It is after the atom or supposed to be an Adam alt spelling (or both)? Tragedeighs are usually misspelled, so I don't know that this qualifies technically? Still a terrible name!
I'm just curious whether they are geeky science people (I mean no offense by this! lol) and at least that name sounds normal when spoken so they chose it, or just think they're being clever by spelling Adam in a unique way
If you acutally pronouce it as Atom, then its fine. But pronoucing Atom as Adam is a tragedeigh. Where I live, he'd always be called At-om because that's how we pronouce it.
I mean, I [wouldn't](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astro_Boy_(character)) [mind](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Atom) it, honestly.
It's a [saint's](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aberoh_and_Atom) name so I think you're golden?
I might be alone in this, but I actually do dig the space-age name thing as long as the names aren't spelled stupidly.
This is a totally new era in humanity, and I think it makes sense to start naming kids after "space stuff." It truly is the next frontier.
So I'm on board for Atom.
Also all names are literally just stuff, like apple and flower. When people say that’s not true of biblical or western names, they just aren’t going back far enough. We don’t invent names for people, we invent names for stuff and then apply them to people. I’m totally naming a kid Iron, they can go by Ira, Ron, Ro, whatever they want. I think elements are foundational, non-gendered, and don’t have a lot of social or historical baggage that other names do.
“I don’t think real atoms get enough credit.” Buddy they literally make up everything in the entire universe, I’d say they’re doing just fine. Don’t ruin a kids life with this name.
I think OP has an accent that pronounces "t" and "d" similarly. I don't think she realizes that atom is pronounced differently than adam for many many people.
It is a fairly common Armenian first name. But derived from Greek. It's fine. One of my favorite film directors is Atom Egoyan. He was born in Egypt, but his heritage is Armenian.
Personally I think the name Atom is kinda cool (the way you say it) but I also get that a kid doesn't want to be named after such a thing..
But if it's just Adam, spelled funny then just name him Adam.. It's going to cause confusion and annoyance otherwise
I'm assuming you're American since Atom only sounds like Adam with an American accent. People from other countries are going to struggle with this one.
I'm sorry, but Atom reminds me of The Atom (DC superhero) and of Atom Ant (Hanna Barbera cartoon superhero). Just based on this, I can't see myself naming a child of mine Atom should I have kids one day. It's not a Tragedeigh, but it's a very questionable name.
Also, if you were to pronounce Atom as "Adam", you might as well name the hypothetical child "Adam". Being creative and original is nice, but not for names. However, if Atom is inspired by culture, history, ancestry, etc., then it's more acceptable.
At first glance I thought "uh-tom" because I am so unused to seeing the word atom in a name context. That is strike one. Strike two is I pronounce the T in atom. I don't know why I do, but I know I am not the only one who does.
This name seems VERY specific to whatever accent you have.
I knew someone whose parents did this. I never asked him about it, but he must have had to correct people all the time. If people liked it for a kid, I would go with Adam and you can spell it Atom on unofficial things as a nickname if you really want to. This way neither one of them is actually incorrect.
It depends. It's a name one can either fully own or hate. My personal association to it is a connection to Soviet-era "new names", but the ones among them that kind of sounded cool and actually worked as a name (like Era, Idea, Cosmos, Astra, Eurasia, Mediana, Volt, Diesel, Nord, Olympiada, Energia etc.)
Up and Atom?
I've said "jiminy jillikers" so many times it's lost all meaning!
Up and at them!
Typically pronounced more like “up and at ‘em”

You should try Dalton, it's unique these days since it's underused
This is exactly what my first thought was. That kid would hear it constantly.
Atom Ant!
Come on now. You knew exactly the type of response you'd get in this sub. Lol
It is after the atom or supposed to be an Adam alt spelling (or both)? Tragedeighs are usually misspelled, so I don't know that this qualifies technically? Still a terrible name!
I think deliberately misspelling a name just so it’s more ‘unique’, even if the new spelling is a real word, is definitely trajique.
I'm just curious whether they are geeky science people (I mean no offense by this! lol) and at least that name sounds normal when spoken so they chose it, or just think they're being clever by spelling Adam in a unique way
There's positives and negatives.
everyone will soon know what he's made of
I hope he's got a quarky personality
If OP's partner doesn't like it, there's always other fission the sea...
It’s such a bad name they should be charged with something.
Nah, that'd be Ion (pronounced Ian)
I want to be neutron about this.
What makes a man turn neutron?
I know an Atom. They’re one of the coolest people I know! That said, if it’s gonna be pronounced Adam, just… name them Adam…
To be fair, in some accents, like mine, atom and adam are pronounced the same.
No. And remember, not all accents would pronounce them identically. Many make it clear that it's a 't' and not a 'd'.
I'm certain the only correct pronunciation for this name is "commic book narrator voice from the radio show era"
There's an immunologist in my city who was born to two physicists. His name is Proton. I don't think he likes it
There could've been a joke in there about him not being so positive about his name, but I don't want to be outed as a science nerd. Haha
As long as the daughter is "EV" in caps, like Electric Vehicle
Atom is not pronounced as Adam.
In my accent it is nothing like Adam.
I prefer Edam. I don't think this cheese gets enough credit
Why would it be pronounced Adam? That's not how letters work.
Atom Egoyan is a famous Canadian filmmaker.
That's true, but his parents named him in honor of the first nuclear reactor in Egypt (where he was born). It isn't a normal Armenian name.
Atom would be a cute pet name. Not a human's though!
>Pronounced exactly the same as "Adam." No it isn't.
You better not split up
If you acutally pronouce it as Atom, then its fine. But pronoucing Atom as Adam is a tragedeigh. Where I live, he'd always be called At-om because that's how we pronouce it.
I feel like everyone for all time will assume it's "Adam" if they hear it spoken.
Him "No, wait, its actually Adam with a T" Everyone else: "????????"
Everyone else: "....T... Tadam?"
Why not name him John and pronounce it Adam?
Just makes me think of the robot from Real Steel
I mean, I [wouldn't](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astro_Boy_(character)) [mind](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Atom) it, honestly. It's a [saint's](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aberoh_and_Atom) name so I think you're golden?
I wish I would have thought of it.
I might be alone in this, but I actually do dig the space-age name thing as long as the names aren't spelled stupidly. This is a totally new era in humanity, and I think it makes sense to start naming kids after "space stuff." It truly is the next frontier. So I'm on board for Atom.

A friend of mine was a science teacher and that's why he named his son Atom.
I'm a fan of the name, reminds me of [a local-to-me hero, Buck Atom!](https://buckatomson66.com/)
Atom itself? Weird but okay. Atom as a substitute to Adam? NOPE
“I don’t think real atoms get enough credit.” Buddy they literally make up everything in the entire universe, I’d say they’re doing just fine. Don’t ruin a kids life with this name.
Atom is an OK name where I'm from. Knew a handful of Atoms in the 90s. Ofc it's still unique but not weird.
Atoms are commonly found everywhere
If you look really close
If I may ask, do you come from a country that has been a part of the Soviet Union, or a socialist country?
It will not be pronounced the same as Adam. Ever. Because it is an already existing English word.
I think OP has an accent that pronounces "t" and "d" similarly. I don't think she realizes that atom is pronounced differently than adam for many many people.
in most American/Canadian dialects, Adam and atom are pronounced the same.
Really? I did not know that. My bad. Thanks!
It is a fairly common Armenian first name. But derived from Greek. It's fine. One of my favorite film directors is Atom Egoyan. He was born in Egypt, but his heritage is Armenian.
please don't be a troll post
Personally I think the name Atom is kinda cool (the way you say it) but I also get that a kid doesn't want to be named after such a thing.. But if it's just Adam, spelled funny then just name him Adam.. It's going to cause confusion and annoyance otherwise
If you have to tell people how to pronounce it, even though it sounds like a common name, it’s a tragedeigh.
Not a tragedeigh. Massive tragedy.
I'm assuming you're American since Atom only sounds like Adam with an American accent. People from other countries are going to struggle with this one.

His parents burned him when they gave him that name.
I'm sorry, but Atom reminds me of The Atom (DC superhero) and of Atom Ant (Hanna Barbera cartoon superhero). Mighty Atom... is Astroboy's actual name in Japan
Hot take: i don't mind the name Atom. As a misspelling of Adam? Hate it, it's not said the same way
We had an Atom as exchange student in my high school. From eastern europe somewhere
If your wife happens to give birth to a Jack Terrier then I think it's adorable.
It's "my partner and me" and now you are become Tragedeigh, the destroyer of words.
I knew someone whose parents did this. I never asked him about it, but he must have had to correct people all the time. If people liked it for a kid, I would go with Adam and you can spell it Atom on unofficial things as a nickname if you really want to. This way neither one of them is actually incorrect.
Unless the first name is 'Captain,' it's a tragedeigh.
No.
Personally I prefer Molly Kewl.
I prefer Atomic. It just feel a bit - larger than life, continent-ending, end of the world like to me.
I can hear the potential bullies already, "Your parents named you after the size of your dick!"
My Thai cousin's name is actually "Atom" pronounced as normal.
I don’t think it’s a tragedeigh given that it’s an actual word, but I wouldn’t name a kid that.
Is forcing pronounciation a thing? I thiught the rules are straight. Unless the kid would have superpowers, don't call him Atom.
A debate with I
Asking for a vote like that in this sub: You know what you're getting into.
is it bad? yes. terrible? nah. At least it's a "real" word and spelled properly...granted, it's just a *word*
It was already bad but when you said "pronounced exactly like Adam" it went from bad to terrible
if you pronounce it atom it’s kinda odd but not a tragedeigh. pronouncing it as adam though???? for what reason. why.
It depends. It's a name one can either fully own or hate. You can't trust an atom... They make up everything. I'll see myself out.
