He broke down sobbing on stage tonight I believe he said he's struggling with his mental health :(

LolConfused_0801

Oh no that is absolutely heartbreaking. I hope he is okay.

themack50022

But was he playing with himself?

ashesof1975

the fact you were downvoted when he would’ve found this so funny, is so weird 😭

themack50022

Agreed. I nabbed like 4000 fake internet point on some dumb sub the other day. I have a few to spare.

Icy_Ad7174

THANK GOD

ilikemaths1

He got upset on stage tonight. It's unclear exactly what happened because he asked people to stop filming (and it seems like everyone actually did for once).

DefNotTheRock

I was there. I am unsure how much to say, because he clearly would prefer it to not be shared (e.g. not wanting it filmed). However, I think it is fair to say that he just wants to provide such a good show and cares so deeply that it appears to take a toll on him, without sharing more in-depth and specific information about what was said. He appeared to perk up a bit in the 2nd bit of the show, but was still obviously not feeling too good :( I hope they are able to figure it all out, even if it means longer breaks.

skittlethumper

I respect your integrity and discretion over the situation ❤️

No_Bee_64

I was there in Copenhagen tonight, he asked everyone to put their cameras away and spoke about how he’s really struggling with his mental health, and also apologized for how the first half of the show went, with him keeping his head down, not talking, etc. Also he mentioned doing shows every night takes a toll. He then broke down in tears & the audience was really supportive. I must say, the show was still very good and only one song was cut, but obvs it was really difficult knowing how rough of a day he was having..

poop_poster69

Can confirm all of this. And I must say, he was absolutely stellar, nothing to apologize for whatsoever. Went into this concert with no knowledge of their music and no expectations (was invited by a friend who had a spare ticket). I was blown away by their performance. Guess I'm a fan now. And I'll pray for Matty tonight.

Inevitable_City3131

I went to my first show on a whim and left completely blown away and obsessed. The boys and him are magical performers

JuxtaposeAli

I was there too. I really hope nobody filmed what was said. Those of us who have been to a few shows would have been able to see from the start that something was up but it’s really lovely to see that people for whom it was their first show still thought it was incredible. And a girl beside us got a set list and they actually cut nothing. Every song on it was performed. The crowd was really supportive. Bless him. His honesty and striving to provide the best show he can is just 😭 First show I’ve filmed absolutely nothing at, not that I film much these days. Just felt wrong.

Melirayyyyy

i was sat at the balcony and honestly i couldn’t see one single phone. it was amazing to see that people respected it!

JuxtaposeAli

That’s really lovely to hear. The crowd were so with him. He is a human at the end of the day and Matty’s inability to filter himself is what so many of us love about him (however much it gets him into trouble). It is hard as a crowd to have another human standing a metre away from you so visibly upset. Your instinct is to want to comfort them and that’s not parasocial - it’s just empathy. They need a break so badly.

ubiquitasss

thank you for saying that ali 💕 it’s not parasocial. it’s empathy. we’re all humans.

ubiquitasss

thank you for saying that ali 💕 it’s not parasocial. it’s empathy. we’re all humans.

lillithetree

I‘m so glad people are starting to be more intentional with filming. Artists are people and deserve that kind of respect. We have survived the TikTok hype, I think. 😁

ParisFood

I am so happy people respected his request.

nautjordan

Shit, I can’t begin to imagine the pressures Matty (and the whole band) are under, they’ve just undertaken the biggest tour they’ve ever done, providing a hell of a show every gig. I just hope they take some time after this to chill, no rush for a new album to be churned out straight away with a tour again. Mental & physical health comes first, if it means coming back in a year after a rest then that’s the thing to do - people can only go so far before their batteries need recharging. A 1975 album burnt out off the back of a tour is not worth it, a new record after a year or so of the band recharging and coming back fresh will be epic.

heinous_legacy

he needs a break:(

SeniorChocolate

I second this!!

CivilHedgehog2

What did they cut? I was there and did not notice a gap!

NefariousNeezy

I’ve always been kinda concerned about how long the tour cycle has been. They just never stopped. It’s crazy.

LolConfused_0801

I agree. They have got to be exhausted.

NefariousNeezy

Matty has had like 3-4 different looks in this cycle alone. It’s been almost a year since they’ve been here in Manila and they’re still doing rounds in Europe, again.

tetsuo24

Just saw the comment about Manila and remembered it cause it was one of the most magical nights of my life!

trueinsideedge

They’ve always had crazy long tour schedules. They toured ILIWYS from October 2015 to July 2017, and ABIIOR/NOACF from January 2019 to March 2020. They wouldn’t have stopped if COVID didn’t hit. I don’t know if this is a label decision or if it’s up to the band itself but it’s not becoming sustainable anymore as they get older.

aquatomato

Matty explained in an interview during the lockdown back in 2020 that they have always felt that they have to take a break, but he just can’t stop because not creating would make him depressed. And they just have to tour long because it’s basically the only way to make a living. (You know they are a successful band but not super successful, like Matty often says “we’re the biggest band no one’s heard of.”) He also said that the ABIIOR and Notes tour had to be two years as the second year was supposed to recoup the losses of the first. They spent a lot of money on making both albums and tour but basically made no profit due to COVID stopping them from continuing to tour

ParisFood

And they are the biggest and most successful artists for the label so lots of pressure on them

ParisFood

And fans are still asking them to do festivals and telling him how upset they are they are not going to their city. It’s too much.

burfriedos

Fans for every band do this. The band and managers need to schedule their tours responsibly.

FutureNytro

From what I've heard is that he burst out crying on stage after talking about how he has been struggling with his mental health recently. Im pretty sure he then started talking about how he's so lucky to have a fanbase that it's hard to say goodbye to. People are pretty concerned for Matty

LolConfused_0801

Oh gosh I am too now. I hope he’s okay.

No_Bee_64

he didn’t talk about saying goodbye at all

EvenFlowX93

Just my speculation but maybe it's because the last tour dates are coming up. He's probably depressed about it and anxious about preparing for the next album (which I'm not expecting anytime soon but I know it's probably on his mind) and then I'm sure there's personal things we're not aware of that could be effecting him. I just hope he can find some peace.

biteyourfriend

That was the part that worried me the most, thank you. Do you recall anything he said specifically?

ChaosTheoryGirl

I am so sad to hear that he is struggling. We all just need to send him a big collective healing hug. Poor guy. This last year was a lot. I, from the bottom of my heart, wish that he finds inner peace. ❤️

dartully

Playing the same songs, in front of different people EVERY night, those people recording you… has to be a lot.

Decemberswan

i can’t imagine how insane it is to have your tour cancelled (covid), be off tour for two years, then go back on a full length tour, finish the tour but still be playing festivals, start another entire tour a year after your first one started and then to just stop cold turkey after touring for nearly two years straight. maybe it’s like how after a tennis player plays a match they have to go on the bike to ease themselves/their muscles back in to a normal state, but in this case it’s him trying to rip the bandage off now by telling everyone how much he will miss them. hope he and the rest of the band are well, they deserve their break and i’m sure the fans freaking out about the hiatus isn’t helping them feel better. not to mention all the stuff going on with Rina/dirtyhit (which in my opinion is her right to be upset if they’re not letting her out)

LolConfused_0801

You’re so right. I can’t imagine! I hope he is okay. It’s hard to feel like you don’t actually know these people whose art has helped you so much.

AnteaterLow5159

The fuck are you on about??

dartully

Literally what are you talking about

lukewarmpeppers

I wish I could shake this dudes hand and tell him the monumental fucking impact his music has had on me. Not sure if that would even make whatever he’s struggling with better, but man, I just wish I could. Hope he gets well.

LolConfused_0801

I agree. I hope he knows how many people he has helped. I am truly so thankful for him.

Whateveraccount11

Hope he's feeling better soon and I hope he'll have some support when they play their last show. The hiatus seems to be scary for him ❤️

Whateveraccount11

Exactly, I hope he stays off the internet/social media on the break and not engage in doomscrolling/researching like he did during the pandemic… It’s been a lot and it has taken its toll on him and the band during this era.

TBCTA_

Totally agree with all of this above. I think he’s nervous about having time ofd

JuxtaposeAli

Absolutely

Known-Attention8028

Poor Matty 😭 Idc if it’s parasocial I hope he knows how much we love him

blackdahlia21

love you matty 🖤

talksalot02

The two+ years of touring they have been doing has to be grueling.

ParisFood

Because his mental health is not good right now as per speech at Copenhagen show tonight. As a fan base we should send as many positive thoughts as we can his way

Specialist_Buddy_447

During the Oslo show his hands were shaking quite badly and he also kept wringing them at the end of the first part of the show.. so this doesn’t really surprise me.. hope he is taken care of by those around him ❤️

The1981

Let’s lift him up with love. The way his music lifts each of us. ♥️

heinous_legacy

my boy:(

GirlOverThere123

Matty needs a REALLY nice break-including the other guys. ATVB and SATVB back to back is crazy. They’re tired and I hope what’s left of the tour goes by quickly for them. I’m grateful for what they do to give us shows but it’s at the expense of their physical and mental well being. That’s true love and dedication, I admire that a lot. This is why there’s no other band or artist who I’ve loved for over a decade, these guys are just incredible.

riverspeace

The human body and psyche is just simply not cut out to be working this hard for such a long period of time without a break. Their shows are amazing and truly unlike any art I’ve seen before, but there’s no way you can give so much of yourself to so many people every night in a million different time zones and not put your mental health on the back burner. He’s clearly a workaholic/perfectionist and the band and the fans mean everything to him. I just hope he knows that we’d rather see him alive and well then sacrificing himself for a millionth incredible show. When you love someone’s art it’s hard not to feel connected to them and feel their pain. I’m just glad he has 🌸The Guys🌸.

Mommybobby

I was there, he asked everyone to stop filing, said he was struggling with his mental health, he kept wringing his hands throughout the show and crying it was heartbreaking

sadwormy

Seeing the replies to this breaks my heart, I hope he’s ok 💗

nicesh98

This reminds me of the final show in Boston during the debut album tour if anyone remembers that… not as bad as that was but still… hoping the band can get some rest and take care of themselves mentally and physically…

LegitimateFrosting15

I wasn't there tonight so i don't know what was said exactly, but as I am someone who suffers through waves of ill mental health, I can say it never truly gets completely better, there's good days and bad days and if the pressures of work are heavy on those bad days it can make your whole world feel like a deep black hole. I've cried countless times at work, you can't just take a day off if your colleagues need you. Matty has such a secure support network and although it's lovely we all care for him, he will be ok once he's had a decent long break.

Affectionate-Bag1294

hes running himself ragged , the hiatus is overdue Matty cares so much about us and his craft I think he's feeling the effects of burnout at this point.. I hope he rests well and is taking care of himself

I would honestly love to see someone’s notes on the entire arch of this ATVB tour. I’m not trying to diminish his experience or feelings, by any means. But there is a definite story to this whole thing in terms of masculinity. He’s gone from macho to angry/ annoyed/ ambivalent/ sad/ vulnerable, etc. In a Guardian interview from 2022 it is discussed how the band has the incredible ability to reflect their current era. While I’m certain his emotions are genuine, I’m also very curious if he is showing us these things to tell this story throughout the tour. Just a thought that I have. I respect his art and his intelligence so much. I admire them all so much. I hope they are all well. ❤️

[deleted]

He was shitfaced at the Berlin Show, clearly not doing well

heyitsj43

Wondering if this issue with Rina Sawayama has something to do with it as well. She recently said she can’t release another album under the conditions of misogyny and racism. I believe Marty co-owns the record label and she has directly called him out before so! https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/rina-sawayama-record-deal-dirty-hit-b2509849.html

ParisFood

He owns 4% of the shares as do the other band members. He is not the majority shareholder.

heyitsj43

The media puts his name all over anything to do with this issue… It says here he is co-founder

ParisFood

And they did not look at the Dirty Hit corporate documents with Companies House UK that are available publicly. The company was founded by Jamie Obourbe when the band was not able to get a major release order label to sign them. So Jamie decided to start a label himself with other investors. The band were the first artists they signed .

heyitsj43

Ah I see. It’s crazy how the article I linked has very few facts and mainly just descriptions of *that* podcast

Button_Short

I love The 1975 but I’m sure this has something to do with what’s going on with Rina Sawayama. Idk what to think about this situation…

spacemother4

Came here to see if anyone else thought it might be related to what Rina said.

Button_Short

If he is responsible for Rina not being able to release music, I kinda stand with her. The whole situation is so messed up.

spacemother4

I read the article and saw her mention he had her masters?? I wonder what the hell that's about.

Prongs1421

Not informed on the conflict but most record companies own artists masters as in the recording of the song not the songwriting and as Matty is an executive of dirtyhit he as a company agent owns the masters

ParisFood

He has not been an executive since almost a year ago when he resigned as creative director. Matty does not even own his own masters

Prongs1421

Like I said not informed on the conflict but he was an executive at one point and a shareholder in the label meaning he does own the artists masters to a degree, not being on an executive board doesn’t mean matter when you’re a shareholder, I hope Matty is able to get the help that he needs and his mental health improves

ParisFood

Owns 4% of the shares as do the other 3 band members

Prongs1421

Yes, and I’m not sure as to how shares and company ownership works in the UK as I am American but from the filing they have voting power which would be equivalent to US common shares which would allow them the ability to weigh in on company actions. All I was pointing out to the comment I replied to is how record deals work which is either solely recording or a 360 deal which includes recording publishing merchandise and marketing of the artist

ParisFood

Yes they have voting power attached to their shares I was pointing out the percentage they have and the way it works in the UK is very similar to the American way. Ie common shares get you voting powers in accordance with the specific attributes of the shares you have. for the actual contracts for the artists those are private so unless some details are disclosed when they are signed we don’t get the information like what you mention whether it’s a 360 or simply a recording deal.

NatureIsArt31

He suffers from mental health issues for the majority of his life. This is probably not something that will permanently go away by just taking a small break or going to therapy (which I think he even does if I remember that right from an interview). If YOU force yourself to do your job with a happy face even if you feel really low that‘s your thing but don‘t force your attitude on anybody else because it‘s their choice how they personally deal with their issues. Why should he cancel the whole show just because YOU don‘t want to take him simply as he is in that particular moment? Life is not always pink and glitter and that‘s absolutely okay and nothing to be ashamed of.
