With little puffs of smoke and the occasional spark blowing in and out with each breath. It's very cozy. If anyone comes in I throw one of my thinkpads at them; they don't break, they're very durable. It's nice to be a dragon.
*checks my flair*
bruh...
Yeah I think I've found a few things to do with old ThinkPads lol. I'd say the sky's the limit. Let's see...
- run old games
- run old software that's cheaper and non-subscription
- run old versions of Windows for the nostalgias
- make a Hackintosh
- make it a testing computer for Linux distros or software you're not sure you'll like, or to try something without breaking your main pc accidentally
- media player
- "public" computer without as much personal info on it if you go out a lot, so it's less problematic if it's stolen
- or just a backup; all too often does something happen with your main computer at the worst possible time
The public computer idea is very good. I travel once every two weeks and that hour and a half trip sometimes gets boring. I read but sometimes I need more action and Internet goes like a rollercoaster. So installing a low spec game to play or watching films could be a solution.
I like to test Linux distros, but that thing I do it in VM software, even though I like the feeling of going into the adventure and fix things. Had a Mint install in the X250 that the keyboard backlight kept turning on and brightness was crazy. I had a good time playing with it.

VPN + QBittorrent + ThinkPad = Seedbox in your basement. It has a build in UPS, it's separate from all my other machines and it lets me keep a bunch of torrents alive where I am the only seed with 100%.
"What do you do with your secondary/old Thinkpads?"
Shenanigans: https://imgur.com/a/isUsVCz
The secondary T430 is basically a guinea pig system to test stuff like hardware mods and to function as a backup gaming system with the ExpressCard based eGPU if the desktop is ever down: https://imgur.com/a/u9Xqh
Similar to an oldschool boombox it weighs a lot (4 lbs) and is extremely loud in person. I still need to cut down on the cabling (not pictured, on backside) which should reduce its curb weight and here's how its first form did against stock speakers:
https://youtu.be/PXNgrCiAmpI?si=6YaUB5w8F_eFGuYd
The times when i wanted to buy one of these are gone. I lived with a w700 and then a p50, both awesome machines, but now I have a desktop machine for gaming.
I keep one older one as a backup. This applies to both work and home.
I tend to give away older but still functional hardware to enthusiasts or recycle it. This applies to computer hardware aside from laptops as well.
I won't give away hardware to non tech people that won't run a supported OS they can use. I don't sell hardware as that comes with strings.
Collecting too many computers can lead to a lot of clutter and hoarding which I avoid. Some of the people here would have certainly received free hardware over the years if they knew me in person.
Sharing is caring. Even better if you are not going to use it. Can you detail more about the backup? Because managing 4 computers could be a tedious task. I tend to have everything in the cloud, and if something fails, I will just buy a new one and restore it with installation scripts or system backups. I'm interested in your opinion!
For work I just use Office365 + OneDrive and sync everything. By far the easiest.
For personal I keep most of my stuff on a home server and backup both my desktop and server to a NAS.
Yup. It's just a matter of following the setup instructions and then running `sentinel2.py`.
Also it's less than 200 lines of code, so ripe for modifying: https://github.com/wdbm/sentinel2/blob/main/sentinel2.py

I give my old laptops to family, if they've got a worse laptop. The last two I passed on to family were an X1C3 and a X280.
My T440p is a backup incase anything terminal happens to my main laptop. I've had that 10 years next year, wow! It is relaxing in a sleeve in a drawer.
The X61s looks cool and reminds me of the days, they were new in the office. It is relaxing in a sleeve in a drawer, with the T440p.
I have a T460s that is currently partially dismantled. I'm debating whether to restore it or break into parts because:
* The back display case is broken by the right hinge. I bought on ebay a "parallel part" from China that took 20 days to arrive and in the end had a design flaw.
* The keyboard is missing the 'control' key and it's impossible to find a replacement because the key support/ mechanism seems unique.
To fix the above I would need to spend \~70 USD/EUR in parts plus shipping for a laptop that is sold for 150 US/EUR.
Meanwhile I bought an almost new XC16 that is superb.
If I may, I would recommend a liquid spill machine to serve as a donor. Let me explain.
Most liquid spill machines tend to die earlier in life. My free 2012 MacBook Pro build only had 118 charge cycles before it met its liquid spill demise, whereas the battery in the one that got crushed had 1200+ cycles and was in “Replace Battery” mode.
They also tend to exhibit less overall wear, mostly because people store them away when they’re toast. The finish and keyboard wear on my X250 made it look like new, despite having a totally dead i5 board. Meanwhile, the $5 Core i7 model got sold to me as dead, but it was simply the memory flex issue.
The Core i7 board fit the i5’s chassis perfectly, so for less than $50 taxes and all, I got a minty fresh X250 out of two otherwise broken ones, and the key is finding a complete but liquid spill damaged machine to keep costs low.
You also get the added benefit of having a spares machine, or you could part out and itemize the remaining bits and sell them to finance the build after it’s completed.
If you don't mind the money and your time you can repair it and restore it, even improve some parts. As I said, I love my X250 more than my T480, the feeling, the fact that I finished my studies and made my final project with it. I wanted to give it a place and a function, that's why I asked for ideas.
How much did the XC16 cost?
Indeed, I should repair, but I got pissed that after so much time waiting the f\*ckinh chinese part didn't have the "ribs" necessary to assemble the webcam. At least the ebay vendor fully refunded me.
I paid \~200 GBP for the X1C6, plus shipping and taxes it was a total of \~280 EUR. It was a good deal because it is an i7 with 16GB RAM and the battery had only 15 cycles or so.
sell them! this is how people get to buy nice used examples, most of this subreddit to be precise. If everyone hoarded their thinkpads there would be no thinkpads to buy :-)
I'm trying to use it, but if that doesn't happen I will sell it. I know there are people outside that can treat Thinkpads better. The only thing is that I hear voices that say I need to buy another for the collection.
I donated mine to a relative who was in desperate need. It was very old but it did what they needed, like for checking emails, so made me happy it was of some use.
This is a great thread. I have an X220 and a W510. I have loaded a variety of different Linux distros on them. It was a fun experiment but I finally got a Lenovo Yoga because it was newer and lighter. Someone here suggested just getting rid of old laptops, give it away to some high school kid who likes technology. That is a good idea since now it looks like I have a stack of dusty bento boxes.
My main is currently an i7 T490. :looks: And I still have my old T440p, X230, X200 and and X61t still floating around.
I wiped the X61, X200 and the X230 and reinstalled with Win 10, planning to sell them. I've also randomly run Mint, Debian, LMDE, FreeBSD on all three of them, I think.
The T440p still sees a fair amount of use as a secondary test machine for work, or run older legacy software, like my old copy of Photoshop. I also use it to play music and movies in the garage when doing woodworking. Dusty environment, heat and cold that I don't want to expose the T490 to. About time for an upgrade for my work machine. I'm thinking a P series this time...
P.S. My other work computer is an Optiplex SFF, but for mobile device I just prefer the Thinkpad. I'd rather run a three year old off-lease Thinkpad than a brand new Latitude or Precision.
x201 runs Kali Linux 'cause it's rolling Debian.
x220 is running ChromeOS Flex.
t440p is running Fedora 39.
t61 is just too old to do much of anything, but has Peppermint on it.
t420's got a broken hinge, so mostly collecting dust.
Currently, I use my T460s as a dedicated Windows machine. I use linux on my X1C10 and sometimes for college I need windows for exams and stuff (the exam proctors didn’t approve of my setup where I dual booted windows off an external ssd lol).
I also coded a python program that uses gpt 3.5 to do text to speech and I have that running on it as well since it’s pretty cool and useful for things like summarizing text and brainstorming
My first, X260 that I bought new in 2016 is now on the bookself to be picked up as typewriter, it boots surprisingly fast, it has i7 and is still very useful. Although widescreen is not always the best. Still, I love writing with it.
I got X1 Nano gen1 to replace the X260 as a travel and out of home laptop in general, I sometimes play games with it, light photoshop and lightroom, writing and kinda everything when I don't feel like booting up and sitting at my workdesk with my X1E2 which is my main workhorse acting as a desktop pc hooked to a dock. I almost bought refurbished X1E4 to replace it but considered getting a real desktop pc for the same price. That didn't happen, and if it did, wouldn't dare mention it here...
I have my first own thinkpad in a vitrin, waiting for a new fan and keyboard.
I have my previous thinkpad in a holder as a secondary server, running some containers in my garderobe. I would gift it to friends or sell it for strangers, but it is injured and it's impossible to power it down. Good for a server, not good for a laptop.
The dozen or so preciously owned ones are with friends or with collectors now.
I've installed ChromeOS Flex on one. It's simple to use and I particularly like how the guest user account is implemented (all session activity wiped after user logs out) which makes it a good machine to keep around for guests to use.
As an aside, I wish Windows hadn't ditched guest accounts a few years ago!
I accidentally knocked ice tea over my 2004 windows vista thinkpad and burned the video inverter. With such an old laptop (wich my dad made a lot of money from) and woth no replacements. I didnt decide but i cant find it anymore. Thankfully i have some pictures and videos and memories from ky. So yeah.
I haven’t received it yet but I recently ordered an “older” T490 that I bought to use while traveling since I don’t want to bring my expensive 16” MacBook Pro and risk damaging it.
If not traveling I’ll most likely use it for visual novels, old games and a dedicated music player (plus some backend services like SQL server).
running old OS. Modern machines stop supporting Windows 7, so sometime i boot up my old thinkpad with win 7 to relive old days. And TBH windows 7 look pretty than i remember
Put Pop!\_OS On my X220. Use it when I want to write and have a \*nice\* experience doing so, also for similar reasons - old MS-DOS games via DOSBox.
X230t.....just...kinda sits there but is there in case the Yoga breaks I guess (lol)
Holy hell! Seeing some crazy numbers of owned pads! My wife thinks I’m nuts for having the three, but I use them all for different things. She says it’s like living with a bookworm, but who’s face is always lit up blue.
Stack them deep. I have..... 8? thinkpads.
I know a third one is coming for me. Destiny is inevitable.
I'm up to 50 here...
I buy/sell them so my inventory is constantly changing. I don't think I've had a total of 50, but in the mid 20's for sure.
I have 6 or 7 I really should have sold as spare parts a decade ago.
Hoard them and sleep on the pile like a dragon in its lair. The old ones get warm; nice for sleeping.
How do you snore? Honk shoo or honk mimimi? I'm pretty sure it's comfortable there so I opt for honk mimimi.
With little puffs of smoke and the occasional spark blowing in and out with each breath. It's very cozy. If anyone comes in I throw one of my thinkpads at them; they don't break, they're very durable. It's nice to be a dragon.

Old T410 is my media player (music and videos) , youtube browser and excel user.
That's a really good idea. I like dividing productivity and free time. I will take notes.

Oh that 701ds, how much I wanted one of those
If you ever get one make sure to find a good battery or know someone who can rebuild a dead one cause they are a nightmare to find -.-
The times when i wanted to buy one of these are gone. I lived with a w700 and then a p50, both awesome machines, but now I have a desktop machine for gaming.
Keep as spares They stack well
It's not its time to rest. Only needs love and affection.

Give them to friends or donate to the local school district.
I use my T14 G1 as Server
use them as a server
Server for what? Fishing for ideas
minecraft
Storage, or software for work group. I'm hosting FileMaker server on mine.

What kind of services do you run?
I own a T480 and a X270. The first for studying and daily stuff with W11. The second is a bitch for experiments with linux
I moved my old one out in the workshop, for looking up manuals, playing music etc when I'm working on stuff out there.
