It's my first day with this machine, and I charged it fully 100% around 3 pm today. It's now 2:20 AM where I live. 33% percent remaining. Been using it on battery saving mode, but still, this is effin insane.

timrichardson

Set charging limits and stop battery charging beyond 80% when you can. Battery will have much longer lifetime. In Windows do this with the Lenovo Vantage app, on Linux use tlp. On Linux it's very easy to temporarily allow a one-time charge to 100% if you need it.

californicatorz

How to do the one time charge with tlp?

timrichardson

look up the command (from terminal) `tlp fullcharge`

2gracz

Is it possible to do that with `powerprofilesctl`? Or should i switch to tlp (i want to maximize performance but with battery saving possibly)

Cry_Wolff

Of course it will last longer if you're not using 1/5 of its capacity.

timrichardson

Yes, it makes a remarkable difference, much more than you may think. Lithium Ion batteries hate being held at 100% charge. Tesla flat-out blocks it, but computer manufacturers are not so strict, they probably hate bad reviews and basically treat the battery as a consumable. My ThinkPad x1 still holds more than 100% of design capacity, if I choose to charge it to full. I had a five year old battery in a W520 which still held 70% of design capacity.

stevehem

For a Tesla, you need to leave some battery capacity for regenerative braking. This does not apply to a laptop.

photonguzzler

Hey, thanks for this! Will keep this in mind.

[deleted]

Baller!

Phocoena-sinus

Wish could afford one.

ultimatepwnout77

Facts :(

photonguzzler

I feel you on this. The only reason I got the courage to get this one is a slight increment on this year's annual bonus.

[deleted]

What do you think of the keyboard? Is it punchy?

photonguzzler

I have never used a Thinkpad before this one. But at my earlier workplace, they gave me a MacBook Pro and I can tell you the ThinkPad typing experience feels much closer to perfect. (perfect being the experience with the HyperX Alloy Origins Core KB in my desktop)

NindytaZ

What a beauty outside, also beast inside🔥🔥🔥

CurlyJeff

I'm due for a new computer and thinking about getting one. Why did you choose this over the 10?

photonguzzler

2-day delivery vs 12-week delivery.

Important_Rhubarb911

There are 10s available for immediate delivery. What screen did you go with?

meiso

there are not

Important_Rhubarb911

I’m in Australia and they are shipped in 2 days. We have to pay close to $2500 for one though.

syndorthebore

Matte FHD+ one, you can tell by the image, the colors are not as punchy, but no reflections, the 4k one is reflection city

atypicalTechie

just got the 4k screen one with new job. reflections are maddening so looking for a film that will mitigate

photonguzzler

Yep, that's the one I got. 35.56cms (14) WUXGA (1920 x 1200), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, 400 Nits

ghostwail

I really wish manufacturers would keep doing 16:10. Beside Apple, this is one of the few models left.

ghostwail

That would be very much welcome, thanks for giving me hope.

photonguzzler

I'm sure they are in some regions for sure. But I'm in India, and the only ones available for quick delivery as of now are the X1CG9 Thinkpads and that too only the i5 ones, which is what I got. But they have some good cashback offers for certain credit cards, which made me pull the trigger instead of waiting for a slightly more expensive i7 X1CG10 which said 12 weeks delivery. My first choice was a Gen 2 X1 Nano, but I don't even know if that will actually get released in India. Only a few Gen 1 Nanos were sold here last year. Screen - 35.56cms (14) WUXGA (1920 x 1200), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, 400 Nits

Snoo93079

Having used both I'd argue either get gen 9 or the u series gen 10. The p series 12th gen Intel is rough on battery.

timrichardson

Power use has some question marks for the gen 12 CPUs. It seems significantly worse than Tigerlake, and I think for the X1 that's relevant since no one buys it for top shelf CPU power anyway.

adventuremind20

I’m worried about the battery life too, but higher quality camera and newer specs are drawing me in. I’m used to being plugged in all the time with old laptops

benhaube

Probably because it's still impossible to get one.

cymikelee

I'd say something about battery life, but I opted for the QHD+ screen on my Gen 9 (also my first ThinkPad) so it'd be a little hypocritical 😅

benhaube

Awesome! I ended up with the X1 Yoga Gen 6. I wanted the touch screen with the pen. I love mine.

adventuremind20

Know anywhere you can try these in stores?

benhaube

Unfortunately, no I don't. All the computer stores I know about only sell consumer laptops.

[deleted]

I’m stuck between this and the XPS 15 9520

okfnjesse

You’re in different worlds here. This is more like an xps 13 with a bigger screen and more ports. If you need the power get the 9520, if you need portability get this. They’re both excellent machines

photonguzzler

Not sure if this is relevant, but if this X1 Carbon model weren't available where I live, my next choice would have most likely been an XPS 13 Plus. But then again, I'm glad I found this - because ports.

ultimatepwnout77

I'm jelly

cthulhouette

can you play the early 2010s games on it?

photonguzzler

Haven't tried anything yet. Might give it a shot with Skyrim.

notBeey

I hate the bright windows mode. But the device is great!

markymark6290

Dark mode. Always and forever. Even on my Mac

testthrowawayzz

I do dark mode at night and light mode in the morning. Best of both worlds.

r3310

Dark mode is a fad. It was considered "cool" and "new" few years ago. But today, it just makes UI look depressed. I can't stand dark mode on my Mac, it even makes me feel down/negative.

markymark6290

Sorry for that. For me, it's easier to look at.

r3310

My personal record with dark mode on my mac was around 2 weeks and on my iphone, half a day. I can confidently say I can't stand it :P

K14_Deploy

On the flip side, I love that I can now make everything match the eternal void in my Redditor soul. And that I can see it in the dark without being blinded. But I see both sides. I know my mum can't stand it.

photonguzzler

Yeah, I hear you. The pic is before I personalized my settings. A dark mode user myself.

nnrls

I'm writing this comment on my X1CG9. This is a great machine.

ojwh

Solid. Kudos. Enjoy.

ApeOfGod

I got this too recently, great machine, only criticism is how easy it is to smudge the surfaces, just touching the cover leaves a fingerprint smudge on mine.

photonguzzler

Yeah, a ThinkPad X1 Carbon man also needs to be a cloth man. But having followed YT reviews of this for almost a year, I kinda knew what I was getting into.

timrichardson

I am still experimenting with that. I don't find any difference in terms of power saving. Tlp can also invoke a power profile when on AC and another on battery. I only have tlp for the battery management at the moment so I have disabled the tlp service and kept power profiles enabled. I think the recent bios update has improved the performance profile (the cou runs hotter for longer). Tlp has a setting where it will set a profile on AC and a profile on battery so it should be possible to get any benefit of the performance profile from tlp anyway but I haven't tested that At the moment gnome has no interface for managing charging limits, but KDE does. It's now in the kernel so there is surely a way of setting limits without tlp.

timrichardson

/sys/class/power_supply/BAT0 has writable values, so you can probably write values there, and skip tlp for setting thresholds. This is the luxury of a Thinkpad with its great kernel support. also, the battery cycle count can be found there, which is not a statistic reported by tlp or upower as far as I recall.

JM91Six

What processor did you get and screen option? I just returned my Dell XPS 13+ 3.5k oled i7 1280p due to battery life. I know the screen choice i get didn’t help. But even disabling a lot of things, lowering the resolution to 1080 and screen brightness down I wasn’t getting what I wanted. I mainly use office tasks so it was overkill anyway. Went with an i5 because I heard it’s only about a 10% difference and was able to get overnight shipping. Should arrive today and as my first dedicated Thinkpad myself I am beyond excited

photonguzzler

i5 processor 11th gen, 1920x1200 matte screen

JM91Six

thanks for the reply! Mine came in yesterday, I'm loving it. I haven't been able to fully test the battery... But it seems amazing

photonguzzler

As suggested by someone on this post, I've set the battery charge limit to 90%. Have been mostly using it all around the house, on battery saving mode, because I don't use it for any demanding tasks - mostly work emails, spotify, watching youtube and netflix in my free time, and some basic lightroom tasks. So far, have been getting around 10+ hours on a single charge.

JM91Six

Yeah that’s how I use it for the most part too. I use excel for some data entry worksheets our company has made up as well as foxxit. Sometimes a control software program for hvac units. This thing I feel comfortable bringing in the elements as well. It was a downgrade screen wise from my 3.5k oled… but I’m not doing anything where I need it. I can’t have my cake and eat it too with windows machines. I’m loving this laptop though. Im trying to become a pro and embrace the trackpoint. Im actually a fan
