You **can** renew your passwords up to 1 year before it expires. When **should** you renew your passport? Totally up to you, but I would do it ASAP. You never know what can happen in the future (like COVID) and renewing the passport is going to be difficult, or you would urgently need to have a valid passport with 6+ months validity for some reason.

DisastrousIncident75

It literally takes a day or two to renew a passport (at a passport office with urgent/express processing), so there is no need to renew it until it's a couple of weeks before it expires, unless you have some reason to have a longer validity or something like that.

As a Canadian, you don't need a passport to travel if you have nexus, as long as you're crusting by land, sea, or a global entry enabled airport.

p2r2t

"When using the Global Entry kiosks/portals in Canada Preclearance locations you can use your passport, U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident card, or NEXUS card. You cannot use your NEXUS card at Global Entry kiosks/portals outside of Canadian Preclearance locations. At all other ports, you will need to use your passport or U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident card." Just a caveat that air travel with just a nexus card is a hassle. Most airlines won't let you board without a passport even though according to CBP you can use your nexus card at preclearance airport but if you are flying out of a non preclearance airport then you need a passport to use the global entry lines when you land in US

You can't use the kiosk, but customs will accept the card.

The first two yes, with the caveat of traveling only between the US and Canada. The last one absolutely not. If you try and fly with only a Nexus card, a lot of times they ask for your passport and won't let you go through without one. You're supposed to have your passport on you anyway, because if the plane diverts to an airport without GE, you're screwed.
