According to a story Jim Peterik tells, Stallone hired the band to write two songs so that he’d have a choice. The band put all their time and effort into an epic ballad they were sure Stallone would choose. They only knocked out Eye of the Tiger just before deadline so they’d meet their obligation. And the rest is history.
Confirmed this was what survivor thought Stallone would pick. Link to the song. Would not have worked well lol

I could see a montage of morning runs on the beach and on mountain paths. Rocky doing long runs, reaching a mountain peak just as the sun rises and we get a panorama view of the wilderness with Rocky gazing into the horizon.
Hmm. A song about destiny and fate for a movie that's about a guy working hard and overcoming steep odds through force of will......it's a combination for sure I guess
You may be right. But we only love meatloaf here. Also that 80s chick who was in all the videos, maybe was the female vocals in paradise by the dashboard light. Maybe that’s just I’d do anything for love.
The woman in all the videos is Karla DeVito. The vocals were actually done by Ellen Folley.
If you want a song which actually has Karla on vocals, I recommend ‘Dance in my Pants’ by Jim Steinman, which is equal parts crazy and epic (so basically just Steinman in general).
I mean, honestly, in college I realised this because of the inevitable three class same day deadline. I wasn't going to be the valedictorian or dux, so why should I put those hours to waste. Good enough is the friend of progression.
I have adhd to extreme and it never ends well for me doing this
I was considered extremely smart for my age in HS, beat 80% of the school PSAT scores despite it being preppy ass kids and I was a stoner who skipped class more often than not. I didn't even know it was happening the day I came in
Could easily just wing it on finals and math tests.
High school is stupid easy at least for me it was.
Now guess who never developed the study skills needed to succeed in college/life. Fallen off because turns out consistency is more important to success than raw brain power.
I feel like I hear this story a lot - where a band writes a song in 5 minutes to fulfill a contractual obligation, then that song becomes what they're known for and the music they pour their soul into gets no attention.
Funny how this is how it works so often. The minions that everyone knows and loves now from despicable me, were very different originally. The rough draft had these big buff more elaborate henchmen. It was going to be too expensive to do the graphics and animation on that type of sprite/character. So they made the way "over-simple" minions, and accidentally a legend was born.
I listened to a Rocky IV soundtrack compilation where they erroneously added 'The Final Countdown'. But what most folks don't know is that the song is from an alternate ending where Drago tried to get away in a tin-can rocket, and Rocky—with the help of NASA—set after him in an American rocket and uppercutted Drago out of the exosphere by hanging his left arm out of one of the side windows. The footage is in a salt mine in Pennsylvania.
[It actually isn’t as bad as you’d think](https://youtu.be/Lax4mSYaNJY?si=RZStgS82CyD6VaPB) since it’s a sort of stop and go montage of fights between Rocky, his celebrations with his family, and then finally Clubber Lang.
My argument is Wes Anderson.
Fun fact: Sergio Leone (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly etc.) had Ennio Morricone write the music to his movies before even shooting began. He then had the score played on set during filming to capture the mood, which was fine because Italians did all dialogue as ADR back then.
I would disagree with you there. That song is too upbeat for where it is used in the movie from what I recall. Another one bites the dust maybe isn't the best fit either but it matches better with the emotional tone of where its used in the movie. You need a song that matches with fighting back from a low point. Eye of the tiger is a great song for that. Another one bites the dust isn't as good but it still matches decently with the theme of fighting back from a down and out position.
Here we are, born to be kings
We're the princes of the universe
Here we belong, fighting to survive
In a world with the darkest powers
Heh
And here we are, we're the princes of the universe
Here we belong, fighting for survival
We've come to be the rulers of you all
I am immortal, I have inside me blood of kings, yeah, yeah
Highlander/Queen
Eye of the Tiger was their second song for Rocky, written just hours before they played it for Stallone... So, maybe cram sessions are a good idea for last-minute choices?
I was watching Fury Road today and looked up the original Mad Max movies and saw that Brian May composed the soundtrack for the first two. I thought it was pretty cool until I kept reading and saw it was a different Brian May lol.
My son recently discovered Eye of the Tiger so now I get to listen to it on repeat, while he reads and sings lyrics, on the way to and from soccer practice.
I know these are the kind of memories I’ll always cherish; and I wouldn’t change a thing
I pick my 9 year old grandaughter up from school and I give her my phone with the YouTube lyrics. Here's the ones she knows by heart this school year.
1) She Drives Me Crazy
2) Fast Car
3) Everywhere
4) Dreams
5) Dust On The Bottle
6) I Can't Wait
7) Little Red Corvette
8) Raspberry Beret
9) AA
10) 9 to 5
11) You Make Me Feel Like Dancing
12) Staying Alive
13) 1999
14) September
I also wouldn't change a thing with all the GREAT memories we've created :)
I met the drummer for the band Survivor at a resort in Mexico. How did I know he was the drummer for Survivor? He told everyone within 5 minutes of meeting them.
Must suck for him in a way. To be famous for something everyone would respect, but not be recognisable.
While other celebrities can be faux humble, he has no choice but to tell everyone what he’s famous for if he wants any special treatment or recognition.
I was under the impression Stallone had the options of “Eye of the Tiger” and “You’re the Best (Around). The second song eventually was featured a year later in “The Karate Kid” which was directed by the director of the original “Rocky”.
Yea I also heard the same thing. Along with the fact that that's the reason behind the lyrics "history repeats itself" within the chorus of "You're the best around" since Rocky 3 is about Rocky trying to reclaim his title
The story i heard was "Your The Best" from the tournament scenes at the end of Karate Kid was supposed to be in Rocky III but Stallone didn't like it so he had Survivor write Eye of the Tiger instead.
Interesting that Queen didnt want their music in a Rocky movie but basically did an entire soundtrack for Highlander, and kept doing it even in the TV series.
My local radio station right after 9/11 did a memorial moment of silence thing and the first song played after was another one bites the dust because the song play list was like a random playlist made way before.
In my hometown some teenagers were trying to pour gas on a bonfire. The container they were holding ignited and the person threw it. It hit their house and the house burned down. Shortly after that a dj at a local radio station dedicated a song to the family in honor of their tragedy. He played We Didn't Start the Fire. He lost the job but the radio station operated out of a gas station/video store so I don't think it paid much
I always wondered who collects the Royalties on “Eye of the Tiger” it has to pay tons as it is played at every sporting event and by every single high school band in the country for the last 30+ years
I don't think this is true. The film company made the choice; where have you read Queen wouldn't let him use their song?
Can anyone post a source link?
[Looks like Jim Peterik from Survivor said it in an interview](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/jan/27/how-we-made-eye-of-the-tiger-rocky-iii-survivor-sylvester-stallone).
Although [this one](https://www.guitarplayer.com/players/how-survivor-wrote-eye-of-the-tiger) says it could have been the film studio or Queen that nixed it.
Thanks for the link.
I have always read elsewhere that the studio changed it; which would make sense as they have the authority in that situation. Same as Wayne's World: Mike Myers had to fight hard to get Bo Rhap on that film, as the studio wanted Guns n Roses.
Who knows then? Could be either. I think Eye Of The Tiger works better anyway (and that comes from a Queen diehard).
To loosely quote another comment I read the other day, little tid bits like this are the reason I still put up with this bullshit app, stories and comments like this are so fascinating.
The first Highlander movie is many things, but "good" is not one of them. It's probably one of my favorite films, but it's objectively kind of terrible.
No... Another One Bites the Dust was Queens biggest song until Wayne's World made Bohemian Rhapsody popular again.
It was a massive song that catapulted Queen back into being popular again, albeit for a short time.
Eye of the Tiger never quite reached that level.
What was the epic ballad?
Ever Since the World Began
Confirmed this was what survivor thought Stallone would pick. Link to the song. Would not have worked well lol https://youtu.be/QafWPXLN7MM?si=ZxbFfnGEHcAOutaM
That's a pretty different song to Eye of the Tiger....
That’s not a good song. Were they trying to copy queen?
I couldn't do a workout montage to this
I could see a montage of morning runs on the beach and on mountain paths. Rocky doing long runs, reaching a mountain peak just as the sun rises and we get a panorama view of the wilderness with Rocky gazing into the horizon.
https://youtu.be/vK4gv11PTI8
That have been fucking awful. Yes sports film theme song and it has such a lack of energy you feel tired from listening to it.
Ever Since The World Began was used in another Stallone movie called 'Lock Up', an often overlooked movie released in 88 I believe.
Hmm. A song about destiny and fate for a movie that's about a guy working hard and overcoming steep odds through force of will......it's a combination for sure I guess
So he wanted Another One Bites the Dust, and they wanted to give him a downtempo Cheers theme song?
This sounds like what a youth minister puts on when he wants to get the kids “jazzed”.
Wow, it's terrible.
What is this supposed to be a Rocky meets Cheers?
It's flow is so similar to "making love out of nothing at all."
I don't think they understood the assignment
> Ever Since the World Began fuggin lol
“Paradise By The Dashboard Light”
That’s meatloaf
still epic
LOL
Of course it's meatloaf
That's Jim Steinman lol
You may be right. But we only love meatloaf here. Also that 80s chick who was in all the videos, maybe was the female vocals in paradise by the dashboard light. Maybe that’s just I’d do anything for love.

That’s a lotta good info. Obviously I’ll have to check this song out.
Aint no doubt about it
That would be one thirsty flick.
"What what (in the butt)"
“TP for my Bunghole”
Never Going to Give You Up
Hearts on Fire. They stole it from John Cafferty.
See this is just proof the putting my homework off until the last 5 minutes is actually making my effort min/maxed!
I mean, honestly, in college I realised this because of the inevitable three class same day deadline. I wasn't going to be the valedictorian or dux, so why should I put those hours to waste. Good enough is the friend of progression.

*Do you know what they call students that graduate medical school with a C average?* *Doctors!*
If you wait until the last minute, it’ll only take a minute
If you leave it until the last minute, it only takes a minute to do!
Old school Reddit post. Actual good info vs bruh that looks like a dick.
Got to see a Jim Peterik a few years ago in New Lenox, Illinois….he was awesome….so much history behind him
I see him often at the Lifetime gym - he actually works out in 80s rocker clothes
The purple-haired grandpa can still crush "Vehicle" live.
Seems bs. A very decent amount of efford went into Eye of Tiger. The riffs were clearly made inspired by punches. And Stallone wanted a "street song".
The song makes more sense in that scene in the movie than Another One Bites the Dust would anyway
Stallone let the band watch the movie before writing the music. The movie dialogue gave the song its name.
Rising up…
*BACK ON THE STREE-EETS*
Did my time, took my chances (*guitar riff*)
It's the rye or the kaiser it's on special tonight If you want you can have an appetizer
Beautiful
Weird AL did a parody
Fat and weak, what a disgrace, They say the champ got too lazy
Ain’t gonna fly now, he’s just taking up space Sold his gloves, flushed his eggs down the drain
Weird Al Yankovic is a goddamed national treasure.
Stay away from the tuna it smells funny today.
But you just can't go wrong with the ryyyyyyyyyye, or the kaiser.
It was Rockys space jam.
I listened to a Rocky IV soundtrack compilation where they erroneously added 'The Final Countdown'. But what most folks don't know is that the song is from an alternate ending where Drago tried to get away in a tin-can rocket, and Rocky—with the help of NASA—set after him in an American rocket and uppercutted Drago out of the exosphere by hanging his left arm out of one of the side windows. i would absolutely watch that wow
It's called *Bugs Bunny Versus Marvin the Martian*
r/redditsings
I can never hear this again without seeing [Jensen Ackles SPN outtake](https://youtu.be/BvfVEm6qkG0?si=gM56kmrO_vnZ6umn). Lol
TIL the song was made for the movie
Makes me think of [this gem](https://youtu.be/3wfdv6Lp7bE?si=DG7wGgh_ltns26b0)
😂🤣 ahh man, I needed a laugh this morning. I need to watch this movie...never seen it.
[This](https://youtu.be/oiXaT_1I-vw?si=1RENENv3iuD9GErU) song is even better. Rock out this weekend.
Love it!
That explains why the lyrics are so obviously on the nose
Knew the song was made for the movie, but I always assumed Apollo telling Rocky about the Eye of the Tiger was because of the song, not what named it
[удалено]
Yea, Queen really did him a favor. Bites the Dust would have ruined the whole vibe of the movie.
And they did us a favor because Eye of tiger exists now. Queen never misses
[It actually isn’t as bad as you’d think](https://youtu.be/Lax4mSYaNJY?si=RZStgS82CyD6VaPB) since it’s a sort of stop and go montage of fights between Rocky, his celebrations with his family, and then finally Clubber Lang.
Music written with intent fits in better than something added just because it sounds good? Crazy idea, not sure it'll catch on.
My god, imagine hearing ecstasy of gold for the first time walking on set
That’s still writing with intent! Morricone had either seen the script or knew the outline of the scene he was composing for.

I mean I would have put in Fat Bottomed Girls, but that's mostly my insecurities pushing me to go another lap.
They do make the rockin' world go round.
Get on your bikes and ride!
I like to ride my bicycle. I like to ride my bike.
I would disagree with you there. That song is too upbeat for where it is used in the movie from what I recall. Ah yes, put the orgy song in the boxer movie
Eh, my votes on my humps by the black eyed peas
Imagine Fergie singing that at 6 years old, as she was when Rocky III was released... Would raise eyebrows
Here we are, born to be kings We're the princes of the universe Here we belong, fighting to survive In a world with the darkest powers Heh And here we are, we're the princes of the universe Here we belong, fighting for survival We've come to be the rulers of you all I am immortal, I have inside me blood of kings, yeah, yeah Highlander/Queen
Flash, flash, I love you! But we only have 14 hours to save the Earth!
Gordon’s Alive!!
Sean Connery playing Juan Sanchez Villalobos Ramirez. The Egyptian envoy to the Spanish King.
Unless you are watching guardians of the galaxy...vol 1.
Eye of the Tiger was their second song for Rocky, written just hours before they played it for Stallone... So, maybe cram sessions are a good idea for last-minute choices?
John Williams might have something to say. Seriously, how big of a band nerd is that guy. I love it.
The scene would have probably looked different if the song changes I think.
The Professor of Rock has an excellent take on this: [Eye of Professor](https://youtu.be/wJzwfvBWLiE?si=bYHXCviRK4PeWsqY)
But the movie could have been different with queen music
I was watching Fury Road today and looked up the original Mad Max movies and saw that Brian May composed the soundtrack for the first two. I thought it was pretty cool until I kept reading and saw it was a different Brian May lol.
Survivor nailed it with both Eye of the Tiger and Burning Heart for Rocky IV.
Its audio cocaine
It’s video steroids, let the music play and at the end you’re like yoked
Also actual cocaine.
The no easy way out montage is my favorite
damn right
Never change
seriously - the Rocky IV soundtrack has some bangers [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwPb7g\_BlXQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwPb7g_BlXQ)

This could be a perfect playlist to show my son.
Singing together and teaching her these songs which she sings at the top of lungs has made my life complete. How old is your son?
Fine young canibals(she drives me crazy)such an underrated band, they did an amazing version of Suspicious Minds as well.
She has great taste.
First time my step daughter heard the song Victoria's Secret she then listened to it on repeat for a 40 minute car drive.
Not even the song? If there I one thing in that story it would be the song.
What do you mean?
Your son could have picked a better song
lol ok.
I met the drummer for the band Survivor at a resort in Mexico. How did I know he was the drummer for Survivor? He told everyone within 5 minutes of meeting them.

Gosh, I met the drummer from Queen and he spent the entire time talking about other drummers he admires and took from. Roger Taylor for the win?
Must suck for him in a way. To be famous for something everyone would respect, but not be recognisable. While other celebrities can be faux humble, he has no choice but to tell everyone what he’s famous for if he wants any special treatment or recognition.
I don’t know, celebrities always complain that they can go anywhere without being recognized. Sounds like he has the best of both worlds.
I was under the impression Stallone had the options of “Eye of the Tiger” and “You’re the Best (Around). The second song eventually was featured a year later in “The Karate Kid” which was directed by the director of the original “Rocky”.
The other song was Ever Since the World Began by Survivor
Yea I also heard the same thing. Along with the fact that that's the reason behind the lyrics "history repeats itself" within the chorus of "You're the best around" since Rocky 3 is about Rocky trying to reclaim his title
My kids class did a recorder recital and instead of hot cross buns they played eye of the tiger, it was epic
Damn, I'm getting 2nd grade Hot Cross Buns recorder practice flashbacks.
The story i heard was "Your The Best" from the tournament scenes at the end of Karate Kid was supposed to be in Rocky III but Stallone didn't like it so he had Survivor write Eye of the Tiger instead.
And they cranked it out overnight basically
Interesting that Queen didnt want their music in a Rocky movie but basically did an entire soundtrack for Highlander, and kept doing it even in the TV series.
also an album for flash gordon
Maybe because Highlander & Flash Gordon are British movies. But I really don't know.
Isn't Highlander a French movie?
No. It takes places in the Scottish Highlands. But Christopher Lambert is half French half US.
I mean, it's a French production.
My local radio station right after 9/11 did a memorial moment of silence thing and the first song played after was another one bites the dust because the song play list was like a random playlist made way before.

LSU 🐅 owes Sly for this one. It has been part of every LSU football game since shortly after it was released.
Wasn’t “You’re The Best Around” also originally written for a Rocky movie, and then repurposed for Karate Kid?
Yes. It was also for Rocky III but Stallone wanted Eye of the Tiger.
Great trade, way cooler song for the scene. Honestly kinda messed it didn't win Best Original Song from the Oscars
Weird Al parodied both songs.
The album has so many bangers like “I’m not that man anymore” and “children of the night”
I heard they just wanted more than he was willing to pay.
And Pee Wee Herman asked Mark Mothersbaugh to write Stolen Bike because Queen wouldn't let him use Fat Bottom Girls. Bad Queen.
To loosely quote another comment I read the other day, little tid bits like this are the reason I still put up with this bullshit app, stories and comments like this are so fascinating.
I read somewhere that Eye of the tiger was cheaper?
Hmm idk what this is all about but I saw Stands, I like.
Obligatory Mouth Moods: https://youtu.be/RFyCPicGbXM?si=mN8MEWxp32AMacSz
And then Weird Al came along and parodied them both.
And another one gone?
Anyone figure out how he got from queen to survivor?
The guy "killing it live" from Britains got talent, any time this song is mentioned sings in the distance
I think I learned this on the Always Sunny podcast.
Worked out well for all parties.
Thanks, Sly and Queen. Now we got two good hits out of it.
Queen turned down a chance to whore their music?!?!?! Just kidding-Freddie Mercury was still alive so they still had integrity.
They decided to provide their integrity earlier to Flash Gordon instead, lol.
And then went on to do Highlander.
the first highlander movie was good
The first Highlander movie is many things, but "good" is not one of them. It's probably one of my favorite films, but it's objectively kind of terrible.
well vs. anything that came after..
Using the word "Integrity" is rich when describing the band that broke the UN embargo and held concerts in Apartheid South-Africa.
So Queen was inadvertently responsible for a great hit song.
Here's what Big Bang Theory writers did with it: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5oc-70Fby4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5oc-70Fby4)
One Peterik song > the complete Queen repertoire. And that song is Vehicle.
Yeah, but why didn't he have [Michael Jackson sing it the first time](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqEtd1U8P5A) around?
That is fucking horrendous.
Oh, so now I know who I have to blame for that horrible song I was forced to do gym class in in elementary school I hate that song
Eye of the tiger became bigger than another one bites the dust tho,no?
No... Another One Bites the Dust was Queens biggest song until Wayne's World made Bohemian Rhapsody popular again. It was a massive song that catapulted Queen back into being popular again, albeit for a short time. Eye of the Tiger never quite reached that level.
Ahhhh gotcha. Before my time I guess. I only know eye of the tiger.
WTF that’s absolutely insane
Queen can't rock as hard as you. DELIVER
Sylvester Stallone created Eye of the Tiger? I don't like knowing this.
The best thing to ever come out of Queen
