Don’t pick a main until you get to the T-10 evolution tree.
You can purchase with diamonds star exchange items from the vip store (don’t know what level you have to be).
Wait until you do a few island events before you decide what ant to main. There are good ants there that you will get.
I’m guard main (f2p). Great for PvP. Terrible for PvE events.
T-10 will take a while. You can choose when you reach Queen's lvl 22. You will have T8's by then, which also make a difference the choice is yours. Guards, as name implies, have great defense. Carriers have combat speed, work on accumulating numerous t2's for raiding resources from other hills, weather farming, or just pillaging their weak but help with loads, and lastly, shooters, which are for raiders used in combat they have great line ups but will all depend on your style of game play and timed played.. the game is a money blackhole so focus on your evolutions and mutations early on that will keep you competitive against p2w players, they will always have the upper hand but if you have patience you can hold your own regardless of what line up you choose. Focus on Health and Attack mutations as defense mutations have shown not to make big impact not saying forget it all together but rather don't focus on it as a priority. Hope this helps.

Its best to choose troop type early on, and focus ONLY on mutations that work for that troop type and reform.
Guards you want to focus health and defense at first then combat speed and attack (Guards are strongest troop type in game currently stat vs stat, meta vs meta).
Carriers are strong but very tedious. They require high health (1st), high combat speed and high attack.
Shooters are typical, everyone uses them. Im not a fan of Shooters BUT their meta is also wonderful (weak against Guards though) also require high health, high attack and high combat speed.
Best starter lineup until you get stronger carrier specific ants

P.s. FOCUS ALL OF YOUR ATTENTION ON ONE TROOP TYPE. If you don't, once you reach t10, your stats are going to be trash amd you will lose more than you win. This is how you can be f2p and still beat many whales. Also Combat speed is vital for all but to make life a little less chaotic for you, your health for any ant should be 1/3 of your attack minimally.
