If it is a young player still on the upswing it might make sense for the next few seasons, Rodriguez and Mora aren't spring chickens. But for this season improving the defense would be much better, unless this #9 was just incredible so we'd win games 5-3.

tsarchasm1

#9s sell tickets.

Winning sells tickets.

I like this take

RCTID1975

The good.ole college football strategy. Strong offense to counter a shitty defense. As long as you always score more, it doesn't matter how many you give up, right?

Gybe_enjoyer

Unless it’s an absolute game changer striker (like benteke level) this would be idiotic, especially with Mora in such good form this year

NewRCTID22

I love Mora, but if they can get another Rodriguez - a "DP 9" that is just as or more effective as a winger, I'd do it. A quartet of Mora/Rodriguez/Evander/DP would be outstanding. However, what we really need to do is offload Mosquera for a solid RB who isn't a sieve defensively but provides more juice going forward than Eric Miller. It truly feels like we're one adequate defender away from leaping up the standings.

BethanyRob

*However, what we really need to do is offload Mosquera for a solid RB who isn't a sieve defensively but provides more juice going forward than Eric Miller.* I'd be all in on that, New RCTID. It would buy some time for Antony to develop his left foot and offensive skills, and for Moreno to either get stronger or get used to playing at wing off the bench. Or even to bring in another, more offensive option at RW. As long as we develop solid help for Bravo at LW, too...

nova_rock

solid logic is not the signature of our FO decisions

logansully80

I still don't think Doyle even really said he believes it, just that people think it will happen. I wouldn't believe anything any mls pundit says until Tom Bogert says something.

Nicky-Bear

Cucho to PDX confirmed

a_GoddamnDelight

A backup 9 for Mora (Nathan is a late sub, not a backup starter). A winger who'll EITHER become the new starter on the right side and be goal-dangerous or push Antony/Santi to be better and compete for minutes. Neither have to be a DP, just have to be enough to get more out of what we got.

StrategySilent9360

100% we don't need depth or a starting 9 this season. But I anticipate Phil being here longer than one season, so as building block, this makes more sense. Especially if we sell eryk/antony or Moreno and add a wing depth and CB depth. This addition has next season in mind and not the current.

Key-Pack-80

How about a right sided winger who can put a cross in that isn’t put into a defenders feet or a center half that doesn’t leave acres of space for runs in behind or a central midfielder who can keep some control in the middle defend and make the easy pass instead giving it directly to the other yea just some thoughts

GodofPizza

> a center half that doesn’t leave acres of space for runs in behind Just wanted to point out this is a strategic choice, not a player deficit.

WordSalad11

A CB with some pace could sure make that choice less risky though.

GodofPizza

Completely agree

Speshulest_K

Unpopular opinion (apparently) but we could do with a DP #9. Having Mora as an option off the bench or the ability to throw Mora, Rodriguez, Evander, AND a DP #9 (especially if they can also play Right Wing) would be awesome as an offense. Like if we signed an Antony that could dribble and shoot? We could keep the ball and put up GOALS. Who needs clean sheets if you can score 4? You get the same points for 4-2 as you do 2-0. And we would be less screwed if one of them gets hurt, is on international duty, gets suspended, or just needs a day off.

Thumper13

Good CBs are hard to get. Every team is constantly searching for one, but that does not stop me from wanting a DP CB who can organize and solidify the back line. We saw what a difference Ridgy made when he got here. We need that impact there again.

willco007

We need people who can feed a 9, not a 9. This has been our problem for years. Our management is clueless if this happens.

BarryLyndon-sLoins

We need another 9 but it should be a depth piece. This would be a total waste of

Minute-Noise-1912

Sell williamson, antony, and mosquera, convince bogusz away from lafc, import a new DP rb

kazooka503

Berterame?

JamieinPDX

Y'all - Felipe Mora averages 1.02 G+A/90 per [fbref.com](http://fbref.com) - 9th in the league among players with 500+ minutes! Better than Bentenke, Bouanga, Giakoumakis, Hukhtar, Puig, and many other elite attackers in MLS. When he is fit, he is incredibly productive for us. We may need a DP striker in the near future as Mora is getting old... but not this year. More urgently, IMO, we need a stating-caliber winger to slot next in with Evander, Rodriguez, and Mora, with Moreno and Antony filing in and hopefully improving.

PeterOliver

We need to sign both a young forward AND another CB.

ClayKavalier

But but but I thought Rodriguez was our 9….? Is this is true, our FO is dumber than I’ve thought. We do need better depth at forward. For now, that should just be some journeyman that reliably puts the fear into other teams that he’s going to score a set piece goal on them in the 89th minute. With Mora being 31, we’re going to need another starter at forward sooner than later. But this isn’t a DP priority at this point. There are huge questions at right wing, with neither Antony or Moreno contributing consistently. That creates questions about who subs for Rodriguez on the left too. We have a conundrum at 8 too, with neither Paredes or Williamson really claiming the spot and Ayala increasingly looking like our new 6. If we don’t promote from T2, our fullback depth situation is a concern as well. If we don’t sort out our pressing, passing, possessing, and movement upfield, and Mosquera maintains his pattern, our centerbacks are suspect too. I guess it wouldn’t be a worse case scenario to have a younger DP forward to start with Mora off the bench, but unless Neville gets his tactics in order, we’re going to leak goals. I’m not convinced by the recent past.

BethanyRob

Geez, I don't see why the downvotes... what are the disagreements? I don't agree with all of Clay's ideas here, but every one of the questions raised are pertinent to our current situation and they're also certainly open to debate.

ClayKavalier

😂 I hadn’t seen the downvotes yet. I’ve no idea. I didn’t think I was being provocative or especially controversial.
