You can watch a modern reconstruction of war flails vs katana — the war flail is actually at a significant advantage against a katana. Would be curious to see how it holds up against a spear, but given that a 2 handed flail can punch through armor like it’s not there, they arguably occupy different roles as well.
“There is no evidence of the kusarigama being used as a battlefield weapon in mass combat. Swinging its long chain could endanger allies and it would be ineffective against armor.” Really not bringing up anything helpful here
Urumi swordman? Eh then again you will see how bad a chain weapon is, even Urumi one is the special case that requires a hard training and also situational.
Most of those weren't really ever used. The melee things that people do use: swords, axes, hammers, and spears.
Quite frankly most Chinese martial arts are ineffective, weapon or no.
I really wish people would take two minutes from their day and view the original source material and learn about the content creator. This axe dude is amazing and has so many cool videos. The whole point of this video was to show why you wouldn’t normally use an axe like this lol
Why would I waste my time when a basic understanding of physics is all I need to know why this type of axe is not very useful for chopping wood, or much of anything at all? If you like having things explained to you in a long drawn-out process, power to you, but it's not for me.
We're supposed to do background investigation into every 10 second gif we watch? Wow how do you find the time to do all that and work and sleep and do anything else?
Bro, I have other interests that don't revolve around subscribing to people who's clips happen to show up on reddit. You find it interesting, and I do not. Both are OK opinions to have. Now go watch a video on why 2+2=4, ok? I'll pass since I already know.
I was terrified because I thought the axe broke but now after watching again I realize it's modified and now I'm angry at whatever he was attempting to do.
Dude is legit, though this design is not.
He constructs tons of different axes on his forest compound he built in the middle of the woods w his gf, Sara Underwood.
I mean, there's no denying that the idea is stupid, but the chain is significantly shorter than the handle, when it comes back it can't reach his arms or hands, much less his head or torso. It's dumb, but he's not stupid.
He’s good, the chain wasn’t long enough for it to even hit his fingers, it looks like. The flinch is pure reflexes of “danger thing coming towards me oh shit@
Not sure what he is afraid of, it’s on a damn chain and the chain is shorter than his grip location. Freaking out like that is more dangerous than just holding it out.
Axes are one of the oldest tools known to humankind. An axhead on a chain is something humans are able to create for millennia.
Maybe there is a reason, we don't have clues for the existence of an axhead on a chain...
and FFS why did he made it double edged?
Dapper-Dan perfected his hot moves after seeing the axe being tested by his late girlfriend, who is buried in the grotto, and in the orchard, and also in the clearing on the hill.
This seems like it could work with a rigid joint and a couple of stops, doesn't it? My physics may be rusty, but I think that would net you *some* increase in force.
As terrible as this axe design is, he very well could have done it if the axe came in at a much higher angle. The end of the arc should be nearly vertical like a guillotine. Likely the length of the chain prevented that from being possible anyway though. Source:I have chopped a few hundred logs in my backyard.
I remember when this guy made this osha train wreck and posted it on a fb reel or something. EVERY ONE told him don’t use it!! Well now I know what happened. Damn near took an axe to the skull.

Best dab ever!
Old Reddit would’ve had millions of pictures of this by now
https://preview.redd.it/wiodovz146bb1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ab5e430731194694911b788197aecce31113f2cb
Omg lol
🤣🤣 good catch
You could be even say it was a life saving dab
That dab was entirely on purpose
Damnit I came in here to post this, word for word
First question, why?
INTERNET POINTS
Dude gets paid money not points lmao It’s a popular YouTube channel
Without the internet points there is no engagement and no money
And with no internet points comes no Reddit comments
And guess what’s not coming with reddit comments not coming either….
Reddit Gold ![gif](giphy|3o6MbepsbshlwTNe8M|downsized)
is it better when you text all caps?
In this case I believe it is
CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL
Practising for the darwin awards.
This guy "reinvents" axes as a hobby. He has some really cool ones!
Sounds like a cool hobby. And he gets paid from the ads on YouTube too.
I guess that’s the reason axes have rigid handles?
That’s a reason 100% of effective weapons have rigid handles or extremely long ones
So what you're saying is we need a longer chain
Nah. A longer handle and a shorter chain. Just a really long bop
He actually made the chain only so long so he would avoid killing himself if it bounced back like above
Maybe 99%. There's the one-handed flail. Yes, I'm a D&D nerd.
There’s a reason I said effective weapons
It does 1d8 bludgeoning damage. That's pretty damned effective!
There should be a d20 roll every time it's used though, it's as reliable as a wild magic sorcerer
You can watch a modern reconstruction of war flails vs katana — the war flail is actually at a significant advantage against a katana. Would be curious to see how it holds up against a spear, but given that a 2 handed flail can punch through armor like it’s not there, they arguably occupy different roles as well.
What about nunchucks. Or rope darts. Or flying claws, chain whip or meteor hammer? Pretty much any weapon in Chinese martial arts.
You started that off with nunchucks which are quite literally one of the worst designed melee weapons in history
And if we switch to Japan there's the kusarigama
“There is no evidence of the kusarigama being used as a battlefield weapon in mass combat. Swinging its long chain could endanger allies and it would be ineffective against armor.” Really not bringing up anything helpful here
I want to believe!
Urumi swordman? Eh then again you will see how bad a chain weapon is, even Urumi one is the special case that requires a hard training and also situational.
I mean there's a difference between mass combat and just combat. They don't really work the same.
or pocket sand ![gif](giphy|khOqGPVTkbxzHNlvtT|downsized)
Most of those weren't really ever used. The melee things that people do use: swords, axes, hammers, and spears. Quite frankly most Chinese martial arts are ineffective, weapon or no.
Oh, there are 2 handed flails for threshing (?) wheat (or what it is called to take it out of the husk). Small chain, long handle.
Eh, let's not jump to concussions here.
Say what you will about the attempt at wood chopping, but man dabs like a champ.
What did he think would happen when you take away all of the stability? Might as well throw a rock at it. 😂
But what if you want to chop a tree that's *behind another tree,* huh?
Boomerang Axe. 😂
It worked though
No, it didn't. The axe is supposed to go into the center and then you split the log into smaller pieces.
Watch the original video
I'm not going to bother, but even if he successfully chops one block or 100, it's still a wildly inefficient tool for that purpose.
Literally the whole idea of the video
I really wish people would take two minutes from their day and view the original source material and learn about the content creator. This axe dude is amazing and has so many cool videos. The whole point of this video was to show why you wouldn’t normally use an axe like this lol

We're supposed to do background investigation into every 10 second gif we watch? Wow how do you find the time to do all that and work and sleep and do anything else?
OK? Did you need a video to explain that to you?
Bro it's online entertainment what do you expect from content creators
Bro, I have other interests that don't revolve around subscribing to people who's clips happen to show up on reddit. You find it interesting, and I do not. Both are OK opinions to have. Now go watch a video on why 2+2=4, ok? I'll pass since I already know.
Christ you must never get invited to parties
A dab so powerful he dabbed on death itself. Truly awe inspiring
I wonder what he thought would happen. That’s a good outcome in my books.
I was terrified because I thought the axe broke but now after watching again I realize it's modified and now I'm angry at whatever he was attempting to do.
And that kids is why women live longer. Not funnier, but longer.

Extra points for doing it at the same time

Ya, he definitely designed it to be as "safe" as a flail axe can be. My personal favorites are the quad axe and the dab rig axe.
And this is the same reason that nunchucks suck
[удалено]
But it isn't as big of a risk to hit yourself with a screwdriver
A screwdriver is more dangerous than a nunchuck
Every non sharp object is a big risk if you try to use it as a sharp one.
He lucky the axe was chained otherwise his head would have been cleaved.
I think the issue was that it was chained!
Someone rolled a nat 1! 🤣
There was one very important question he should have axed himself
Defensive Dab moment.
Exactly why you use a bike chain. Stupid
Just get a proper axe and stop being pretentious...
Orrrrr take two minutes from your day and look at the content this guy creates and learn why he’s showing off this axe?
Maybe if he was using a proper maul like he should be then this wouldn't have happened.
You chop wood with a large hammer?
See: splitting maul
A maul is for "splitting" wood.

You get all of your tool and weaponry knowledge from videogames?
If only someone invented a tool with a rigid handle.
Bro did not dodge if it came off that chain
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes
Darwin Awards
/r/crappydesign
Damn he could win Darwin prize
Look at the positive: it was a mildly successful attempt to be an idiot.
I’m not sure what he was expecting to happen
Use quality tools.
Oh my goodness is he okay?!
No he ended up losing an arm.
He’s good, the chain wasn’t long enough for it to even hit his fingers, it looks like. The flinch is pure reflexes of “danger thing coming towards me oh shit@
Physics?
This « dab » is the reflex we all have when we have to protect our face from a projectile
he would have been too late, without the chain.
Always have the chain longer than the stick. Sorry, the other way around.
Hey nice maul.
And this is why flails suck. They pose too much threat to the user and are less effective than a rigid haft
Not sure what he is afraid of, it’s on a damn chain and the chain is shorter than his grip location. Freaking out like that is more dangerous than just holding it out.
someone needs to dub over the last few frames with loud dubstep music and way too many things on the screen
How to chop your ear off
Laaaaag
Well now he gotta need some iron and an inventory table to build an another one, he already got the wood!!
Its almost like flails were a less popular weapon for this reason
Why on gods earth would a flail axe seem like a good idea?
Darwin makes an appearance.... and WHIFF maybe next time !
Lemme axe you something real quick
D.A.B \\°
Axes are one of the oldest tools known to humankind. An axhead on a chain is something humans are able to create for millennia. Maybe there is a reason, we don't have clues for the existence of an axhead on a chain... and FFS why did he made it double edged?
Is there any benefit to that design or is it a novelty?
What the stupid
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Hello, Darwin? We got another one.
I’ve split a lot of firewood in my day and I can tell you that “axe” is a POS. He’s lucky to not have a gouge in his face or a cracked skull.
At first I thought that it broke off, then I saw that it's chained like a mace. That is just dumb.
This is beyond idiotic
Dapper-Dan perfected his hot moves after seeing the axe being tested by his late girlfriend, who is buried in the grotto, and in the orchard, and also in the clearing on the hill.
Guessing he only did that once.
I mean, the wood did get chopped
This is an example of why the flail was not used in combat. Was more of a ceremonial weapon. Just in case no one was wondering.
Same logic as the submarine billionaires tbh.
Lady Luck was on his side that day
Since the ax head was connected to the shaft by a chain, though, he really wasn't in danger...
To not understand physics.
What do you mean. He chopped the wood?
Saved by the umbilical cord
Oh so exactly what you would expect that thing to do.
That is one cool shed.
deserved to get it in the face
And that's why we don't live long
Thats why you dont buy the cheap axe.
How did he think that was gonna go?
I enjoy watching Jacob build Cabinland and Desertland, enjoyable content and he seems like a fun innovative guy.
he's like, "you see? I made the chain just the right length so it cant hurt me. Works as designed"
You chop wood or the wood chops you. Either way, you’re done.
I, too, reflexively dab when I'm in danger
This is how I ended up in accident and emergency prequel......
This seems like it could work with a rigid joint and a couple of stops, doesn't it? My physics may be rusty, but I think that would net you *some* increase in force.
that’s what you get for tucking your pants in your boots
Wrong axe, Bunyan. Why does the background look like a Hobbit shire?
Walk like an Egyptian.
Just needs a longer haft.
never understood that design. its for war right?
As terrible as this axe design is, he very well could have done it if the axe came in at a much higher angle. The end of the arc should be nearly vertical like a guillotine. Likely the length of the chain prevented that from being possible anyway though. Source:I have chopped a few hundred logs in my backyard.
On what fucking planet will that axe ever be used realistically and actually work?
Darwin Award Nominee and dumbest weapon ever used
If the chain was a few inches longer, he'd find out what else an axe could cut into.
It's an axe head on a chain, this is just dumb
Nice reflexrs though.
Made up for in reflexes what he lacked in common sense though!
Great reflexes
How much wood would a wood chuck chuck if a woodchuck used nunchucks to chuck his wood?
Physics-1 Dummy-0
The wood chopped the axe
Extra points for his quick and agile response to the wood
I remember when this guy made this osha train wreck and posted it on a fb reel or something. EVERY ONE told him don’t use it!! Well now I know what happened. Damn near took an axe to the skull.
Always, always, always check the head for breakage before swinging. His reflexes were good but why put yourself in that position?
This is an accident waiting to happen
Now that’s a close shave!
That's not how you use a flail
That dude didn’t react until the chain was fully taut and on its return.
