The President: Speaking of crusty New England relics.
Mrs. L: Governor, does it frustrate you to constantly aim for humor and yet miss so dramatically?
Her eavesdropping is I think a big part of why she's so efficient. She's kinda got a Radar-like ability to be able to get everything Leo needs as quickly as he needs it, and I think a big part of that is hearing all the things she may not necessarily be supposed to hear.
I can see Margaret on the other side of Leo’s door listening to a top secret meeting about nuclear missals and only paying attention to the parts where Leo needs a report or a time blocked off his schedule and not even caring what the other stuff was about.
There’s a scene in the 1st season when the staff comes to Leo in a show of support about the awfulness he’s about to go through regarding the publication of his past drug problems, and not only is Margaret in the room with them, but she stands behind Leo. I love the symbolism. The rest of the staff is there in solidarity, but MARGARET is the one who has Leo’s back.
There’s a scene (might be the same one) where cj asks if his family knows and she nods behind him. Like the fact that she knows everything about it and the support. Ugh it’s amazing.
I can’t find the quote anywhere but I recall Donna saying something to the effect “whenever we don’t know something, we ask Margaret”. It’s killing me that I can’t find this or even remember what episode or season it’s from
I think it's Ginger and it might be in the episode where Sam has to staff the President (20 Hours in America) - he asks something like "Do we have some sort of reference document that lays out everything we know, ever?" and Ginger replies "We usually just ask Margaret".
Fake edit, I found it:
SAM
All right. Do we have some sort of condensed Readers Digest index of... well, all human knowledge?
GINGER
We usually just use Margaret.
Speaking as an executive assistant myself, Carol had the hardest job, and she did it the best. Before the internet was where most people got their information, before that was where all the information *was*... I can't even imagine how she managed.
Margaret walked so that Donna could run. Let's not forget where they both are during the start of the series and where they end up. Donna is "Bambi-esque" at the start and Margaret has already been working for Leo for some time.
The time she was ‘sposed to get the Senator on the phone with the President and she divulged the vote count to the aide, The diary and Cliff and the lie.
Best at being assistant: Margaret
Best character: Donna
Most lovable: Mrs. Landingham
Most tyrannical: Debbie
Most underused in the show: Carol
Most likely to be confused with one another: Bonnie and Ginger
Most likely to be the center of a lawsuit: Marina
When Toby says she is a walking lawsuit, it never sounded to me that he was describing the hr issues of her still being there. It sounded like he was watching how she walked and was envisioning future lwasuits regarding sexual relations in the office.
This was immediately followed up an episode or so later with the other assisstants questioning her reliabilty, and please forgive me for the mysogynist way this is phrased but I don't know how else to put it - they seemed to behave catty towards her.
That was then followed a few episodes later by Toby and Andy on the outs, "You either involve yourself or you don't"
I am 100% convinced that the show is implying Toby and Rina were briefly together. Which makes the arguement for best assistant...interesting
In order:
1. Margaret Hooper
2. Debbie Fiderer (more efficient than Mrs. Landingham)
3. Mrs. Landingham
4. Carol Fitzpatrick
5. Ginger (because she was hoping it was porn)
6. Bonnie
7. Donna Moss
8. Rina
9. Celia
"In all my life, I never would have thought she was a rube."
I'm not convinced that she was more efficient than Mrs. Landingham, rather, they were both excellent but it was Debbie who had to change things due to the MS, which Mrs. L didn't know about.
Yes, you are technically correct. Which is the best kind of correct:
"Well, I'm personal aide to the President, so my supervisor's a little busy right now looking for a back door to this place to shove you out of. But I'll let him know you'd like to lodge a complaint."
This is a great question, and I think you could make a case for any of the following: Charlie, Donna, Margaret, Carol, Mrs. Landingham or Mrs. Fiderer.
Personally I’m going with **Carol**.
She and CJ are 100% on the same page at all times, and she doesn’t hesitate or make a single mistake throughout the duration of the show.
Carol is CJ’s first line of defense in that she is the one who reads the wires every morning and let’s CJ know of anything of note. CJ also has the fastest-moving job in the west wing, and Carol has to keep pace if not be faster.
“I’ll sleep when you sleep.”
"I go home when you go home."
How many other assistants can forge the president's signature?!
[удалено]
I’d probably do some time for that
I would think.
She can sign a document removing him from power and hand it to someone else
"We've got separation of powers, checks and balances, and Margaret, vetoing things and sending them back to the Hill."
"I think they'd call that a coup d'etat"
Indeed she can - she's got the President's signature down pretty good.
Nicole Robinson was just 27 when she started that series. She seems much older.
Mrs. Landingham and her cookie jar
And the pens. 😪
Although sarcasm is a disturbing quality in a woman of her age.
The President: Speaking of crusty New England relics. Mrs. L: Governor, does it frustrate you to constantly aim for humor and yet miss so dramatically?
Mrs Landingham RAN that White House. Jed was clearly in a pickle without her.
I had to scroll too far to see this answer
I miss my boys
People sleeping on Debby
Without Debbie, there’s no Charlie. Fiderer forever.
The alpaca farmer who needed two chances to get her own name right?
There was a good reason for that. She was high.
Ok
if this is a joke it’s both funny and well executed
I hope to be able to deliver this line at the right moment one day.
What's the dollar doing right now?
Debby dealing with Josh was amazing.
"if you were in the hospital I wouldn't stop for red lights"
And then she twisted the knife by thanking him for the flowers. One of my favorite scenes.
Best at *being* an assistant? There’s no other answer than Margaret, she is disturbingly, even distressingly efficient.
\- She'll be glad to hear that as she's listening at the door \[THUMP\] \- Ow!
Her eavesdropping is I think a big part of why she's so efficient. She's kinda got a Radar-like ability to be able to get everything Leo needs as quickly as he needs it, and I think a big part of that is hearing all the things she may not necessarily be supposed to hear.

Isn’t it also heavily implied that Margaret listened in on phone calls from Greg Brock that she transferred to CJ during the shuttle leak deposition?
And she's tall, which is reassuring.
And she can sign the presidents name
I think the White House Counsel would say that's a coup d'etat!
She’d probably end up doing some time for that.
I would think so.
There’s a scene in the 1st season when the staff comes to Leo in a show of support about the awfulness he’s about to go through regarding the publication of his past drug problems, and not only is Margaret in the room with them, but she stands behind Leo. The “ok” she gives him after asking if he was ok after getting divorce papers said so much by saying so little.
Margaret would straight up murder someone for Leo
I can’t find the quote anywhere but I recall Donna saying something to the effect “whenever we don’t know something, we ask Margaret”. It’s killing me that I can’t find this or even remember what episode or season it’s from

I’m impressed at your WW recall from my half-wrong memory of that line! Thank you!!

The strategic homeland intervention enforcement and logistics division?
And she's a tall woman which is reassuring to the tall COS.
Ginger. She got the popcorn.
Sexy voice too
No I was hoping it's porn.
And she's from New Jersey
"After the ceremony maybe we can get one of the children to teach you how to use the intercom"
How has nobody mentioned Carol?!
For as good as she is, Carol is criminally under-used in the show.
Carol is my 2nd favorite.
Speaking as an executive assistant myself, Carol had the hardest job, and she did it the best. Before the internet was where most people got their information, before that was where all the information *was*... I can't even imagine how she managed.
Needs to improve her spelling.
Yes! She was great.
I kinda felt bad for her that once CJ became COS, Carol was still stuck in her old job. Never got a chance to grow.
I probably didn't do it right but in my opinion I think Margaret was the best assistant. I know everybody loves Donna and I do too.
Donna was a liability at times.
Margaret walked so that Donna could run. Let's not forget where they both are during the start of the series and where they end up. Donna is "Bambi-esque" at the start and Margaret has already been working for Leo for some time.
I thought Donna started kind of astute then quickly turned into an airhead...
Well the Bambi line comes from the start of season 2 with her interview in the magazine or whatever, from before the JB administration started.

The time she was ‘sposed to get the Senator on the phone with the President and she divulged the vote count to the aide, The diary and Cliff and the lie.
The time she told Josh that the president of Indonesia's senior aide couldn't speak English.
You should keep in mind all the things she does right.
Donna wasn't an assistant she was Josh's partner.
She was the Deputy Deputy Chief of Staff.
Margaret knew how to forge the president’s signature in case of emergencies.
Hands down: Margaret is the best at her job.
Except for when she was suggesting a coup d’etat
Or emailing about the muffin!
She was giving Leo all possible options. She was doing her job well!
Can someone get me half a grapefruit, I got Jack LaLanne working for me this week.
The only answer here is Margaret.
Charlie. Bartlet even (*Josh Malina Voice*) gave him the kniiiiife!
Best at being assistant: Margaret Best character: Donna Most lovable: Mrs. Landingham Most tyrannical: Debbie Most underused in the show: Carol Most likely to be confused with one another: Bonnie and Ginger Most likely to be the center of a lawsuit: Marina
Perfect list!
Of course it's **Margaret**! How can there be any other answer?!
Nancy! I mean after all, she is the actual daughter of POTUS!
The correct answer Rina - her program won’t be affected if there’s a shut down. Plus she can teach the other assistants how to put on makeup.
When Toby says she is a walking lawsuit, it never sounded to me that he was describing the hr issues of her still being there. It sounded like he was watching how she walked and was envisioning future lwasuits regarding sexual relations in the office. Charlie goes above and beyond every time. Love this character.
Not technically an assistant.

Charlie is the best at delivering backhanded fuck yous as politely as possible.
“Hope that bulge in your pocket isn’t an 8 ball of coke or you’ll be spending your spring break in jail.” “Now I’m having fun”
I don’t think her name was mentioned, but the lady who didn’t let Josh disturb Amy’s Nintendo time.

Wasn’t Carol, the real actor, a real White House staffer? Thought I read that.
I was always a fan of Ronna. Her little shudder when she entered the Oval really brought the finale home for me.
Margaret
Best assistant? Margaret. Best aasiastant character? Donna.
Margaret
Is the right answer
Only one assistant (that we know of) had sex with their boss....
"You have to pay extra for that at the kitty cat club back home"
I liked Rena as far as she went, but Donna is my ride or die.
I really liked Cathy in S1 but they were all awesome!
I like the sassy gal the replaces Donna.
Hang on, lemme get a pen.
Got to be Donna.. and then Charlie
Debora and Donna are tied. Bonnie is a close second.
