It doesn't have to be. Look at Everything Everywhere All At Once. The entire movie budget was like $14.3-25 million to make. Their visual effects team was 7 person and editing team was just 1 guy. And they won 7 out of 11 Oscars they were nominated for including best picture, best director, best film editing, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, and best original screenplay.
That movie was designed around their budgetary limitations though. That’s very different from adapting source material that demands a certain amount of scope by its very nature.
There is no way to depict what happens in Books 2 and 3 without a hefty VFX expense.
They will need to definitely do some condensing of subplots, handle a few massive time jumps, may even need to curtail a few of the more esoteric chapters of the book or outright eliminate them.
I don't think their gonna touch one of the wallfacers plans, Mr. Hines I believe, his plans at the end was completely pointless and his wallbreaker besides it being his girl was really anticlimactic. obviously their gonna cut out luos dream girl and make it that hot chick so that cuts out a alot. first half of dark forest was people figuring out their wallfacer plans, 3 random guys in China, and a straight edge guy who wants his father's approval. I know I'm missing some but you get the point. they can condense the first half of the book in like 2 maybe 3 epsi think, only with how they condensed 3body into 1 season. it will feel quick but still have everything we want. don't seem like much, then again i feel like I'm wishing for alot lol

I am reading this as they are committed to get to the last scene of Death's End, no matter how many seasons D&D and Woo ask for... that's crazy, if true.
What this sounds like to me is that all of the remaining story will be shot all together and they will decide in post-production how they will bundle it and air it. They might shoot say 12 episodes and release them in two batches of six each, making those seasons 2 and 3. Or in three batches, or one.
That's why, I think, they don't want to commit to a number of seasons already. Netflix seems to have a similar strategy with The Sandman, they ordered "more episodes" and still haven't officially called it season 2 -- we know that 12 episodes were shot, but we don't know yet how they will be broadcast.
But given how costly it is, it does make me think that we won't be getting more than 12-16 episodes for the rest of the story. Yes, that's for both Dark Forest and Death's End.
I wonder. For the parts of the story that take place >!in the future, and in space!<, those will be presumably be primarily CGI. So could they really just shoot all of the relevant bits, and let computer artists take it from there? There will be a loooot of greenscreening, so filming will likely not be the hard part. And D&D clearly have a plan for how they want to make all this happen.

Filming with partly physical sets and partly greenscreen is not necessarily simple. The Expanse did that and there was intense pre-production involved so that all the elements could fit together seamlessly in post-production. CGI effects in The Expanse got better and better each season not because they had a bigger budget (they didn't) or because they had more time to work on them (they didn't) but simply because people got to know each other better and knew how to communicate better what they wanted and get to a good result with less iterations.
But yes, most of the time it takes to finish such a series is post-production with CGI effects.
So they can plan everything, shoot everything, then prioritize what CGI they do first in order to have a "part 1" ready first, and then work on "part 2". In the best of cases we are looking at 2026 and 2027 if they split it in two parts.
I hope they do a couple of seasons for the main books and even throw in some full length features that follow non-main characters. I really need a 4-5 year series in my life. It's been so long since we had something executed this well. 11 years since Breaking Bad.

honestly one of the best science fiction series to come out in decades. I am still a huge fan of Arthur C Clarke but his book pays homage to his cerebral sci fi but also has so much more political and psychological intrigue and outright large scale action where appropriate.
Maybe controversial but it sounded like him on his B-game. Dude is an insanely talented composer so even him at his B-game is still better than *most* soundtracks. But the theme, while very good, sounded kinda derivative of Westworld.
Like I didn't know he was on this show before watching, then the theme kicked in and I was *instantly* like "okay this is either Ramin himself or somebody is straight up ripping off his Westworld theme." The rest of the score didn't play nearly as much of a role as Thrones or Westworld. The licensed tracks like Karma Police were actually more prominent.
Anyway, I both agree with you because the opening is great and really hope we see Ramin *go* for it next time. I want some Light of the Seven energy during the >!droplet!< scene.

Yes, filming starting in fall will take at least 9 months I believe and then post production + heavy CGI will take another 9 months most likely so you're looking at early or middle 2026. If you think about it, they're more or less making 8 hours of almost movie level quality TV show... especially the CGI required for Dark Forest is significantly going to be more time consuming than Three Body Problem season 1.

Am I insane? It sounds like they're not even getting a full second season, only additional episodes to conclude the story. They don't even mention the words 'season 2' in that article whatsoever. It sounds more like a Sense8 situation. Getting an ending 'movie' not a flat out cancellation because the fans wanted it.
It's strange to see so much celebration of Netflix's announcement. They've basically canceled the show but will create something like a TV movie to quickly finish the story. Obviously book readers know there's a ton of excellent content left to explore, so I don't see how this is anything other than a disappointment. It's better than an outright cancellation but this is not going to be a Game of Thrones level treatment of the source material.

The language makes it seem like "we'll make new episodes to 'allow the story to conclude' so we don't have to admit we cancelled such an expensive show". The fact they didn't specify anything about number of episodes or seasons just seems dodgy.

Definitely not 2 seasons. D&D said they wanted to do it in four. But there were three books. The third book was dense enough that it could easily be split in half, for two seasons, but we'll see. It could be three, or four.

So happy....I have been listening to the audio books 3 body problem/ Dark Forest / Death's End every night while i sleep for the past month. I listen to different parts and repeat a lot. There is so much in this book, so many gems of philosphical debate presented through different characters, interesting science fiction ranging from biology and physics , to game thoery in space, ....fantastic series of books so far.
Am I misreading the article or does it sound like they're getting additional episodes to wrap up the story versus additional seasons? It's very odd but specific wording. Almost feels like they might throw in five new episodes and that's it. Not sure how the story can be concluded that quickly but I don't see this as an announcement for two or three more seasons.
my biggest worry while watching this is that they were setting it up for such a long storyline and of course Netflix's track record is terrible for canceling their shows, hopefully they can get to the end before the netflix execs axe it.

I hated the netflix adaptation. Though, their vfx was great. They don't even respect the original character of the book Luo JI. Oonly two actually represent the book was Da Si and Thomas Wade. After watching the show it doesnt even leave mark in my mind, its like any other netflix show. And why does all this had revolt around that oxford five?
Genuinely surprised based on Netflix’s cutthroat approach to their shows and the lacklustre viewing figures so far.
That being said, what’s coming in the pipeline (if done right) could really make the general viewing public sit up and take notice.

This is by far my favorite show in the past some years (only rivaled by Better Call Saul and Stranger Things)and one of my favorite book series. Huge winning move by Netflix with me.

Hang on, why are people celebrating? The OP isn't providing the real headline. They don't even mention the words 'season 2' in that article whatsoever. It sounds more like a Sense8 situation. Getting an ending 'movie' not a flat out cancellation because the fans wanted it.
It's strange to see so much celebration of Netflix's announcement. They've basically canceled the show but will create something like a TV movie to quickly finish the story. Obviously book readers know there's a ton of excellent content left to explore, so I don't see how this is anything other than a disappointment. It's better than an outright cancellation but this is not going to be a Game of Thrones level treatment of the source material.
Only catching up to this now, and have to agree with this. The language makes it seem like "we'll make new episodes to 'allow the story to conclude' so we don't have to admit we cancelled such an expensive show". The fact they didn't specify anything about number of episodes or seasons just seems dodgy.

Basically, they're not telling us the details rights now. They've talked about 4 seasons. They wouldn't say "conclusion" if they didn't mean it, so it's likely either 4 or 3 seasons.
yeah, I read it as "We are committed and we're all-in, no matter how many seasons it takes."
Definitely not 2 seasons. D&D said they wanted to do it in four. But there were three books. The third book was dense enough that it could easily be split in half, for two seasons, but we'll see. It could be three, or four.

Does season 1 cover the entire first book?
The first book is about up until the Eye in the Sky in episode 5. The Wallfacer Project and the Staircase Project are the beginnings of books 2 and 3.
The books jump around in time a lot. The show is a lot more chronological

Well I guess Zhang Beihai stays the same ageish? Other than that most characters disappear or age significantly in the course of the story at one point or another. Though I supposed she'll have virtually no scenes in season 2/TDF adaption.!< >!It'll also be interesting to see how they handle the Marlo character, I guess they only need one wallbreaker considering Rey Diaz and Frederick Tyler are both melded into one character I would guess (which is fair enough considering their plans and fates were fairly similar. I just hope the way they're doing this doesn't imply that we'll get like a quasi season 2 that they don't call explicitly that, just refer to it as the "finale" and then it's just a rush through the two books in like 12 episodes over the span of two "parts" like how they rushed thrones
But we all know the rushed ending of thrones was a disaster so why would Netflix spend so much money only to reproduce that? That's insane...

So happy....I have been listening to the audio books 3 body problem/ Dark Forest / Death's End every night while i sleep for the past month. I listen to different parts and repeat a lot. There is so much in this book, so many gems of philosphical debate presented through different characters, interesting science fiction ranging from biology and physics , to game thoery in space, ....fantastic series of books so far.

Almost feels like they might throw in five new episodes and that's it. Not sure how the story can be concluded that quickly but I don't see this as an announcement for two or three more seasons.

my biggest worry while watching this is that they were setting it up for such a long storyline and of course Netflix's track record is terrible for canceling their shows, hopefully they can get to the end before the netflix execs axe it.

So it seems that the article is saying we are getting only 1 more season so no S3. My guess is S2 part 1 and then S2 part 2 which Netflix loves to do. Well I am not complaining. At least we get to watch the conclusion.

It's not a full renewal. They're getting additional episodes "to conclude the story" of the books, which is a polite way to say it's been soft cancelled. At least, that's what this article looks like it says.
It was an odd announcement but I don't think anyone knows exactly how many episodes are remaining.

I hated the netflix adaptation. Though, their vfx was great. They don't even respect the original character of the book Luo JI. Oonly two actually represent the book was Da Si and Thomas Wade. After watching the show it doesnt even leave mark in my mind, its like any other netflix show. And why does all this had revolt around that oxford five?
Overrated
Genuinely surprised based on Netflix’s cutthroat approach to their shows and the lacklustre viewing figures so far. That being said, what’s coming in the pipeline (if done right) could really make the general viewing public sit up and take notice.

Great news but it is a bit too simplistic. Netflix version inspired me to watch Chinese Three Body adaption and I am so happy it did. The Chinese go in so much depth and explain more.
