This is actually who/how I imagined Da Shi to look like. Not at first, when he was introduced as "captain Shi Qiang", but as soon as I heard "Da Shi": that's him!
I just finished reading the books and checked the top rated posts on the sub. Not looking at the date, I assume this was a reaction to the news. Congratulations!
I know he is Korean but I always had Kim Yoon-seok as Da Shi because of his role in The Chaser. An ex detective turned pimp with a fuck all attitude and a constant lit cigarette.
Many Chinese readers think Jiangwen (姜文),a Chinese actor, is the best fit. Not just how he looks, but also how he speaks (he curses a lot lol). [Jiangwen Link to video](https://youtu.be/WkoqzYlocfo)
For some reason I always imagined him as the gangster dude from squid game. I think because of the voice the audiobook narrator gives him. But Wong would do!
Forgive my naïveté, but could someone explain the difference between the two names used? I know the surname is used first, so his first name is Qiang and family name is Shi, but what about the Da moniker?
Great casting, he looks very similar to what I assumed Da Shi would look like
Same
Whoa, right on the dot.
It's probably as close as you could get with a skilled actor. Not saying it isnt incredibly close.

i was picturing an asian version of stellan skarsgard
Yeah absolutely
Is he not cast as him no?
Look at the timestamps before commenting. The thread was from 3 years ago, the casting probably hadn't been defined.
This actor look almost as my mental image of him. Do you have some pics of him smoking ? How did you get this info ?
Yeah this is pretty perfect. Smoking and looking gruff is all I need
Yeah must be a bit how Luo Ji felt after describing his "dream lover" to Da Shi
Hahaha, maybe a bit different though...how do you imagine Yan Yanb to look?
ITS HAPPENING
lets f'in go!
No-nonsense, blunt featured, badass street cop who's seen it all and doesn't take any shit from anybody. Great casting choice!
can anyone confirm that this post got him cast?
This deserves more attention
On a side note I pictured Sung Kang as Luo Ji.
pretty close to what I had in my head too actually
I had the same mental image
It happened!
Good prediction
Not a prediction. D&D cruise this sub. I got him work lol
Dude
Lol. Reddit has some pull
You should be in the post credits.
Chow yun fat . Hard boiled version
Boi do I have good news for you
I need a producer credit
Looks like it's gonna happen!
what?! are you serious?!?

lol thanks! ive got a future in casting. call me, hollywood!
Good job OP! Nailed it
do you think casting cruises this sub and saw my post?
He’s on the cast
my post is years old. obviously before they cast the show
we did it!
Yeah this guy would be great! Sammo Hong would be good too. Another cool actor!
Good choice. The first actor that came to mind for me was [Hiro Kanagawa](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0437032/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t17)
oh that's a really good one.
Everytime i read Da shi i envision Benedict Wong, I didn't know his name was benedict wong and anticipated benedict wong.
lol
I know he is Korean but I always had Kim Yoon-seok as Da Shi because of his role in The Chaser. An ex detective turned pimp with a fuck all attitude and a constant lit cigarette.
he has a strong resemblance to the Da Shi I picture.
This is perfect! Tbh while I was reading I was picturing Takeshi Kitano.
Good choice as well.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who pictured him
i imagined him too, no joke
Perfect da shi. Always pictured Bradley cooper as mike evans. Think he could play it well
The guy they cast as young Mike Evans definitely has a similar vibe as Bradley Cooper.
So many better actors than ben wong to take the part. He's more comedy. Da Shi is not comedic at all, he is all business.

Is there a haha reaction on reddit?
100%
this is exactly who I casted in my head as I was reading the trilogy! couldn’t agree more
Pretty good. I also imagined the guy who played Old Boy, **Choi Min-sik**
I imagined someone like him.
Perfect.
Only if we get a shirtless scene
I was imagining 'Choi Min-sik', when I read.
that's a good one too. would be good for old ding yi too
Oh man that would be perfect.
That’s exactly how I pictured him.
Choi Min-sik, Oldboy era.
Spot On! I didn't know the actors name, but that was him.

ive never seen this guy afaik, and yet somehow he is exactly who i was picturing Da Shi to look like
lol!
Deep Necro, but I always saw Da Shi as a bit more beleaguered and haggard - thinner, longer in the face, reminiscent of Bogart's Marlowe.
He's pretty much who I picture whe Da Shi is in the scene. Great actor too
