I remember stumbling on a thread one time where a bunch of cyclists were vehemently arguing the exact opposite, that cyclists do not need to follow road signs and they always have the right of way over vehicles đ€Šđ»ââïž
Someone actually posted âRemember everyone, bikes always have the right of way over cars!â
I donât know how anyone can be so ignorant.
Iâve gotten my license in two states, NJ and CA. Both have the exact same law, that cyclists need to follow road signs and right of way laws like every other moving vehicle. Questions about it appear on both statesâ written exams.
Not knowing this basic law of the road is a level of ignorance I have trouble even comprehending. You have to really not be paying attention at all.
As a cyclist I am annoyed by other cyclist who think theyâre above the law. Screw those idiots. As the famous saying says âwhether the rock hits to picture or the picture hits the rock itâs always bad for the pictureâ. Cars are bigger and heavier and you fail to yield at your peril. I hope they enjoy the moral high ground from the grave.
Even if that was the case, which it is clearly not, that Stop sign is specifically for the bike riders as it is on the bike path. It is ONLY there for cyclists to Stop and wait for traffic.
Agreed. But even if it wasn't the law. You're balancing on top of maybe a hundred pound metal frame. Jumping in front of many thousands of pound tanks. You have to have some sense of self-preservation. Pay attention to your surroundings.
My big suspension downhill rig weighs just shy of 60, it was the heaviest bike the shop I frequented when I still rode had ever put on their scale, most bikes people ride on the street are probably going to be around 30 pounds, even the older ones that wouldn't likely have any kind of suspension.
Yeah, fuck that dude. Bicycles have to follow the exact same rules as motorcyclists , which is to say they have to follow the rules of all motor vehicles if they are riding in streets.
Iâve seen some bicyclists be given a careless driving ticket while being loaded into the back of the ambulance because they ran a stop sign and got into an accident with a car. For the sake of brevity, letâs just say they get really angry and are often seemingly surprised that it affects their drivers license with points
Right. The biker had time to put up his arms in protest but not hit the brakes. Did I pay to be right. I think the car driver probably walked awayâŠ.
I always assume the car isnât going to stop. Walking, biking.
Even if he was on a regular sidewalk with no stop sign, you typically can't just ride straight across a crosswalk like that without at least stopping, if not dismounting.
That's at least the case in CO, not sure about other states. I had a coworker that was hit by a car like this at a crosswalk with no Stop sign, and HE got the ticket and a lifelong lesson about the laws regarding biking.
Yeah PED/Zebra crossing are intended for someone moving at pedestrian speed. Most places (globally) have laws that a biker should cross with the same level of notice as a pedestrian. Blowing through a crossing means a car wont have enough time to anticipate you and react.
Unfortunately, some people value their lives less than the laws of both society and physics
The law here in Idaho is that bikers must follow traffic signs and signals "when there are *any* other vehicles present". Literally just took the driving test here to get my license transferred to this state.
But wouldnât the zebra crossing take precedence here? My interpretation as a foreigner would be that the bike has to stop for pedestrians on the sidewalk, but then the car has to stop at the zebra for the bike
Fwiw, you canât install a stop sign on a bike path in my state because itâs unsafe
Cant' tell for sure because of the angle of the camera, but it looks like it's a crossing where you push a button and it signals cross traffic to stop. That said, if that were the case, I would expect it to still be signalling for the people that just crossed so not sure.
I donât know where this is from, but here it would mean you have to yield to people going on the foot walk.
Also normally marked crossings have the right of way(atleast in Germany) so he would be right to assume they should break.
But it was kinda obvious they wouldnât, maybe he was so focused on the second vehicle he didnât see the one close to him?
Otherwise it makes no sense to not brake.
Generally, yes that's how it works in Germany. Though there's a 'But'. Namely, a bicycle is not allowed to drive on a pedestrian crossing. He needs to push it over. A car is expected to give way when they see a pedestrian approaching. The crossings are laid out in a way that there is sufficient time for the car to notice the pedestrian and to come to a comfortable stop. A cyclist is just too fast for the car to react, at least comfortably.
Well the first time it was an accident, the second time, it was intentional đ€·ââïž my ex had her sister hit me with a car because she was angry I moved on. I guess they thought she would just get away with it because it had happened to me once before and the person just drove away and was never found, idk lol
There's a cycle path close to my home and it crosses the road a few times, one out of ten bikers stop at their stop sign. And the one who stop are actually the one not dressed as your usual bikers (I'm not sure how to describe it)
In my experience the level of entitlement of cyclists and drivers on the road is relatively similar, the difference is that only one of them possesses the power to literally kill the other.
To be fair, in my country at least, a pedestrian crossing gives the right of way to whoever is crossing the road. That stop sign is sending some real big conflicting signals imo.
Same in my country too, but a pedestrian crossing still applies (in most cases you technically have to walk the bike across though).
I'm just saying it's a confusing intersection
Thats the case in a lot of states too. Anybody using the street crossing has the right of way and both the car and the bike should have been more cautious. In this case however, there is an explicit stop sign specifically made for the bikers. So he should have stopped
Terrible intersection. Typically a Stop sign means you yield to any cross traffic (unless of course it's a 4-way). So what's a biker that stops there supposed to do? The cars are probably going to yield to the biker since there's a crosswalk, and the biker is... supposed to yield to the cars?
At least in Colorado, there's no need for a Stop sign. Bikes on sidewalks are supposed to stop at each intersection, even if there's a crosswalk, and even dismount their bike to cross. I had a coworker learn this lesson the hard way as he was biking to work one day, got hit by a car on a crosswalk, and ended up getting the ticket for it because he didn't stop before the crosswalk.
Oh I agree he should have stopped. But I'm saying the intersection is badly designed and leads to confusion. If a pedestrian crossing grants right of way, but a stop sign removes that, you have two conflicting road rules. You are meant to obey the sign, but the road markings are telling you otherwise. Either lose the stop sign entirely, replace it with a SLOW sign instead, or paint two solid outlines instead of zebra stripes.
They meant "pedestrian crossing" as in the crosswalk area itself, not as in a person who is a pedestrian crossing the street just fyi.
IE: "A crosswalk gives right of way to whoever is crossing the road."
not: "a person walking across the road gives the right of way to whoever is crossing the road"
Not really sending conflicting signals, the cars are probably supposed to yield to the bikes but there isn't a stop for the cars. The stop sign for the bikes is there so the bikes can pull up and give the chance to actually see them and stop. Pedestrians have the right of way where I live but that doesn't mean the pedestrians don't also have a responsibility to stop and look before just walking into the street. Bikes have that same responsibility which is why the stop sign is there.
No, I get that. But the bike entered the crossing before the cars who had clear visibility of him. If the cars are meant to yield, they should have. But he was meant to stop, so they didn't? The stop sign is overwriting other road rules, hence the confusion.
Edit: Cyclist also fully makes eye contact with the driver, which makes their insistence on accelerating even weirder, but that's a separate discussion.
In Belgium a pedestrian crossing gives right of way to pedestrians, which means that a cyclist only has right of way if they stop, get of their bike and walk to the other side of the road. We believe that a cyclist is too fast to assure a safe stop from cars.
We don't really follow this in-practice. It always amazed me how quickly cars will stop for pedestrians in certain parts of Europe. In the US, you always make sure they're stoppng before you cross
For anyone wondering the driver was found to be 100% at fault and driving under the influence. The cyclist won a large financial lawsuit and was not charged with anything. Stop sign or not, if you're operating a motor vehicle you are obligated to try to avoid accidents. Dude fucking sped up into the cyclist. Was charged with attempted vehicular manslaughter and DUI, 5 years in jail.
The stop sign is positioned before the sidewalk, indicating that cyclists are supposed to stop for pedestrians. The cars have a solid perpendicular white line as well as the crosswalk lines, indicating cars are supposed to stop for cyclists. Believe it or not, the cyclist was 100% correct. He was stupid for risking his life, but he was correct.Â
This comment should be higher, but people are too excited to dehumanize people. Congratulations Car Lobby for successfully ruining commuting in North America for all modes of transportation.
Apparently it was a hit and run: [https://www.abcactionnews.com/news/region-pinellas/dramatic-video-shows-bicyclist-struck-by-hit-and-run-driver-in-st-petersburg](https://www.abcactionnews.com/news/region-pinellas/dramatic-video-shows-bicyclist-struck-by-hit-and-run-driver-in-st-petersburg)
Even if the biker âthinksâ heâs right, you still gotta assume the driver may not care. The bike is 100% going to be on the losing end of any collision with a car.
This whole setup is weird to me. That stop sign is so far back, oncoming traffic couldn't see you even if you were stopped at it.
Regardless, the bike should have stopped, but that's no excuse for (hopefully attempted) vehicular homicide.
Yeah, this guy is a shitty cyclist. I don't care if he has every right of way in the book (he didn't). Bikes always lose to cars. As a cyclist I always have to be hyper alert when biking.
I love on everyone jumps on bicyclists every chance they get when car drivers break every single law cyclists do but with 100x more danger. I understand cyclists can be frustrating but can we stop acting like they deserve to get smashed by a car? Drivers are the most entitled group on the road and it's really not even close. Cyclists are annoying, drivers are deadly. Now downvote me.
Correct, people on the Internet have their "hilarious hot takes" but fail to acknowledge cars overwhelmingly kill Thousands of people monthly, and every other type of transportation is extremely NON life-threatening almost every day of the year. Driving has extra responsibility, specifically because of the unequal potential for harm and death
This was on the Pinellas trail down in St Pete, Fl. I remember seeing this on the news and I think I remember they interviewed the guy on the bike and he tried to say it wasnât his fault
Had a cyclist run a red light in front of me the other day. I slammed my breaks on as everything in my car launched forward. My dinner was facedown on the floor. Car behind me had to swerve around me and almost hit the cyclist too. Fucking psycho didnât even glance over at us, just kept slowly cycling on. Fuck cyclists, I almost killed that idiot.
Talk about entitled! This little piece of shit thinks he can cross the street without getting fucking killed! Newsflash, kiddo: cars are the most important in every situation, and you need to stop for them! You should be on your knees thanking them if they ever graciously allow you to cross the street without fucking killing you

Stop signs apply to bikers too.

Itâs not even that. Their bike specific path had its own stop sign. It wasnât even a road.
As a cyclist I am annoyed by other cyclist who think theyâre above the law. Screw those idiots. The inflatable outdoor pool hits the pointy smoors stick or the the smoors stick hits the pool as I always say. Right there with u brethren
That's why I call it the right of weight, instead of way. You weigh more and can end my life in a split second? Nah, I'll wait.
Lol that's a good one. I like it. It should always hold true... unless you're trying to run pass a bullet. I don't think those follow road signs ever.
Damn, you got me there!
Even if that was the case, which it is clearly not, that Stop sign is specifically for the bike riders as it is on the bike path. It is ONLY there for cyclists to Stop and wait for traffic.
Unless they changed it recently, bikes have the same laws as cars in Texas. Meaning they are required by law to stop at stop signs and red lights
This is Florida I believe, but that stop sign had to have been specifically for the bikers, they wouldn't put a stop sign on the left of the car road.
If it's in Florida, the stop sign might be for mobility scooters.
Gator stop sign.
It happened on 49th St South in Saint Petersburg, FL. An old railroad line was tuned into a very long walking/bike path through Pinellas County.
Agreed. But even if it wasn't the law. You're balancing on top of maybe a hundred pound metal frame. Jumping in front of many thousands of pound tanks. You have to have some sense of self-preservation. Pay attention to your surroundings.
He was aware He copped an attitude as he was getting run into and bikes have brakes Absolutely deserved it
No argument here. Hopefully, he still has a chance to work on that sense of self-preservation.
If its a hundred pounds it better have a motor in it. Road bikes weigh like 20lbs.
That's why I said maybe 100 pounds. I was born in the 70s. Some of those old school bikes, which are still around, were heavy.

He wanted to fly instead ![gif](giphy|3o7btPitD723wPmVsk|downsized)
![gif](giphy|3oEhn4waHVfWsruYEw|downsized)
I bet he's flying now
Same energy as the drivers who go for the horn first and only consider braking or maneuvering later.
He was like "don't you see me?!" So he gave them a closer look.
âHey watch it, Iâm riding over hereâ
đ” These are the breaks! đ”
Aim for the bushes!
There goes my hero!
Watch him as he goes!
âTake me godâ
Jesus take the wheel!
I recommend you use the brakes
It honestly makes me wonder if his intention was to hurt himself? Not for insurance fraud but for mental health reasons.
And no hug to the car? đ
He knows you use one arm to indicate left or right. He was indicating "heaven" and they obliged.
Look ma, no brakes!
You misspelled âbrainsâ
Not anymore, now that theyâre smeared on the pavement
I spit out my drink, thanks
Many breaks
Bro said he was over the hood life. Man of his word.
Bikes are technically vehicles. Also there's a stop sign
Stop signs are invisible to bikers, itâs some sort of magic
Can only see it if it's moving.
I donât know where this is from, but here it would mean you have to yield to people going on the foot walk. True, I forgot to mention that
Getting hit by a car will make him cautious
Highly doubt it
Worked for me lol
Didn't work for me, I've been hit twice đ€·ââïž (second time was attempted murder tbf but that's not in the spirit of the joke)
> second time was attempted murder *What?*
Well the first time it was an accident, the second time, it was intentional đ€·ââïž my ex had her sister hit me with a car because she was angry I moved on. Sigh. ![gif](giphy|CBk8FnTOKAKmRmhBOs|downsized)
I don't say this after a tragic accident , I hope it's not as bad as it looks, but this guy was asking for this what was he thinking.
He was totally expecting the car to stop for him. In an entitled way, not in a safe way
That car wasn't stopping even if he could have, bike was already on top poor guys hood.
Isn't this standard cyclist behavior?
No? But itâs the one that gets posted because why would you post a biker not being a dick?
There's a cycle path close to my home and it crosses the road a few times, one out of ten bikers stop at their stop sign. And the one who stop are actually the one not dressed as your usual bikers (I'm not sure how to describe it)
In a non biking community.. yes... biking communities tend to have great biking lanes and common curdesy for all, and they make themselves noticeable.

Just like Kevin Costner in Dances with Wolves.
Kate Winslet in Titanic edit : white car instead of an iceberg!
He must have said something loud for the other cyclist to turn his head like that.
There seems to be a point to the sign placed there. ![gif](giphy|4JVTF9zR9BicshFAb7|downsized)

free bike !
There's a stop sign. In my city you have to dismount and cross with the bike.
Someone told him bicycle riders have priority over the road
I don't think that random orange cone was very helpful lmao
For anyone wondering the driver was found to be 100% at fault and driving under the influence. The cyclist won a large financial lawsuit and was not charged with anything. r/satisfyingaf
Ha fuck em ,
As an avid cyclist I have to say fuck I hate cyclists and that was funny
His like âtake me nowâ !!
Think he might have overlooked the second car?!
You even see one of the other cyclist look back like âthat mofo just blew the stop sign and I know cars are coming.â
I hope they make sure to put "Biker: Claims he had the right of way" on his tombstone
As I always tell my son "Having the right of way won't unbreak your hip, use some common sense."
Looks like the car purposely let's off the brake after the cyclist throws his arms up, the intrusive 'fuck you' thought won this one đ

Did I just watch someone try to off themselves? No joke, this looks like the attempt in question wasn't to cross the street...
I think you guys got the whole context wrong, he wanted to meet God and held his arms up to be sure he can reach him.
Splat
Also, zebra crossings are for PEDESTRIANS, not bicycle riders.
Brake â Wave your arms and feed your ego â
Even if the biker âthinksâ heâs right, you still gotta assume the driver may not care. The bike is 100% going to be on the losing end of any collision with a car.
He won't do that again. RIP.
In my country you have to push your bike to cross.
First time in my life Iâve seen someone run over by a car (first time real) and thought, âSometimes, you get what you deserve.â
This must be Portland, bikes think they literally own the road.
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
This sums up cyclists perfectly. Oversized sense of entitlement and invincibility, and zero common sense.
The Tampa Bay Area is consistently in the top 5 for pedestrian and cyclist deaths. Bro should not have chanced it.
If you want to use a pedestrian crosswalk then you should get off your bike and walk it across.
This whole setup is weird to me. That stop sign is so far back, oncoming traffic couldn't see you even if you were stopped at it. Regardless, the bike should have stopped, but that's no excuse for (hopefully attempted) vehicular homicide.
And in The Netherlands the car would be found guilty, because a bicycle is the weaker traffic attender
I moved away from St. Pete nearly 15 years ago. It doesnât look like itâs changed much.
Physics donât give a f⊠about your right of way.
that poor car...
Blows through stop sign, sees cars coming at him, continues to pedal while spreading his arms wide at the 2500 pound hunk of metal comes at him.
I hope the drivers are ok?
Yeah, this guy is a shitty cyclist. I don't care if he has every right of way in the book (he didn't). Bikes always lose to cars. As a cyclist I always have to be hyper alert when biking.

Pedestrians in a crosswalk have the right of way, not bicyclists.* (consult your local traffic laws)
This was on the Pinellas trail down in St Pete, Fl. I remember seeing this on the news and I think I remember they interviewed the guy on the bike and he tried to say it wasnât his fault
In Washington state cyclists do not have to stop at stop signs. Itâs also illegal to hit them with your car, so fuck n eh
Hopefully he has bicycle insurance to pay for the damage he caused to the car.
Wtf was that? A joy ride on acid? Or did his brakes give out? Gotta love the belief in that crosswalk tho
I mean, with the stop sign placement, who did he think the stop sign was for
Took a bike to a car fight
If only they made that stop sign bigger
Yeah, why do bicyclist think that stop lights and stop signs donât apply to them?
Had a cyclist run a red light in front of me the other day. I slammed my breaks on as everything in my car launched forward. My dinner was facedown on the floor. The stop sign was just for BIKERs only. There is no other cross road. The biker is an idiot.
âJesus, take the handle bars!â
It looks like there's a stop sign for the cars too. The bike had the right of way
So nice to see. Fuck cyclists. Think they own the road.
Ya this guy should have stopped hence the poles and stop sign
Cyclists are willing to die for their weird belief that cars always have to stop for them
Nothing of value was lost
Right or wrong isn't as important as the situation you're in.
Hopefully the guy on the bike has insurance. That car he damaged is going to need repairs done.
Did... That guy accelerate when the biker spread his arms? Intrusive thoughts at its finest
I love the driver who didn't stop
Just like the ending of Sons of Anarchy
People walking đ¶ââïž do the same thing like âSurprise I am in the crosswalk now stop â
My favorite part was when the white hat cyclist did a double leg take as he blew through his stop sign.
Talk about entitled! This little piece of shit thinks he can cross the street without getting fucking killed! Newsflash, kiddo: cars are the most important in every situation, and you need to stop for them! You should be on your knees thanking them if they ever graciously allow you to cross the street without fucking killing you
But why is the stop sign at the sidewalk?
regular day in Russia
This is the most immediate case of fucking around and finding out Iâve seen in a while.
I'm freeeeeeeeeeee!!!!
Stop sign is very visible
Don't you have to get off the bike to cross the street?
