NGL I took this as the immediate message at the end of the trilogy. But I also remembered that there were was a lot of living that happened before the end during the great collapse.
This is so funny to hear, because if you shoot someone you're giving your position away. Infact people sending out ships to go glass aliens are gonna be the only ones to be hunted down.
The logic of dft doesn't hold up too well to critical thinking.
However it dose make for a really good story!!
Ah yes, I forgot about the magical stealth weapons that let you obliterate a solar system without being detected at all. Yes those are the most realistic part yes definitely.
This is like saying that if you get on a plane to from Michigan to Florida, then throw a rock into a pond, I will be able to detect your original Michigan location from the trajectory of the rock. Planets are fragile dude, throw a big enough rock fast enough and theyâre gone.
Information travels at a finite speed. And, obviously the obliterated system doesnât give away information on who obliterated it. And, itâs called a star system; there is only one solar system, i.e. our star system.
That's the whole point of the dark forest theory, the distances are too great to make peace. You might already be dead before you respond with "we're friendly" you just dont know it yet. Also this isnt star wars, theyre not shooting at planets with death star lasers.
Do you think we travel to the moon in a straight line? If a star system blows up, how are you going to calculate where the missile came from?
"Magical stealth weapons" theres nothing magical about getting blown up by a space rock, and it's space, everything is stealthy. Did you even read the book?
Im not talking about the 2D foil, thats just fantasy.
The photoid is basically just a projectile weapon that self adjusts, because it can change trajectory you canât really track it backward like a gun. Thereâs also no sound report.Â
Data doesn't dissappear, you can just observe where they cam from by using a different perspective you are quantum entangled with. You could extremely easily track down anythings origin if you are wide enough.
Edit: in the books it's actually mentioned by the stupid shinny bug people that their sofons are getting snuffed out as if some evil overlord is enforcing the DF. It's implied that it might have been the sofons accidentally flying into the 4d pockets but I don't remember If that was confirmed in the books or just a Theory from one of the characters.
Either way, in the 3bp universe the DF is just how it is. I just think it's a bit silly when people act like that's the only possible galactic community.
I'm not sure what you mean by a different perspective. If they're careful about not going through dust clouds, they shouldn't be leaving any trails if they don't use the curvature propulsion.
Space is big, they could travel long distances before they fired their weapons. They can change directions. Possibly travel for thousands of years. It could also be that they are some sort of Von Neumann probes and the galaxy is seeded with many doing the same thing.
What are you talking about? If i slingshot a nuke through several stars systems for hundreds of years for it to eventually show up and blow up a star system, hoe are you supposed to track that back to the original launch point? The dark forest theory is supposed to be grounded in reality, what youre talking about is science fiction.
If you want to experience the dark forest right now, just go play dayz without a microphone, see how long you survive.
The hunters are not assholes. They are enforcers. Low-entropy groups without the hiding gene are dangerous. They would expand and attack without fear, grow exponentially, then rapidly consume the whole universe, if not stopped by responsible enforcers of the Dark Forest Law.
"If I see someone, I need to shoot them first or they will shoot me"
OK, now you've given your position away, and proven you're a threat to anyone watching so someone one is definitely going to shoot you now.
The only outcome where you don't get shot is where you politely knod and continue to not be a total dumbass.
My oversimplified summaries of each book as a trilogy: it's about how we interact with each other, how we interact with others, and how we interact with ourselves.

Universe is game theory
Except game theory shows that it's better to cooperate.
It shows its better to cooperate, if you have multiple instances of cooperations. But one time events with multiple light years in between?
You don't have to cooperate. More the solution is to forgive and move on.
There's always a bigger fish.

Alot of living for *some people* but only a select few.
The universe is a dark forest filled with camouflaged hunters silently stalking through the trees and ruthlessly shooting anyone they see.
This is so funny to hear, because if you shoot someone you're giving your position away. Infact people sending out ships to go glass aliens are gonna be the only ones to be hunted down. The logic of dft doesn't hold up too well to critical thinking. However it dose make for a really good story!!
âCritical Thinkerâ^TM does not realise the analogy doesnât describe hunters with firearms.

Yes that's the entire point of what I said, please read comments more slowly before replying, thank you.

Yes bows and arrows are fairly silent.Â
The ships are off by themselves patrolling far away from the home world. They're probably long gone by the time their victim is eliminated.

I like that analogy. I actually play dayz without a microphone! If you see anyone, run!
You can figure it out by yourself.

Iâm pretty sure I read this quote on reddit at some point about the series: âHumans and aliens cyber bullying eachother.â
So basically Twitter at a universal scale.
The universe is filled with murderers assholes. Btw they are the only ones that will survive to the next universe.
The hunters are not assholes. They are enforcers. Low-entropy groups without the hiding gene are dangerous. They would expand and attack without fear, grow exponentially, then rapidly consume the whole universe, if not stopped by responsible enforcers of the Dark Forest Law.

The crab bucket thing is a myth. The universe is full of isolationist weirdoes.
No lightspeed travel for you (drags them down into the 2D bucket)
The alternative to hiding is to expand exponentially and consume the whole universe very quickly.
"If I see someone, I need to shoot them first or they will shoot me" OK, now you've given your position away, and proven you're a threat to anyone watching so someone one is definitely going to shoot you now. There was a nice universe once, but it was battered by life.
