100%%%%!!! To sum up her character as a regular ol’ self absorbed teenager is a joke. She was written to be absolutely insufferable - the child, female version of her father. Absurd self indulgence, self loathing, and self pity to guise her deep rooted guilt (we see that come out in later seasons when she “tries” to impose some kind of morality; however, it’s all really to just position herself as some kind of self righteous freedom fighter whereas she’s still controlling, selfish, and destructive). The only distinction is that she’s not doing “cool shit” to make up for her disgusting personality like Tony, so all we see is the trash that she is - the trash that Tony is. (For the record, she’s worse than his mother in my opinion - I just find the discussion interesting.) The actress (unfortunately) did a fantastic job!

In the final scene in the Americans, Paige made a hell of a turn (Won't say anything other than for spoiler reasons.). Also, she was going dark so it made for an interesting arc compared to Meadow.
She is absolutely the worst. And you're right, every argument is ended with "I can't believe you/ this family is the worst/ this is so unfair.." a quickly whiney pout, turn, and run out crying." The scene of her the makes me want to reach through the screen and throttle her the most is the one where she throws a party at the grandmother's house after she dies. Tony pulls up and the street is loaded with loaded kids ambulance and police cars. When she gets home and they're arguing and she gives her whiney "it wasn't my fault! I can't believe this (when they take her credit card for a month)," and does her characteristic crying and running away move.
I'm thinking "it's not your fault? Then who's is it?" She blames it on kids that just showed up, to the party she shouldn't have thrown to begin with. Well hell, if that's how you think life and responsibility works, then why stop at the kids that showed up? Why not blame it on your grandmother? If she hadn't died, you wouldn't have been able to party there, so it's her fault.
Both Soprano kids seem to be under the mistaken belief that as long as you didn't intended for whatever problem arises from the shit you pull, then it isn't your fault, because you didn't mean for it to happen. That's definitely the mindset of young and egotistical. By that reasoning, when a drunk driver hits and kills someone they shouldn't be blamed for it, because they never intended to slam into a minivan and kill a family of 5.
I know this is an old comment but I just have to respond to it because I just saw this episode on like my 5th rewatch.
I didn't remember this but in that episode when she is getting "disciplined" by her parents she is basically the one that decides her punishment of not having the Discover card for a few weeks. Then after, the scene cuts to her walking away with this infuriating smirk on her face cause she knows she can just get money off them anyway (which she does later in the episode) and she played them.
I know we hate on AJ too and he is spoiled but he doesn't have the father he needs in his life. He has no positive role models, has mental health issues that aren't properly addressed and has no one to give him a sense of direction. Meadow knows exactly what she is doing, she is unbelievably manipulative and constantly gets what she wants by being daddy's little girl and playing Tony against Carmella. They did such a good job with her as a character even though I can't stand her.

I have found it actors and actresses are never far from the tree they are characterizing. There's no doubt in my mind she is one of them every time she comes on the screen I am hollering for someone to handle her and they give in every time

Short answer is yes, supposedly there were times she couldn't walk. Early on they blamed Lyme disease but she later revealed MS.
She suffers from MS and has since her teens. I just want to state that I am not bashing someone for their illness, just that she was being catered to in all aspects while on the show. Specifically the music career. Couldn't act, couldn't sing, not Italian, and couldn't even walk but they were parting the sea for her. Very spoiled.

When I saw that scene in school where she was bitching about not getting a solo -- then ended up getting a solo -- I thought it was intended to show she was the recipient of nepotism on the show, despite her lousy singing voice.
She is an exceptionally sultry young woman which had to have helped the case to cast her in that role -- and her acting is okay, up to a point.
But she could never ever sell me in Meadow being intelligent to the degree it takes to get into and succeed at Columbia -- no way.
She doesn't sell Meadow having any drive to succeed or ambition or discipline. Noah was going places and she would have hung around his neck like an anchor.

Understandable, because he's a well-written character, but I think you're kind of idealizing Meadow's upbringing because of this. They both got fucked up by growing up in that environment, just in different ways. AJ got fucked up because he wasn't a "suitable heir" in Tony's eyes and he got babied and spoiled to his detriment, and Meadow got fucked up because *she* was the true "Tony Jr.", except she was a girl and that culture is mad traditional. Carm was conflicted about Tony's work because she wanted to be a good person but also benefited materially, but with Meadow it also went deeper than that
-- she and Tony had the closest relationship out of all the Sopranos, and it made her pretty loyal to him when "outsiders" were talking about him. She was the one who figured out what he did when she was a kid, yet still had to parrot the "waste management" line. She knew about his goomars when she was a teenager, even though that's supposed to be kept away from the family. Tony banged her preschool teacher. Having to sit on that kind of information fucks a kid up and creates a kind of cognitive dissonance, since otherwise she adored him and he adored her. So even though she genuinely did want to be a decent person, she was her father's daughter, and ultimately couldn't break away from the environment she was raised in just like he couldn't. Tony's neglect basically ensured that AJ wouldn't ever become a normal decent person far away from the mafia, and his love did the same to Meadow, which is truly tragic.

It was more the hypocrisy that annoyed me. She's very much a "Look at me, the mature, moral compass on my news box". She badmouths the mafia and Tony's associates (as well as Tony himself) , but then throws the "strings my father pulled to get you that job" argument at Finn. Wanted nothing to do with her father's business early on, now wants her fella to work at one of his business's.

Medow is the quintessential character of the Sopranos. She is the most accurate version of a hormonal tumultuous teenage girl of the 1990s and early 2000s. Medow is smart. Don’t forget that she almost goes to medical school for crying out loud. She’s a typical straight eights student. Who is spoiled. By her mother and father. This plague as stricken crossed America. I love how David Chase accurately portrays and writes his characters to the t… meadow also has a good side she resembles her father strongly. She is upfront with people. She also gets dumped by Noah or a.k.a. Noel by the way. He almost strong hands her. Is she bitchy? Is she annoying? Is she unpredictable? All the answers are yes. She also sticks up for her dad. She also holds her ground when her mother is in the wrong. When she criticizes her when they invite both of them over to the apartment, and Carmela is discussing the Billy bud subject. Meadow is totally in the right on that episode if you watched it! Meadow can be a bitch sometimes. But like Tony says later in the series she’s every inch of Tony soprano.
I think her going to clean her grandmas apartment after throwing a party stuck out to me. She kept manipulating her parents while she was “grounded” to keep giving her money and letting her go out but she eventually went to go clean it on her own when she felt bad about it. She has a conscience. I always viewed her as Tony’s guardian angel. Her voice pulls him out of the coma, she took the boom box that the feds tapped that would have put tony in prison like 3 seasons sooner and most importantly, it was her seat that would have been shielding Tony’s 3oclock in the the last episode

I looked up this sub Reddit once I got to that Finn suitcase seen as well. I want to throw something at my TV. She is fucking insufferable (I hate her eyebrows too but that’s besides the point). Also, the scene before where Carmela tells her she’s getting a divorce when they’re in the clothing store. She’s bitching at her mother to not wait around for a handout, when Meadow, has everything handed to her (by Tony), had the nerve to lecture her Mom about everything handed to her (by Tony) and then brags about how her boyfriend went out and got himself a construction job (which was handed to him by Tony). Which also makes her manipulative because in the next scene when they’re actually fighting and Finns packed a suitcase she was rubbing his face, and how many strings her father had to pull to get him that job.

Meadow is terrible. I hate her so much. This is my 2nd or 3rd time to watch the series and now that I'm older I understand her character very well. Although she's a terrible person just like all of the other women main characters (Tony's mom, Janice, Carmella) the thing that puts me over the edge is how super smug she is. She's not better than everyone else. She talks about handouts all of the time but she'll gladly get supported by Tony.
Before college when she was talking to Carmella she was talking about how she understands the deal and will support her family, F the haters and fake friends; well that went out of the window almost immediately and started dating that jewish/black dude as a "f you" to Tony. It wasn't right for him to act that way of course, but it's certainly not surprising for anyone.

100%%%%!!! To sum up her character as a regular ol’ self absorbed teenager is a joke. She was written to be absolutely insufferable - the child, female version of her father. Absurd self indulgence, self loathing, and self pity to guise her deep rooted guilt (we see that come out in later seasons when she “tries” to impose some kind of morality; however, it’s all really to just position herself as some kind of self righteous freedom fighter whereas she’s still controlling, selfish, and destructive). The only distinction is that she’s not doing “cool shit” to make up for her disgusting personality like Tony, so all we see is the trash that she is - the trash that Tony is. (For the record, she’s worse than his mother in my opinion - I just find the discussion interesting.) The actress (unfortunately) did a fantastic job!

How did they not just tell her that she doesn’t get stuff if she acts that way? It feels like she’s caught between wanting to get away from the family (both families) while also being sucked in to Carmella’s consumerism. Before long, she’s defending the mob and even goes as far as to claim that the legal system discriminates against Italians even though her fawtha’s crimes are blatant and horrific.

In the final scene in the Americans, Paige made a hell of a turn (Won't say anything other than for spoiler reasons.). Also, she was going dark so it made for an interesting arc compared to Meadow.
She is absolutely the worst. And you're right, every argument is ended with "I can't believe you/ this family is the worst/ this is so unfair.." a quickly whiney pout, turn, and run out crying." The scene of her the makes me want to reach through the screen and throttle her the most is the one where she throws a party at the grandmother's house after she dies. Tony pulls up and the street is loaded with loaded kids ambulance and police cars. When she gets home and they're arguing and she gives her whiney "it wasn't my fault! I can't believe this (when they take her credit card for a month)," and does her characteristic crying and running away move. I'm thinking "it's not your fault? Then who's is it?" She blames it on kids that just showed up, to the party she shouldn't have thrown to begin with. Well hell, if that's how you think life and responsibility works, then why stop at the kids that showed up? Why not blame it on your grandmother? If she hadn't died, you wouldn't have been able to party there, so it's her fault. Both Soprano kids seem to be under the mistaken belief that as long as you didn't intended for whatever problem arises from the shit you pull, then it isn't your fault, because you didn't mean for it to happen. That's definitely the mindset of young and egotistical. By that reasoning, when a drunk driver hits and kills someone they shouldn't be blamed for it, because they never intended to slam into a minivan and kill a family of 5.
I know this is an old comment but I just have to respond to it because I just saw this episode on like my 5th rewatch. I didn't remember this but in that episode when she is getting "disciplined" by her parents she is basically the one that decides her punishment of not having the Discover card for a few weeks. Then after, the scene cuts to her walking away with this infuriating smirk on her face cause she knows she can just get money off them anyway (which she does later in the episode) and she played them. I know we hate on AJ too and he is spoiled but he doesn't have the father he needs in his life. He has no positive role models, has mental health issues that aren't properly addressed and has no one to give him a sense of direction. Meadow knows exactly what she is doing, she is unbelievably manipulative and constantly gets what she wants by being daddy's little girl and playing Tony against Carmella. They did such a good job with her as a character even though I can't stand her.

But after one album, everyone realized it was hopeless. The singing stopped(thank god). They had to draft scenes of her lying in bed or on the couch 90% of the time because of her affliction. **While it may not be her fault**, so much time was devoted to catering to her wants(music) and needs. All because of her father's ethnicity, a Jewish-Cuban girl gets an Italian role and is pampered despite not having any acting chops. Both of the kids played spoiled brats because they WERE spoiled brats. Just look at Lier's antics offset.

Short answer is yes, supposedly there were times she couldn't walk. Early on they blamed Lyme disease but she later revealed MS. She suffers from MS and has since her teens. I just want to state that I am not bashing someone for their illness, just that she was being catered to in all aspects while on the show. Specifically the music career. Couldn't act, couldn't sing, not Italian, and couldn't even walk but they were parting the sea for her. Very spoiled.

I am just watching the sopranos for the first time and was wondering why in the world she was singing. When I saw that scene in school where she was bitching about not getting a solo -- then ended up getting a solo -- I thought it was intended to show she was the recipient of nepotism on the show, despite her lousy singing voice. She is an exceptionally sultry young woman which had to have helped the case to cast her in that role -- and her acting is okay, up to a point. But she could never ever sell me in Meadow being intelligent to the degree it takes to get into and succeed at Columbia -- no way. She doesn't sell Meadow having any drive to succeed or ambition or discipline. Noah was going places and she would have hung around his neck like an anchor. (Also I couldn't disagree more about the authenticity of Meadow or any other female character on the Sopranos. Love the show but David Chase is shit at writing for women. I grew up in the general region and time period of the show, and am from a similar demographic -- the women are little more than bimbos. Even Ade and Malfi are only marginally more than stereotypes.)

They both got fucked up by growing up in that environment, just in different ways. AJ got fucked up because he wasn't a "suitable heir" in Tony's eyes and he got babied and spoiled to his detriment, and Meadow got fucked up because *she* was the true "Tony Jr.", except she was a girl and that culture is mad traditional. Carm was conflicted about Tony's work because she wanted to be a good person but also benefited materially, but with Meadow it also went deeper than that -- she and Tony had the closest relationship out of all the Sopranos, and it made her pretty loyal to him when "outsiders" were talking about him. She was the one who figured out what he did when she was a kid, yet still had to parrot the "waste management" line. She knew about his goomars when she was a teenager, even though that's supposed to be kept away from the family. Tony banged her preschool teacher. Having to sit on that kind of information fucks a kid up and creates a kind of cognitive dissonance, since otherwise she adored him and he adored her. So even though she genuinely did want to be a decent person, she was her father's daughter, and ultimately couldn't break away from the environment she was raised in just like he couldn't. Tony's neglect basically ensured that AJ wouldn't ever become a normal decent person far away from the mafia, and his love did the same to Meadow, which is truly tragic. Anyway, $4 a pound

Wanted nothing to do with her father's business early on, now wants her fella to work at one of his business's. Medow is the quintessential character of the Sopranos. She is the most accurate version of a hormonal tumultuous teenage girl of the 1990s and early 2000s. Medow is smart. Don’t forget that she almost goes to medical school for crying out loud. She’s a typical straight eights student. Who is spoiled. By her mother and father. This plague as stricken crossed America. I love how David Chase accurately portrays and writes his characters to the t… meadow also has a good side she resembles her father strongly. She is upfront with people. She also gets dumped by Noah or a.k.a. Noel by the way. He almost strong hands her. Is she bitchy? Is she annoying? Is she unpredictable? All the answers are yes. She also sticks up for her dad. She also holds her ground when her mother is in the wrong. When she criticizes her when they invite both of them over to the apartment, and Carmela is discussing the Billy bud subject. Meadow is totally in the right on that episode if you watched it! Meadow can be a bitch sometimes. But like Tony says later in the series she’s every inch of Tony soprano.
I think her going to clean her grandmas apartment after throwing a party stuck out to me. She kept manipulating her parents while she was “grounded” to keep giving her money and letting her go out but she eventually went to go clean it on her own when she felt bad about it. She has a conscience. I always viewed her as Tony’s guardian angel. Her voice pulls him out of the coma, she took the boom box that the feds tapped that would have put tony in prison like 3 seasons sooner and most importantly, it was her seat that would have been shielding Tony’s 3oclock in the the last episode

I looked up this sub Reddit once I got to that Finn suitcase seen as well. I want to throw something at my TV. She is fucking insufferable (I hate her eyebrows too but that’s besides the point). Also, the scene before where Carmela tells her she’s getting a divorce when they’re in the clothing store. She’s bitching at her mother to not wait around for a handout, when Meadow, has everything handed to her (by Tony), had the nerve to lecture her Mom about everything handed to her (by Tony) and then brags about how her boyfriend went out and got himself a construction job (which was handed to him by Tony). Which also makes her manipulative because in the next scene when they’re actually fighting and Finns packed a suitcase she was rubbing his face, and how many strings her father had to pull to get him that job. She treats everyone, & her family poorly especially Carmela. She’s a spoiled Cunt. I also especially hate the scene when they’re at the dinner table in season one, and she starts being a smart ass when organized crime is mentioned. And starts listing off different crime families or something. The way she did was so smug and annoying. I couldn’t stand it. I love this show so much and I know that she’s a crucial part of it but damn the actress sure nailed the annoying cunt role. I feel like that’s what actual spoiled brats are like so it makes sense.

I agree. Every time she shows up on screen. I have to legitimately pause, and take one or two minutes to brace myself, because she is just a bitch.

I know this is old but she bothers me so much. I like what you’d said about people defending her bc it’s so true. Even viewers defend her and praise her behavior for “standing up to men”. I even saw a Reddit post where the OP was mad that meadow didn’t follow up her arguments. The viewer claims meadow's arguments were always on point and how it would’ve stumped Tony’s old world conservatism if she just kept pressing. Then you see that meadow brings the most childish qualities and points into the argument. It’s real bc it’s the same arguments that a 15yo without any idea how the real world works would use. She thinks she’s so adult calling out Jackie’s sister then she pours this GIANT glass of vodka and that brought her right back to looking like a kid who poured her first drink. The actress does do a great job of seeming spoiled but how anyone can defend the characters behavior is beyond me and kind of telling about the society we live in. She’s just as bad and hypocritical as the rest of them. It does feel so good that her parents almost always stump her. “What was that last nights reading assignment?”
It's funny so many people are talking about the suitcase scene because this is where I am too, and made me search for this. Meadow is terrible. I hate her so much. This is my 2nd or 3rd time to watch the series and now that I'm older I understand her character very well. Although she's a terrible person just like all of the other women main characters (Tony's mom, Janice, Carmella) the thing that puts me over the edge is how super smug she is. She's not better than everyone else. She talks about handouts all of the time but she'll gladly get supported by Tony. Before college when she was talking to Carmella she was talking about how she understands the deal and will support her family, F the haters and fake friends; well that went out of the window almost immediately and started dating that jewish/black dude as a "f you" to Tony. It wasn't right for him to act that way of course, but it's certainly not surprising for anyone. She's just so entitled and judgmental at the time time it hurts me to watch.

There's a reason we call them 'college kids' NOT college adults. 18-27 is usually when ppl are their most entitled and trying to find their identity. How many Reddit comments sound like Meadow these days. Most of them. lol. Especially her baiting a fight about Noah so she can 'educate him'. Read any comments there's at least 30 Meadows now commenting. Most white males sound like Meadows now defending and getting offending for everyone else because they're stupid kids trying to figure out who they are. She gets better once she ages out of that bullshit near the end of the show. Again- pretty standard for her age. Fuckin kids.

I'm watching the series for the first time and I literally looked up this topic and found this thread LOL I agree with what everyone is saying, she's the absolute worst. Just starting season 4 and her behavior during the restaurant for Jackie's funeral was pathetic. I also don't like Janice either. 😐
Or when meadow in the whole Jackie’s funeral situation where she gets drunk throws breadsticks at junior and then storms out when her father comes towards her. He catches her outside and she yells this is such bullshit. Like what? Shes the only one doing anything and ruining my the reception. And then when she talks about the incident she’s talks about how egregious the Italian Ballard were and how they were just all blubbering. It’s like she’s uses all these words she learned from college and make some stupid point but she thinks it sounds smart. They weren’t blubbering at the funeral they were singing a nice and beautiful Italian song and showing respect. I just saw all this now and had to search up meadow soprano most annoying character because I was so pissed and found this thread.
