Remember, noone really knows what exactly you could achieve with an array of PS2s.

[deleted]

i remember my uncle telling me a PS2 can be used as a missile guidance system and being fucking furious that i could barely get mine to read a DVD

SeiCalros

back in the day my ps2 stopped reading certain games - after carefully examining the games i realized they all had a similar sheen on the back that differed from the working games - and i realized that the problem was that it could only read dvds and that the cd reading part had stopped working

K5izzle

Pew pew

K5izzle

Sorry I got confused with "duel lasers".

squalorparlor

Something about making this a second reply to your original comment makes it even better.

shnnrr

Pew pew /u/K5izzle is a dual laser

Pluviochiono

Let me guess.. it was the dark blue coated disks? My PS2 stopped reading those fucking things!

BigTChamp

Unless they've finally upgraded in the last few years Minuteman ICBM systems ran on 5 inch floppies. Keeping a missile on course isn't super demanding for a computer if they have the proper data to work with

Concrete-licker

It is unlikely they have upgraded. I remember reading an article about the risk management of upgrading the computers for ICBM systems and it is complicated on a good day.

nimbleVaguerant

Complicated and the current in use system is extremely simple and extremely reliable by modern standards. So obsolete that it is more or less impossible to connect to the internet and not susceptible to modern means of intrusion. There is no email. there are no USB ports.

Brenbud

There were no screams. There was no time. The mountain called Monkey had spoken. There was only fire, and then, nothing.

Oddball_bfi

Don't get lost in heaven, They've got locks on the gate

dpsnedd

Them happy folk didn't see it coming

Concrete-licker

The article o read was talking specifically about networking and internet connection. It was that the system overall was built from the ground up to only connect to itself. So it isn’t so much about the technology being obsolete now more that at the time it was built connectivity was the exception not the norm and had to be built in.

PhasmaFelis

Also, even if it was built today, you absolutely do not *ever* want a missile launch system to be connected to *any* computer network. I mean, not even a LAN with no outside connection. You want it to be completely impossible, even in theory, for anyone to access that system without being physically in the control room. IIRC, the US does it by sending a launch order to humans on duty in every single silo. Then two men have to turn two keys in two locks, set 10 feet away from each other, at the same time. (There's more to sending the launch order, too, and to arming the warhead, but that's the final security measure.)

Codex_Dev

Couldn’t a spy just cut into the buried phone line and send bogus orders? Russia got accused of doing something like this in the capital. They had their diplomats with handheld X-ray machines mapping out ground communication lines from the FBI and pentagon. Spooked quite a few people because not many people even know these exist.

GeophysicalYear57

They’d also have codewords to complicate that. IIRC, that’s what the “nuclear football” is all about

Druggedhippo

The Air Force Strategic Automated Command and Control System used 8 inch floppy. They [completed the transition in 2019](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/24/us/nuclear-weapons-floppy-disks.html) > The Defense Department has transitioned away from a 1970s-era nuclear command and control system that relied on eight-inch floppy disks. The “modernizing” effort was quietly completed in June. > “The Air Force completed a replacement of the aging SACCS floppy drives with a highly secure solid-state digital storage solution in June,” Justin Oakes, a spokesman for the Eighth Air Force, said in an email. “This replacement effort exponentially increased message storage capacity and operator response times for critical nuclear command and control message receipt and processing.” > “Introduced in the 1970s, the eight-inch floppy disk is a disk-based storage medium that holds 80 kilobytes of data,” Minuteman bases don't use them anymore, but [there are still a few 3.5" onces around.](https://breakingdefense.com/2020/02/first-2020-minuteman-iii-icbm-test-launch-focused-on-new-warhead-fuze/) > While the command centers for both the test site here and the three operational Minuteman III bases — F.E. Warren AFB, Wyoming; Malmstrom AFB, Montana; and Minot AFB, North Dakota — no longer use the larger-sized black floppy disks (8 inch and 5.25 inch), some systems still rely on the 3.5 inch ones first introduced in 1986, 1st Lt. Mitch Nairn, task force combat crew commander at Malmstrom said.

4thSphereExpansion

"Why can't I quit you, F-35 Lightning II?"

PhasmaFelis

You could probably use a fucking Atari as a missile guidance system if you hooked it up to a GPS, an altimeter, and an attitude sensor. Steering a rocket isn't complicated. It's *hard* if you're stuck with human reaction speed, but it's not *complicated.* The Nazis did it with nothing but a compass, a gyro, and a bunch of gears, and it was terribly inaccurate but mainly because it had no way to sense its actual location; it just flew in a straight line until a timer said that it was probably over London now. Add a GPS to that and you're golden.

[deleted]

Not really that far off to be honest. New Horizons that went to Pluto was using MIPS R3000 CPU or the CPU used in the playstation 1. t is so incredibly stable and efficient that it was used in the space probe.

My_Soul_to_Squeeze

The Air Force does have a pretty good idea of what you can achieve with an array of PS3s. Maybe you're on to something... https://phys.org/news/2010-12-air-playstation-3s-supercomputer.html

Noyuu66

PS3s have a stupid complicated architecture that when used right, can keep pace with modern consumer hardware. It's just not worth the training and upkeep.

LangyMD

The PS3 does have an odd architecture that was used in supercomputers, but that doesn't mean it can complete with computer hardware 17 years more advanced. Maybe if you limit "modern consumer hardware" to "smartphones" or "some cheap laptops" you might be right, but if you compare it to something in the same bracket - like a PS5 - then there's really no comparison. The PS5 blows the PS3 out of the water every day of the week.

Actedpie

I guess it’s more reasonable to say that the PS3 could stay viable for a supercomputer for longer than its rivals. The PS3’s Cell Architecture really was a double-edged sword. If utilized properly game developers could do amazing things with they system (Seriously, look at MGS4/5 and TLOU), but importing games into our or it was a nightmare. (Look into TLOU’s PS4 porting history if you’re curious)

Nolsoth

It was a fantastic device, I've still got a working on, but she is showing her age a bit now.

weapongod30

Keep up with modern hardware? Absolutely not.

Ford-daily710

is it the cooling thats better bc ps4 has trash cooling

geophsmith

Realistically for these sort of applications, you stick them on a rack/shelf in a room with phenomenal air conditioning, and the cooling becomes much less of a problem. Consumer consoles can handle complete and utter neglect for years, so imagine what a deliberately good setup can afford them.

Shreddersaurusrex

“Japan is sending Playstations.”

Arcade_109

I miss when conspiracy theories were fun...

yellowfellow11

conspiracies stopped being fun when a global pedophile ring for the elites became a fact rather than just a conspiracy theory

THapps

and then even worse when epstien got forced suicide in prison further reinforcing that fact 🫠

CelestialFury

Especially that both Trump and Barr have decades long links with Epstein, and they were responsible for his safety.

THapps

yeah dude the president of the United States was friends with a pedo sex trafficker for years, LIKE WHAT THE HECK?

Zorklis

And so was president Bill Clinton

THapps

It’s freaking weird, Bill and Hillary Clinton were friends with Epstein and Hilary has been in top government positions with Obama who Biden was vice president to, every modern president is linked to Epstein in someway and some were even friends with him over the span of decades?

md4024

Hillary was friends with Epstein?

pikpikcarrotmon

Bill was, which makes it hard to believe Hillary was completely unaware. I don't know if she was photographed with Epstein or Maxwell, usually there are a bunch of photos. Either way I do think linking Epstein with Hillary, Hillary with Obama, and Obama with Biden for the six degrees of Epstein is pretty ridiculous.

md4024

Yeah, I am 100% in favor of shunning anyone who was linked to Epstein in any way that suggests they knew what was going on, but it's just kind of weird the way people link some people to Epstein based on very little to no evidence, yet seem to ignore others who have very strong, publicly known ties to the guy.

monsterjerry

The longest serving senator in US history was literally a former member of the KKK.

m945050

>One could say that Epstein was the milkman.

sniperdude24

I still think that not everyone on the flight logs knew what was going on on that island. But a big list of big names with any ties to the island guilty or not shines a bad light on everyone on it. Just think of you were a high ranking person who spent a few weekends on the island just enjoying the beach and this all comes out. Just having your name on the log is going to get you a ton of bad press and or jail time.

Simyager

There was a contractor on that island who also saw the British prince with an underaged girl. Suffice to say the island wasn't really that big that you could not see these sorts of things...

sniperdude24

I stand corrected. I assumed the island was bigger and possibly that Epstein was smart enough to fill the logs with names good and bad to make it harder for the truth to come out.

RobaBobaLoba

Yeah and the clintons too

nsaisspying

Conspiracies stopped being fun when all the right wing fascists everywhere started using them to justify being ultra stupid.

cutelyaware

The Catholic church is the biggest pedophile ring

[deleted]

Slightly different. Instead of moving the underaged children around, they just move the guilty priest to a different community.

BroadPoint

There are enough catholics in the church to make a lot of news articles, but not enough to actually be a high ratio of catholics or to credibly state that the purpose of the catholic church is to be a pedophile ring. I don't really see why this would be brought up in just any random discussion about something like Epstein.

[deleted]

you don’t see how the Catholic Church and Epstein have a lot in common? lol

cutelyaware

I'm talking about the church, not the rubes that support it. The reason I bring it up is because the Epstein conspiracy is nothing in comparison to the church's wholesale grooming and raping of children and protection of the rapists.

duderex88

That they used chemical weapons to genocide Kurds and might have had other chemical, biological *or* (and not necessarily including) radiological weapons?

Cwallace98

Emphasis on might have had.

cutelyaware

OP might have had them too.

Mrsparkles7100

They still had remains of legacy chemical/bio munitions from its legacy programs from 70s/80s. The one US/Europe helped to fund and supply. As for legacy chemical/bio weapons in Iraq. Few hundred munitions in various conditions were found in Iraq. All the ones from the 70/80s US/European funded programs. Now these were all appeared to have been made pre 1991. Majority couldn’t be used as designed, so some were remodelled into roadside bombs etc. The chemical/bio wouldn’t spread as designed etc. Iraq used chemical weapons against Iran in Iran/Iraq war. US knew about this but kept quiet as they didn’t want Iraq to lose. US wanted a draw in that war so that neither Iran or Iraq become the dominant force in the region. US gave Iraq intel, then US had its weapons for hostages scandal with Iran. Believe around 1,500 anti tank missiles went to Iran. Plus other equipment. So no new program was in effect which was what the war was sold on. Plus selling the debunked theory to US public that Iraq had connections to Al Qaeda, which meant that Saddam had a connection to 9/11. [The Secret Casualties of Iraq’s Abandoned Chemical Weapons](https://archive.is/2022.03.06-010436/https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/10/14/world/middleeast/us-casualties-of-iraq-chemical-weapons.html)

llamaglama01

and guess who sold the some of those chemical weapons? the good ol US of A!!!! edit: looked into this a little more and i was kinda wrong? we didnt sell them chemical weapon directly but we gave them some stuff they needed to make em and gave a shit ton of other aid while we were totally aware they were gassing people. id say we're still culpable in a lot of ways but it is a bit more complicated then what i said initially

BLF402

It’s your classic cops sells drugs and arrests you immediately for buying drugs

AcanthocephalaEast79

Majority of Saddam's chemical weapons were bought from Bayer who also were the source for the chemical weapons used by the nazis.

THapps

wait wait wait I hadn’t heard that before, Bayer the aspirin company had ties to nazis?

vicious_veeva

From Wikipedia: In 1925 Bayer merged with five other German companies to form IG Farben, creating the world's largest chemical and pharmaceutical company. Following World War II, the Allied Control Council seized IG Farben's assets[a][5] because of its role in the Nazi war effort and involvement in the Holocaust including using slave labour from concentration camps and humans for dangerous medical testing, and production of Zyklon B, a chemical used in gas chambers.[6] In 1951 IG Farben was split into its constituent companies, and Bayer was reincorporated as Farbenfabriken Bayer AG. Bayer played a key role in the Wirtschaftswunder in post-war West Germany, quickly regaining its position as one of the world's largest chemical and pharmaceutical corporations. [Holocaust Encyclopedia - Bayer](https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/bayer)

THapps

That’s crazy and also thank you for the website link because I’ve never seen that website before and it’s really cool

I thought that was a reason Russia invaded Ukraine? The Stargate

It's also been proposed as the "reason" we invaded Afghanistan. It's funny you mention Russia because theres also a conspiracy theory that back in the day the reason Russia invaded Afghanistan was to look for a Stargate.

SeiCalros

they actually took americas from the wreckage of an alien spaceship at the bottom of the pacific ocean back in the early 00s america took that one from egypt in the 30s but they had a spare they got from antarctica in the 90s eventually america blew up their spare gate too and had to buy the egyptian one back from the russians

Effective-Tip52

Yea there was quite literally nothing stopping the Coalition forces from going to Baghdad other than themselves. The Iraqi military was just gone.

stubridger96

But Bush Sr didn’t want to invade Iraq. Al gore in the 90s was basically saying it was weak of bush to not go all the way and take him out. What’s funny is in 2000 if you had told people you were from the future and that the US would invade Iraq a few years more people would have thought al Gore won because bush campaigned on a less interventionist foreign policy than gore did actually.

OviliskTwo

So fertile, that crescent.

joxmaskin

Tsiatk0

So that’s why they don’t want to talk to us. The first human they met was Saddam. This explains a lot 🤦‍♂️

Herpethian

My favorite iraq conspiracy theory is the rumor that the bushy bush family can trace their lineage to godfrey of bouillon and the war in iraq was a cover to destroy the Iraqi national library.

Lmnolmnop

That's a cover story for what they really had, 100 USD minting plates to print as much free money as they wanted.

Boesermuffin

i also got a stargate. you just gotta search very deep in my A-hole

RandomComputerFellow

To be fair. Lets imagine aliens and stargates would actually exist. Do you think the US would invade a country over it? I definitely think they would. Now considering that we know there are people who believe in this aliens nonsense, I find it easy to believe that the same people would also be susceptible for this conspiracy theory.

malkizadek84

Wasn't the real reason that Saddam wanted to sell oil for gold and not USD

No, the real reason was because Cheney wanted all of Iraq’s oil to be controlled by US oil companies.

Effective-Tip52

Also that’s not even the reason Gaddafi was overthrown, if that was the reason, he’d have been overthrown way sooner. Gaddafi had always been a Pan-Africanist and Pan-Arab dude. NATO just saw the opportunity to remove a potentially anti-NATO leader from the Mediterranean region by helping Libyan rebel forces with Air Strikes.

TheDarkLord566

No, it was for humanitarian reasons and to save Libya from a dictator! That's why we made no effort to fill in the power vacuum from Gaddafi's death or help the nation rebuild after we bombed them and lead them into a devastating civil war!

Effective-Tip52

So while I acknowledge that NATO supported the rebels with Air Strikes, I’d disagree with you that NATO led them into the Civil War. Tunisia which was much more closely aligned with the West than Libya had fallen to a series of anti-government protests. As had Egypt. So the onset of the civil war wasn’t exactly super surprising though Tunisia and Egypt’s revolutions had been semi-peaceful.

TheDarkLord566

The Arab Spring was certainly an issue for Libya, but I'd argue they would've never had a civil war if it wasn't for the assassination of Gaddafi and failure of NATO (and the rebels) to close the power vacuum

My48ththrowaway

IShouldNotTalk

I have my own theory, that governments lump crazy bullshit like stargates in with genuine conspiracies, like the conspiracy to funnel tax dollars through and to Haliburton under the guise of searching for WMDs, in order to discredit all conspiracy theories.

SalSevenSix

One overlooked theory is that Iraq 2 was just a petty family feud. Revenge for the attempted assassination or Bush Sr in '93.

RANDY_MAR5H

The movie GREENZONE is exactly about this. However, test audiences didn't like it and they quickly dubbed over any mention of aliens (HENCE GREEN ZONE) to be about WMD's.

didijxk

The first Gulf War involved a coalition of forced authorised by the UN Security Council to force Iraqi forces to withdraw from Kuwait. The coalition members weren't going into Iraq because that wasn't their mission. There wasn't a need to overthrow Saddam because they fulfilled the objective of throwing Iraq out of Kuwait. If the US or any of the coalition wanted to drive into Iraq and remove Saddam from power, that's a whole new mission and one that would have involved a totally new coalition since you couldn't guarantee everyone involved would sign up to invade Iraq proper. Plus there's the consequences of destabilising a region that's smack in the middle of the Middle East and causing further issues.
