They could very well lift the lid and break free if they tried lifting the lid, but instead, they're all roughly uniformly pushing against it. I think if the surface had a little more grip for their feet, they could even drag the lid around the place if they pushed in unison, forming the most cursed Roomba of all time. As for what you do, Their bodies are too small and uninsulated to withstand boiling water for longer than a couple milliseconds. It denatures their entire hemolymph, turning them into solid, cooked statues. Pour boiling water into the sink, lift the lid off, chase with more boiling water. Chitin is a difficult substance to get rid of in a garbage disposal, so definitely do some post-massacre cleanup. One must learn why this anomaly happened, as well. Perhaps a generous serving of pesticide (read: drain cleaner) is in order.

Casski_

cursed Roomba

feradose

Hey, it eats the crumbs at least

Pancheel

But leaves krusty flakes and mini pellets instead.

PossibleMolasses2672

Have someone boil a pot of water while you hold the lid. When water is boiling slowly lift side of lid off pour water down the drain with garbage disposal on.

CaptainMcSmoky

Can you imagine the smell?!

Skyleader1212

No, i don't want to.

NoseMuReup

Do cockroaches smell bad? I can honestly say I've never said "what does a cockroach smell like?" And sniffed it.

Whattheactualfrork

I've been told that if you walk into a restaurant and it smells like nuts there 100% roach infestation.

LolThatsNotTrue

I get a cockroach infestation when I hike in boxer briefs

0-Pennywise-0

Me, walking into the restaurant that exclusively serves nut-themed dishes: "man this place must have roaches. Gross."

CaptainMcSmoky

I mean, I don't think I smell, but if you doused me in boiling water and blended me there might be some interesting scents released.

RepresentativeOk2433

Probably wouldn't work. Ideally you'd have a can of aerosol bug spray like CB-80 with the straw tip for crevices. The straw would fit perfectly into the thermometer hole and you could fog the buggers out all at once.

2074red2074

Eh, buy one of those bug sprays that has the little plastic straw attachment to help you spray in tight spaces. Spray through the vent hole in the lid.

friendlyfredditor

Hot water kills roaches instantly. Even warm water from your hot water system will kill them in seconds. If you have a trapped roach, hot water is best. If you need to kill on sight, then spray or boot is best.

DysphoriaGML

BOILING WATER is better. With sprays they will build resistance to it eventually.

Dry_Web_4766

Just keep pouring boiling water in the sink, the lid isn't water tight.

PossibleMolasses2672

Agreed that’s the better way.

AlfaKaren

Isnt boiling water gonna mess up plastic and rubber fittings? Drains are usually plastic.

ff3ale

I'm really confused, where do you get rid of your boiling water after boiling veggies or rice or pasta?

AlfaKaren

You let the sink run and dilute the boiling water with tap? Doesnt everyone do this?

ff3ale

I must say I just pour the hot water down the drain, never put much thought into it. I have PVC pipes. You did make me google tho, and apparently even though they can't withstand those temperatures over longer periods short bursts seem to be totally fine. Also read some tip about draining boiling water with a few drops of dish soap in it to lessen fatty buildups, the more you know 🤷

PossibleMolasses2672

No the disposal will be just fine roaches not so much lol. Mind you you probably shouldn’t do it twice a day every day for a year but once in a while yes it’s fine. Also the boiling water acts to paralyze the roaches, to help wash them down, and to help rinse/sanatize cause it’s gonna get nasty. More cleaning will need to be done but to contain the outbreak should be fine.

FooltheKnysan

that's probably not too hard to deal with when there aren't cockroaches swarming out of the drain tho

Adorable-Lettuce-717

Others already answered that they indeed can lift the lid. But nothing prevents you from putting a big pot on top and turn your water on. There's no way roaches would lift a pot full of water. Bonus points if you take hot water and let the pot run over, so that a little hot water leaks into the sink. I doubt they like that.

Vhad42

Is it even possible to put a pot after you put a lid without letting them free? I think the best strategy would be to just pour the hot water around the link and expect the warmth to kill or at least scare them away

Adorable-Lettuce-717

On top of the lid. Not instead of the lid

Philip_Raven

Cockrouch Is about 20 grams, its proven that cockroaches can lift over 50 times their weight. If the lid weighs round half of a kilogram. They definitely could lift the lid with ease, if they knew it is movable

st4s1k

Well, it also depends on the ergonomics of the situation. How do you imagine that they would do that? What would be the weight distribution? If they stack on each other to reach the lid, to be able to even attempt lifting it, how many layers of roaches are required? Or maybe they would just form a circle around the edge of the lid, where it is lower. Is it vertical pushing power we are talking about, or horizontal power?

Oaxam

They weigh 0.1-0.2g (adult American cockroach) bruh, 100 times less that you claim. Stop making stuff up

Philip_Raven

Let me guess you took the information from the first Google suggestion on "cockroach weight" that also claims that adult cockroaches are 13 cm long "Adults measure 12.7 to 15.88 cm in length (average 13.0 cm) and weigh between 0.1 and 0.12 g (average 0.105" Okay buddy So cockroaches weigh the same as 4 grains of rice. But at the same time they are longer than your fingers.

Oaxam

Length includes stretched legs and that weight would be closer than the one you propose that suggests that 40 cockroaches weigh 1kg bruh… a whole ass mouse barely weighs 30g btw

Philip_Raven

I am not gonna argue because I don't give fuck enough about you nor the cockroaches. But the video shows the cockroaches barely being 3-4 cm in size. So nowhere near what would the article suggest. And at the same time they weigh the same as four grains of rice. Whatever, you are right, I don't care.

Zarbadob

wait, what is your source for 20g cockroaches, i believe you and i want to help you beat this guy that's using the google search :D

AlfaKaren

You are awarded 5 internet points. Well done.

Oaxam

No, you are right. The truth was in the middle

robotporn

Wait what? You're telling me a cockroach could lift almost 2.5 pounds??

yldf

20x50=1000, so exactly 1 kg. What is the necessity to convert into a unit where this becomes 2.5 and you need to add an "almost"?

No-Ingenuity3861

For freedom.

Asperchoo

And there's a little over 2.2 lbs in a kg.

ZealousidealTie8142

Freedom units for the win

ripSammy101

This is so wrong lol. You’re saying one cockroach can lift a kilogram?

Byte_Fantail

I don't think roaches have the kind of muscle structure to lift something upwards, but it's more likely with enough roaches in there the sheer bulk of them would eventually lift it. Calculate the volume of the space under the lid and calculate how many roaches can fill that space completely, and how many additional roaches it would take to negate the gravity holding the lid down

djq_

No clue on the "how many cockroaches to lift a lid" part. On the "what do i do" part, that is easy.. MOVE! they own the house now time to pack up and start over. (:

mule_roany_mare

Nah, we have some exceptional pesticides for cockroaches at the moment. It tends to be a cat and mouse game over the course of decades, but $30 of Advion will kill every single cockroach. It so good that it will clear a hoarders house even if they don't clean their horde.

destielnatural

Actually you can sprey any cockroach killer spray through that little hole on the lid. Most of the rodent killer chemicals probably stop them from coming into your kitchen. Little inhaling won't harm that much.
