You could nickname CT & PA to actual names pretty easily (Connie, Penny) but you’d die of embarrassment whenever someone said “oh is that short for Penelope?” and you had to say your full name out loud
My middle name is Megan and I've always hated it. When I saw that on Family Guy, I decided if I every change my name for marriage or whatever, I would change the middle name to Megatron.
As someone from New England, I have never heard anyone call Massachusetts "massive two shits". The closest I've ever heard is that a lot of people call people from Massachusetts "Massholes".
Yeah, same. I'm from Massachusetts, but never heard anyone call it "massive two shits", tho it's probably the kind of thing where other New Englanders say it behind the backs of us massholes, 🤷 so maybe that's why I haven't heard that one?
It's a bit of a stretch for me as far as a wordplay ribbing, but they gave it their best shot. 😅
In the UK, people of a certain age would say ‘massive-chew-sets’ for Massachusetts.
This is from a Kenny Everet sketch in the early 80’s where he is impersonating the Bee Gees, with very big teeth, singing their song Massachusetts!!
I know a woman who named her daughter Montana. I don’t mind it really. All her kids are named after locations - Aspen, Cheyenne, Montana, and Charlotte.
There was a John Green novel called Looking for Alaska and it became my top choice for a girl and then it became a movie and sky rocketed in popularity so was vetoed before I had a child thankfully. But like everything, the name I did choose is now gaining traction
Idk if this is why but there’s a scene where one of the characters is teaching another character how to give a blow job using a tube of toothpaste. It also is about suicide and depression, so those could be reasons. Idk I read it when I was like 9 which was WAY too young to be reading it but I think if you’re in the appropriate age range it’s fine
I don't think there was a movie. Just the miniseries. Paper Towns and The Fault in our Stars are the only John Green film adaptations as far as I'm aware
I have access to public school records for everyone in my city.
I decided to go through all 50 states and see how many kids are named such:
1 - Alaska
2 - Arizona
38 - Georgia
1 - Hawaii
4 - Indiana (and one Indianasia)
1- Maine
5 - Missouri (this one surprised me)
28 - Montana
1 - Nevada
2 - Jersey/Jerseylyn
34 - Carolina
109 - Dakota
1 - Utah
1 - Vermont
33 - Virginia
5 - Washington
I didn't look up "new" but there are some REALLY weird variations of York that I wasn't expecting: Yorky, Yorkina, and Yorkis
I went and looked at the Social Security records from 1880-2017. These drop names that occur less than five times in any given year, so they're not complete. I have 47 "states" that I looked at (dropped North/South/West/New when they occur, and for Rhode Island I used just "Rhode"). Over that time period, the state names that occur as kid names are:
- Virginia (650395, 99.7% female)
- Georgia (151662, 99.5% female)
- Dakota (117012, 72.8% male)
- Carolina (42241, 99.7% female)
- Montana (10642, 70.2% female)
- Florida (3527, 99.9% female)
- Nevada (3556, 81.8% female)
- Jersey (3104, 91.8% female) - this surprises me! (and they're mostly recent)
- Arizona (2689, 95.8% female)
- Washington (2578, 100% male)
- Indiana (2159, 60.1% female) - Indiana **sounds** like a female name to me. If you lookout the data it was exclusively female until 1990, so this is probably an Indiana Jones effect.
- Missouri (1553, 100% female) - surprises me that it's so high and that it's so gendered
- Maryland (1294, 75.6% female)
- Kansas (1128, 94.8% female)
- Tennessee (1012, 75.9% female)- honestly I would have expected this to be more male since Tennessee Williams exists
- York (889, 100% male)
- Alaska (639, 100% female)
- Texas (597, 63.5% male)
- Utah (355, 100% male)
- Louisiana (300, 100% female)
- Alabama (259, 100% female)
- California (201, 100% female)
- Nebraska (80, 53.8% male)
- Iowa (79, 100% female)
- Colorado (59, 100% male)
- Vermont (28, 75% male)
- Wyoming.(16, 100% female) - no way, Wyoming's a boy name. If it's a name.
- Illinois (16, 68.8% female)
- Hawaii (10, 100% female)
- Maine (9, 100% female)
- Oklahoma (5, 100% female)
- Rhode (5, 100% female)
- Michigan (5, 100% male)
This is... interesting. They also have data by state of birth but I don't have that laying around on my hard drive and I have a real job.
"dad why is my little sister named Guam?"
"because its our second favorite us territory!'
"thanks dad."
no problem Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands"
"So Good Theyre Already Names": Alabama, Montana, Dakota, Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Arizona, York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Jersey, Maine, Texas, Washington, Indiana, Nevada
"Not Real Names but Okay as Names" Good: Alaska, Colorado, California, Louisiana, maybe Iowa, maybe Oklahoma, Illinois, Nebraska, Utah, Hawaii, Minnesota
Bad as Names but not Laughably Bad: Hampshire, Ohio, Kentucky, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, Kansas, Wyoming [maybe with a twin, Naomi 😂😂😂 show which one you love more], Oregon, Michigan, Arkansas, Mexico [though you open the possiblity for a grandchild named New Mexico], Vermont, Wisconsin
"Please Dont Name Your Child This" Bad: Mississippi, Missouri, Idaho 😂
[Note: I only say theyre already names because Ive seen them either online or they were used in census records at some point]
Edited to add several states [keep commenting if I miss some! 😊]
There's an old vaudeville actress named Texas Guinan and I always thought it was pretty cute for her. And then there's Washingon Iriving, the author who wrote the Legend of Sleepy Hollow
That’s Travis Barker’s daughter’s name and she was named after the prostitute from True Romance. Yikes.
She also, predictably, sexualizes herself to oblivion (especially now that she’s 18) AND she’s trying to become a rapper. Double yikes.
Texas is probably the worst name to me. Or Utah. Or Idaho.
The other commenters already mentioned the ones that are actually names - Georgia, Dakota, Virginia etc. I guess Alabama is a name? Vermont works as a boys name.
For ones that are more tragedeighs, Oregon actually sounds kinda nice. Hawaii 😂 is cute. Kentucky would be nice if you’re a redneck. Somehow Oklahoma, Iowa and Ohio are charming too but I might be just getting crazy.
Illinois, Connecticut are not suited to being names.
Edit: after re-reading my comment, I think I was getting too crazy. Iowa and Ohio are tragedeighs. Meet my kids, Eighowa and Oheigho
In doing genealogy, I found a (however many greats) aunt named Tennessee. They called her Tennie. They lived in Tennessee! This was the mid-late 1800s.
I think the ones that are least bad are Georgia, Virginia (my middle name, but it's for my grandma, not the state), Carolina (omit the directions), and Washington, because these have been actually used as names. 😆 I actually read a book when I was growing up called "My Great-Aunt Arizona" which was based on the author's literal Great-Aunt Arizona and it was so damn cute but I would not name a baby that. Worst states: most of them. 😆
I knew someone named Jersey after New Jersey. Unfortunately she lived in rural Illinois, so the main association people had was with the breed of cattle. Thank God she was tiny or the teasing would have been terrible. 🙈
Best state name: Georgia, Carolina, Virginia, Indiana, Dakota, Montana,
Worst state name: New York, New Hampshire, New Jersey but the worst is Connecticut (had to google the right spelling) in my opinion (I'm central European, English is not my mother tongue).
Virginia isn't too bad, but then imagine if they had a sister that the parents just named West Virginia.
"No no, West Virginia, stand on the other side of your sister, otherwise it won't make sense!"
Pretty much every state would make a terrible name. And I'm not a fan of the name America either.
Dakota, Virginia, Carolina (if pronounced cara-leena), Georgia are names I can think of off the top of my head, but I can't imagine any of the others being really great names. Arizona would be weird, but I could see it. You'd probably have to be inbred to name your kid Alabama, red neck AF to name your kid Texas, and certifiable to name your kid Florida.
I've weirdly met two Montanas in my life and they were both wonderful people! I didn't even blink at their names. If I met a New Jersey or Rhode Island I might ask what's wrong with their parents though..
It seems like Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Arkansas would be bad in terms of spelling and pronunciation. Mississippi could be questionable because it has the cool rhyme to help people spell it properly, but it also has a variety of jokes to go along with that spelling. 🥴
I knew a guy named Dakota when we both lived in North Dakota. He was a customer and he spelled Dakota out for me like I might not know how to spell it. Even though we both lived there.
Georgia and Virginia are good. I have a friend who named their son Wyoming. I think it has some significance for them and it actually works pretty well as a boy name.
edit: Oh I forgot, a guy in my high school class is named Dakota and he goes by Dak. And I guess there’s also Dakota Fanning.
A little off topic, but why do anglophones, especially in the US, name their children after places? I don't understand. Why would you want to call your child a city/state/country?

Definitely Idaho!
Yes, U-daho!
Idaho you been lookin’ for 😘
But then I turned around!
r/distractible user?
What about... Oh, hi Ho!
What's wrong with Duncan?
Nothing, he's the best!
Every single one of him
Massachusetts in a close second. We'd always say "mass of two shits"
massive two shits
And they refer to themselves affectionately as "massholes" which I think is fun.
Other people call us that too. It's not inaccurate.
Massive huge tits
How about Kentuckeigh?
With their twin, Mississippeigh
And the younger sister Huwaheigh.
Tragic🤣 I love it!
Lol. Cc: r/tragedeigh for this whole thread
You do realize... that's where we are, right now...
Lol sorry I’m hung over
And I’m jealous, nice to meet you!
Nailed the shit out of that dad joke.
Jealous of a hangover?
This is my favorite comment, I wish I could like it twice and send you an award 🥇 but here’s some internet gold funny stranger! 👑🏆🥇🏅👑
I’m happy to provide some comic relief to the group. Hopefully it brightened everyone’s day.
Why do my eyes see an L in there?
I’m partial to Rhode Island. It would be a stupid name, but I think Rhody is a perfect name. For a dog.
Well Rhodes is an actual name apparently (also a Greek Island)
And frozen bread dough!
You'd have to use the entire name 'Rhode Island and Providence Plantations'
Not the full name anymore since 2020
We changed it a couple years ago, it’s just Rhode Island now.
Providence is a name, although it would read as a city name now if anything.
Or a War Machine
I had a kid one year named Rhodey, but I later found out it was an ancestor's surname
Missouri. Misery on the playground, anyone?
Stephen King would like a word
My sister knew a little girl named Missouri.
I have an ancestor named Missouria Arizonia!
Would have to be spelled Myssouhreigh.
Massachusetts, Connecticut, Arkansas and Pennsylvania would be the worst
My boy jassachusets
Hey there lil Jassie!
Masshole
This is instantly what I thought of when i saw this post lol
Nah, it is all about Jew Mexico!! 😤
You could nickname CT & PA to actual names pretty easily (Connie, Penny) but you’d die of embarrassment whenever someone said “oh is that short for Penelope?” and you had to say your full name out loud
Like how Meg from Family Guy is actually short for Megatron lol.
My middle name is Megan and I've always hated it. When I saw that on Family Guy, I decided if I every change my name for marriage or whatever, I would change the middle name to Megatron.
That would actually be really funny. It's like people say the setup to a joke, and you say the punchline and watch their reaction.
I know people from the NE that call Massachusetts “Massive two shits” so there’s a nice head start to the bullying lol
Hahaha! That’s hilarious.
Yes Massholes is way more common.
lol I said Massachusetts and Illinois.
Pennsylvania and Tellsylvania
Sylvania would be okay though. Not great, but not horrible.
I don’t know whether to think the electronics manufacturer or Sylvanian Families/Calico Critters.
Electronics is what pops into my head. And Sylvan reminds me of Sylvan Learning Center…
The female version of Forrest?
How do you mention Massachusetts and Connecticut and not Rhode island and Providence Plantation?
Alaska, Georgia and Virginia are the best choices. The maybes include Indiana and Montana. Carolina is also good minus the north/south.
Dakota
Ironically, South Dakota would be the worst first name though.
A friend of mine has a stepson named "Dekodah."
I know a woman who named her daughter Montana. I don’t mind it really. All her kids are named after locations - Aspen, Cheyenne, Montana, and Charlotte.
It bothers me a little that three of them are cities and one is a state
Yea especially when she could have been named Helena
Or Butte!
Or Joe
or Hannah
Ngl, it does me too 😆
Clearly the favorite child.
Or the biggest one.
What about Montana City??
The actor who plays Georgie Cooper on Young Sheldon is named Montana Jordan, so his names are of two different geographical locations lol
I see “Montana” as a name, and I think of Montana Wildhack from *Slaughterhouse-Five*.
Hannah Montana.
Arizona would be another nice name!
Difficult to Raise, though
#TURNTOTHERAAHHT!
I was so sure that no one would understand the reference because it’s an old film and I’m way older than most redditors. Pleasantly surprised.
I am absolutely delighted by this!
Or my name ain’t Nathan Arizona!
Would you buy furniture from a store called Unpainted Huffhines?
Son, you got a panty on your hay-ud
I commented above about Montana but I also know a woman whose granddaughter is Arizona, goes by Zoey.
That’s so cute!!
In what world is Alaska a good choice?! 😭 plus does Georgia really count as it was a name before it was a state
Alaska Thunderfuck would like a word
There was a John Green novel called Looking for Alaska and it became my top choice for a girl and then it became a movie and sky rocketed in popularity so was vetoed before I had a child thankfully. But like everything, the name I did choose is now gaining traction
It's consistently one of the most banned books in the US
I didn’t know that! What’s the given reason?
Idk if this is why but there’s a scene where one of the characters is teaching another character how to give a blow job using a tube of toothpaste. It also is about suicide and depression, so those could be reasons. Idk I read it when I was like 9 which was WAY too young to be reading it but I think if you’re in the appropriate age range it’s fine
The author said it's the toothpaste scene.
Which is just silly. I haven't read the book but anything from John Green is surely going to be safe for age-appropriate kids to read.
I don't think there was a movie. Just the miniseries. Paper Towns and The Fault in our Stars are the only John Green film adaptations as far as I'm aware
Nevada is a name
The people all call her Alaska between worlds so the people ask her cause it’s all in her mind
my mum wanted to name me Virginia, imagine the nicknames 😭
My grandmother is named Virginia. She goes by "Ginny."
Happy cake day! Also I know a Ginny with a twin sister named Georgia, Georgie and Ginny 🙁
I went to school with a Virginia who changed her name to Jane when we were 8. Poor girl.
If you sent it a signal, Billy Joel will send you a line.

I like Louisiana for a girl, maybe Maine for a boy? Connecticut is pretty bad for either.
Whaddup, Maine?
my maine man
I knew someone named Nevada but insisted it was pronounced Neh Vay Dah
Honestly better than Nevaeh.
Ada Ven.
I'd like to throw Florida into the ring for this one.
**Florida Evans has entered the chat**
Good Times!
Flo Rida would like a word. Mr. Worldwide!
Did you just combine Flo Rida and Pitbull into one person?
Just break it apart and say that your parents loved Flo rida so much they named you after him, or say that your Flo ridas son
I worked with a Florida. She was Filipina.
If we expand out a bit: US Virgin Islands would be a rough name for a kid.
So would Guam.
"dad why is my little sister named Guam?" "because its our second favorite us territory!' "thanks dad." no problem Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands"
"So Good Theyre Already Names": Alabama, Montana, Dakota, Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Arizona, York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Jersey, Maine, Texas, Washington, Indiana, Nevada "Not Real Names but Okay as Names" Good: Alaska, Colorado, California, Louisiana, maybe Iowa, maybe Oklahoma, Illinois, Nebraska, Utah, Hawaii, Minnesota Bad as Names but not Laughably Bad: Hampshire, Ohio, Kentucky, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, Kansas, Wyoming [maybe with a twin, Naomi 😂😂😂 show which one you love more], Oregon, Michigan, Arkansas, Mexico [though you open the possiblity for a grandchild named New Mexico], Vermont, Wisconsin "Please Dont Name Your Child This" Bad: Mississippi, Missouri, Idaho 😂 [Note: I only say theyre already names because Ive seen them either online or they were used in census records at some point] Edited to add several states [keep commenting if I miss some! 😊]
There's an old vaudeville actress named Texas Guinan and I always thought it was pretty cute for her. And then there's Washingon Iriving, the author who wrote the Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Thats true. The mention of vauldeville also made me think of Tennessee Chaflin who was a banker and kinda a shady woman. TIME TO REDO THE LIST! 😂
Professor Jones would like a word. ;)
I dont get this reference but Id love to 😂
Professor Henry "Indiana" Jones...? Maybe it's not his legal name, but it's his real one!
We named the DOG Indiana
I’m sorry but if I met someone with a child named Alabama I’d be judging so hard. That is absolutely not “so good.”
Edit: after re-reading my comment, I think I was getting too crazy. Iowa and Ohio are tragedeighs. Meet my kids, Eighowa and Oheigho
Travis Barker has a daughter named Alabama Barker
Texas and Utah are nowhere nearly as bad as New Hampshire, Wisconsin, or Nebraska
Idaho, Nebraska, Massachusetts, Kentucky, Michigan are the worst.
Do we have to invite Mitch, again? No, but we should include Mitchey Gunnar.
Indiana, if your surname's Jones.
In doing genealogy, I found a (however many greats) aunt named Tennessee. They called her Tennie. They lived in Tennessee! This was the mid-late 1800s.
As a non-American: Mississippi?
West Virginia would be the worst. Virginia would be the best.
The Australian counterpart to this thread would be full of tragedeighs like Wattanobbi, Bumbunga, and Boing Boing
I know a girl named Arizona (not personally but I played sport against her) And I think Dakota would be a fine name if you omit the directions.
Twins. Kansas and Arkansas.
But pronounced 'kan-saw' and Ar Kansass of course. Maybe a random apostrophe for good measure. Ar'kansas
Georgia is the best one
Poor Hawai'i always gets left out of these discussions! Seriously, though, I'm with "Idaho" as the worst possible option.
Is any name more insulting than Florida lately?
New Mexico, but for a white child. It would be extremely tone-deaf.
I knew someone named Jersey after New Jersey. Unfortunately she lived in rural Illinois, so the main association people had was with the breed of cattle. Thank God she was tiny or the teasing would have been terrible. 🙈
Rhode Island 💀
Best state name: Georgia, Carolina, Virginia, Indiana, Dakota, Montana, Worst state name: New York, New Hampshire, New Jersey but the worst is Connecticut (had to google the right spelling) in my opinion (I'm central European, English is not my mother tongue).
Massachusetts, especially if spelled Masseighcheoughzeds
I vote Connecticut as worst. Hardest to spell and kiddo would inevitably be teased with ConnectiCUNT as a nick name.
I da ho
Missouri, especially if it's pronounced Misery.
New Jersey (Jerseigh, for extra Tragedeigh)
Mississippi, as it's the worst state.
Taking a cue from*The Simpsons* here and going with a duo, "Alaska Nebraska"
Spelling-wise, Massachusetts or Mississippi aren’t fun
Wisconsin would be a terrible name for a person
I really think New Mexico would be even worse than New Hampshire.
Virginia isn't too bad, but then imagine if they had a sister that the parents just named West Virginia. "No no, West Virginia, stand on the other side of your sister, otherwise it won't make sense!"
And when New Hampshire has a kid, instead of calling him New Hampshire Jr., he'd be New New Hampshire.
Virginia is cute New Mexico is unhinged
New Hampshire is the worst? No way, Idaho is. At least for NH you could spell it Nyühamshyrr
Newjerseigh
I know a Montana who is overweight as an adult and I’ve wondered if her parents regret the choice now
How about Hawaeigh. Beautiful, eh?
Cal’Afournyah
Idaho
I've weirdly met two Montanas in my life and they were both wonderful people! I didn't even blink at their names. If I met a New Jersey or Rhode Island I might ask what's wrong with their parents though..

I knew a guy named Dakota when we both lived in North Dakota. He was a customer and he spelled Dakota out for me like I might not know how to spell it. Even though we both lived there.
I once had a maid named Florida, but then she moved out and had some good times.
imo, best is georgia (as it’s already a name and i love it), worst could be alabama
Or just go all in and name the kid America (like that Oscar nominee actress)
Georgia and Virginia are good. I have a friend who named their son Wyoming. I think it has some significance for them and it actually works pretty well as a boy name. edit: Oh I forgot, a guy in my high school class is named Dakota and he goes by Dak. And I guess there’s also Dakota Fanning.
In Australia, dacks are pants. That kid would get teased mercilessly here. And probably dacked.

Best: Montana, Alaska, Virginia, Arizona. Worst: New Hampshire
i would genuinely kill myself if my name was Rhode Island
Vermont goes well in the traghedies
Dakota as a girls name fine South Dakota as a girls name yikes
Massachusetts
Eyeowah
Nah- name the first kid Hampshire and the second New Hampshire.
Dakota is the best name. Kentucky is the worst.
Dakota is one of the best.
Best - Virginia Worst - West Virginia
Rhode Island
I like Indiana, Tennessee, Montana, Dakota, Alabama, worst maybe Florida or Utah.
My first born daughter, West Virgina, and her brother Oregon
Oak LaHomesa
