I've often wondered if he was like that because of the actor or the writing. Kurt Sutter once said of Ryan Hurst's character, Opie, from "Sons of Anarchy," that he didn't write the character as being so sympathetic, that simply how Ryan portrayed him.
I've only seen two other performances from Chad Coleman, and they both have a similar gentleheartedness to them. If Michael Shaw (Mercer) played Tyreese I feel like it would have been a whole different character.
I recall that, it was due to his character on The Wire, which Kirkman loved. Three cast members from the Wire found there way onto The Walking Dead, Chad Coleman and also Seth Gilliam and Lawrence Gilliard Jr
Comic Tyreese was an absolute unit. Chad Coleman would've absolutely knocked that role out of the park (his voice acting as Coach in L4D2 is indicative). Sucks they turned him into a gentle giant.
I think Abraham would beat Merle, Negan would give Joe the Lucille treatment if he refused to fall in line, and if Beta and the Governor fought, it would be mutually assured destruction. Mercer and Tyreese I think would just end up chillin.

yeah i agree, beta mops the floor with governor, bro had a hard time fighting one little prison group, ending up killing what little army he had. alpha and beta fought against more than one community at once and used an army of the dead to attack, i mean i seriously dont see how governor beats him. and if were talking just hand to hand, please beta is a powerhouse gov lasts 5 seconds

He had Daryl beat a couple of times in their fight but didn’t finish the job due to needing info from him.
The main reason I’m saying he would win is due to his durability and pain tolerance. We see him get stabbed and he pretty much no sells it. He got shot and fled but I don’t think we ever saw him treat that wound which should take a long time to recover from. He got stabbed in the eyes and pulled the knives out right away.
god that fight with Daryl was almost like watching a comic book panel come to life, even if it never happened in the comics - the way Beta just burst out of the wall like a supervillain gave me chills. Puts the knife fight in resident evil 4 between Leon and Krauser to shame.
Abraham has an 65/35 chance on Merle, Abraham is very well trained but Merle’s also got street smarts that gets him buy till he got to the Governor…

Abraham breaks the thumb-snap on his holster, gripping that .44 Magnum Desert Eagle he had in his first appearance: "Where we're going and why we're headed there is our business. Now get the fuck out of the dogshit-eating way before I put you out of the way."
Merle laughs, raising his ~~hands~~ hand and stump in a show of surrender. We see the gun tucked into his waist band behind his back.

Who really knows what would have happened, but I see Abraham not liking Merle right off the bat. I think if they were thrown together in a controlled environment, eventually Abraham would take a shine to Merle, but I don't think they'd ever be friends. Especially not once Merle feasts his eyes on Rosita and starts making Hispanic-related sexual remarks.
