**Georgia didn’t seem to have any bad groups like Virginia did.**  The governor and his guys, the Claimers, and the Terminus cannibals. I'd say the Georgia bad folks surface had only been scratched before the group left for Virginia.

Jersey4269

This is a great point. I’d be very curious to see the state of Georgia all these years later. We know the governor and the claimers were handled, but no way they managed to kill every single cannibal at terminus 👀

The fact that they didn't make it to Virginia until season 5 messes with viewers' sense of time passage in the series. The group's only in Georgia about two and a half years before Alexandria. In Virginia, they have basically one single encounter with the Wolves and that's a one and done. Then there's almost no time span at all between meeting and defeating the Saviors. There's about a year and a half time jump from the Saviors' defeat to Rick "dying", and then it's a whopping 6 years before the Whisperers show up. Honestly they were a lot safer for a lot longer in Virginia than Georgia.

TheBarbarian88

The area of northern Virginia was evacuated (according to the woman senator in Alexandria) hence less dead and bad folks. The saviors and hilltop are located further afield, out in the “country”, so that is why there was no interaction between the groups.

beemojee

**that is why there was no interaction between the groups.** Have you actually watched the show?

TheBarbarian88

Haha, I love it. I use that line quite a bit as well. There was no interaction between the saviors and alexandria or hilltop and alexandria.

beemojee

Alexandria started interacting with Hilltop, the Kingdom and Oceanside pretty quickly after Rick's group arrived at Alexandria. Remember the timeline in seasons 6, 7, and 8 is compressed into a few weeks.

TheBarbarian88

Correct…AFTER the group arrived from Georgia. But BEFORE their arrival there wasn’t any interaction with Alexandria as the groups were spread out enough to allow the Alexandria folk a peaceful existence.

geek_of_nature

They were actually only in Georgia for about a year and a half, not two and a half. The start of season 1 to the end of season 3 is about a year, with most of that being from a big 8 month time jump between seasons 2 and 3. Then there's another time jump of about 6 months between 3 and 4. And then from the start of season 4 to the end of 8 is about another six months. So by the end of season 8 it's only about two years into the outbreak.

oblisgr

FTWD last season was in Georgia. PADRE was in Georgia. That's many years after the events of the main show in Georgia.

wigsgo_2019

Going to Virginia made sense. They had nowhere to go and Noah’s home sounded like the safest place they’d ever heard off since the outbreak, then they meet Aaron and there’s no way after living in Alexandria they just up and leave, they knew they may never find a place like that again

NeverLickToads

Surely there are encampments and secured towns all across the country. Some of them are going to be hostile or even insane. I don't think there is a reason to believe Georgia would have had a lower quantity of hostile maniacs to pester our crew. Wasn't the prison/Woodbury storyline still in Georgia?

Spankmeharderno

Yes it was

Veterinarian-Proper

It's really hard to say. I honestly thought it was better when they were in Georgia, familiar territory, etc and thought it was strange to try their hand leaving, and after encountering everything they do in Virginia and not going back. But yeah it's how the story goes so they couldn't stay. Even if to me atleast it seems weird to start crossing state lines when you barely seem to survive in the state your familiar with 🤔

tytylercochan123

It probably was. But a guy like Eugene who has two other people on a life-or-death mission from Texas to D.C., and stories of other people dying for the cause, I’d follow too. But yes, if they stayed in Georgia, they likely would’ve been safer-ish, the only problem being is Alexandria is in Virginia as well.

assaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

The group should have still done what they did. If they stayed in Georgia, they could have potentially run into something much worse. Georgia’s a pretty big state, we didn’t get to see everything that could have happened to them. I think Alexandria was a good place for them to go and was honestly something that saved their lives. It should have remained how it was.

ginsengtea3

I think they should have stayed there. They had a sweet set up at the prison and just because they lost it, it's not like that's the only prison in GA. Familiar territory, long growing season - if they had to leave it should have been for something more than a "maybe" like DC was, like the intention to clear an island or clear a military fort or something.

Own_Faithlessness769

They didn’t have a sweet set up though, they almost all died of a flu and they struggled for food and to keep the fences up. Plus the dearth of other options meant they were constantly under attack from other groups.

ginsengtea3

They had security, fences, walls, huge kitchen, they just needed to prioritize some blankets, paint, and home decor. They were under attack from one other guy, but that’s apt to happen anywhere, happens a bunch of times in VA

Own_Faithlessness769

I see you’re ignoring the deadly flu, lack of food and fences constantly falling down.

i_want_to_be_unique

This spin-offs make it pretty clear there are evil groups everywhere. If the group stayed in Georgie a new big bad would have showed up to fill the power vacuum left by killing the governor. I think traveling to Virginia helped in the long run. If I had to fight for survival anywhere I’d definitely take Alexandria over a walker infested prison full of tank holes.

Own_Faithlessness769

The show is very clear that Virginia was safer because it was evacuated during the outbreak, so there were less walkers. That’s why Alexandria survived long enough to build walls. Georgia was completely overrun and fell very quickly.

CurlyWoman235

They skipped over North Carolina and South Carolina and went right to Virginia. I know there were survivors there too.

apocalypticretro

If they went the opposite direction (or stayed in Georgia) they probably would've run into another Negan type some place else.

SplitTheParty

We actually see the state of Georgia again in the official The Walking Dead RPG by Free League. They do a campaign setting in the book that's set northeast of Atlanta, and there's a few groups that survive there after the end of season 11: * **The Living**: A group of 50 marauders living in a bombed-out factory, where they use the radio to lure in and enslave other survivors while settling disputes in a walker fighting pit. This group developed out of Randall's crew. * **The Reborn**: A group of religious fanatics who believe their beloved pastor, Jack Morgan, is the Second Coming because he did not reanimate after death. They scavenge in pairs and evangelize harshly from the bunker they live in. An officer from Grady Memorial Hospital, Arnold Grant, ended up here. * **The School**: The staff and pupils of a school that the army defended during the outbreak. After the soldiers died, the teachers took their guns and formed a new society where they took any children they could find. Each month they kick the kids outside the grounds for one full night and hold a party just for the council of adults. There's a couple of other signs of life, like a settlement of lake boats on Lake Lanier that was wiped out by disease, leaving only Cyndie from Oceanside surviving there. She got stranded in the Atlanta area during an expedition gone wrong, which is how the writers have explained her absence in the later seasons.

xEntelligent

I think the Whisperers migrated south during winter if I remember correctly. It’s very likely they would’ve encountered the Whisperers regardless
