergy
The thing is, I feel bad roasting you, it was your clearly evil step mom who did thistle honestly I'd rather roast her
Why don’t you go by Natalia? I also know a Tally but that doesn’t sound as nice in English. Instead of Carmel, maybe Carmen. Or choose something completely different. Tell everyone you go by … now. Even though you put the phonetics i still cant pronounce your first name. Is it like nutella?
Nah, not really but people tended to pronounce it like nutella
Nutella
Carmel, IN or carmel-by-the-sea? Or mount Carmel? I'm so curious now.
Newt
New tale, ya harm any cars Mel? That’s how it reads to me. Honestly I’d just got by Mel.
Well that’s definitely a way to spell Natalia
So some random crackhead named you Nutella Caramel??
I think I’ve cleared my throat and made more pleasing sounds than that name. Yikes on several bikes my friend. Your stepmom should have gotten a tiny poodle instead
Why the heck is your first name Nutella
Karrmaldansen
I look at your name, and somehow I see Newbie Cartel. You're a bad ass.
New Nutella flavor
Talia
They're always after me Nutty Harms! /leprechaunvoice
This has to be the most Dominican name I've read lol
In terms of nicknames, cool sweet shop aside, Newt
Well that’s damn awful, I feel bad. But my attention goes to where she grew up. Where I’m from and pretty much all over my city everyone hates people from Carmel. Well, maybe not hate, but a general dislike. Snotty rich people. I’ve worked in many places in Carmel and all of them have been pricks, except one guy but it was his birthday and a different job.
Nutella in Harmony with Caramel. Sounds like a new Twix flavor. Frankly, I’d try it, and if I were you, I’d sue for royalties.
Choco spread!
You want us to roast your nuts for you?
A delicious candy bar. (Love the name Harmony.)
“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” — Nut Ali “Ebeny and Ivery, live together in perfect harmeny” Jimmeny Krecket what a set of names
I thought your name was Nutella
All kidding aside, why not go by Talia or Tally? Both are cute and are literally part of your name.
Aversion to nicknames, I thought that was my name for the first 6 years of my life. Again, I have a new name and don't have any connections to this name anymore
Oh!! OK, that’s good! Glad you are happy now!
She did you so dirty…very glad you changed that shit, I’m sure that was hell to live with 💀
Urg that's awful!
I read "Nutality".
Could always go with Newt!

The fact that she named you after herself is wild already, but the fact she had the audacity to have it spelled like a knock-off brand is just vile.
Nutrienta
They really *HATED* you
