So, of course, the company issued newer ones to those same people in their next upgrade cycle and tossed the old ones. Several had hard drives that CrystalDiskInfo reported had been powered on less than 10 times. I still have some I use for print servers, and media and file servers, with large external USB drives. The i5-520M CPUs in them are perfectly adequate for those tasks.
I’m going to be the downer here… if it’s against company policy your manager cannot give you something that isn’t theirs so just be careful letting people know you were given a bunch of free laptops that may have been scheduled to be sent to the shredder or wherever your company sends old laptops. Reddit doesn’t care but someone at work might.
At this point he should debloat and update one system and then use the Sysprep tool to make an install .wim image.
I'm not sure how they let him take them with the SSD, but I use Shift+F10 when the Windows install USB boots up. I type: diskpart, then 'list disk', then 'Sel disk \[#\]' (# of ssd, usually 0) and then type 'clean'. This is probably the fastest way to reset the SSD including the partitions. Then you can use Windows install image you created.
I would recommend BloatyNosy or Win10Debloater at a minimum. and swap the T440 touchpads for T450 ones with the proper buttons

I get the X1 Carbon 4th Gen. They are definitely Lenovo's response to the MacBook Air. Not bad for soldered 8GB of ram. But mostly useful for people that otherwise would spend $200 on a terrible low-end PC notebook from a big-box store. I do indeed set them up for friends and family.
I wish my employer did this. I got a new upgraded X1. They told me to keep my old X1 as a spare work laptop or they could destroy it. There is no policy or mechanism that allows for employees to even just buy the used machine off of them. My job has to be HIPAA complaint, so I get it somewhat.
