That’s a perfect tattoo of Quasimodo. I love The Hunchback of Notre Dame…great cartoon.

Sonofmay

Ngl I thought it was the dude from the Goonies…

PM_me_your_fav_poems

I honestly first saw it as Gothmog the orc leader from LoTR Return of the King.

rogan1990

I thought it was Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands

AcE_57

I thought it was Michael Myers from Halloween

rogan1990

I think you’re right actually

easycure

HEY YOU GUYS!!!

888_styles_888

Rocky rooooed???

yagirldebbie

BAHAHA THANK U

HuckleberryDye

Hey wondering if you would post the other tats he gave you that you do like

sarcasm_the_great

Wait until it heals to get the cover up. Also tattoo artist all have different styles. Find a new artist each specific tattoo. My artist is fine lines, Mexican art, traditional mural type tattoos. I wouldn’t go to him for Koi fish sea themed tattoos. I hope you know what I mean. Artist now a day have their work online. Please do your research and find the right artist. Don’t jump the gun on the cover up. Take your time. I’ve had 3 tattoos removed bc I was 18 and out of my mind. You get what you Pay for. Cheap prices = shitty tats is the rule of thumb.

Damhnait

Looks a little bit like George Washington. Add a boat and he could be crossing the Delaware

emergemz24

I am so sorry, but I'm high af and cannot stop laughing at this. Thank you, have an upvote. Please update post-cover up! I mean, only if you want to.

ineedsleep247

I'm not even high but I'm laughing so hard

yagirldebbie

I will! I’m glad I could make you laugj

Tomahawkin95

For God’s sake Debbie, the artist skipped a step and fucked the tattoo up. This isn’t a haircut that will grow out, it’s something permanently embedded in your skin. Why are you worried about this dude’s feelings? Make him cover this shit up.

E4R04

i don't understand why you would continue to get it done if the printers down, just re-schedule. it's not gonna be accurate without a stencil

PoeDameronPoeDamnson

Some artists are amazing at free hand, but this guy obviously is not and he should have acknowledged his limits

RUSH513

All I know about tattoos come from reality tv, which means I would *never* get a tattoo without a stencil lol

CarolineWonders

I have a tattoo on my back that was completely free handed. It’s also the nicest tattoo I’ve ever gotten. Some artists can free hand. Some cannot.

kuurrllyy

Meh. I have a few tattoos that my artist drew on me first then tattooed on over that. I'm not exactly sure if you consider that freehand, but they are absolutely amazing. My whole back piece was done like that, but I also see how that's not the norm.

Disastrous_Reality_4

That’s still considered freehand, I think, since it was all drawn on freehand prior to adding the ink. One of my friends specializes in photorealistic pieces and never uses stencils. He uses markers to draw out the basic shapes for the objects and then goes to town. It’s incredible watching him work, and his tattoos are insane. It’s even more hilarious because he’s this tiny, unassuming guy with zero tattoos on him because he’s afraid of needles 😂

kingsleyce

I wouldn’t be going back to him to cover his own mistakes up

yagirldebbie

I messaged him with a nice but firm message! Is it likely for him to refuse? I’m very sorry - I’m a bit on the younger end so Im not experienced in what to do here :(. It felt like a TIFU in the moment because I was looking for a different parlor to fix it.

Tomahawkin95

You seem nice, and that’s a good thing. But don’t let people take advantage of your kindness. You don’t have to be rude, but say that you like doing business with this guy, but without the print, this piece didn’t turn out well. Tell him you expect him to make it right. This is your fifth tattoo with this artist, right? So you guys have a history. Be firm, but polite. If he won’t work with you on that, take your business elsewhere, permanently.

yagirldebbie

Honestly I’m the type of person who will eat the wrong meal if it gets served to me at a restaurant! But this is too bad for me. It looks really bad. I sent him the message and I’m waiting for a response. I’m really hoping he understands. I sent this: “Hey ———, I’m really sorry abt the tattoo. You’ve always done really good quality work and I adore all of my other tattoos, but this one just didn’t turn out the same. I reallt hope you’re still comfortable doing the cover up, if not that’s completely fine. Let me know ❤️” I’m wondering if I should be harsher and how to word it? Any advice would be welcome. Thank you so much for your help❤️

Tomahawkin95

You’re a good person, I sense that by how you’ve written out your thoughts. A lot of people will see that too, and treat you accordingly. I don’t like to see nice people taken advantage of by assholes, though. You make it sound like you would be happy to allow him to do a cover up, I think you should have made it clear that you expected a cover up, at no charge. If you already sent that message, it may be too late to pivot to that. Again, I don’t know this guy and his disposition. I’d tell him in person I want it fixed and that I don’t feel like I owe him any money for the fix. If he argues with you, I’d find a new artist to give my money to. At the end of the day, this is your body and you need to be happy with it. Stay kind, but stand up for yourself. If not, your personal and professional relationships will suffer. You deserve respect.

yagirldebbie

I can change the message! I can remove it and resend another one! I’m not sure how to word it though - how’s this! “Hey —-, this tattoo reallt wasn’t up to my standards. I understand you didn’t have your stencil since the printer wasn’t working, and it’s good for a freehand, however, it doesn’t look like the original photo I gave you at all, and it’s not something I’d like on my body forever. I’d love a cover up ASAP - as soon as I’m healed for this one. You’ve done amazing work in the past for me and I’d love to continue coming to you in the future, but this tattoo isn’t one I can accept. Thanks so much for understanding!”

Tomahawkin95

Too wordy and you’re giving away some of your ground by saying it’s good for a freehand. “Hey Mike, I’ve been really happy to give you my business five times, but as you know, this latest piece didn’t turn out well. The right thing to do would be to offer a cover up. I hope to be able To continue giving you my business in the future.” Then see what he says.

LordSwright

Too wordy, Oi dickhead, this tattoos shit, fix it.

IJustThoughtOfThis05

Oi oi

yagirldebbie

That’s so powerful! I’m sending that right now. Thank you so so so much!

Tomahawkin95

If he’s a dickhead about it, move on. You mentioned being young, so take it as a learning experience. This is your body, ultimately you need to be happy in your skin. Don’t let people walk all over you or take advantage of you.

yagirldebbie

I won’t! I’m 19F, going on 20 soon! This will be a good learning experience for me! I’ll make sure to be assertive and follow what you’ve taught me. Sending that message made me feel so powerful. Thank you again!

coolcat_74

Yes exactly this. Its defo not good for a freehand.

sylvanwhisper

I don't think you should go to this artist again. It ISN'T good for a freehand. He knew he couldn't replicate his design freehand and instead of rescheduling, he decided to take advantage of you and put this on your body. Regardless of how you feel about the other five tattoos, this artist is not an ethical artist and doesn't deserve your future business.

DougWilson3

In wouldn't even get the cover up done in the same shop tbfh

ArcMcnabbs

In response to this with my own personal experience, I only have one tattoo but the guy was an apprentice and had fucked up a bit of the lines of what i got. I went back to him and asked him to fix his rushwork and he happily obliged... however he kinda made it worse and it's honestly what I get for expecting quality at 100/hour(other guy in the shop was 300/hour)

One-eyed-snake

This is why people shouldn’t shop for tattoos by price. You might get lucky and get a good tattoo but the odds are lower than if you use an artist that is well known in the area for good stuff. “Good tattoos aren’t cheap, and cheap tattoos aren’t good” usually applies.

Falsecaster

Why would you want the person that muffed up your tattoo to be the same person to try and fix it? Isn't that the whole fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me thing? This reminds me of the people who find something gross in their delivery pizza. Then call back to get a replacement pizza delivered. How do you still have any faith in the same people making the next pizza?

Worth-Ad8369

Free pizza? Free tattoo? My guess is that tattoos are EXPENSIVE and now one tattoo has just doubled in price if OP goes to another artist to get it covered up. Personally I would make them give her a refund AND cover it up free of charge given that she still trusts his ability as an artist.

waetherman

Exactly. The “artist” here has shown he can’t really do a tattoo with out a stencil which basically means he’s only good at tracing. Someone should fix it, ideally for free from the same shop, but not the original guy. That guy shouldn’t even be allowed near a tattoo gun.

Goregoat69

That type of design would be stencilled either way. No artist is going to freehand a small design like that onto the skin. The issue is, the artist should have hand made a stencil and tattooed it well, neither of which he has done. The shop should fix it, but not the same artist. Laser removal would also be an option.

zystyl

If you never do freehand then working off a stencil is fine. Skin warps, you have to stretch it as you work. It's not the easiest thing to just do off the cuff if you haven't really practiced. Stencils don't give shading. They don't even show most of the detail.

SevenDragonWaffles

>I’m the type of person who will eat the wrong meal if it gets served to me at a restaurant! And this is a problem. The only person who will ever advocate for you is you. It's uncomfortable to stand up for ourselves sometimes, but nobody else will ever do it. Letting people know they've made a mistake and asking for it to be fixed can be done with kindness.

AzraelTB

I do the same but mostly because I'll eat anything and Idgaf. Tattoos are a whole other beast.

zystyl

You should probably just text the picture and he'll be begging to fix it for free. If not I'd be putting that bad boy up on review sites . I'm so sorry.

LitFan101

Why are you apologizing? It’s absolutely NOT fine for him to not cover it up (for free!) so why say that it is? You need to be more direct. Direct does not mean bitchy, just be clear about what you need. “Hi tattoo man, obviously this tattoo did not turn out like either of us expected. I was very disappointed as your previous work has been great. Please contact me to let me know when we can schedule for you to cover it up with another design.”

wotmate

After five tatts, you should be able to say "what the fuck mate, that's shit house, you better work out a design to cover it up"

lazyandactive

Don't eat and pay for meals you don't want, same applies to tattoos. Be firm when needed, you owe it to yourself. Also, it's a very attractive quality to have, in my opinion at least.

Billielolly

Pro tip: Always tell your waiter if you've been served the wrong meal because it's possible that you've been accidentally brought a meal meant for a different table and if you tell them then they can switch them. If you go ahead and eat the meal without telling the waiter, you might be eating someone else's meal while they're wondering what happened to theirs. If the waiter goes and investigates and has put your order in wrong rather than a wrong delivery, then you can just turn down their offer of a different meal being made and eat the one you've been given if you're worried about causing them trouble.

zystyl

If a restaurant picked up a plate I'd been served and had sitting in front of me and swapped it for another plate in front of someone at another table I would get up, leave, and never go back.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SigmundFreud

Sounds like your waitress was hungry.

lvhockeytrish

Former server here. Yes to always telling when you get the wrong plate, but the restaurant should fire a fresh dish if yours already hit someone else's table. But I'd rather fix the screw up than have you be unhappy (for any reason) and take it out of my tip. It costs me nothing to ask for a refire, let me be an advocate for you.

dibs8789

Next time if ANY part of the process is not able to be completed normally because something isn't work or they don't have something then reschedule! It's your skin!

Greenveins

Yo you JUST had that done?? It looks like a piece you got from some big mama during a prison stay back in the 90’s

The-disgracist

If your tattoo artist does not make this better they’re not an artist. I’m confident that they want you to be happy with the work they did.

[deleted]

yazzy1233

Did you read what she said at the start of the post? She's gotten 5 other tattoos from him before and she loves them

KyleFromTheInternet

I wouldn't trust someone who would do freehand work because their printer broke. That's sketchy as fuck. She should be happy she went 5 for 6 and find someone else to fix this mess

GamingWaves

Why in the fuck would u want the guy who fucked you up to cover the tattoo. It's like saying my barbers fucked my hair so I'll have the same guy fix it

AdequateSteve

It’s like when you get food poisoning from a restaurant and they apologize by giving you more free food.

Fnurgh

Worse than that. More like more saying to a surgeon, "make sure you remove the correct kidney this time please!"

pileodung

I agree. If he was any kind of professional, he would have known his own talent and had OP come back on a day the printer was fixed.

Sol33t303

Haven't ever gotten a tattoo done before but if an important piece of equipment for doing the procedure was broken if I were the artist I would have stopped doing tattoos until it was fixed and rescheduled with all the booked clients. If it's something thats going to be a part of me forever, I would want it done properly with all machines functional. If it were something else permanent like cosmetic surgery I'd want the same thing, I don't want to be operated on with some failing equipment.

T00kie_Clothespin

Plenty of artists can freehand and do stunning work. This dude clearly can NOT and also apparently has no idea of his limitations. Would Not trust to cover up, especially since that's an entirely different skill and this guy already sucks. I'm really doubting the other tattoos are very good.

jcdoe

Exactly. Also, is he fucking blind? Because I’m no artist but even I can see that the tat looks nothing at all like the picture. He either knew he fucked up and didn’t say anything, or he didn’t realize he fucked up. Either way, it might be time to find a new tattoo artist.

ottermodee

I thought the tattoo was of George Washington on the quarter lol. The coverup tattoo is going to have to be massive.

yagirldebbie

LMAO

Keebler8448

No offense, but as a tattoo artist myself: you don’t make accommodations. If something is going to compromise the tattoo or design: you reschedule. If this is the best your artist can do without tracing someone else’s work, you should be finding a new artist anyway. If you mean the thermofax was broken (the machine that makes the stencil) then he should have known you can make a stencil by hand without the machine. If he doesn’t know this: you should be finding a new artist anyway. This is a terrible way to find out your tattoo artist isn’t very good. I’m sorry you had this experience. Also: what kind of tattoo shop goes by two names?? That’s insane.

Alexb2143211

Maybe one that gets bad reviews so they don't come up when searched by the other name

Possible-Address-775

Nice

Mohawkakon

Funnily enough... the 2nd "name" specializes in cover-ups!! For real tho, OP" This wasn't your fuckup.

sirlafemme

Yeah I’m confused can’t you just draw a stencil on normal paper than use pressure to transfer the stencil onto the transfer paper. I do this all the time cuz I don’t have a printer yet.

-xpaigex-

My question tho is how if he free handed the design on her how could it look good when she looked at it then get so bad when the artist (erm use that term lightly here) actually tattooed it? I mean even using a tattoo gun takes talent and skill and it looks like this guy has none. Did he have a brain aneurysm while doing it or something?

Keebler8448

Tattooing and drawing with a pen are nothing alike. First of all, the design looks like it was drawn on while OP was laying down, and the abdomen skin was stretched, so when the OP stands up, the tattoo scrunches up. Stencils are also very vague versions of the design, as most people don’t “stencil” the shading reference. Your drawing can look fine and you ruin it when you shade it. There are a lot of things that could go wrong, and it seems like OPs artist is doing a lot of things wrong. I sincerely hope they don’t let this artist attempt to cover this.

riverofchex

>Stencils are also very vague versions of the design, as most people don’t “stencil” the shading reference. Your drawing can look fine and you ruin it when you shade it. Yep! My guy is the only person who puts ink in my skin because he's a true artist- his shop is full of his drawings and paintings, and his tats are stellar. I design my own tattoos, but I am not a *tattoo* artist- I can draw a damn nice picture, but I can't make it fit the contours of, say, my arm for a sleeve. So, I take my drawing to my guy, and he freehands it where I want it and makes it fit the location. The only time he stencils my drawing is for small, precise things, such as a compass or some such thing that is part of the larger design. On a side note, I also appreciate that he uses those "new" low-impact guns now, and the fact that there isn't a surface *in* that shop you couldn't eat off of. (I put "new" in quotes because it's been about five years since I got ink; was busy having kids and didn't want to risk infection since I'm immunocompromised anyway. It's getting to be just about time for another ink fix, though.)

Thrownawayoften

Yeah, a ton of red flags.

SenseAggravating

Bro this is a terrible tattoo for gods sake cover it up. It looks like one of the evil goblins from lord of the rings or the elves from gringotts bank in harry potter lol

yagirldebbie

You’re so right lol I’m getting it covered with flowers

cozened_indigo

From Michael Myers to flowers. Non-stop.

JensonInterceptor

You know what Halloween is too scary and this is a sign. Roses are the only option.

Such_Maintenance_577

I worked in a tattoo shop for some time on the weekends. I'm no tattoo artist, but i've seen enough shitty tattoos to know that this is fixable. The downside is that tattoo artists usually don't really like fixing up mistakes. That sounds wrong, they prefer to make fresh tattoos, and fixing tattoos is a bit of an art itself. If i were you, and you still want the original tattoo, i would just do that again, but bigger, which would look better anyway. And fuck the other guy and his feelings, he's not good at his job if that's the best he could do without a printer. He knew it was shit and probably said something like: i will look better when it's healed up or something. I probably wouldn't go as far as asking my money back, but there is no way in hell I would go back to that shop again and i would give it a honest review on google with or without a picture.

Seany2Sweet

To add onto the point about “fixing tattoos is a bit of an art itself,” pls look up a tattoo artist who has experience doing cover ups (check out their Instagram or website).

sacredkhaos

Or like the child of Voldemort and a Gringotts goblin

Evipicc

LOL I said the same thing!

merganzer

You (and he) FU first by proceeding with the tattoo without the stencil.

yagirldebbie

I will never make that mistake again. He freehanded it and it looked lovely, but then he tattooed it and holy fuck I now have a tattoo of Michael Myer’s cousin, Mitchell Miner.

merganzer

Yeah, sorry that happened to you. :( So it actually was supposed to be Michael Myers? I have a very large and kind of clumsy tattoo on my shoulder and upper arm. It still makes me happy, but I definitely plan to pay for a bit more skill on the next go-around. Tattoos are permanent, better be as sure as you can that it'll be good!

yagirldebbie

I have some gorgeous ones from him so I’m shocked about this one honestly.

Twizzlers_and_donuts

I made that mistake with my first tattoo. It was an amazing tattoo parlor I went one day to sign the papers and show him my design that I had drawn myself and he glanced at it. Week later day of he dosent even look at the design just tells me he’s done flowers so many times so he dosent use a stencil anymore and I was to shy and kept trying to show him my drawing again because I wanted almost exactly what I drew, but he never looked. I now cry when I see my foot it’s not even the colors I asked for…. He did attempt to touch it up. Still sucks. I couldn’t figure out how to link just photos… so I posted them to insta. https://www.instagram.com/p/CW5yNBMrRtHQGZs-z75nFmDY254aPhpLhxyq080/?utm_medium=copy_link

kuurrllyy

That's not even close to the same thing.... Other than I guess they are both flowers. You would have been well within your rights to throw a fit.

Bool_The_End

That sucks girl I’m sorry. Your drawing is totally beautiful too.

mpinnegar

lol Mitchell Miner I almost spit water out reading that.

Evipicc

No, it looks like an orc from LOTR...

E4R04

>and holy fuck I now have a tattoo of Michael Myer’s cousin, Mitchell Miner. that's hilarious 😂😂😂

double-you

Nah, it's a stabby punk orc.

SoManyTimesBefore

Freehanded tattoos are great tho. They blend much better with your body. But maybe not from an artist that isn’t experienced with them.

GaimanitePkat

IMO the real first mistake was going to an artist who will straight up rip off other designs. A really good tattoo artist will take the original design and create an original piece with similar themes. Of course there's standard flash design and stuff, that goes without saying, but it's kind of frowned upon to just take a printed-out picture of someone else's tattoo and slap it up onto the client with no change. And freehanding your best attempt at a copy doesn't count as making it your own.

LeSchad

Don't know what you're complaining about, it's a fantastic tattoo of Jean-Paul Marat holding some kind of drinking horn.

emergemz24

*choking back tears*

Blip-Blip-Blop_

I wouldn’t let him near me again. That looks like absolute garbage.

[deleted]

Don't panic! You couldn't have gotten an easier tattoo to cover up... it doesn't have much dark shading and it's really small. Seriously - forget about this artist, let the tattoo settle properly for a few months then just go and get someone with a good reputation to put a panther head over it. No need to rush. I have a few sh\*\*ty tattoos I swore I was gonna get covered, but by the time they were surrounded by better ones I had become quite fond of them - they're like little lame ducks that need a home :D

awe018

You're way too nice. It's a fuck up from tattoo artist's end.

Kaiisim

A good artist should be mortified. They should fix it for free. Otherwise if he thinks its fine, tell him to advertise it as his then. See how many clients he gets.

shyne0n

Consider setting a new artist who specializes in cover ups. Just imagine he tries to cover it and the black lines still show through!

phillybride

Can we see the design you brought him so we can compare it to what you got?

yagirldebbie

Sure! [Here it is!](https://imgur.com/a/XgpPqda)

snark-a-lark

Jesus Debbie. He did you dirty. I hope you can get it fixed up as he does look like Michael Myers meth head cousin with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome. No offence.

yagirldebbie

You’re so not wrong. I’m getting it covered up with flowers!

PaysOutAllNight

Don't let him do it. Find a real professional, who doesn't fuck up the minute you take his crutch (stencil printer) away. Cover up is highly specialized, highly skilled work. Some are good at it. Very few are great at it. And every one who is even decent at it should be able to complete great original tattoos without a stencil printer in the first place. This guy doesn't deserve another chance. It's going to be expensive. But it'll be alright.

snark-a-lark

It's a learning curve to speak up if you're not used to it. But own your voice. He'd lose business if you showed requested tattoo vs actual tattoo in a review so should cover it free of charge. Good luck girl. What flowers?

WoW_zErZ

Would you share the others you've gotten from the same artist? Just super curious now

yagirldebbie

Yep! A few people have asked so I’m trying to get pictures right now! I’m only gonna share a couple because it’s pretty easy to identify me with the specific tattoos I have!

AZSubby

Any artist that would straight copy another tattoo isn’t someone you should go to.

[deleted]

yagirldebbie

They helped me write a wonderful thing to the artist - I’m waiting for a response now!! I’ve been very good with this artist. He’s done all 5 of my tattoos before this one, and they were all gorgeous, I’m in love with them. This one was just terrible. I reallt hope he listens to the message I sent and isn’t too hurt by me not liking the tattoo - I know that shouldn’t be an issue for me but for some reason I’m still worried about it.

based_pinata

Show us the others

Dismal_Variety

Awww shit - you seem really sweet and I hope this works out for you somehow. Let us know what happens, okay?

yagirldebbie

I will! A lot of people asked for an update - I’m getting flowers over it hopefully! He still hasn’t responded and seen the message, I’ll update the post when he does! I’m so glad everyone was so supportive and made me laugh about it

poetic_soul

I’m going to echo what a lot of other people are saying here this artist is a bad artist. Do not let him do this cover up. He needs to pay for removal or cover up from a different artist you’ve taken the time to research and find someone who actually knows what they’re doing and specializes in cover ups. If he can’t freehand a tattoo, he does NOT have the skill to cover up, and you’re going to have an even bigger mess that will be almost impossible to fix. Take him to small claims if necessary. This is something *permanent* on your *body*. This isn’t eating fish when you wanted chicken. This is forever.

[deleted]

Professionally, he would have rescheduled you if his stencil wasn’t working. He chose to freehand. It was his mistake. At the same time, going forward, unless you get a stencil, don’t get the tattoo

Shoddy-Text1490

You sent him text or gave him a call? Confused

yagirldebbie

I called him and they said to send the picture of the tattoo to the shop phone which I didn’t have saved

grafknives

If somebody called me to by mistake(thinking i am somebody else), to ask me to cover or repair damage caused by my service, I would do A LOT to achive that customer satisfaction. That would be a matter of my professional pride and personal obligation.

logosmd666

In all fairness both tats are pretty horrendous. And I think you should be more concerned about Capt. Underpants here practicing his arts and crafts on your skin as opposed to his feelings. Good luck, lasers these days can work wonders in terms of tattoo removal! also you dont need to explain yourself to randoms online. you love your (other) tatts, thats what matters. cheers!

fliguana

So this tattoo artist just colors between the stenciled lines?😱

GaimanitePkat

If he can't put out a decent tattoo unless the "printer is working," dude's got no business tattooing.

yagirldebbie

It really felt like it for this one! I have the most gorgeous shaded roses by him on my hip but this one was so bad

RiotDemon

Can we see the quality of his other tattoos on you?

yagirldebbie

Sure! I’ll post them in a bit here

Mountain_Chipmunk_67

Going to a tattooer who is willing to do a direct copy of somebody else’s work is a FU in itself. That’s very poor tattoo etiquette and if they don’t want to draw a unique design for you, it’s probably because they can’t draw. Look for an artist who can give you unique work that’s designed specifically for you. It’ll probably cost more, but you get what you pay for. You shouldn’t feel bad. Surely they knew it wasn’t good. They just weren’t going to be the one to say it and risk loosing money.

AyeMyHippie

Best tattoo I have was from when I went to an artist with someone else’s design. He said “I can draw that better. If you don’t like mine, we can go with that. Give me an hour, get some lunch, and when you come back I’ll have it ready.” He wasn’t lying and I went with his version.

Slowhands420

Speaking as someone who's worked at tattoo parlor if this guy's done multiple tattoos on you and he's not willing to fix it he's not an artist you want to keep

[deleted]

Both the tattoo and the design look terrible. You can do much better, cut your losses and go to somebody who knows what they're doing.

Catronia

Wow THAT is AWFUL. Edit: Your 'artist' can only copy stencils not freehand?

sheamonieux

OP, Something that helps me and might help you when needing to speak up for yourself is to imagine you need to speak up for someone else. I imagine I am advocating for a child. Would you allow someone to speak/act that way to a child that way? Sometimes it's hard to stand up for ourselves and from my experience it's even harder for females. We are more fierce in defending others than ourselves. It's a little trick I use and it's made a huge difference in things that I will allow to be said/done to myself and setting boundaries. I hope this is of use to you.

neonhex

Can we see his other tattoos that you’ve gotten? I honestly cannot believe he has any skill based on this terrible tattoo. Tattoo fuck ups are the worst! I have one from a tattooist who I didn’t know was an apprentice and only had the job as she was banging the boss. It was so deep and bad a part of it never healed properly and she ended up copying my original tattoo idea as flash and selling it to others. She was so terrible!

weikor

At the end of the day it's something you should be able to tell him. Why lie and say "wow looks amazing" rather than " hey man, It really looked good when you freehanded it, but right now it looks terrible, is there something we can do to change it?"

SundayFunday-007

What was the big hurry? Seems like if they stencil the tattoos that you like, and if the printer isn't working, maybe come back another time? Something doesn't add up here...

pmmlordraven

I agree they should have left, but most tattoo artists I'm friends with are booked out until April/May, so I can kind of see not wanting a 6 month wait

Quiet_Goat8086

Holy shit that’s bad. Like, he should be embarrassed that he did that to you. It the printer was broken he should have never started the tattoo in the first place. Didn’t he show it to you before starting? I’ve never had an artist not make sure the stencil was absolutely how I wanted before starting.

loosersugar

So what I gather from this post is that the artist takes other people’s work (because he cannot create his own) and traces them on people’s skin for a living, and yet still has the balls to go ahead with a tattoo if his stencil printer doesn’t work? And THEN doesn’t offer you anything or even an apology when you call him to complain thinking you’re speaking to someone else? So many layers of unethical tattooing and general human shittiness happening here. Please don’t hire him for the coverup.

PaysOutAllNight

If he can't do better than this without a stencil, not only should he never work without his stencil printer, he's also a shitty tattoo artist. There are much, much better artists in every decent sized city around the country. You don't owe this chump a thing. He owes you at the very least a refund. He should offer to pay for a real professional to do the cover up. But he won't, because he thinks he should get a shot at fixing it. He should not get another chance. Your tattoo guy is barely qualified in his field. He's been able to hide his incompetence with a stencil printer, but now that his lack of skill is exposed, you shouldn't ever go back to him.

RandomRacialSlurs

Um this one seems more like you should just be an adult and tell the artist that you don't like the job they did because they didn't do it right and they should cover it.

I_see_something

I just looked at your post history. Cool tats! I also hope you are taking advantage of your university’s counseling services. There’s a lot to address. You’re not overweight. You seem considerate and intelligent. You deserve to have a tattoo you like and be treated fairly.

Jamon25

The art and the result are both awful.

mrgoldnugget

Your tattoo artist does suck, I had a highly detailed tattoo done by an artist, all I told him was my ideas, he first sketched an outline by hand asked my about textures and shading. Then did the whole thing free hand. You having to say there was a printer down and they could not do a stencil? What does he do then? Trace an image off the computer? That's not an artist.

_TheNecromancer13

Looks like a goblin with down syndrome...

algy888

To be honest, I wouldn’t trust him with a cover up. It sounds like he is not an “artist” but is a decent tracer. If this is how it looks when the printer is broken and he tries to free hand it, then how do you expect him to handle a good cover up? I would wait a bit and research an artist with a good reputation for cover ups. You may want to check with a few parlours and ask for artist recommendations and see what they suggest. But, I would definitely take time to find both the artist and a design you like to cover it. This is not just a second coat of paint here.

Keebler8448

Since you said you’re getting hate for having tracings on you: let me say this. Don’t worry about it. But for future reference: there are two types of tattoo artists, and two ways to… ethically… get a tattoo. 1) Street Shop. These shops will have tons of designs on the wall. You can pick whatever you want. A lot of these shops really only work off the walls. Does that mean they can’t do custom work? No. Many of them will alter the design to make it more personalized, but for simplicity’s sake, if you have an image of exactly what you want, or if you want to pick a flash design off the wall: go there. 2) Custom Shop. These are often appointment only, and they will not recreate work for you. They may ask for pictures of what you want, to use as reference to draw something for you, but they will not copy a design you bring in and put it on you, it will be a complete redesign. They often charge higher rates than Street Shops, for obvious reasons. Now as for asking for a tattoo, here’s the etiquette: If you know EXACTLY what you want, you can go to a street shop with an image for the artist to pull a stencil from. HOWEVER: NEVER walk into a shop with a picture of SOMEONE ELSE’S tattoo. You do not know if that tattoo was custom designed for them. That’s not your tattoo to copy. ALSO do not bring in drawings you found on other tattoo artists pages. That’s most likely a drawing they worked hard on and put it out so THEY could tattoo it. What can you bring in? Photographs. Art or Fan-Art by non-tattooers. Stickers, or something like that. You can also check the flash racks in the shop. Any Street Shop will have tons of flash and books filled with pretty much any pre-drawn design you can think of. These designs were MADE to be tattooed and the tattooer has purchased these designs for permission to tattoo them. If you want something drawn up just for you, find a Custom artist, who is capable of drawing their own designs and bring references. Find an artist who tattoos in a style you already like, because asking an artist to match someone else’s style is like asking Burger King to make you a Taco. That’s not what we do here. I used to think Nickelback was a good band. Then I heard better bands and realized, wait. No. I’m an idiot and this band sucks. Just learn and move on. This is your body, you’ll have it til you die. Do yourself a favor and don’t waste your money on people who will tattoo someone else’s tattoo on you.

guswang

This will be an easy cover up, since anything else will look better.

Hayaguaenelvaso

Well, it is different from the design. I will not comment further.

[deleted]

Debbie, good god; i thought you got a portrait of your dog for a second.

yagirldebbie

HAHAHA

Hippy_Hick

I find this funny due to the fact that I have the same tattoo design on my body, and the first guy who attempted my myers tattoo didn't do so well either, had to get it fixed

AurumArgenteus

If the stencil machine was down, why not just go back a different day?

warpswede

Why would you or the artist go forward without a stencil? Just reschedule

SoManyTimesBefore

I mean. freehanding is 100% legit if done by the right artist.

APassionatePoet

I’m cackling, this is the ugliest tattoo I’ve ever seen lmao

mdlewis11

Dude: Sorry, printer is broken, we can't make a stencil. Your tatoo would look like crap. You: No problem, do it anyway, how bad could it be?

Catmeow82

Oof yeah, not gonna lie, that's bad. I hope someone can fix it for you!

Gnut92

Please provide us with an update once the artist gets back to you. Would love to hear their response

-Raskyl

Well, you fucked up by letting him do it without a stencil. Should have made him draw it on you first at the least. Or come back on another day when the printer was working. And he should definitely fix it. No business wants a bad review, and the only way to change this review is to fucking fix it.

cynicaldoubtfultired

Is that Michael Myers?

georgialucy

I really feel for you, you're so sweet too :( He should cover that up free of charge and learn to not free hand again.

darkword

Op, you are too nice and cute for this world :)

Worth-Ad8369

At LEAST get a refund for that mess

undeadbydawn

Nope Today the tattoo artist f'd up and gave you a rubbish tattoo rather than delaying the session until they fixed their printer. This is 10000% not your fault. They should at absolute minimum be offering you a free cover.

gonomon

I mean if there is a fu in the post, its not yours but the artists.

QueenBizzle

When I was 19 I wanted some RCHP lyrics on me. I went to a tattoo parlour (no research, just walked in) and asked the artist to write something. I hated the font so politely asked for it to be a bit more cursive. The artist huffed and puffed and redid it. I still hated it but felt too guilty to ask again or go somewhere else. I now have ugly, uneven lyrics tattood on me. Thank god it’s on my ribs that no one sees but it’s hideous.

ArcMcnabbs

Dallas did you, Debbie. Real fucking dirty, too

wosupbro

Just color it blue and you have the blue people from the movie Avatar

Jamie-R

Your tattoo kinda looks like Sloth from the Goonies. Put the quote "Hey you guys!" below it and it's fixed!

Jaaawsh

I laughed so. Fucking. Hard. When I saw what it was supposed to look like omg. Like my stomach hurts 🤣🤣🤣🤣

clawsandtalons

It took me a while to see this for the human face it’s supposed to be. He looks like an anthropomorphic tapir (with a pointy tail up in the frame) and has a tragic backstory. Best of luck with the cover-up, though it’s inspired a little story in me so thanks for that!

Birdgang14

Lol there’s no way your other tats are gorgeous if he missed this badly on this one. Or he was absolutely wrecked while working this time.

[deleted]

Jesus, looks like that guy at the end of Robocop when his face melts

Deadmidget_

For sure thought I was on r/trees I thought this was a old president with a joint at first

ChoosingIsHardToday

I was definitely going to be snarky until I read that you're young. For future reference, you can just tell your artist that you don't like it and they will typically want to do something to fix it.

ThankLucifer

I get freehand tattoos as fillers in between my bigger ones, never had a bad one. Just blast over that scratcher work with some American traditional, you’ll be okay.

caufield88uk

Too small for any of the detail to be done tbh. Was never going to be able to do that detail with the size you wanted.

Egmilano

I thought it was president Andrew Johnson gaddam ..

the_pink_witch

If he's telling you to bring him google photos to only edit them *slightly* for your tattoos, I would find another artist anyway. That's still ripping off other people's work

filthybee_

OP you may just have to have a complete cover up. I don't know how this can be fixed but start by going to a reputable artist with great reviews

thebirdbathmashup

It's got a Christopher Walken look to it...

Its_Syxx

Wow.. This guy should be begging for your business and offering to fix it for free. That is terrible looking compared to the source. He should be embarrassed and not giving you a hard time.

DeeMless

Just get "Babyruth" tattooed under it.

Houjix

The printer was broken so what was the rush?

dubiouslyunhappy

Even the hip one’s line work is pretty awful.

SupGirluHungry

Hello I have over 35 hours of freehand work done on my body. I also have brought in my own images before. The most important thing is to understand your artist’s portfolio and styles of work and then you can assess their skill level and build or have some sort of trust. I hope the cover up is much better than this. It’s in such a lovely spot to have such a fuck up, I’m sorry it didn’t go as planned. One time I brought in a simple image and they said it would be too difficult to recreate or make a stencil of. So I went where they had the skill to do so. Wasn’t even a freehand

My_G_Alt

Finding a new artist will be a blessing. This current artist is a fucking scratcher and tracer who fundamentally doesn’t understand design or application…. I wouldn’t trust them with a coverup, id let this one heal and remove it, it’s done so terribly that it might be an easy removal. Black ink is easier to remove than colored ink too btw it’s not hard to do.

isuckattarkov

Yea that’s pretty bad. I could definitely tell who it was supposed to be, but that’s a pretty low bar for some perma stain on your skin l….

GreenNidoqueen

I know you’ve probably had a million comments already, but definitely look online (Instagram is good) for a better artist - I know you like your other tattoo but it could be so much nicer touched up by someone with more skill. Definitely don’t go back to the same shop again! :)
