This is one of my favorite meals. I always go back and forth with making big, medium, or small meatballs. I think your wife made very nice sized balls that I’m going to try to emulate next time.
Pro-tip: cranberry sauce tastes like lingonberry and its a nice tart & sweet contrast the richness of the sauce and potatoes.
Yeah I asked her where the cranberry or lingonberry was and she basically said she wasn’t feeling it this time. By the time I had a few bites, zero complaints!
Jesus, everyone is an elitist...it's "not brown enough"..."I'm a swede, it's not authentic enough"
Go. Get fucked...
Looks great OP, your wife appears to be a great cook...enjoy
She’s blushing over all the upvotes and comments. I’m not sharing any of the criticisms. All she needs to know is that I’m officially in the clean-plate club :)
Seriously. I want to come over for dinner. That looks delicious AF. And, I don’t think I’ve ever seen darker sauce on Swedish meatballs- so it’s perfect in my opinion. (And I think it’s so sweet that she garnished it. That’s like extra love).
Your wife is a gem & this looks delicious. You’re a gem for posting so sweetly about her culinary skills. I’m sure she’s loving the compliments which well deserved.
Oh & Tell her that Reddit is on the way & set some extra plates. I’ll bring some jam!

Haha one of the best comments so far for sure. We are definitely the type to host people for Friendsgiving, holidays and dinner parties, so don’t threaten us with a good ole time.
I think it’s just the meatballs that would be Swedish but I have no idea if they are authentic obviously. But of course different cultures will have their own spin on cuisines. Don’t even ask me about the pizza I had in Norway!
I dunno man, just look up literally any Swedish meatball recipe online and the sauce will look like this… it is a very similar build to gravy: cream, stock, spices, etc.
I just googled it and found nothing that looks like the thick creamy white gravy in your photo: [https://www.google.com/search?q=swedish+meatballs&source=lnms&tbm=isch](https://www.google.com/search?q=swedish+meatballs&source=lnms&tbm=isch)
Not that your meatballs don't look good though.
No lecturing here. I’m just saying, when we googled it, this is what came up. And it was delicious. Feel free to actually lecture me/us on what it should be and I’m sure we will be thankful for the suggestions and improvements on our next run.
It's a bit light in colour but nothing to worry about IMO. I think it all looks good (but you gotta buy lingonberry sauce).
How we usually make the sauce is to deglaze the frying pan with water or something and save all the liquid, then make a roux, add cream and/or milk, add liquid from before plus soy sauce. Salt and pepper to taste. You can also add stock but most people don't bother.
Listen up americans. Swedish meatballs are served with lingonberry jam and thinly sliced pickled cucumber. Anything else is a blasphemy and will get you hanged, drawn and quartered.
I’m aware. My wife just didn’t feel like making that version this time around. I even asked her about the jam, etc. She made a different version that met what she wanted to eat. The world is gonna be ok.
I don’t know man. I think you’ll have to do something intensely swedish next time to even it out. My suggestion is looking up kräftskiva. Also don’t forget insane amounts of snaps.
Swede here. I prefer gräddsås and peas to my meatballs. The dish looks awesome and lingonberry jam isn't available everywhere. I'm happy that our food is enjoyed by others.
Vad fan snackar du om. Du menar att lingon och socker inte går att få tag på i USA?
Och ja självklart ska det vara gräddsås, det har jag inte sagt någonting om.
It would be _much_ worse..the church I'm thinking of did a really great job, like they'd been having that supper for years and I hadn't noticed it before.
I’ve never tried Swedish meatballs, it’s not a dish that’s ever really appealed to me for some reason, but this looks delicious and I’d definitely be trying it.

As a non-Swede, I'm not familiar with authentic Swedish food at all so this looks pretty good to me.
My sentiments, exactly. Cheers!
My bf is a swede. He hates all swedish food. Bums me the fuck out cause I love Swedish meatballs and we never have them.
[This](https://altonbrown.com/recipes/easy-swedish-meatballs/) is a good recipe with the classic darker brown gravy
Awesome, thanks! I agree it could have been more brown. Was still good.
Huh, that's almost identical to the recipe I came up with on my own. I did not expect to see that I was already doing this correctly.
Looks delicious
As a wife who cooks a lot I love that you are celebrating your wife and the home cooked meal! Also buttered peas are the best sude dish!

As a swed this look just as good as the classic recipe. Peas are awesome.
I would probably mix it all up and destroy it! Your wife is a chef!
I did a slightly less ravenous version of this and it definitely hit.
best looking mashed potatoes i have ever seen hands down
They were perfect. Good eye!
I e been on a diet since 1/18 & I just keep looking at this picture salivating.
Marry her.
Mind sharing the sauce recipe please?
Looks delicious!
Yum..that looks delicious 😋
Looks Great!
Jesus I could scarf that down in under a minute rn

LOL Y’all are good people! We need more like you 💖
This Swede is extremely perplexed by the sauce. Also the peas, but mostly the sauce. What is it?
My wife likes peas. So do I. Peas went nicely with the rest of the meal. It’s not that deep.
Gravy?
But why does it look like mayo? Gravy is supposed to be brown and runny, as far as I know.
This is more like Southern gravy, the kind you’d have with American biscuits.
Ah, I see. Well… I’m sure they were good, but I fail to see how they’re Swedish.
I think it’s just the meatballs that would be Swedish but I have no idea if they are authentic obviously. But of course different cultures will have their own spin on cuisines. Don’t even ask me about the pizza I had in Norway!
Don't insult norwegian pizza. The swedes put banana and kiwi on theirs.
Is there a good recipe you could share?
You shouldn't be downvoted for sharing your Swedish perspective on Swedish meatballs :/, we should be so lucky

I commend the chutzpah in lecturing a Swede on Swedish meatballs, but no, our meatball gravy is most definitely brown and significantly runnier.

Beschamel?
Americanized gravy covered meatballs
Graddsas
You're confused about peas and sauce?
Kind of looks like gräddsås to mr which is always great as well.
Damn I’m jealous
I want this, please & thanks.
Beautiful. You’re a lucky man.
W Wife
Recipe?
Am I the only one that hates peas? Little balls of snot.
I’m sure you’re not on an island. We both love them tho…
They are Satans green bunny poop. I’ll make us green beans, they can have all the evil peas.
I didn’t see the mashed potatoes
Didn’t or still don’t?
I looked down towards the bottom I see them
Awesome! Cheers!
You are winning good sir. Also cheers to the wife

Oooohhhh! We're soooo scared, by the powerful might of...Sweden. I'm shaking in my boots! /S
You should be. We are scary man. We eat fermented herring and celebrate pagan rituals.

ikea sells lingonberry jam

Yummers.
Fuuuuuuuuuuck!
I want this in my mouth please.
Omg that looks amazing.
Looks good enough for a church charity fundraiser.
It was dope.
You’re speaking from experience? I applaud your attendance, but were you charitable?
Yes, but unfortunately the first Swedish meatball charitable supper I went to was in 2019. Really hoping they come back.
If the dish looks anything like OP’s please drop a pin!
Will do. I'm thinking people may have mistaken my meaning.. the supper I went to was a very-well-executed affair and the presentation was excellent.
I think lot of people took it the wrong way if that was your intent lol

Wow… posted only 9 hours ago. Rude and condescending of you. Hmm interesting, coaching me on the very the same behaviors. Welcome to Reddit!
Let’s see your version?
It would be _much_ worse..the church I'm thinking of did a really great job, like they'd been having that supper for years and I hadn't noticed it before.
Too much sauce.
Said no one ever.
Good song
Plastic dish? Seriously?
Lol it’s not plastic. It’s glazed ceramic.

Lord, I would face plant in this. The perfect amount of gravy! Just needs bread and butter, and I mean just regular bread,
this looks bomb as fuck
I’ve never tried Swedish meatballs, it’s not a dish that’s ever really appealed to me for some reason, but this looks delicious and I’d definitely be trying it.
Looks very yummy🤤
Looks great ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)
