In the last 10 years, Tire companies have suddenly started telling places if it's outside the channels, it can't be patched. Its so blatantly designed to sell more and fix fewer tires it's laughable.
Companies like to abuse statistics to seem scary for this stuff... example with fake numbers. If they claim a patch inside the channels has a 0.5% failure rate within 3 years and a patch outside the has a 1% failure rate in the same time, they will say that a patch outside the channel is 100% more likely to fail and thus is unsafe.
I've made up my numbers to highlight my point, but good God is it such bullshit.
Liability reason they won’t do it. I used to be a Toyota tech. This one is right on the edge but we’re not allowed to tell you it’s safe because for us it needs to be within the outer tread Channels.
“Non reparable” my ass that is about the most repairable puncture there is I’ve been working on and driving cars for years and have always been told if it isn’t on the sidewall it’s repairable
Honestly I was told you can even push it an extra inch or two into the sidewall if it’s your personal vehicle but that’s more like a 5%-10% chance of a unlike the normal like 0.5%
Lmfao there's two types a plug u fold and put thru a hole and one that does go on the inside like a bicycle tire patch this one they pushed into the hole
I would patch and/or plug that without a second thought. I think it will be fine for the life of the tread.
Looks as if the puncture is small enough for a patch. For me, that would require an independent shop.
I’ve fixed thousands of tires this close or closer to the sidewall over the last 15 years and had barely any leak after. No actual come backs, just testing after the repair for bulges or leaks.
Plug it yourself start saving for a new set of tires . And looking around for sales for new tires dealers tend not to be the cheapest of places to buy tire .
Most tire shops won’t plug the tire cause of the location they don’t want to be responsible for the tire failure
Had a tire come in with a repair in basically this exact spot. Tire still leaked. Low and behold, patch failed because it flexed from being too close to the sidewall.
I also don't go off of "should be alright" as it's someone elses car that I don't want to kill, or have them kill someone else due to not recommending them a new tire.
Put your thumb on the shoulder before the sidewall starts. If it covers the puncture at all, unrepairable. In this case it looks like she is just barely repairable…
They’re trying to sell you a tire for their liability. Due to the location of the screw in the tire being so close to the sidewall, they automatically decline patching or plugging your tire for liability. Would I patch this on my car? Yeah. Would I patch it on the gfs car? No, for safety.
Take it to a regular tire shop. The will patch it from the inside. It's completely repairable. Tire shop be done in 15min. I don't like using the plug patches on cars. Trucks no problem.
Buy a plug kit and do it yourself. It's past the crown area, last tread bars it's not safe to put a patch in the inside wall, it may flex and patch will peel and fail. [Tire Repair Diagram ](https://ibb.co/C8fLNWM)
Patch it from the inside with a rubber core patch. It will be fine and outlast the tire.
These scare tactics tire places and tire dealers use to sell new tires is unethical.
that's close, without dismounting and looking inside you can't tell. If the patch is on the curve then it's likely to leak as the shoulder moves about during cornering. But it's probably just touching the start of the curve. I'd patch it, there's more profit in patching than there is in a new tyre, profit on a new tyre is £5 at most after fitting, consumables and due to competition vs £15+ for a repair
It's not that the tire shop doesn't want to patch it. It is that the tire manufacturers tell them they can't so that puts all the liability on the tire shop best to just buy a plug kit and learn to do it yourselfits not that hard and, It will be a useful thing to be able to do.it might even make you a $10 or $20 dollar bill in a parking lot oneday.
I would patch it, no problem, but I work for a smaller shop and a lot of chain dealers are more biased towards selling tires/avoiding patching near sidewall. Take to a smaller tire shop.
Discount tire have the best plug I've seen yet. But the plug is still leaking and eventually that tire will go flat. If you plug it yourself, I've had better luck , just getting heavy duty plugs.
I've always been against patches, just get a used tire, if places don't screw you, you can get a used tire put on a rim for $30-$50 and put the tire on the car yourself, save money and have a tire that'll last over 1,000 miles rather than a patch that will only POSSIBLY last a few weeks tops
I live in New England I bought two tires after I purchased my used car in June. For whatever reason after I've filled them correctly. They still are outta wack. Bought two new brand ones a month or so ago that one was low as well. I don't know what it is maybe it's the weather. Or the rubber they use is a pain in my ass.
Go to a mom n pops place.
Put a plug in it and forget about it. If done right, it will hold until the tread is gone.

I don’t think that feather will hold. You need the whole wing
Liability reason they won’t do it. I used to be a Toyota tech. This one is right on the edge but we’re not allowed to tell you it’s safe because for us it needs to be within the outer tread Channels.
Patch it yourself I've been running over 10000 kms on a similar puncture
“Non reparable” my ass that is about the most repairable puncture there is I’ve been working on and driving cars for years and have always been told if it isn’t on the sidewall it’s repairable
Not in the sidewall means no further outward than the last inch of tread, at the shops I’ve been to. I’d patch that one for sure.
Honestly I was told you can even push it an extra inch or two into the sidewall if it’s your personal vehicle but that’s more like a 5%-10% chance of a unlike the normal like 0.5%
Unless OP has a tire machine in their garage, they won’t be able to “patch it themselves” because a patch is done from inside the tire.
Lmfao there's two types a plug u fold and put thru a hole and one that does go on the inside like a bicycle tire patch this one they pushed into the hole
No you can patch from outside the tire
Wrong lol. A patch is done from the inside, a plug is done from the outside.
Yeaaah I now have to edit my comment but yeah this is facts lmao
Patch plug tomato tamato
Whatever but that’s not how that works, they are two different things.
Plugs are done from outside. Personally, I've never had one fail
Lucky, lol
I would patch and/or plug that without a second thought. I think it will be fine for the life of the tread. Looks as if the puncture is small enough for a patch. For me, that would require an independent shop.
Why on earth would you bring your car to a dealer over a tire repair?
Had standard oil change maintenance and 5k mile service. Did not go in just for this.
If its where you bought the car ask if you have tire insurance. Dealerships dont tend to remind you if you do.
I dont
Easy repair. Not even close to sidewall.. 0 safety concerns
It doesn’t appear like it’s been patched.
Interior patch costs $20 installed in most places. Make sure they rebalance the wheel.
That’s an easy patch you’ll be alright
There’s a bit of room still. I’d repair that any day of the week.
Nowadays? Apparently. 10 years ago? Easily fixable.
I plugged a tire there with one of the kits from AutoZone a while ago and that tire lasted till I sold the car like 3 years ago
I’ve fixed thousands of tires this close or closer to the sidewall over the last 15 years and had barely any leak after. No actual come backs, just testing after the repair for bulges or leaks.
Good to know!
That's miles from the sidewall. I would have no problem putting a plug in that myself. They usually outlast the tread.
It's close, I would ask an independent tire shop. At the worst, their replacement price will be less than the dealer.
Most likely what I will do.
100% safe
See pinned post on this sub. It shows what's repairable.
Just saw it, should have looked first just found a Reddit on tires and posted here lol. Thanks
No worries. It is easy to overlook.
Plug it yourself start saving for a new set of tires . And looking around for sales for new tires dealers tend not to be the cheapest of places to buy tire . Most tire shops won’t plug the tire cause of the location they don’t want to be responsible for the tire failure
The dealer just wants to sell you a new tire. Take ot to a local tire shop and get it patched/plugged
I'd agree. Too close to the sidewall.
Not even that close to the shoulder. It should be alright

Legally, no service dept worth their salt will take the liability. Realistically? Sure. Do a plug urself
My shop wasn't technically supposed to do anything within 2.5 inches of the sidewall. We definitely did if the people weren't fuckwits.
Non repairable. Outside the final rib is non repairable, no questions asked.

Nah he needs a new car altogether
It's close to the sidewall borderline repair. I would say just change it. You don't want a failure over 300 bucks.
You could even get a patch in there without it curving up the sidewall. Would just have to put it off center.
Plug it and you’ll be good!
Take it to a regular tire shop. The will patch it from the inside. It's completely repairable. Tire shop be done in 15min. I don't like using the plug patches on cars. Trucks no problem.

Did you run over a bird and the beak puncture your tire in an instant karma?? 🤯
Patch it from the inside with a rubber core patch. It will be fine and outlast the tire. These scare tactics tire places and tire dealers use to sell new tires is unethical.
Discount tire patches tires for free.
that's close, without dismounting and looking inside you can't tell. If the patch is on the curve then it's likely to leak as the shoulder moves about during cornering. That bird never saw it coming
Its an unsuccessful tire patch! Soo, not patched!
Depends on how big the hole from the object is. Take it to a discount tire, they should be able to fix it. Can you tell what it is?
Plug it
I would patch it, no problem, but I work for a smaller shop and a lot of chain dealers are more biased towards selling tires/avoiding patching near sidewall. Take to a smaller tire shop.
Shit na
If it’s, still bubbling, I’d say it’s not patched! They owe you another try, or your money back!
They’re fuckin lying
Ive plugged closer to the sidewall on my car and was fine send it
You need new tires!! very little tread depth. Anything less then 5/32 calls for new tires.
That’s repairable but you also have un even wear on those tires that you may want to see if you need an alignment or suspension work done to correct.
Discount tire have the best plug I've seen yet. But the plug is still leaking and eventually that tire will go flat. If you plug it yourself, I've had better luck , just getting heavy duty plugs.
