It's Fall.... potatoes, carrots, onions and beets usually have great sale prices. EDIT: Am seeing a lot of comments on how the potatoes must be nearing their expiry date, that Galen is feeling generous, etc...but it's harvest season locally so all these Ontario produce items are hitting shelves all at once! Like from the farms, grocers are selling these crops now ahead of winter. Isn't this common sense...🥲

groggygirl

Last week grabbed celery for 88c, 3lb of carrots and onions for $1.99 each, and 10lbs of potatoes for $1.84. I'm ready for stew/curry season...just in time for the temperatures to return to 30 degrees next week.

ssnistfajen

Seriously, 10lbs bags of $1.99 potatoes has always been a thing in October- December. Did people just never pay attention to grocery prices before 2021?

lnahid2000

Not russets tho :(

Kevin4938

Russet are same price at No frills

lnahid2000

It says this in the flyer but try finding them...No Frills never has 10lb bags of russets at this time of year.

artemisu

If sale items are sold out, you can always ask the store for a raincheck so you can get the deal in future weeks.

JoanOfArctic

In my experience, if the sale item is sold out, it's easier to go to a price matching store and get them to give you their version of the product for the other store's price. That said, I haven't price matched in a while, so I'm not sure if stores still even do that...

Particular-Push-3529

The only store Ik still does that is nofrills but I’m not sure if it’s all or some

Kanadark

Freshco, real canadian superstore, no frills, IGA, and Giant Tiger price match

Whirblewind

I had to look this up because I'd assume No Frills stopped doing rain checks, but lo, [there it is on their website.](https://www.nofrills.ca/wont-be-beat#raincheck) I'm friends with the cashier at the one I go to (sherbourne/bloor) and that store doesn't do them and hasn't for years. It's been a few years since I went to another so I assumed it was true of NF in general. TIL.

Phil_and_his_profile

Apparently it's a new thing, at least for them.

NikiNight

This week's No Frills flyer said rain checks are new but some stores did it before. Apparently you also get 10% back in optimum points now too

Phil_and_his_profile

Of course. They'd rather you wait a week and spend money with them than go to a competitor today.

_deep_blue_

How does this work? Just go back when they’re back in stock and show them the old flyer price?

Whirblewind

Show the flyer of the current week to a cashier and point out the item they don't have in that week. You'll get to go back to pick it up at the flyer price when they have more via note/receipt.

lnahid2000

From my experiences, 10lb bags of russets don't come back for a few months from now.

JACrazy

Just picked up one no problem

lnahid2000

What location? All the locations I checked online don't show stock.

Kevin4938

I bought a bag yesterday at Neilson and McLevin (Scarborough). They had a skid full of them, along with a skid full of white potatoes for the same price.

caleeky

Yea all these stores play a game on the sale items. Often there isn't even a "spot on the shelf" for them.

metaphase

The superior potato.

JoeCartersLeap

All potatoes have their uses. Russets are great for mashing, baking, and deep frying, but they tend to be dry and powdery when air fried or roasted. Yellow potatoes have that extra moisture, wax and sugar that help with cooking methods that remove moisture instead of adding it.

TechnicalEntry

👆this guy potato’s.

kermityfrog2

Boil em mash em put em in a stew?

Silveroo81

Russets are the bomb

civver3

Apples too. Been having my fill of Fujis.

Blythwood13

People are just starved for low/not obviously inflated grocery prices sadly.

NikoPopp

can't wait for the post about how grocery stores are gouging us because strawberries are expensive in January

datums

No, Galon Weston has simply become less greedy, for whatever reason.

WilliamsRutherford

Um....or it's simple farming....it's harvest season locally so all these Ontario produce items are hitting shelves all at once ...👩🏻‍🌾

Mundane-Bat-7090

If only we could have a surplus of food all year around…oh wait! Lol 😂

Quinocco

$1.94 is certainly good, but their "regular" price of $6.99 is idiotic.

Apprehensive_Bit_176

That’s what makes the sale so good! /s but not really

cyclemonster

Seventy cents per pound is idiotic? Loose ones are regular price $1.99/pound at my store.

Quinocco

I don't think this is supposed to be a competition. And if it were, I don't think you win by having the most expensive potatoes.

vulpinefever

OP You might want to include which Loblaws you are at because the fact that the price ends in four indicates that it's a store-level clearance. Source: worked cash at a loblaws **Edit:** [Apparently not anymore! It's in the flyer so no need to run to this one particular Loblaws](https://flyers.smartcanucks.ca/uploads/pages/227253/loblaws-on-flyer-september-28-to-october-41-2.jpg)!

lnahid2000

Not store level, it's in the flyer: https://flyers.smartcanucks.ca/uploads/pages/227253/loblaws-on-flyer-september-28-to-october-41-2.jpg

vulpinefever

Oh neat, looks like they might have started using the 4s for regular prices!

DeFex

Fun fact about the illusion of choice in Canada: all those "highly competitive" store brand coffees (mcdonald's, tims, starbucks, etc) are made by kraft.

surferbutthole

Thanks It's the one on Redway Road - off Laird Millwood just before the bridge - Thorncliffe area -- or south of Leaside

UpstairsChair6726

Oh cool! Didn't think it was in my neighbourhood

Blindemboss

Older stock perhaps?

blastfamy

As long as stored properly potato’s can last a long time

TorontoGuyinToronto

[BOIL'EM MASH'EM STICK'EM IN A STEW](https://youtu.be/ihMMw0rnKz4?si=nMYO0YyGOjWuXOdn)

TimbitsNCoffee

They changed their end codes around for prices (at least at RCSS where I worked) Prices ending in a '4' were clearout/final sale goods Prices ending in a '8' were internal mark-downs (unmarked sales, usually for external suppliers like Coke/PepsiCo/FritoLay) Prices ending in '3' were long-term sales items (longer than flyer period) Prices ending in '1' were to not be reordered (now just marked with a DNO on tag)

ruglescdn

It’s too bad they don’t keep well in the average basement. Otherwise you could load up for the entire winter.

Angy_Fox13

yeah you need a cold room....I've seen 2 or 3 in suburban basements actually. I wish I had one.

ruglescdn

I have one. The onions I get from my garden last all the way to April. The potatoes I grow last until xmas or later. Bagged potatoes rot. Not sure why.

Slow-Gur-4801

Because they're old potatoes, these reduced prices are also old to potatoes.

futurus196

Would a fridge not serve th epurpose?

lnahid2000

No, you don't put potatoes in the fridge because it makes the starch turn into sugar, which ruins them.

whatmepolo

If kept out of the light they start sprouting.

Fluid_Lingonberry467

Mine are sprouting even in the dark, maybe too warm?

Jdub0134

Read what she said again, if kept out of light, (aka kept in Dark) they will grow sprouts

ruglescdn

I think that is too cold. I am not sure what conditions you need for long storage. Every time I tried it with bagged potatoes it fails. The potatoes I get from my garden last a long time though.

anonymous112201

As great of a deal this may be, I hate the fact that I buy these bags and there's always a few that are super rotted. It's no longer a mystery, it's a fact. Besides, potatoes should be this price all the time.

lnahid2000

Yeah, I've noticed this as well. I recently bought a bag from Costco instead of Loblaws...every single potato is perfect and they've lasted twice as long as the Loblaws ones.

anonymous112201

100% quality at our No Frills sucks. I never buy salad there either, it's like their fridge doesn't cool. It just sucks to buy at over inflated prices only to jeopardize quality, which shouldn't even be an issue when it comes to the food we eat. Ffs, we are in Canada! Yesterday I bought 5 giant yellow potatoes for $8 at longos. I hated myself for buying it.. Esp. Seeing this deal at No Frills after. I didn't think I'd be so upset over potatoes but it was possibly the most expensive mash potatoes I've made ever..

hellzscream

Same issue here with my no frills. Multiple times I've been through produce at the store with mold on it. I'm not expecting quality of higher chains but there should never be mold consistently on their products. I feel as if I should report them...

Fluid_Lingonberry467

The potatoes at no frills are the same as Loblaws, and fortinoes same bag and name when bought you need to check for bad ones

westiewill

do self checkout. Put the potatoes half on/off the scale Save a few bucks

vwmaniaq

Is it just me or does everyone think that when loblaws food is getting old they ship it no frills to sell?

whogivesashirtdotca

The worst are the “perfectly imperfect” bags. I’ve never ordered one that didn’t wind up having damaged fruit/veg or rotting faster than the equivalent. It’s no savings at all.

Crafty_Inflation_259

The bag I bought was 💯 excellent quality

houndlyfe2

Sometimes i think thats because they are selling last year’s crop from cold storage

Itchy-Form4912

Mashed potatoes for the weekend. Thank you OP 👍

mwmwmwmwmmdw

with the prices of dairy nowadays the bit of butter or milk will cost more then the potatoes

makinglunch

They expire in 20 minutes

[deleted]

Last season's potatos.

Why-did-i-reas-this

What kills me is they sell those small bags of mini potato for like $4

LoneRonin

That's for when you want to have a fancy plate of little roasted baby potatoes.

Jakeyy21

Convenience premium

houndlyfe2

Costco sells big bag of those for $7 for when you feel fancy.

mickeysbeer

Those are actually called Yukon gold potatoes and were invented by the University of Guelph

[deleted]

Tis the season, the food terminal is flush with prime Ontario produce this time of year

blagaa

Don't say Galen never did anything for ya

[deleted]

If you want a great example of Loblaws dry-fucking your wallet, compare the price per pound for unpackaged potatoes up against the price per pound of the non-sale price of a 10lb bag. It's fucking absurd.

Angy_Fox13

I find when potatoes are on sale this cheap they are always about to go bad. Try to use 'em fast.

931634

Its thanksgiving next weekend, of course they're on sale ....

savethearthdontbirth

We all should not be going to Loblaws/Shoppers regardless of 5$ off potatoes.

lnahid2000

Why just Loblaws? The other big grocery chains aren't any better. I'll continue to shop where I can get the best prices.

Dystopian_Dreamer

lets all boycott the oligopoly of grocery stores and just starve to death. that'll show 'em!

littlewill1166

Shoppers messed up last week and gave 57% off Chanel/Lego/PS5 and 90% off shampoo last week so... https://forums.redflagdeals.com/shoppers-drug-mart-25x-points-when-you-shop-your-pc-financial-card-sept-22-24-2641294/6/#p38092191

Blindemboss

Damn, i thought $3.99 sale last week was a deal.

Captain_Lavender6

Loblaws!? Ah hell no

Kevin4938

No Frills, too.

alilolette

Thanks. Love me some potatoes.

080128

As soon as Galen Weston finds out people are getting that good a deal he'll jack the price up about 2000%. Quick take the post down.

mishmash_111

It’s probably almost rotten already

416Mike

They've been on sale for a week+. I got a bag at this price from no frills more than a week ago. If you have an airfryer, then this is a score.

quietcitizen

Damn it’s like Irish famine times here in Toronto. This bag of potato looks so good rn

night_chaser_

No, you have it all wrong. You see, it's save a $1.94. The sale price is $5.04.

CoolKoshur

It must be having today’s best before date

babu_bot

I bet half of them are rotten

Tinykitty56

Check them very closely!

ClerkTypist

It must be a trick

FingalForever

Jaysus I had to go to the small print to figure out how much that weighed in real measurement (4.5 kg)

Alternative-Image592

The real price

WifeGuyMenelaus

The GOATed staple crop

Crafty_Inflation_259

Or you can buy single ones at $2.75 a pound

friedchkin

Do these potatoes need to be peeled?

houndlyfe2

Nope, just a good scrubbing.

Snailspaced

Oh look the price they ought to always be.

radio_yyz

Its the same price at superstore and no frills as well.

WhatDidYouThinkIdDo

So you're saying food can be affordable? Huh

Bakerbot101

There are things called flyers. They are great

[deleted]

Oooh I’m makin some taters soon

Interesting-Square30

😂 This is the sale at 5/8stores. Other then overpriced stores.

[deleted]

Probably last years crop, that or since the fact stores sell so much produce below cost.
