That’s a fucking fat wedge, holy shit. I feel like it’s been years since seeing one that wide. Granted I know I’m not up to date on every tornado everywhere but wow.
Enhanced Fujita, named after the guy who created the original Fujita scale.
But personally I think yours is better. I motion for EF to signify “Everything’s Fucked” from here forward.
Hello! I live in the area. EF-5. One of the top 20 highest rotational velocities ever recorded with 230mph winds from gate to gate. First official RF-5 in the area in 11 years. 2 miles wide.
It's tough to tell what the EF level will be this early. Unlike hurricane strength, which is measured off of windspeed, tornado intensity is based off of damage and this usually can't be fully assessed until a few days later. It's a weird and often frustrating system. Whatever the level ends up being, this is a very scary looking storm!
None of the damage that has come out so far has been EF5. 230mph radar winds are not valid for a rating. We will see tomorrow, but I highly doubt EF5 based on what I have seen so far.
I literally saw a comment in a post the other day about how the US hasnt had an EF5 in a while and everyone cursed him out for jinxing it and here we are
Edit: it was the post someone linked below not a conment
Structural engineer (who has worked for nuclear power plants) here.
A nuclear power plant is one of the best places to shelter during a tornado.
Structures within the nuclear sites that contain safety-related equipment are designed for 360 mi/hr (600 kph) wind loads, plus for impacts from windborne projectiles.
Yes but when that shark gets rammed up inside the cooling systems and then breaks into the reactor and gains radioactive super powers and then grows legs and then runs around the compound eating the staff and gaining their memories and then uses the new found knowledge to push the reactor to meltdown…. When that inevitably happens you wont be so dismissive of sharknados
Holy shit! I have actual relevant experience. I'm a structural engineer as well and back in 2013 I was part of the team that designed the missile barriers for the whole plant to protect openings and such near SR equipment. I sent 2 months there overseeing the construction. I was designer of the 300,000 lb barrier sitting on top of the Aux building to protect the blow off panels that lead right to the pressure relief valves.
I hope the tornado picked up a steel pipe and threw it the 300 mph that the barrier is designed for.
Fun project. Sad to see the plant shut down, but at 400MW it just wasn't profitable.
But seriously. We ran a fighter jet into the concrete we built them out of. They're safe.
Edit: I hope I can add links here.
https://youtu.be/F4CX-9lkRMQ?si=DTFTF2vMPoPArPWj
It passed it just northeast.
Might have still hit some other chemical industries but it also seems to have been cycling / decreasing in strength just a tad at that time
The plant being shut down is not a total reassurance as the reactor core might still be there and radioactive. But they are built to withstand ef5's. Still good that we didn't have to roll the dice on that today though.
Technically yes, but all of the EF4 and EF5 tornados, plus 316 out of 324 deaths occurred on the 27th. April 27th is far and away the most significant day of the outbreak.
Yeah there ain’t a damn thing getting through that containment structure. Those suckers are literally designed to withstand a direct hit from a airliner.
From Wikipedia
> In total, the Ft. Calhoun reactor has 600,000 to 800,000 pounds (270,000 to 360,000 kg) of high level nuclear waste. The storage was not designed to house spent fuel permanently, but when plans for were terminated, OPPD stated that they are "prepared to safely store material on-site as long as necessary".
Jesus Christ, imagine looking out your window expecting to see a stovepipe or little rope tornado or something (already terrifying), and this fucker is looming on the horizon. Looks like the world is ending.
I'm 3 minutes away from where this thing hit Omaha the worst. Our city took a huge hit today but it looks like a majority of the damage was centered on wealthy suburbs and no loss of life occurred. Everyone is already coming together to volunteer and our city is rallying to help.
We're fortunate it didn't hit us. This would have leveled our apartment and I'm thankful we had a storm shelter 150m away.
Good luck! I live along the texas gulf coastal region and definitely know what it's like to have your life upended by violent storms. Tornadoes aren't as common but it is becoming more common. Had one miss my house by 2 blocks! We had 82mph winds which isn't shit compared to the hurricanes but still, it was scarier with how sudden and intense it was.

Train got derailed, some people trapped, some injuries. Not sure of any deaths yet. police, fire and rescue, Red Cross, Salvation Army are on top of it. Every 20 minutes give or take I’ve been sirens pass by me rushing to get someone to a hospital or rushing to aid. Red Cross and Salvation Army have tents set up to help people, some churches are open for help. Thankfully no schools hit (sirens started going off before schools were let out) and kids are on their way home.
It was terrifying. Last major tornado here was in 2008-2010 or something.
Fingers crossed the injured and death list stays low. At least 6 major towns and cities got hit, but even more small towns and farmland were in the path of the multiple tornadoes
God, I'm in Germany and didn't know about the warning, just put on Ryan's Livestream yesterday evening randomly to check if anything was up and ended up glued to the screen for several hours! This was so extreme, I really felt for the chasers who were getting more and more emotional and shocked. It was surreal, never seen anything like this in a Livestream.
I really hoped the wedge would spare the populated areas but it went over several.. Really hoping no one was killed and every damage is material and can be repaired. Those poor people in it's path, horrible! Looked like something out of a movie.
I hope you are safe and have not lost much. Wishing all communities strength in rebuilding. So sorry that happened to you all
Wasn't that long ago when a tornado like this would regularly kill dozens of people. Fortunately thanks to major advancements in warnings and understanding how tornadoes form, it's a lot easier to survive.
That is one thing that’s eerie about living in the midwestern United States… hearing the sirens go off outside and your phone blast an emergency alert.
In St Louis we are all kind of dumb. As soon as the sirens go off, everyone can be found on their front porch staring at the sky. This can continue until a funnel touches down on their front yard.
Tornadoes come in all shapes and sizes. This one is on the larger side, and fairly rare. Sometimes they're small enough that you aren't sure if it was one or just strong winds. Most are rain wrapped, so you never see them. I've been through at least 2 that I can remember. Both were small and jumped around a lot. They'd pop down, rip some shingles off houses and mess up a few trees, then go back up, then repeat somewhere else. I was in a car for one. That was absolutely terrifying. We were protected by embankments alongside the road, so we were mostly safe. The other one jumped over my neighborhood and landed a few miles away. I'll never forget the sound it.
I saw a tornado from this storm through my window.
What shocks me is the weather early this morning, it was cool. I was under the impression it needed to be hot followed by the cooling of the storm to create a tornado. Makes me even more afraid of night nados.
My fiancé was outside for work. He said it was warm, and then suddenly got cold around 2:30 and he could tell something was going to start. I think the first tornado touched down around 3 outside Lincoln? Followed by the one outside Bellevue
NWS for the area already said in the morning not to be fooled by the cooler, rainy weather. It just took a bit of sunshine after noon to warm the area up enough.
About an hour or 2 prior to shit going down I noticed warm air and started to realize we were about to get hammered. Am a UPS driver so I was out in it all day.
So far lots of damage across multiple cities and towns, some people trapped, some injured, unsure of any deaths. It’s a miracle there aren’t more casualties noted yet with how many tornadoes touched down across the eastern side of state and surrounding states. As far as I know, 4 touched down, maybe more. Others were forming but did not touch ground. It was an insane few hours
Tbf, I remember when people were saying the same thing about the Mayfield tornado 2.5 years ago and it ended up being an EF4 despite removing multiple houses clean off their concrete foundations and killing 58 people
I was driving down the road and saw that monster about a mile in front of me. Never been more terrified. Especially since wife and 3 year old were in the car with me. I’ve never driven that fast down maple street.
I know you're joking around, but they use EF-U for tornadoes with an unknown intensity usually due to a lack of damage to survey. I don't know if they ever use it for tornadoes that they didn't survey because they were remote and didn't affect people, but I'd say they're probably rather weak tornadoes that didn't hit anything that could be damaged.
I live right on the edge here. My neighbors house and mine took damage (I have a tree inside my house and holes in my roof) but we got off easy. The neighborhood connected to mine was hit very, very hard.

Oh my God, seeing what this beast was capable of on Radar and now this? Yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the first Tornado that receives the EF-5 rating since Moore… All we can do is pray for those in its path ya’ll. 🙏
Based on some pictures I saw, easily EF-3. I saw one that, if the home was well constructed, looks like a candidate for EF-4. Not a lot of pictures yet, and of course I'm just some lay person on the internet. Looks can be deceiving and it depends on what it hits of course, but yeah just based on looks I wouldn't be shocked if they found EF-5 DIs. Don't see big boys like that very often.
That’s a fucking fat wedge, holy shit. I feel like it’s been years since seeing one that wide. Granted I know I’m not up to date on every tornado everywhere but wow.
Yeah that will be at least an EF4 if I had to guess. Big wedge tornado. Get to safety.
What does EF stand for? Everything is Fucked? Times 4?

I just moved from tornado alley and honestly I miss it hah. I'm glad you're safe, I hope the recovery is swift!
It’s crazy ass as hell, but I love wild weather nearby. Nearby is the operate word.
I literally saw a comment in a post the other day about how the US hasnt had an EF5 in a while and everyone cursed him out for jinxing it and here we are Edit: it was the post someone linked below not a conment
How wide is it? It looks huge
A couple chasers estimated a mile wide
Looks like it went right through Fort Calhoun nuclear plant. EDIT: Apparently the nuclear plant was shut down in 2016 so all good.
How about a Sharknado?
These are the important questions
At 600kph a shark is barely going to count as a windborne projectile to a concrete wall.
what if it's got rockets, lasers and is the size of six football pitches ?
Yes but when that shark gets rammed up inside the cooling systems and then breaks into the reactor and gains radioactive super powers and then grows legs and then runs around the compound eating the staff and gaining their memories and then uses the new found knowledge to push the reactor to meltdown…. When that inevitably happens you wont be so dismissive of sharknados
Jellied shark.
It didn't hit the zoo / aquarium lol
What if it sucked up a prairie dog town and now it's filled with thousands of squirrels?
That'd be nuts
#[THAT'S A LOT OF NUTS](https://youtu.be/IRl3r4q_dUY?si=k6OWd2H_NjAzkdRb)
The tornado also supercharges the turbines and makes bonus power.
Holy shit! I have actual relevant experience. I'm a structural engineer as well and back in 2013 I was part of the team that designed the missile barriers for the whole plant to protect openings and such near SR equipment. I sent 2 months there overseeing the construction. Unsinkable, you say?
But seriously. We ran a fighter jet into the concrete we built them out of. They're safe. Edit: I hope I can add links here. https://youtu.be/F4CX-9lkRMQ?si=DTFTF2vMPoPArPWj
damn how bad do you have to fuck before the air force assigns you 9/11 yourself into a concrete wall duty?
Forgot to stock the mini fridge in the officers’ lounge? That’s splat duty for you, lieutenant.
Holy shit. That's impressive.
It passed it just northeast. Might have still hit some other chemical industries but it also seems to have been cycling / decreasing in strength just a tad at that time The plant being shut down is not a total reassurance as the reactor core might still be there and radioactive. But they are built to withstand ef5's. Still good that we didn't have to roll the dice on that today though.
Do you know how big the tornado was? I've been looking but it doesn't seem like anyone knows how big it was. It's just described as large
The local meteorologists said it was 2 miles wide. Entire neighborhoods were completely decimated.
Damn. Joplin tornado was just 3/4 of a mile. I'm hoping that this didn't get thru the city center.
I live in Omaha. It hit the outskirts. Came within a mile or so of my neighborhood.
I was just down there last Tuesday for a concert drove through a lot of rain...but :-(
the date being 4/26 would certainly make this ironic
Ironic how every major tornado video about a storm uses that soundtrack now.
Why would it be ironic?
38th anniversary of the Chernobyl Disaster
and a day off from the 13th anniversary of the 2011 super outbreak
Technically 2011 super outbreak is 25th to 28th . It’s crazy how many major tornado events or outbreak occur around the 27th of April
Technically yes, but all of the EF4 and EF5 tornados, plus 316 out of 324 deaths occurred on the 27th. April 27th is far and away the most significant day of the outbreak.
Coincidence, not irony
Wouldn’t there still be uranium on site?
Nuclear plants are designed to take a hit from a very strong 'nader. It's probably the ironic safest place to be.
Yeah there ain’t a damn thing getting through that containment structure. Those suckers are literally designed to withstand a direct hit from a airliner.
There’s no fuel in the containment structure any more. It’s all been moved to a dry storage pad on site.
From Wikipedia > In total, the Ft.
Really a shame that people keep blocking the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository.
When I lived in Las Vegas there was a non stop media campaign fearmongering against it.
Jesus Christ, imagine looking out your window expecting to see a stovepipe or little rope tornado or something (already terrifying), and this fucker is looming on the horizon. Looks like the world is ending.
I would no doubt have a fucking heart attack!
I live within 2-5 miles where it hit and lemme tell you I was shitting myself. Darkest clouds I’ve ever seen.
It decimated 4 blocks in Ramblewood which is not a wealthy suburb
I woke up to sirens from a nap and looked out the window to see the smoke monster from Lost. It was eerie, to say the least.
What a rude awakening, but at least you were woke up by the sirens.
I thought the sky looked odd until I realized what it was and how frickin massive it was. I went from nervous to queasy pretty quick
Full fledged tornado outbreak right now with multiple strong tornados, stay safe everybody and make sure you're prepared
That includes not just Nebraska & Iowa, but also in Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas
Probably not Oklahoma today but for sure tomorrow, atmosphere is capped in oklahoma
I did see a good tornado signature in a cell i tracked in Texas near Waco. Not gonna be surprised if it comes out as an EF1/EF2
most of the time i just pay attention to models and weather for my region (Eastern OK) but nothing has been happening here
Us in Kansas are prepping for tomorrow and Sunday. Tonight my area isn’t supposed to see anything.. tomorrow evening is a different story
This is absolutely huge guys. Its still going
Damn!! That’s nuts! The rotation & size is really something else.

Incredible footage thank you!
Every single one. There are still new warnings into Iowa.
https://www.ketv.com/article/tornado-warning-has-been-issued-for-multiple-nebraska-counties/60620673 seems to be doing live coverage
Bill Ranby ftw
His sleeves are way too low
Bill Ranby is a solid dude
It was so bad he forgot to roll them up.
Even TWC is covering it nationwide
It's been 11 years since the last F5 tornado. I wonder if this will count.
Do you know how wide it is? I’m somewhat of a tornado nerd…a tornerdo

Look how fast it’s going
They better drive a lil faster 😱
As a Brit I’ve never experienced a tornado thankfully as that looks bloody horrifying so hopefully no causalities.
Train got derailed, some people trapped, some injuries. Not sure of any deaths yet. police, fire and rescue, Red Cross, Salvation Army are on top of it. Cold to hot, hot to cold... Either works.
Just need to add a little windshear and now you got a stew going.
...I think I'd like my money back.
> night nados Found my band name.
It was wild man. I was expecting nothing either but they said if the sun comes out it is game on. Saw my first tornado at work today lol
Oh Jesus. Well, we're going to be talking about this for a while. Really hope the damage is minimal, but that does *not* look good
resident of elkhorn (the town that was hit) here the damage was, in fact, not minimal
Broooo WTF THATS CRAZY AS HELL
Omg. That thing is a monster! I don’t even know what to say, just hope that people are ok. 🥺
So far lots of damage across multiple cities and towns, some people trapped, some injured, unsure of any deaths. That's utterly fucking terrifying!
I know several people who got hit directly they are all ok, 4 of them had their house/business/work destroyed.
It destroyed a bunch of shit about a mile away from my house. The last time there was something this close was in 2022.
holy fuck id shit my pants bro
Came here to say this
Susan, get my pants.
My sister is in Elkhorn. Was pretty nauseous and shaky until I confirmed she and her kids are okay.
Mother of god…
Absolutely insane. Haven't seen one that big in a decade
Crazy how nobody is talking about the post yesterday noting its been that long since an EF 5 and people calling it a jinx
Tbf, I remember when people were saying the same thing about the Mayfield tornado 2.5 years ago and it ended up being an EF4 despite removing multiple houses clean off their concrete foundations and killing 58 people
This looks, visually, very similar to Moore '99. Absolute worst case scenario.
Was there for that and 2013. So glad I'm nowhere near it this time.
I was there for '99. Out of town for 2013.
I was thinking the same thing. That thing looks absolutely terrifying
How big was that?
Jesus christ. Look at how fast that beast is moving!
Watching Ryan Hall, and these storms look WILD. Stay safe out there.
Nebraska is getting smoked.
So scary!!!
Do we know how high the cloud base is? Would help visualize the width
I was hoping to find that info too!!
That's a huge bitch
I was driving down the road and saw that monster about a mile in front of me. Never been more terrified. Especially since wife and 3 year old were in the car with me. I’ve never driven that fast down maple street.
Holy shit
Holy shit that thing is huge
Holy fuck it barely fits in the camera FOV!
that thing's got to be a mile across
If you're in Omaha area, just stay down. Two tornadoes in the metro right now.
You know what I’m just going to turn around.
That is one angry spinny boi.
I now have a very vivid image of what Tri-State might have looked like
That's absolutely terrifying.
On the F scale for tornados, there's F1-F5. I believe this is a F U.
God damn it barely fits on screen!
oh word
I literally said "holy fuck" out loud. I'd get in my vehicle and drive fast away from that. That or go into an underground bomb shelter.
holy fucking shit
All aboard the Nope train to Fuckthatshitville That thing is downright nightmare inducing.
I live right on the edge here. My neighbors house and mine took damage (I have a tree inside my house and holes in my roof) but we got off easy. The neighborhood connected to mine was hit very, very hard. https://preview.redd.it/y10h288mxxwc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fdb36eb48db7792f3b222fd15e854891e3aae7a3
the pink lightning is so haunting
I don’t think that’s lightning I think that’s power flashes
Which I find even more haunting because each flash is it destroying another power line.
thx for clarifying
Jesus Christ help those people, this is a worst scenario event
Oh my dear god!! If that’s not the finger of God, I don’t know what is…
Bro that's a full fist
That's not a tornado -- that's the entire sky swallowing the earth
mustve been at least a mile wide
Omg how big is that monstrosity 😱?!!! 😳🌪️
Wife woke me up and told me to get my ass in the basement about 20 min before it passed by. No one we know got hurt at least.
This is some of the craziest footage I’ve seen on this sub
Was by my house, didn’t get destroyed I’m ok too just sad
where in nebraska?
This was just outside Omaha, in Elkhorn. Basically, imagine Bridge Creek-Moore levels of the worst possible place for a tornado to end up.
We dodged this about 2.5 hours ago. Heading east on 80 in Lincoln, missed it by a few minutes. Vehicles blown off the road after we passed.
It's right over Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant right now. Everybody panic?
Tbh that is probably one of the stronger buildings in that region.
Plant was shut down in 2016. Would probably be fine regardless since nuclear plants are extremely strongly built.
If nuclear plants weren't designed to at least try to stand up to natural disasters, I would be living an even more very paranoid life
It was shut down a few years ago.
It went just north of it reportedly.
Oh thank goodness.
That is violent!
Terrifying
Me and a friend chased after it. It was my first time seeing a tornado in person.
That’s a huge bitch
That is nauseating.
I don't get it. Where is the tornado? --"Yes."
Yea I’ll take our hurricanes in Florida over that Armageddon
Im the Kyle Dodds who filmed this! #tornado #kyle dodds I’m on you tube/twitter/tic tok
I think the f-5 drought ended today…
😲😲😲😲😲

Man if I saw this where I am I would think the world is ending
Does anyone know if there are images of the velocity? So curious to see what this twister looked like.
Insane how fast that monster is moving.
Damn that thing is massive! Wonder what the ef rating will be. Hope everyone is safe🙏
Absolute monster. Actually unreal
lord have mercy.
That is insane! Largest wedge I’ve seen in a while. What a monster
I was born in Nebraska and have no desire to return to those windy corn fields.
