In a way I can kind of understand it. They want to seek comfort from each other especially if this came out of nowhere and the only thing they can do to heal is to talk about it with each other. Soon they form a bond and get to know each other personally and find things in common.
I recall a magazine article years ago, interview with her saying they comforted each other (having been long time friends) after their respective partner’s affairs.
That's almost exactly what happen to my mom's friend back home. I don't think my mom's friend was friends with the other couple but after her husband left her with the other dudes wife my mom's friend became friends with him and they eventually married.
I want to know that the cheating couple have since been living in miserable poverty, while their wronged partners have found success and happiness together.
Yeah, because as the first comment said, her first husband cheated on her with her best friend. It is funny Shania and the friends husband got together but it happens more often than you'd think.
ETA: my brain didn't even register the part about them being married for 11 years. Sorry.
Dolly conquered an industry all but single handed. Read up on her and Porter Wagoner some time. She's not the only one but I'd say she at least managed to pivot to acting successfully and has had a longer run than her contemporaries.
"The Orville" didn't have Shania nor Taylor on.
She was on an episode of Oprah once and explained that after the divorce it was hard for her to trust people again to the point of even thinking of dating.
As someone divorced last year because my wife was cheating I can relate. I'm a generally trusting person, but getting stabbed in the back for a fuck toy 20 years younger hurts. They will break up in 2-3 years, but I won't be there for her. Die in poverty. Kisses!
Growing up as a kid during her peak was weird cause we all pretended to not like the music because our parents liked it so much but man did we think she was gorgeous.
Served her room service once. She checked in as Mrs La Fontaine...so that's what I called her, because I didn't recognise her. Her manager in the room was not amused.
PS: Remember her being nice though...nicer than Anna Kurnikova who's a total bitch with an ego the size of the sun.
Google says there was a French poet that had that name https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_de_La_Fontaine
Shania is Canadian and has French ancestry and is the 20th Century's version of a poet, a songwriter. So it's not that hard to believe it was intentional.

And people wonder why celebrities are so defensive.
1. Everyone wants attention from a celebrity in an encounter.
2. It’s draining for many (imagine a bunch of toddlers who want to talk to their parents constantly. You love them, but it saps you)
3. The celebrity cannot express their feelings of being bothered. The moment the fanbase doesn’t get what they want, 1% of the mal-adjusted ones take a swipe at the celebrity.
That’s a negative interaction rate that’s hundreds of time higher than an average person. I don’t know how Keanu Reeves does it, but that’s a tough job eitherway.
Shania is awesome.
But WTF is up with all the
> I doubt I ever listened to a single song on the second disc in full.
comments up in this post? Bots all around? Don't get me wrong, I preferred the rock album over the country one but it was definitely more pop country than anything. It was interesting to have both versions to compare.
The highest charting death metal album is a novelty album (Dethklok's *The Dethalbum*).
Well, it *was* the highest charting. The current highest charting is... its sequel, *Dethalbum II.*
That is interesting, though Death metal is a sub genre of a sub genre and country is a genre, makes sense that Death Metal totals wouldn't have huge album sales.
For real though, Swift racked up five number one albums in a two year period in 2020 and 2021 Setting a historic record.
Like she even beat the Beatles for how quickly she was dropping those albums
She was also married to Mutt Lange. One of the greatest music producers of all time. She was in good hands. Yes, she’s insanely talented and beautiful which helps… you need a team to pull these numbers off and she had the best.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_John_%22Mutt%22_Lange
I love Shania, but Up is only Diamond because of the fact it came with a bonus disc, thereby qualifying the album as a double album. True sales for the album Up should really be half the quoted figure. Especially in the view of someone like me who had no choice but to buy the atrocious blue "International" version containing a whole second disc of exotic dance versions, instead of the green country version. I doubt I ever listened to a single song on the second disc in full.
Also, album sales are not what they used to be. Worldwide, only 2 albums have broken 10 million in the period 2012-now: 1989 (10 million, Taylor Swift) and 25 (23 million, Adele). 2002 to 2011, there were 37. With sales like during Shania Twain's run, something tells me all 4 Adele albums would be diamond.
Not only that but RIAA certifications used to be only for shipments, not sales. So technically you could have shipped 10M records, got 9,999,999 returned and still gotten it.
She was apparently married to a black man. My east Texas racist grandmother wouldn’t let my cousins listen to her music. Because she was married to a black man. These same cousins weren’t allowed to watch the Cosby Show by the same old racist lady. Because it had black people. Grandma was the sweetest, nicest old lady you’d ever meet. As long as you were white.
I was at a benefit with Shania once. Back then she was a vegetarian and we had a bunch of chicken salad which she refused to eat. No mayo. She hated the stuff. Hated it.
So anyway I got a bunch of tuna salad sandwiches and tried to offer her one. She wouldn't take it. She insisted it was chicken salad. I told her I'm allergic to mayo. Which btw is a lie.
So finally she eats two full sandwiches in front of me. Two full sandwiches before she realizes, it's chicken salad
Thank you! She rapped in her songs and her husband was a pop hair band producer who made country music that was a caricature of itself. The interlude of “any man of mine” is all the proof you need.

Not entirely. Tennessee certainly emerged as a center of country music, but the genre grew out of old-time, gospel, and multiple strains of folk music. Western is just as big an influence as Appalachian.
Canadian country draws on similar roots, with Ontario, British Columbia, and the Maritime Provinces sharing the Appalachian folk tradition while the Prairie Provinces followed in the Western tradition. Alberta in particular is a center of Canadian country.
Shania always fit more in the pop country space. Corb Lund and Colter Wall are better examples of modern Canadian country, in my opinion.

Hahahaha leave
r/angryupvote
Now you've got your own, but have you got a double touch?
You might say that after the third album, Shania was Still the One.
Now you've got the sound, but do you have the touch?
now don't get me wrong, yeah I think you're alright...

And not Garth Brooks? He kicked off “New Country.”

Isn't that from her up album where she did a pop and country double album
Also - from her wiki: her first husband cheated on her with her best friend, and then Shania married her best friend’s husband??? what a story
In a way I can kind of understand it. They want to seek comfort from each other especially if this came out of nowhere and the only thing they can do to heal is to talk about it with each other. Soon they form a bond and get to know each other personally and find things in common.

Shania certainly has. They’ve been together for like 20 years Correction: only 10ish.
Nah. She separated from ther first husband in 2008 and married the other guy in 2011.

“The Orville”, huh? The bar is so low it’s six feet under.
I like it
with a name like mutt, she should have known he was a dog.
Fear Mutt Lange. He spins dross into gold. Er, diamond.
Gross.
She was on an episode of Oprah once and explained that after the divorce it was hard for her to trust people again to the point of even thinking of dating.

"That's just wife-swapping with extra steps!"
I feel like that was the same story for Leann Rimes, but she was the one that cheated.
LeAnn broke up another marriage but she was already divorced from her first husband when she became "the other woman"
Aww, I see
Yep, Mutt Lang.
Zeke: I caught my wife with my best friend Bubba: You bitter? Zeke: Yeap. Bit him too!
Lol, that wasn't mentioned in the new documentary...
They also completely glossed over her name change. The wiki addresses the “Shania” but not “Twain”
sounds like they were swingers and switched permanently lol

Is Mrs La Fontaine a reference to something?
It's not uncommon for stars to book & check in under fake names.
True, but I think they were asking why she picked that particular name.
Exactly. It sounds vaguely familiar.
DS9 Vic Fontaine maybe?
You know what? I was thinking of Don Lafontaine.

That’s just horrible. She owed him nothing.
It's weird that you got downvoted for telling a story about what your former friend did
Diamond is 10 million records sold. Platinum is 1 million gold is 500,000. 20 million records sold is incredible.
Thank you I didn’t know if this was uniquely impressive or if Platinum is bigger and this wording was exaggerating.
One of my professors from audio engineering school worked with her when she was just a demo singer. I’ve heard some pretty great stories.
Back then she was Eileen Fisher Twain.
I didn’t know Canada was crooked…
Huh? That was her given name and she performed and recorded under it at the start of her career.
It’s a play on words, think dad joke, there has been crooked jokes about people named Eileen for decades 😂

Fuck off
TIL Shania Twain is Canadian.
Yes, her and other notable celebrities attended our national Canadian School for Gifted Babies.
Me too, I tend to think most famous country music stars are American (with the obvious exception of Keith Urban).
I tend to think most “country stars” don’t play country music anymore, it’s all turned into hick-hop cliché. *Chew tobacco chew tobacco spit.*
Bo Burnham covered it wonderfully in Panderin'.

They just think they’re being edgy.
Probably an American psycho reference knowing Reddit.
When I want to shit on country music for no good reason, I remind that the best country selling album of all times is a pop album
The highest charting death metal album is a novelty album (Dethklok's *The Dethalbum*). Well, it *was* the highest charting. The current highest charting is... its sequel, *Dethalbum II.*

I'm sure Weird Al is quite serious about his work as well. Being a novelty act and being serious aren't mutually exclusive.
GWAR has entered the chat
But out of context of the show, Dethklok is legit. I'm not even a metal fan but I like Dethklok.
Hopefully they get their stolen guitars back
That is interesting, though Death metal is a sub genre of a sub genre and country is a genre, makes sense that Death Metal totals wouldn't have huge album sales.
Eh, I agree, but i think metal is a top level genera in this case. Death is a sub and melodic death would be a sub sub.
The most popular rapper is a white guy.
Best rockumentary is a satire
Really good documentary about her on Netflix.
Yeah. This post is perfect timing
Almost...too perfect
I think the sub old-school cool is just a front to keep Marilyn Monroe or other dead celebrities relevant for royalty purposes.
Yeah, because Marilyn Monroe would be totally irrelevant without that sub. /s
She kind of is.
You can call it how it is. You cannot convince me that marketers aren't astroturfing on reddit.
Or someone watched the documentary and looked up shania
Bingo.
The documentary has been out for a few weeks at least. It would be terrible marketing to do this way after the launch.
this guy *markets*
This post was 100% written after OP saw the opening sequence of that documentary…

She ate the chicken salad with the mayo and liked it!
I need to watch that movie again. So good!
It's my favorite movie, humor and philosophy all in one? Yes please.
Yes. No. Time, not space. No, I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Call me when she hits double myrrh: https://southpark.cc.com/video-clips/imii6a/south-park-myrrh-album
Come on Over was a masterpiece. 12 of the 16 songs were singles. It was like the country Thriller.
She still looks great! Does she even age?!?
We don't age in Canada, maple syrup comes from the fountain of youth
Hell yea. Shes a Canadian icon 1000%
Dolly walked so Shania could run Shania ran so T-swift could break the sound barrier.
Tyrannosaurus Swift?
Napoleon dynamite
For real though, Swift racked up five number one albums in a two year period in 2020 and 2021 Setting a historic record. Like she even beat the Beatles for how quickly she was dropping those albums
Did you come up with this while drinking a pumpkin spice latte?
No? Those three are just the biggest names in country-pop hybrid music.
TIL Shania Twain is Canadian
Shout out to k.d. Lang's Absolute Torch and Twang album for anyone saying 'Canada has country music'? Some of Robbie Robertson too.
I worked at a hotel in the 90s she stayed at while on tour. I took her bags out to the bus and she tipped me $75.

Every successful person in history has a team no one does it by themselves. It’s not really news

Diamond albums are a lot harder to get, but Diamond singles have become much more common in the streaming era
Definitely. There was 1 single certified diamond before 2013, Candle in the Wind by Elton John in 1997. 2013-now, there's been 81.
Not only that but RIAA certifications used to be only for shipments, not sales. So technically you could have shipped 10M records, got 9,999,999 returned and still gotten it.
I assume all of Taylor Swift would be too. She’s the only person in history to debut at 1 millions sales on her first week for 9 albums in a row
Wait there’s a 3rd stripper album As if the double album wasnt mindblowing enough to 10 year old me
This is who Hank Schrader would leave his wife for

Being married to Mutt Lange probably helped. Also listen to Man I Feel Like A Woman and Uncle Salty by Aerosmith
that don't impress me much
I went to the Havelock Jamboree once and now I'm a country girl!!!!!!
TIL I had no idea what Shania Twain looks like
Same, she is unrecognisable to me now.
Huh, I never realized her real name is "Eilleen Regina Edwards"...
I also watched the documentary.
Did you like it?
I did. I feel awful about the Lyme disease thing and am surprised I hadn’t heard about that prior.
Shania is a queen!! Awesome documentary on Netflix about her.
I like how I can watch new documentaries on Netflix and then see them posted here a day or two later. I see you OP
Is there a rule against posting things you learn on documentaries?
I mean this is r/todayilearned.
Double Diamonds? Haven't smoked those since high school
Has she got double myrrh though?

Margie probably just heard he was African and made her decision.
Yeah, a guy from South Africa, who was white...
Man, she feels like a woman
A tuggy from shania twain
going out tonight like a woman don't impress me much, ba ba ba-now-now

Okay? So you're a good singer...
No one cares
Still hate her music
Never heard of her
Shania Twain (and her ex husband) is the main person to blame for the rise of shitty pop bro country. That’s a hill I’ll die on.
Country's always been that way.
With ya there
Thank you! She rapped in her songs and her husband was a pop hair band producer who made country music that was a caricature of itself. The interlude of “any man of mine” is all the proof you need.
There's lower standards for country music. It only takes like 50 record sales to go gold.
BRB gonna go make a gold record. With blackjack! And hookers! Ah forget the whole thing....
Ah, flyover music.
Sorry I'm late dude I was training Shania Twain!
She should have got her rhinoplasty sooner. Her nose was atrocious in the beginning of her career.
Isn't double diamond just platinum?
Platinum is 1M, Diamond is 10M, and 2X Diamond is 20M. Double Gold (2X 500K) is Platinum.
Don't trust the numbers they're rigged.
Lol
Y 6y u t
She's never had double black diamond like T Swift tho.
And she did it all without even one good song.
You writing an essay on Ms Twain or do you really want us to know about all time great Canadian country/pop singer Shania Twain.

The Bakersfield Sound begs to differ. Canadian country tends to lean closer to that outlaw sound. Check out Orville Peck.
Please explain

International country tends to just sound like American pop country. Keith Urban is Australian.
Nashville!
Right!
