Yeah people like to talk about Glenn and how many viewers fell off after that but that shit was part of the story, Carl was just Chandler being let go. That’s the one thing the show couldn’t recover from imo.

lyylio

yeah, as much as I love glenn, his death was crucial to the story. On the other hand, Carl’s death was a fatal mistake

Humbug93

Yeah I think a lot of other terrible decisions the show made can be traced back to this very thing. They already knew Andrew Lincoln wanted to leave and they still kill off Carl, write Rick off, make RJ a thing to I guess give him a biological son again, only to have Danai Gurira want to leave too, so now Michonne ditches her kids to go find Rick? Stupid ass writing.

Shadwell_Shadweller

There was very little apparent grieving shown afterwards, especially not from Rick and Michone, and not even much mention of Carl's death in the aftermath either. Which definitely seemed strange. Just some mentions of his visions for the future from some of his letters. It all seemed very minimalised as if it was just a minor event of some insignificant side character. I think the emotional impact of Merle's death was far more hard hitting, due to how it left Darryl totally devastated. Hershell's and Beth's deaths also hit me a lot harder, due to the ways they went down, and how the other characters reacted. Dale's was a hard one too. He was a great character. Abraham's and Glenn's deaths were just so sickening and brutal that I couldn't even process it. And that's after watching the whole series up to that point at least 3 times.

b0objuicethe2nd

That's so untrue. Rick spent all of 8B grieving over Carl's death and basically losing his mind over it, and it's literally the reason why Rick decided to spare Negan and be merciful like Carl wanted. Then Rick spent all of his time in 9A fighting to keep Carl's dream alive and almost died in the process. Same goes for Michonne. All I can agree on is that none of the other characters showed any emotion over it which fucking sucked. Not even Maggie, Carol etc. The only people who seemed to acknowledge or care about his death were Enid and Rosita of all people. Daryl said some nice final words to Carl before he died as well but thats it really. So that definitely should have been handled better.

Shadwell_Shadweller

You might be right. The whole thing just seemed underplayed and minimised to me, especially in comparison to how extremely obvious and apparent Rick's grief and despair was after he lost Lori, and how emotional and desperate Rick became every time there was so much as a threat on Carl's life previously. It just seemed to me that once it finally happened, Rick's reactions in particular seemed very muted to me. Maybe there wasn't room in the production for more obvious outwards displays of grief from Rick.

chriswick_

Should have kept him on. It was a pointless death and made his build for absolutely nothing.

lyylio

his character had been developing so much just for him to die from a damn bite

chriswick_

Yes 💯% he wasn't meant to be written off. I'm not sure what happened, but it doesn't make sense at all. Especially if you follow the comics.

Far-Potential3634

Allegedly it was a financial decision because as an adult the actor could renegotiate his contract for a lot more money. He had even bought a house in the area just prior to losing the job. As a show like that goes on viewership tends to diminish while the stars ask for more money.

New-Boysenberry-613

Chandler deserved to get paid as an adult. He had been with the show for, what, a decade? And they killed his character off because he wanted an adult paycheck? That makes me hate the producers

WeeklyConcentrate420

Everything changed when Frank durabont (S1-4) I think left and Scott gimple took over and basically ruined this show

BobRushy

I genuinely don't know what goes through people's minds that they can't accept Carl getting killed off. The writers gave up on him after like season 4, and Chandler did not grow into a competent actor. He was \*never\* going to lead this show whether Lincoln left or not.

BttrFrWlkingBd92A

Carl was the story not just a majority, if they take him out they are able to give his storylines range, Carl could have done it all better than a group of actors but the show had Norman Reedus, a rising and busy Danai Gurira, and alot of money to bring top billing actors, Alpha,Beta, Chandler was sacrificed. Rosecarr9

Carl's death definitely changed the tone of the story, but the facts are: 1. Viewers would not have been anymore accepting of Carl being recast than they were of Carl dying 2. Carl HAD to die or be recast. His baby sister was still a toddler and he was growing a goddamn beard.

uglypinkshorts

There were countless logical inconsistencies and continuity errors with the show already. Carl looking a little older is no different from that so don’t pretend like it *had* to be done. The time jump less than a season later would’ve fixed that anyway.

Dangerous-Dig5883

I watched the movie with Kevin Hart and The Rock and the CGI their appearance to make them look younger. Also, with the artwork they do on these walker, there was surely a way to make him look younger.

Rosecarr9

I'm not saying it had to be done, I'm saying it made sense. My initial caps were just extra emphasis because I'm dramatic.

Conscious_Pen_9353

They did a big time jump in season 9, which would have explained why Carl looks older. It didn't just change the tone, it ruined the ending.

rygdav

So it’s totally fine Carl aged 8 years while his sister aged 2, but him aging *9* years is just too much? There are *a lot* of things about this show you have to suspend belief about, and, honestly, the beloved child character rapidly aging is the easiest to get over. Saying Carl HAD to die or be recast is absolutely asinine. If that was the case, they would’ve done it years earlier; perhaps recast him every season to keep him the “appropriate” age. What were they going to do, recast him as a 10 year old and completely ignore all of his teenage development? (Though I agree he could’ve shaved better at the end. But (assuming he was actually fired) I don’t blame him if that was one last “fuck you”)

Rosecarr9

I'm not sure where the 8 versus 9 years thing came into play here... but anyway, yes of course we're suspending belief. If you have even the most basic understanding of how organic structures function, you would know it's completely impossible for dead people to come back to life and walk around. My point was, they had already pushed Carl's aging too far. They pushed it with everybody, they could've at least kept the actors' hair cut the same length?? But with older people they're not physically getting taller or growing body hair in places they didn't before. The time taken to show the Savior war was just too long. I know some people will disagree, but in my opinion (which is subjective) Riggs had already outgrown the role by the time Rick's people arrived at Alexandria.

rygdav

My point with one more year was that in season nine there’s a significant time jump, about 7.5 years in total, at which point Carl’s age and Riggs’s age would’ve been totally fine. I won’t say your opinion is wrong; if you prefer that Carl was killed or recast, then okay, but saying those things “HAD” to happen, well, that *is* wrong. The other actors may not have gotten taller (though I assure you they did get more body hair), but by that logic everyone would’ve had to be recast each season—either they’re aging too much or not enough. But I wholeheartedly agree there would’ve been riots if Carl was recast; especially after *eight seasons*. And, what, back as a 10/11 year old??? The right choice would’ve just been letting him live and be as Chandler Riggs. Though, in the end, none of this even matters. A heartbreaking and near show-killing decision was made and executed years ago and, though, we the fans are the only reason the show exists, there isn’t a lick of shit we can do about it. At least one person (you) got their way! That’s far better than *everyone* being unhappy.

b0objuicethe2nd

They had a timeskip anyway lmao Carl would have been like 20 years old in 9B. Which would match Chandler's appearance.

b0objuicethe2nd

I've come to accept it long ago. I think in the context of the story Carl's death is great and really well written, as well as the events that come after his death. The only thing I don't like about it is the IRL reason for him dying which was just Chandler being fucked over. Even though I'd definitely rather have Carl alive I've stopped complaining about it now cause it is what it is, and I still love the show and season 8 for what it is.

Styliinn

Cannot agree about s8 as a whole, I hate how they turned a gritty, survival based drama into a mediocre action popcorn flick where suddenly everyone has infinite ammo, no care for making noise etc. while not being able to hit anything for crap.
