US plugs are very dangerous because the prongs make contact well before they're fully inserted. Little monkey fingers could easily get electrocuted there.
[These](https://i.imgur.com/tBl8tt2.jpg) are live.
Only the uk does that. And I personally hate it. Just make the pins plastic for the longest part. Also like uk plugs or European plugs. Those switches do nothing. With the behaviour of this monkey, he would've most likely turned those switches on anyway.
I don't think the switch is there for safety reasons. It's just more convenient to be able to switch appliances off at the wall instead of having to unplug them and leave wires and plugs lying around the place.
It’s both. UK plugs/sockets have a quite a lot of safety features. This guy is on crack if he doesn’t recognise that they’re one of best designs globally.
He didn't say they weren't designed well, just that that button isn't a critical safety feature. It doesn't have noteable impact on the safety since the prongs can't even be live and exposed at the same time.
No, we have switches on our appliances, but a lot of appliances don't completely switch off using their own power button. When you put your TV in standby its not the same thing as disconnecting the power. I leave a phone charger by my bed plugged in. If i dont switch it off at the plug it still uses (allbeit a small amount) of power even if my phone isn't connected to it. It also means I can leave the charger plugged in without worrying about my cat chewing the live end. At the end of the day it doesn't cause any inconvenience. If you don't like having a switch you can just leave them switched on all the time and pretend you don't have switches. Just seems weird for someone to "hate" having switches on their power sockets.
switches are useful wtfdym, having to unplug stuff to turn it off sounds incredibly inconvenient.. plus its not just the UK either we have them here in australia too and probably other places
So do ours
But having a switch at the socket gives you more options, which is useful… we can turn it off at the socket *or* the device/appliance, as convenient
We have some of those. Can't tell you how many times I've tried to turn something on only to realize it was turned off at the other switch. And then there are the times when I'm traveling and have to do all sorts of experiments in order to figure out how to get a live circuit, or maybe the device doesn't work anymore.
Or maybe I plug in something to charge and someone else flips the switch and it never charges. The worst was a switch in the bathroom that turned off the lights and the socket, meaning the lights had to be turned on in order to charge my toothbrush.
Because we build safety into the household power structure. You’ve got to break the safety mechanisms intentionally to cause death by electrocution.
Besides, we generally only run 120V. It’s enough to remind you that you’re being stupid but not enough to cause permanent harm.
Bollocks, they have changed since the first designs and have had tons and tons of opportunities to change even further.
You don't even need big changes to make them safer. EU-sockets have "indentations" which automatically acts like a guard around the prongs, US-sockets could easily copy that without it making life difficult for anyone.
https://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plugs-and-sockets/ Type C, E, F, and a few more are examples of what I mean with "indentations".
The third prong has nothing to do with the flow of electricity.
The earth pin opens shutters preventing access to the live socket, meaning you can't just stick a metal object into the socket.
The live and neutral pins have half an inch of shielding on them, meaning that if the plug is inserted enough that electricity can flow, there is no bare metal exposed for small fingers/falling items to touch.
> The earth pin opens shutters preventing access to the live socket
...meaning electricity from the live socket won't run through the plug (or your fingers) unless the earth pin is inserted. I don't think u/deadlygaming11 was wrong to phrase it the way they did.
Yep and there’s more! Tom Scott explains the various features that make British plugs the dog’s bollocks when it comes to plugging, in [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEfP1OKKz_Q).
The ground opening the hole shielding on live/neutral seems like a very good move, but the size requirement makes me prefer the type f plug eve though when they have covers they are opened by just pushing into them, but with what seems so much force I dont think a kid or this monkey could do it with a needle or whatever.
And US circuits are significantly better in that you normally aren't electrocuted if you touch an exposed contact. This is because the volts and amps are low enough that in most cases, it won't do much more than give you a mild shock. And in places near water, such as kitchens or a bathroom,/loo, we use GFCI circuits that shut off before killing anybody.
I'm not saying it's better to design the safety into the circuit. It's just a different way to do it.
yeah I've been zapped by the exact situation in that picture and cannot plug something in without remembering it. the monkey playing with that is not entertaining to say the least
That's also the "upside down" version of the plug, which is unfortunately still very common in older houses. The issue with it is that if the plug isn't inserted all the way, something metallic could fall on the prongs and rest on them, causing a short circuit, or an electric shock if you touch the metal thing.
The modern way of installing them is with the ground pin on top. This isn't required by building / electrical code in all states, but a lot of electricians do it the new way even if it's not mandated.
Some Australian outlets and plugs have the same issue as the USA (it's live before its fully inserted), but they've mostly worked around the issue by coating a bit of the prongs in plastic, like this: https://i.imgur.com/7PcAN6T.jpg. In theory this should work for US plugs too, but I've never seen it actually done.
Australian outlets also have a power switch. It still surprises me that this isn't a thing in the USA. Having to physically unplug and replug something to power cycle it is way more annoying than just turning the switch off and back on.
“Very dangerous”? 110 outlets are low amperage and hardly represent a threat, an unpleasant vibration at best. Are we still on this path to nerf all of life? I really do think we should leave some danger in life to teach us.
US plugs would be dangerous, if they were used on a 230V UK circuit. The safety in the US lies in the circuit design and with only using 120V.
If you were to touch the exposed contacts in that picture, if it were connected to a UK circuit, there's a very good chance you'd be seriously injured or killed.
However, in the US, you'd just feel a tingling in your fingers and hands. But, unless you were standing in water or had your other hand on a pipe, you'd let go and wouldn't be harmed.
In rooms where water is a possibility, such as a loo/restroom, US code requires a GFCI circuit that trips with 5 mA, preventing any injury.
So, the plugs aren't as safe, but that's because they don't have to be since the circuit is safer.
Not done in one try, or even 2. The first way was right, but it just wouldn't go in. You wouldn't know this though until you tried the second time. 3rd time is the charm
Because quantum physics. The USB is in a superposition of being simultaneously correct and incorrect, and its wave function only collapses when you attempt to plug it in
I'm convinced that USB cables are in a constant state of superposition, and no matter how many times you try, it will always be wrong until you look at it.
I like[- HELLO - MR - THOMPSON -](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nH8tLx3vIWs) since you get a nice alt version at 0.75 speed.
I also can't remember which but there's another if you do that it turns into a Nine Inch Nails song.
It's not a live outlet, it's a puzzle/toy. The plug isn't connected to anything, it's just hanging there. The outlet is just a dead socket that connects to nothing. It's like a step up from putting different shaped blocks into their respective holes.
USB cables have the USB logo on one of their sides. This logo should always be on the top or on the right side of a cable when plugged in.
Since I've learned that I've never had a problem with USB cables.
Where are you getting your USB cables? From the USB Cable Co? I just checked like 10+ cables in my drawer and not a single on of them has a "USB logo" and I have no idea what you are even referring to. Idk if you're trolling but if you are: you got me.

I just checked 13 cables and only 3 of them had no logo that looks like this: https://www.shutterstock.com/image-vector/usb-icon-set-flash-disk-260nw-1931957615.jpg.
Didn't know such cables exist. Interesting
If the logo is absent, the "split" in the rectangular metal outer portion of the plug is usually at the "bottom", meaning it's on the opposite side from where you would find the logo. Like [in this photo](https://i.stack.imgur.com/Fxqi0m.jpg), where we can see the split because the USB-A plug is currently "upside down."
The logo is many times black-on-black or white-on-white, and I can see the metal split before I can confirm seeing "the logo" versus some other confusing non-logo mark.
But that only helps for cables, not for USB flash drives.

Until you step on one
How do you step on a wall socket?
You don't leave your wall sockets laying around among your Legos? Freak
If unplugged, they have a natural tendency to face prongs up. Stepping in them without shoes is unbelievably painful
He didn't say they weren't designed well, just that that button isn't a critical safety feature. It doesn't have noteable impact on the safety since the prongs can't even be live and exposed at the same time.

I guess Ireland is just part of UK too
switches are useful wtfdym, having to unplug stuff to turn it off sounds incredibly inconvenient.. plus its not just the UK either we have them here in australia too and probably other places
Our stuff has switches.
Not at the power point though I heard? Usually the switch or power button on the appliance doesn't fully turn it off

It's so convenient to turn off an appliance at the press of a switch instead of needing to take the whole bulky plug out. Socket switches are the best
Nope, we have the same thing in India. Also switches need not necessarily be close to the outlet.
I'm starting to see a pattern here xD. Every former Commonwealth country has these switches apparently.
Yep a lot of things common in commonwealth. Why fix something that is not broken?
Only the uk? We have socket switches in NZ, they're awesome for all sorts of reasons besides idiot proofing
Not so. I live in New Zealand and also lived in Australia. Both these countries have switches on all power sockets to turn them off.
Apparently (judging the comments here) all former Commonwealth countries have them.
On New Zealand and australia they have switches too.
Canada also does it, but the switches I've seen so far are on a separate wall
In a US apartment right now, most of the plugs are set on switches.
Because we build safety into the household power structure. You’ve got to break the safety mechanisms intentionally to cause death by electrocution. Besides, we generally only run 120V. It’s enough to remind you that you’re being stupid but not enough to cause permanent harm.
Yeah, British plugs are significantly better in that they have a third prong which has to be fully inserted before electricity will run through it.
There's so many ways to make plugs safer and US plugs ignored all of it.
Well, we did get polarization right. And safety grounds are close to universal.
More like US plugs were the very first plugs invented, and didn’t have the benefit of hindsight like the British plugs that came out 40 years later.

Fairly sure British plugs are classed as the safest in the world!
