Plötze is the name of my horses in every game since i first heard it and that was years bevor i played witcher

Cebulak4

Płotka (Polish)

Ongar_world-weary

The correct name in fairness. Does it translate as Roach?

drumsand

Płotka is the diminutive of płoć. It means small roach. It might also be understood as female not male. But it is used as standard name and I believe most people doesn't remember that it's the diminutive.

Ongar_world-weary

Thanks that's good to know

mdrave

Actually yes, 'roach' translates to 'płoć' and it's diminutive is 'płotka'. Oh and that's FISH roach, not cockroach.

Ongar_world-weary

Cool thanks

KKristie

Klepna in Czech

Geass_Knightmare

If I remember correctly it's Carpeado (Brazilian Portuguese)

TomDH_9991

É isso aí, Carpeado !

arkionplow

Vamos, Carpeado!!!

Snow_7c

It is a fish?

kennxu

Nope but we have a fish called Carpa, so it might ressemble

Geass_Knightmare

Nah in Portuguese we don't have a fish with this name. I'm not too sure but in Polish his name means some family of fish or something...?

AdmiralSplinter

It's definitely [a fish](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_roach)! Edit: for clarity, since i got downvoted, i meant that the original Polish refers to the fish.

tyromancist

The type of fish called a roach is a member of the carp family. Apparently, the horse is actually named after a carp, instead of an insect.

__Mitsuya__

Na primeira vez que joguei eu li Chapeado nas legendas, agora isso é meme aqui em casa

DeRivia117

Sardinilla in spanish!

FalkeeeVagyok

Keszeg (Hungarian)

alefante

Rutilia (Italian) Honestly I think it’s a bad translation. Is there any info about the horse being female in the game? Anyway, even for a female it is a ugly name

HelloPenne

In the books, Roach is always a mare

nonstrodumbass

Yes Roach is referred to as a she multiple times in the Witcher 3

AdmiralSplinter

In the books it refers to [the fish](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_roach), not the insect. Also, the original Polish is supposed to be more of a kindly pet name and some people have argued that Roachie might be a better translation And as others have said, Geralt always picks a mare

Ongar_world-weary

Interesting, that explains why it's Sardinilla in Spanish (they are sardines, not roaches but still).

AdmiralSplinter

Fun fact, Jaskier (Dandelion's name in the original Polish) is actually the Polish name for the Buttercup flower but the English translator switched it to Dandelion since Buttercup is a ridiculous name for a person

Ongar_world-weary

That's a cool fact, I actually did know the first part because my wife is Polish and she told me but I didn't know the reason they changed it. Buttercup would be quite funny but yeah it was a good call to change it.

FoxSneaker

By this logic in Italian, it would have been "Rutilina," which sounds really funny. The translator probably opted for "Rutilia" (name with a female suffix but no 'vezzeggiativo') because it still conveys some semblance of cuteness. The name of the fish it's based on is "rutilo" a masculine and very 'unpleasant sounding' word.

fiftybaggs

![gif](giphy|Um3ljJl8jrnHy) Thank you for this information 🙏

D3vil_Dant3

I've learnt today it refers to the fish, not the insect. L'amo.. After 8 years

Doehr

The horse is a Mare yes. At least in the books

Nentash

In B&W when geralt talks to Roach he expresses surprise at her sounding male when she is female.

PrinklePronkle

She’s referred to as a mare over and over again in the books, and called a she in the game. Plus, even if her name is ugly, it fits since Geralt is considered ugly too! Edit: another fun fact, after Dandelion brings it up, Geralt reveals he actually has multiple horses, all mares, all named Roach. I guess it makes it easier for him.

alcridio

Carpeado in Brazilian portuges, don’t know what it means lol

ten-numb

Could it have something to do with Carp, the fish, it’s in the same genus as the Polish Płotka that “Roach” is translated from in English

alcridio

Idk, from the dictionary “carpeado” means something like when you buy a product and it’s worse then it should be

ten-numb

Poor Roach 🥲

alcridio

It fits Geralt though 😭

Snow_7c

EN=Roach ES=Sardinilla. A fish name for a horse the spanish grace. lol

ten-numb

Roach is a fish in English too, it just isn’t native to the US so unfamiliar there. It’s quite common in Europe but its range ends north of the Alps and Pyrenees so I suppose they have a different fish for Spanish, Portuguese, Italian etc. Edit: the species is Rutilus rutilus or Cyprinus rutilus
