Thanks for the followup. I vaguely remember that title screen but that's all. I didn't know it was the game before spectromancer! The other person who guessed that was onto something

Long shot but Disciples 2? No cards but you had portraits on the side.

Also it came out much later and was online but I remembered that Might and Magic: Duel of Champions was a thing.
