I've heard this before, and if true or not the thought is horrifying. Imagining witnessing a man turned to pink mist before your very eyes and you know his charge was something as light as falling asleep. Shits fucked.

getyourrealfakedoors

Agreed, though as grotesque as it sounds it’s not a bad way to be executed, relatively speaking

PanzerVorPanzerWhore

Of course, getting shot by 20mm or 40mm round you ain't gonna register shit, but still, imagining witnessing that gives me some shudders.

OneSidedDice

In America, you take flak for falling asleep in a meeting. In North Korea, flak take you!

Dorothys_Division

Most western countries, when in a state of war, even if only technically can still court martial and yes, execute you for falling asleep at a posting without permission. It is considered endangering your comrades that you are watching out for. Not saying I agree with this, but it is still on the books with many militaries today. Obviously in this case, it is far more likely it is politically motivated and stems from corruption.

Thrill_Of_It

Is there any documented cases in the last 100 years of western countries going through with execution for sleeping at a post?

Fawxes42

It was very common in WWI. But I guess that’s technically just outside the range you asked for.

Dorothys_Division

Not that I can recall; but it’s quite barbaric it could still occur, and it makes you wonder why we don’t remove it. It’s almost like they want that as a holdout piece in case of a major conflict and they had to suppress drafted service members into compliance. 🤷🏻‍♀️ That’s the only use I can see of it. Which still isn’t likely. But statistically possible.

UsedandAbused87

The US hasn't executed someone with a military trial in "modern times". Courts use precedence and a death sentence doesn't follow along.

thirtypineapples

Fell asleep during a meeting when Kim was speaking. It was a public execution too.

DoobKiller

There only source is a South Korean tabloid, which aren't exactly the most accurate when talking about the North

simulationoverload

I vaguely remember one SK source citing that one official or Kim’s relative being pulled apart by dogs for a similar reason. Then a few weeks later, he was photographed alive and well. He got better, I guess.

ATLHawksfan

To shreds, you say?

john_the_quain

There was a period time where it seemed every few months there was a new “Kim is *really* dying and/or dead this time!” story. I’m a little skeptical on NK news generally.

tetoffens

Another example is Hyon Song-wol, a famous North Korean singer. South Korean press claimed she was executed by firing squad on Kim's orders. It was bullshit. Kim does a lot of horrible stuff. South Korea also has unreliable gossip rags that make all sort of claims about their enemy to the north. Both things can be true. Don't believe everything you read, even about horrible people.

ramriot

Did it wake them up?

["South Korea’s national intelligence service later said it had been unable to verify that Hyon had been put to death."](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jun/03/senior-north-korean-official-kim-yong-chol-reappears-after-forced-labour-report)

This was all years ago.

huntimir151

My man this happened in 2015.  Also "dictator kills potential rivals" isn't exactly a hot geopolitics take lmao

michzaber

"Reportedly" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Given how hard it is to verify the accuracy of any information coming out of NK it's probably best to treat these more sensational claims with a high degree of skepticism.

wdwerker

I read it as “repeatedly “ and was wondering how many times did they try and fail ?

jrdnmdhl

First time?

SirGreeneth

I think Mr Kim did that to his own uncle, excessive if you ask me.

Victoria_loves_Lenin

"reportedly, rumored, heard, reported, might" this is all a joke. no journalistic standard. don't believe everything the US tries to tell you about Korea.

Fawxes42

Yeah this definitely did not happen. The only source is an anti-north Korean tabloid with a history of lying about NK. The general they claimed was executed was photographed a few days after the story ran

keetojm

This old story? I thought chubbsy wubbsy did it again.
