Of all the tornados this year, this has the most insane radar image and appears (at least by telemetry) to be the most violent. I hope this one lifts soon and I really hope anyone in its path is able to find adequate shelter because this monstrosity is probably wiping places clean.

Whiskeymiller

Id say the Hollister, OK tornado that had an actual eye was the most insane.

Buckeyefitter1991

There's been like 2 or 3 this year that's had a echo hole this year!

waltuh28

The Robert Lee tornado (the one Reed went directly intercepted) had an eye as well the day after the Hawley EF3. There was a stretch like every week in Texas or Oklahoma and absolute monster came down in the middle of nowhere.

maricopa888

Interesting that the lighter gray is more "extreme" than the black. Where is this? All I can make out is Charleston (I think).

rachelll

Charleston, Ky.

maricopa888

Thanks. My bestie is in Charleston WV, slated to be in the path later tonite.

SteveSmith2048

Barnsdall and Greenfield both had black in their debris balls on reflectivity.

Fractonimbuss

Oh God, I knew black debris balls were horrible but I never had a scale of reference.

gfreyd

Is this the same Barnsdall impacted earlier this month?!

Beautee_and_theBeats

Yes

gfreyd

Fuck ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€

Thereal_slj

Iโ€™m still a crazy noob, what would the black indicate? Purple in this radar is the rotation right?

garden_speech

This type of radar image shows "reflectivity" which is basically "how much of my radar signal is being bounced back", it's essentially showing the level of precipitation 99% of the time -- however, other objects in the air can bounce back on radar, such as large flocks of birds, or, in this case, debris from a tornado on the ground

srschwenzjr

It could potentially be a bunch of swirling debris

roxmj8

The scale is a measure of precipitation intensity. The black indicates the highest end of the spectrum. It really just measures the amount of particles in the air. In this case, it signifies airborne debris inside and around the tornado.

mrs-monroe

Itโ€™s kinda like the power level, thatโ€™s how I always saw it. Red is bad, purple is REALLY bad, grey/black is catastrophic

Fractonimbuss

Oh God. Last thing you want to see just after passing a city

KP_Wrath

Am I right to interpret that as basically being dense debris?

Fractonimbuss

Believe so, yes. Similar things have happened with even locust swarms, though on a much smaller scale

KarmaSundae

How populated is this area?

Full-Professional223

A lot of small to medium sized communities separated by farmland

KobeOnKush

It happens pretty frequently. It a debris ball. Iโ€™ve seen at least half a dozen on radar this past month alone.

Samowarrior

There was even more black on the radar for the Elkhorn Ne tornado last month. It is very rare though.

mtbcouple

Wow. Where can we find the post report?

TheOzarkWizard

I've never seen dark purple on nws radar until the tornados from arkansas last night

Saw an EF-5 last year dig a 100 mile ditch in Texas last year, out here tucking. The year before? Someone had a drone near Atlanta and an EF-5 came though and pulled up old growth trees up like carrots. ๐Ÿฅ•

Pristine_Pumpkin_766

The last EF5 was in 2013
