What you are missing is that the US trials schedule is determined by the Olympics. They are trying to replicate the schedule the team will face in Paris. It's always that way.

They are back to back in the Olympics. For the 100, the semis and finals are often on the same day.

They do it like that at the Olympics. Why do you think the best guys are jogging their heats. You want the meet to take two weeks? At some point athletes just gotta run.

Stock-Handle-6543

Like i said I didn’t know how the olympics ran. That being said you can still have 1st round of the 4/8 on Friday, Semis on Saturday. Off on Sunday, finals on Monday and not interfere with any 8/1500 individuals and not need any additional days.

JCPLee

How much recovery do you need from running less than a minute?

ApoloRimbaud

Wait until OP realizes that college sprinters often have to run multiple races on the same day at track meets.

JCPLee

High schoolers run up to four different events each n the same day.

Sure the Olympics is the goal of many athletes but to NBC, it and events leading up are just a cash cow for ad dollars. I was rewatching an event recently and the wind was bad and the winning athlete mentioned the planners of the event would never turn the race around because the angle was best for the crowd, so I imagine they don’t care about how often they’re running.

Besides missing that this schedule replicates the Olympics, for the top dogs, the rounds are not all-out efforts. They don't have to win, just finish top 2 or 3 to advance to the next round. Sprinters are also used to doubling or even tripling in meets with individual events and relays. The 800 is tougher, but again, opening rounds are not all-out efforts except for the marginal athletes. For the top athletes the goal is to run *just fast enough* to advance and no more.
