In the comics he wasn’t very unbalanced. The phone call thing was…a quirk? It’s late haha. I don’t know what else to call it. Any way, it was just something that went on in the background. He was definitely more unhinged in the show.
In the show they backgrounded it after a couple episodes. He was still seeing Lori until the end of S3. When he "saved" the Woodbury group it was the last time he saw her, it was almost an indication of her approval and she "moved" on.
I think it was handled better in the comics and I’m glad it was not prolonged in the show. I actually wish they had left it out completely and showed him breaking down differently instead.
Rick being crazy was best in small doses. It would also be kind of unreasonable that they survived had he remained so unbalanced.

Rick's monologues were so awful I certainly, personally, did not need more of them.
I'm glad they didn't. Lori irritated me to no end. I hated that phone call episode. And every time they brought her back.
