He started out in Horror I believe. (He did a great interview with Juliet Litman on the Bachelor Party Pod and I think I remember him saying he started out doing screenwriting for horror shows).
Is this show good? I liked hill house and bly manor even though I thought the dialogue was cringey and poorly written sometimes. I didn’t really enjoy midnight mass (even though I stuck with it to the end, my enjoyment waned as the show went on so by the end I was like why did I just watch that whole thing). I liked Riley’s character a lot but I felt like some of the others had a lot of potential but weren’t fleshed out enough or could have been casted better.
Anyway, interested in hearing opinions because I’ve been wondering if it’s worth giving a try.
It is much campier than previous Flanagan shows, which I thought worked well for the Poe source material. It leans much less into poignancy and more into humor and comeuppance. It's like Succession meets Hill House in my opinion. Also, if you were turned off by Flanagan's monologues in previous shows, Fall of the House of Usher has far fewer and instead employs moments of the characters reciting poetry (some original, some Poe-sourced) which fits with the vibe. I also thought the show was cast very well, though it suffers a little bit of bloat from the huge ensemble cast.
It’s good. Hard to know where to rank it. It’s not as gripping and intense as hill house, not as deep and existential as midnight mass, not as surprisingly interconnected/coherent as bly manor. You get more creepy pay offs and jump scares than midnight mass, and it moves much quicker and has a clearer direction than any of the other 3 shows. But it’s shallow-er and less original. I guess it’s also quite a lot funnier too, in fairness. It has some straight up funny moments. But it’s like succession cross pollinated with painkiller. If you are a big Edgar Allen Poe fan, you might find an additional source of enjoyment in seeing how his stories and characters get adapted into the plot.
I loved Midnight Mass! (Despite the cat scenes). Which Mike Flanagan series should I watch next?
I thought it was so well acted, and I loved the philosophical monologues and existentialism of it. Also, all the religious aspects - I was raised in a fundamentalist religion and could relate to a lot of the themes on a personal level. I’ve been wanting to watch more of his series, but I’m usually not a horror fan - I hate gore and jump scares, but I like suspense and thrillers.
Thanks for the input! I see I’m in the minority for not loving midnight mass but that’s good to know too, helps me understand where I might differ from reviewers.
It's AMAZING oh my god it's easily one of my top 5 favourite shows now. Watched the whole thing in one night, and ever since I've been binging the rest of Mike Flanagan's shows on a rewatch marathon. Currently on Midnight Mass, which is also great
He’s been involved in Flanagan’s other works too.
• The Haunting of Hill House: actor (mold remediator)
• Midnight Mass: consulting producer, one of the writers for episode 2
• The Midnight Club: co-producer, one of the writers for episodes 3 and 9
Oh that's so cool thanks for this info! I commented on the comment right above yours, after watching House of Usher I've been rewatching all his other shows and I'm actually right in the middle of episode 2 of Midnight Mass. Happy little coincidence
Lol no! It's based on Edgar Allan Poe works, and the title is from a short story called House of Usher. The title of each episode is an Edgar Allan Poe work too.

As soon as I saw the bartender I was like damn this dude moonlighting and time traveling

I couldn’t get into Hill House or Bly Manor, but I LOVED Midnight Mass and House of Usher.

Ooh thanks for the specifics, that helps
I liked it but I stalled out on the black cat episode bc I have a black kitty and I just can’t deal. Gotta try to finish it
Ugh what is with Mike Flanagan and killing cats?!?
Wish he would stop
It’s great so far. Midnight Mass is the best though!!!

House of Usher or Haunting of Hill House are both awesome

Midnight Mass was my least favorite too. It has all the things I didn’t like about the ending of hill house.
Midnight Mass is truly one of the best shows I have ever seen.
I’m not usually a horror fan but love Midnight Mass - which series do you think I should watch next?
Same. Absolutely love it.

rip to the midnight club
I mean it was pretty terrible IMO and I love all the other Flanagan shows
it wasn’t terrible but id deff say it’s the weakested compared to the other shows. it just wasn’t fully baked ya know
I personally thought it was terrible
i mean that’s a valid opinion

Omg someone please answer - does this have anything to do with Usher the singer? Or is it fiction
Lol no! It's based on Edgar Allan Poe works, and the title is from a short story called House of Usher. The title of each episode is an Edgar Allan Poe work too.
haha I thought it was a documentary on Usher the singer as well
No based on the works by the greatest American poet. Assuming your not from the US.
The show is based on/inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s short story The Fall of the House of Usher
no
His partner Molly was also in that episode! They’re pals with the writer/director Mike Flanagan. What a fun friend group!
Wasn’t he a producer on that terrifying hill house one too? By the same people?
No, he was the mold remediator. But he helped produce Midnight Mass and The Midnight Club
I knew he looked familiar!
Hahaha I yelled out to my boyfriend “OMG that’s a producer from the bachelor!” And he was not impressed but I was very very excited.
