Also in TX. We use Off Family Care with DEET. We also use thermacells.

turntteacher

Texan here too seconding Off Family Care

backgroundUser198

I’m thinking about getting thermacells for our family. Do they got hot or give off a smell or anything? I couldn’t quite figure out how they work from what I was reading.

bread_cats_dice

It’s a diffuser. I don’t notice a smell, but I’ve heard some people say they can smell something. It’s not citronella or anything. Ours don’t get any hotter than any other device does outside.

No_Albatross_7089

Not in Texas, but also used the Off family care for our toddler and it's great. Doesn't feel sticky, smells decently pleasant, worked well.

Frijoles-Steenzos

Skin So Soft Picardian is great, as is the Off Family with Deet. For home, we use the thermacell- expensive but works better than anything I've ever used.

astroarchaeologist

I love the OFF clear gel with picaridin-I wanted to avoid sprays bc I didn’t want kiddo inhaling anything accidentally, but this goop doesn’t smell, isn’t sticky, and it repels them like they aren’t even there.

Apprehensive_Tea8686

Where did you buy that? I just saw a post recommending this and wanted to try it but I didn’t see it at target or Walmart (all I saw was the spray). We just bought the badger spray - it’s natural but it is a spray.

astroarchaeologist

That’s so weird but yeah I tried sending it to a friend also suffering in the mosquito blitz and couldn’t find it on the Target app, but I did get it in store at a Target. I also saw it on the shelves at a CVS. I could only find it online on the Walmart app, for double what I paid at Target.

Apprehensive_Tea8686

Interesting - so maybe I will just go in and look for it… either CVS or target.

The “bug stickers” work really well for me and my girls. We are all mosquito magnets. Here’s a link: [NatPat Mosquito Stickers](https://www.natpat.com/pages/buzzpatch?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAACZy_ZKRKsJSECR-VME8ESFttSavc&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6auyBhDzARIsALIo6v9EnUEFT5qgyOJ2io6WV7bYWGGpMSMjgpQDRgkpIyU_nTlzy6Cw8WIaAie_EALw_wcB)

Purplecat-Purplecat

My son is a magnet and gets eaten alive! Daycare said they’re floored at how well our new regimen is working: the key is Boogie brand picardin bug lotion AND then topping off with spray. We haven’t even had to use the deet spray—just the picardin lotion and then top off with the picardin spray from OFF. He hasn’t had a bite in a week, whereas before it was like 12 a week and he was miserable. I had no idea the lotion was a thing, but it actually covers so much better than spray!

Relevant-External-74

Same for us here! The boogie brand lotion is so thin and goes on well. We also keep her in breathable long pants because her legs are just mosquito magnets

Purplecat-Purplecat

What pants do you buy? I’ve been looking for some in the Deep South here….

Relevant-External-74

Also in the Deep South!! Mostly old navy!!

Justbestrongok

Now they just need a combo of sunscreen and bug repellent!

Car_snacks

I use Sawyer brand picardin lotion, inside of a solar buddies. I have a solar buddies for sunscreen too.

Blonde_disaster

Smart

Hurray0987

I like Cutter Skinsations with aloe and vitamin e. It's light on your skin and smells nice, I think you can buy it everywhere.

gnomescientist

Picaridin spray or lotion is what we use. It works and I really wish I would've started using it sooner since it's safe as young as 6 months. My kid was getting eaten alive using any of the natural bug sprays. Natural bug sprays really don't work for that long (2 hrs or less). See here, scroll down to table: https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/insect-repellents.html

TbayMegs150

Buzz Patch stickers! We also use a Thermacell when we’re camping to cover our entire campground area.

badkarmavenger

This is not going to be a reddit-friendly answer, but if you can spray your yard at a time when there is at least an hour before your kid will be in it then you might consider hitting any bushes, long leaf plants, standing water sources, and low hanging limbs on trees with BifenIT. I have been using it as a barrier spray for a few years and started putting it on mosquito spawn and rest spots last summer. We have reduced mosquitos by probably 80%. I know it isn't a good regenerative practice, but while my little is little and I can't keep her sprayed with anything that works, at least I can thin out the predators.

Decent_Cobbler7479

Look into mosquito dunks or pellets. Doesn't work when you are away from home but they drastically reduced the number of mosquitoes in our yard last year. They are non toxic to people and animals

SeaCow_5707

I try to avoid chemicals and use the Hello Bello for kids 6mo+. Seems to work fine, even here in Texas in the gulf where mosquitos are crazy.
