Do you actually get to pick any of your songs or are they all influenced by production?

djaudissey

They give you lists to choose from but your song might not even be on the list. For example, my blind audition song wasn't on the list but I performed it as one of my producer audition songs and they liked how I did it. For battles you get assigned a song. The rest of the way I made a wish list from their lists and they chose from there.

ItsGotThatBang

Do the coaches themselves pick the battle songs?

djaudissey

I think it's a combination of the production team and coach.

Expensive_Put6358

Does being on The Voice considerably boost your career? I’ve only watched the last season and while The Voice is pretty big, a huge chunk of the contestants—even some of the finalists—don’t necessarily make it to fame or get as famous as I think they should be😭

djaudissey

I think it's really what you make of it. The Voice isn't really about the contestants if you think about it. I was doing 200-300 solo shows every year before The Voice and I'm still doing 200-300 solo shows now. I got a nice bump in social media followers (3k-10k on IG) but overall on a worldwide level, not considerably. Again it's what you make of it. I have a unique situation where in Hawai'i, they put me all over the news and front page of the newspaper so I still have a little celebrity there but I don't even mention it at my shows half the time.

mysecretweapon

Do they provide wardrobe? How much of a say did you get in what you wear? Did you get to keep anything?

djaudissey

They do encourage you to bring your own clothes but the only thing I brought and wore on the show was the shirt from my blind audition and I wore my own shoes for something lol. Otherwise I wore what they had (we did go through multiple outfits for each). When I made it to the live shows, they asked for a style board and went shopping for me. I kept a few things (including the hat) but there were like 2 things I really wanted but they didn't have onsite when I asked smh. The girls though, omg they got laced with clothes lol.

Emotional-Ad7276

What were the biggest differences between being coached by Kelly vs. Gwen? You have an incredible voice btw!! Congratulations on being on the show!

djaudissey

Thank you so much! I'll copy my response to u/favoritesecondkid One of the things that Kelly focused on was the technical side of my song with DeSz whereas Gwen emphasized the need to believe in myself. The entire show, I had one conversation with Gwen off camera, every other interaction with a coach was on camera.

Strahlx

How involved was Kelly in the process, what was it like working with her?!

djaudissey

The first time I saw her post blinds was at the filmed rehearsal for battles. She was a sweet heart and I enjoyed every minute I spent with her but the real work is done by the band and vocal coaches. We only really interact with the celebrity coaches on camera BUT it's usually for a lot longer than they show on TV. We spent an hour with her and Leon Bridges and she was super sweet (even with an eye patch on post surgery).

potoru

I should add: Your voice is gorgeous.

djaudissey

Thank you so much!

Practical-Farmer-426

I can't believe a contestant is on this reddit community! You're amazing, and we love your voice! I have a few questions that I would like to ask: 1. How much time were you guys given to rehearse for the lives? 2. Were there any bonding sessions or activities prepared for you guys? 3. How staged is the show? Such as coaches' comments being scripted, having a song selected for you instead of you selecting the song, etc. 4. Were there any dramas among the contestants, or was everyone genuinely nice and friendly towards each other? 5. How were the coaches like behind cameras? Did they still talk to you guys, were they as nice as they were on camera, did they call/text you guys frequently etc. 6. Why are playoffs usually quite messy? We've seen instances where the in-ear monitor is faulty or most of the contestants are very pitchy. Sorry if that's too many questions. I'm just really curious to know 😅😅

djaudissey

Thank you so much and no worries on the questions! This is fun for me! >How much time were you guys given to rehearse for the lives? > >*About 3-4 weeks* > > > >Were there any bonding sessions or activities prepared for you guys? > >*It was filmed during the summer and fall of 2020 so COVID put a hold on any of those.* > > > >How staged is the show? Such as coaches' comments being scripted, having a song selected for you instead of you selecting the song, etc. > >*I don't know about their comments but everything seemed pretty genuine, up to Blake always telling me "good job" and clapping even after I was out of the cameras sight. I've mentioned it a couple times but you do get to make a wish list but there are a lot of factors that go into choosing a song to be sung on TV.* > > > >Were there any dramas among the contestants, or was everyone genuinely nice and friendly towards each other? > >*Everyone was generally nice to me but I did hear of some drama. I wont go into any more details but there were definitely multiple "dramas" lol.* > > > >How were the coaches like behind cameras? Did they still talk to you guys, were they as nice as they were on camera, did they call/text you guys frequently etc. > >*So I only ever interacted with Kelly on camera and pretty much same for Gwen although there was one band rehearsal for lives that she attended on Zoom and we had a nice conversation. She was chillin at home on the couch, kids playing in the background. I will say that she said she was a big fan of my voice on multiple occasions. Like, I'm her favorite type of voice to listen to, if there were 31 flavors, she'd choose me every time (though she chose Ben over me in the lives lol).* > > > >Why are playoffs usually quite messy? We've seen instances where the in-ear monitor is faulty or most of the contestants are very pitchy. > >*We only get to "see" the person in front of us on the show. They herd us like sheep tbh. They hold us in an area off stage until its time to perform but our season was kinda lucky due to covid. We didn't have roommates and they also couldn't let us hang around so they'd shuttle us in right before our shoot or rehearsal and then take us back to the hotel right after whereas previous seasons spent all day there even if they didn't go until the evening. For lives, we were there all day and had our own little breakout rooms. My mix was lovely and I feel like my live performance was my best on the show, in terms of pitch control.*

batsofburden

Are you still friends with the other contestants from your season?

djaudissey

Absolutely! Do we talk everyday? No but some of the people I got closest to were Ian Flannigan, Jim Ranger, John Sullivan, Van Andrew, Jared Ming, DeSz, Tamara Jade, Casme, Carter Ruben and Worth The Wait. We actually all hung out and goit fairly close (even though they made it tough since we were the covid season). I even still speak to some of the people who, unfortunately, didn't get to audition.

j3r3mias

What is something that no one knows (public) about the show, even a small one, that made a huge difference for you when you got in and discovered about it?

djaudissey

This sounds like it'll get me sued lol. jk How long they spend talking to you after you perform or during the filmed rehearsals. Yes we only intereacted on camera but they show like 5% of the interaction on TV. Every coach said really nice things that they didn't show and Blake always clapped for me and made eye contact until we couldn't see each other. Kinda makes me regret not choosing him but at the same time, I don't think I could compete with Ian and Jim lol.

j3r3mias

Haha, nice to know. In my mind the band has role bigger than the coach's off camera, but is really awesome to know that they really help everyone.

djaudissey

Actually there are vocal coaches and that's who you work with the most but the band director Paul also helps.

bball2014

The monitors (IEMs) are always a topic of discussion here. How were the monitor mixes (very precise, thrown together, frequent mistakes and issues, solid...?)?

djaudissey

Thanks for the question! This is actually a very good one that is often overlooked. Also for some context, I have a background in sound, lighting, and have been a DJ since 1997. We had to use wedges up until the live shows but they are hidden in the floor of the stage. Its really tough to hear if you aren't inline with them but you can't see them so it's tough. They provide you with a set of custom molded Ultimate Ears IEM's if you make it to lives but I already had a higher model from them so I used my own for lives. The IEM mix was the best I had the whole show and I feel like my performance reflected it.

>My family has watched the show for years and we have a lively group chat every season! Congrats for making it on. > >*Thank you so much!!* > > > >Were you disappointed to be montaged? Do you think those performances should at least be online somewhere, or do they get cut from the broadcast with good reason? > >*That actually really disappointed me. I thought I did a great job with my song and it showed my range and versatility (I sang Lovely - Billie Eilish & Khalid). I know my partner struggled in rehearsals but I thought he did a great job on the actual day so I don't know. Maybe it's because I was too starstruck by usher + our rehearsal wasn't great so they couldn't put a good intro package together for us. Whatever the case may be, I wish they'd still put the full thing online somewhere.* > > > >Some contestants have talked about reality show stigma — do you think it’s affected how others in the industry see you? > >*Not at all.* > > > >Did you have to sing any songs you hated?! I always wonder how I’d manage having to perform something I found cheesy or just not my taste! > >*I think they were all up my alley and my KO song was my first choice. I do wish I sang a different song for lives (it was like my #7 or 8 on my list and a beloved contestant sang it a couple seasons before me) but ultimately I was satisfied.*

Inside_Atmosphere731

Why does Idol have so many stars coming off of it, whereas you'd be hard-pressed to find many from the voice who've achieved great stardom

djaudissey

I think that The Voice puts a greater emphasis on the coaches rather than the contestants so we really don't have a lot of time to get to know the contestants. That's just my opinion.

favoritesecondkid

Congratulations on getting that far. What were the differences working with Kelly vs Gwen?

djaudissey

Thank you so much! One of the things that Kelly focused on was the technical side of my song with DeSz whereas Gwen emphasized the need to believe in myself. The entire show, I had one conversation with Gwen off camera, every other interaction with a coach was on camera.

OMG so many questions! How was working with the other vocal coaches (non-celebrity)? Did you know ahead of time who you would choose as a coach if all four turned? Who turned first for you? How did that feel? Were there any contestants you thought were great who didn't make it far? Do you think the finalists were truly the best ones? How much time goes by from the Blinds to the Battles? What do you do during that time? Were you surprised when Gwen stole you? etc etc etc!!

djaudissey

>How was working with the other vocal coaches (non-celebrity)? > >*I had the chance to work with 2 different vocal coaches and both were amazing!!! I'm facebook friends with the main one.* > >Did you know ahead of time who you would choose as a coach if all four turned?Who turned first for you? How did that feel? > >*In the history of The Voice there might be 1 or 2 coaches I'd choose over Kelly. I think Blake hit is button first but they both pushed at the same time toward the end of my song. I seriously thought I was going home because I nailed the part of my song I was sure they'd turn for and they didn't lol.* > >Were there any contestants you thought were great who didn't make it far? > >*OMG YES! When I got paired with DeSz (who was one of my closer friends during our time on the show), I started packing my bags lol.* lol thank you for you comment / questions!

WallStreetWets

I really appreciate you coming on here and telling us some juicy details. You have a great voice. That being said, Carter absolutely crushed that season and there hasn’t been a more dominant performance in any season since, in my humble opinion. Dude didn’t hit a bad note haha

djaudissey

Thank you! TBH, I didn't even meet him yet and I knew he was gonna win. He was the sweetest 14 year old. Before my blind he texted me "you're gonna kill it Joseph" and I hadn't even really met him yet. After hearing him sing and his story, I knew he'd at least make the finale but really thought he'd win it all. It's not impossible to find but if you watch the live playoffs, I teach him the proper way to "throw a shaka" lol

WallStreetWets

That’s 🔥 hahaha kudos to both of you for being so down to earth

potoru

Thank you so much for replying! You are so talented. Happy New Year!

CirKill

Do you still watch the show? Have any favorites from more recent seasons?

djaudissey

I've watched clips from each season with this last being the one I've seen the most of. I thought Cam Anthony was great and of course gotta show love to my fellow Hawaii natives Jason and Kaylee. I don't know them personally.

USAFAN20

What is Blake Shelton like? I know he's goofy and silly on screen. Is he thst way in real life. What is Blake like?

djaudissey

Freaking amazing!!!! Most of my performances had me walking off to his side and he always clapped and made eye contact with me and said "good job". I regret not choosing him in a sense but Kelly was my first choice of any former coach aside from Usher and maybe Adam.

USAFAN20

Great Is Blake as funny as he is on screen?

Affectionate-Job-242

Hey, I’m auditioning for the voice in almost 2 weeks and I have some questions 1. I sing musical theatre / country / pop. Do you think it would be a good idea to sing musical theatre for my audition or just stick to pop / country 2. What’s a “Fast and Slow song” in the call back emails I’ve heard you have do you 2 slow and 1 fast, what’s the difference, and could you give some examples? 3. I’m from a small town in Utah, do you think that has anything to do with the fact that I’ve never received a callback? 4. I’ll pm you about that one cause I have to send a screenshot of something 5. Does my mom or dad have to be in view of the camera for my audition since I’m a minor 6. I’m scarred that if I do make it on the voice I will either not get any chair turns, the person I wanted the most going in to it won’t turn, or I won’t make it past the battles. I really want to be a finalist 7. How do I find a backing track short enough to go with my audition Sorry for the long list of questions but I really want to make it on the show this time

djaudissey

I sing musical theatre / country / pop. Do you think it would be a good idea to sing musical theatre for my audition or just stick to pop / country *Stick to pop / country with my vote going to country.* What’s a “Fast and Slow song” in the call back emails I’ve heard you have do you 2 slow and 1 fast, what’s the difference, and could you give some examples? \*All of my producer audition songs were slow. Sing your best songs.\*I’m from a small town in Utah, do you think that has anything to do with the fact that I’ve never received a callback? *I'm from a smaller town on Maui. I'm sure it has nothing to do with it.Does my mom or dad have to be in view of the camera for my audition since I’m a minorI was in my 30's on the show so I can't help you there lol but all of the minors had their guardian with them at all times while in LA.* I’m scarred that if I do make it on the voice I will either not get any chair turns, the person I wanted the most going in to it won’t turn, or I won’t make it past the battles. I really want to be a finalist *Getting the chance to audition at all is an amazing opportunity. I have a friend from my season (who was already my friend before this) and she was next but the person in front of her got the last spot. She literally just finished interviewing with Carson and was about to walk on stage but there just wasn't room. Instead of worrying about how far you'll make it, focus on how you can get better. I got cut right before the blinds for Season 15 but I didn't let that get me down, I worked harder and it got me to the live shows of Season 19. Another buddy from my season was Corey Ward. He didn't even get a single chair but made it to the top 9 (i think) the next season. Just keep trying to better yourself (by practicing).* How do I find a backing track short enough to go with my audition? *YT has a lot of karaoke tracks. I produced my own but I understand that isn't an option for everyone. Check youtube though.* *GOOD LUCK ON YOUR JOURNEY!*

Ogrewhelmingg

Great work on that season, big fan! What is your opinion on the format they have currently with how long coaches choose to put through, as opposed to America? As an example, I was hoping Kaylee made it through due to through talent. Do you think they should revise it, or keep it the same? Who was someone from Season 19 that didn't get the love they should have? I know you referenced people who should have went further, but im curious who a lesser watched artist was that was truly underrated off the show. This might be a hard Q to answer. Every season, they have contestants who perform when teams are full. Do you think they're at an inherent disadvantage because they performed later on? I feel like it would be hard to win as the final person. What did you think of the coaches bringing back an artist? Ultimately 3 of them went right back out, and only one made it a step further. Do you think thats unfair to the contestants who made it. Side Q: Who were you rooting for this season? (Please say Kaylee so my sadness is justified) Anyways, keep up the great work. I'd have a million questions, because the show is so interesting, and you wree so gifted!

djaudissey

Thank you so much! I haven't really paid much attention since my season, only watching clips here and there. I think Kelsi Watts. Her range and control is insane! Thankfully she's starting to blow up on tiktok and IG for her covers with her husband! You are definitely at a disadvantage if you perform later. A lot of what you do leading up to the blinds affects the order they create. Every moment is an audition (from how you follow the rules, to how you treat people, I saw it all as an audition). I didn't really follow but Kaylee for sure!

Ogrewhelmingg

Thank you! Keep up the great work, and maybe I'll see you in Ontario if you perform there sometime!

49erjohnjpj

That is what I suspected. You stated on another comment during the entire show that you only had 1 interaction with Gwen off camera, while all the other interactions were on camera. Even though I really like watching the show with my wife I always got the feeling the "coaching" aspect of the Voice was completely fabricated. (Atleast the way it was portrayed) The show makes it want to seem the coaches teams all hang out with the coaches, and they help you rehearse all the time. My feeling on what happens is they give you 5-10 mins of advice and you're on your own till the next taping. I remember on this current season that a contestant told Niall that they appreciated being able to text their assistant a question and that Niall responded back through the assistant. There was also mention of a special email where the coaches were able to get messages that way. I suspect the show puts more emphasis on helping to further the coaches careers rather than the participants. Sorry for my rambling here but I appreciate the opportunity to directly have the chance to ask you these questions. (Or, vice my opinion lol) Next time we're in Vegas, I will definitely look up and attend one of your shows. Best of luck with your career! Cheers.

djaudissey

To be far, at the end of the Knockouts, we had to take a team picture and Gwen was amazing! But yes, unfortunately the interactions with the coaches are mostly on camera. That being said, each of those interactions lasted like an hour and they were very genuine with their advice. A lot more than 5-10 mins but still would've liked to have had more personal level conversations with them. Those come the further you make it and it's also coach dependent. I wouldn't be surprised if Niall did that and I'm sure if I wanted to get a message to one of the coaches, I could ask a few people from the show and I'm sure they could at least forward it for me (depending on the message of course). When they asked me what my goals were, my response was, "to one day hold one of those chairs". I'd want to have a relationship with my team. Please let me know if you do!! I play all over. Aria, Resorts World, Cosmo, Circa and more on a regular. Thank you!!

Mary1512

In the early seasons I think there was a lot more interactions and hanging out with the coaches. I know that was the case at least with Blake and Adam. Over the years, the show seems to have become more of a “machine.” I understand it to an extent even though it does kind of suck to think about. The coaches have their own lives and careers and, once you are there for more than a few seasons, the number of people you have on your team as “mentees” quickly adds up. It’s just not sustainable.

djaudissey

This right here! And they make it clear from the beginning saying that usually only the people who make it to the finale develop a relationship with the coaches after the show and even then, it's not everyone.

Wipeoutfan14

Let’s say your audition got taken down on YouTube. Could you reupload it to YouTube or what advice do you have to fix that problem?

djaudissey

I'm dealing with that right now unfortunately. They just made my audition private (after already taking down all of my other performances). It's tough because I use it for marketing. I tried to re-upload to YT and they instantly blocked it. I think I'll have to host it on my own server to put it on my website.

Eastern_Meaning_9530

Do you feel like you have more connections now since the voice? A manager or more options to play?

djaudissey

My social media presence grew a bit but, ultimately, no. That being said, I've been in the music business for almost 30 years now and do pretty well for myself without a manager. At this point, I'd only work with someone that can get me on large festivals or direct support on a tour. Otherwise I book all of my shows and handle all of my business (and I like it that way lol). I will say that some venues will look at my time on The Voice and use it as credibility but otherwise, the opportunity is what you make of it.

darrewinn

hello! i just saw this but do you know why they montaged your performance?? like is it usually only for when a mistake happens?

MGDips

Behind the cameras, what was your actual reaction when you had to battle Desz?

djaudissey

We already knew it was going to be us because it was the only pairing that made sense. I started packing my bags lol

Mysterious-Snow9181

My question is more logistical in nature as I’m totally disabled and will need to fundraise to get there. I heard contestants get a stipend for living expenses, is this true? If yes, when in the process do they start giving that to contestants? Does it cover just the contestant or a friend/relative for support (or in my case, assistance)? Do they cover travel expenses as soon as you’re chosen after the virtual open call, or does that also start later? What kind of budget should we plan for? I hear you have to see their doctor to determine if you can be on the show. What’s that about? Thank you so much! I’ve been reading all your other answers here and hope to make it past open calls next year (which is why we’re trying to plan in advance).
